Overnight Open Thread: Tuesday -- 8/6/2013
— Pixy Misa

Hello, 'Rons & 'Ettes. It's me again -- the Damn Dirty RINO you've all come to know and dread. I'm filling in for Maet tonight as he attends to important matters, but try not to despair. I'll make my best effort to suppress my long-winded tendencies and just get on with the links you've grown accustomed to here on the ONT over the years.

Having notched another calendar year on the planet this week, I've been doing a bit of introspection. And, frankly, I don't usually enjoy doing that. For some reason, every time I allow myself to start re-examining some of my life choices hitherto, it culminates in me sitting alone in a drunken stupor at the local Waffle Hut with the inner workings of a western omelet running down the front of my Yngwie Malmsteen t-shirt.

But, this year is different. This year, I've decided seize the initiative.

Like a lot of people, I've got a whole passel of unreached aspirations that plague me in my darker moments. For example, I spent my teens dreaming of someday being a rock star. Unfortunately, I lacked the requisite talent -- and, absent that, the good fortune of living in southern California during the 80's-metal hair-band boom. I did have the mullet, though -- which is more than I can say for this girl.

So, rather than spend precious hours that I can never regain wallowing in the mire of self-recrimination and regret, I've concluded that this is the year to take action. I can choose to continue wasting my time focusing on the things I haven't yet achieved, or I can devote that energy to actually achieving them. And, as the eminent cob-logger tmi3rd recently informed me, in order to achieve those things, I'm just going to have to get over my fear of failure. After all, it's not like I'd be the first guy to fail spectacularly.

After all, when you get right down to it, failure is nothing but an opportunity to devise another path to success. When countless hours at the gym aren't enough to enable you to open a simple bottle, then perhaps it's time to take a different approach and come up with a more effective means.

Now, don't get me wrong; nobody likes to fail. I hate it as much as anyone else does. In fact, it's that crippling hatred of failure that has kept me from taking a lot of chances that could have paid off had I simply gotten over myself. It's entirely based on the notion that people will see me as a hapless, pathetic figure who made a fool of himself. But, the truth of the matter is, if you knew of often people really think about you, you'd care a whole lot less about what they think about you.

And, in the end, there are very few people in anyone's life whose opinions should carry any weight in their day-to-day decisions. And it's those people who stand to benefit the most when you give yourself a chance to succeed. After all, those people will continue to love you and believe in you, no matter how many times you fail. And when you finally allow yourself to repay them for that love and support by persevering through the tough times, you'll experience a level of joy you never thought possible.

And, having finally come around to this obvious bit of wisdom, I've decided to do what any self respecting RINO does: keep charging ahead. Also, impale anyone who gets too close.

First order of business: Learn to bake.

3 It Was NEVER About Tolerance… The Progressive left have often screeched “tolerance” and condemned all those who do not “tolerate” their way of life and beliefs. Of course, what they call “tolerance” has mutated over time to mean “enthusiastic affirmation.” More: http://politicalhat.com/?p=2898

164 who even thinks about that shit? fuckin' canadians . . .
We didn't have beer twist-offs until the 1980s when Miller piss began being brewed here under license because real men keep flat bottle-openers in their wallets here to open real bottles that can be reused dozens of times unlike the twist-offs.

It also killed the stubby bottle that was literally scientifically engineered to hold the 12oz of a beer in the most compact form and with the strongest, most long-lasting bottle. And all in brown glass that is best for protecting the beer's quality from sunlight.

But the stupid breweries thought the huge numbers of sales of Miller in clear-glass, longneck bottles was because of its appearance when it was just alot of people trying out the product for the first time.

I worked at the U of Toronto's liquor licensee in the 1980s and for the first school year when Miller made its appearance, we went through 2 skids/palettes a week of it just as we did for the two big sellers--Labatt's Blue and Molson Canadian. The following school year we only went through half a skid a week of Miller. People were just trying out the new beer on the block.

But by then all the major breweries had taken alot (or all?) of their products and changed them to longnecks thinking innovative packing had been responsible for Millers' initial large sales thus screwing all the bars that had had their refrigerator shelves custom-built to take X number of rows of stubbies since the early 1970s.
http://tinyurl.com/mkob8lu

The stubbies are so durable that former Canadian bottles were used in Jamaica for a long time. (Maybe even to this day?)
http://tinyurl.com/lfoy9hh

Now you know the rest of the story, Peaches.

Yes.  Drone strikes on HVT's were happening in Yemen during Bush's term and started when AQ types started fleeing Iraq due to surge and the Awakening and setting up shop there.

Since it not an active insurgency like A-stan, it was based on specific intel, not suspicious behavior of unknown individuals as has happened in A-stan.

285 5/12/2009 5:37:00 PM A A A From Kitty Hawk Public Affairs BREMERTON, Wash. (NNS) -- The aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) was decommissioned May 12 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Wash., after more than 48 years of service. Members of the final crew lowered the ship's commissioning pennant from the main mast and the U.S. Flag and First Navy Jack from their staffs after Kitty Hawk Commanding Officer Capt. Todd Zecchin closed out the ship's deck log. "It's hard to capture the feeling in words," said Zecchin. "This is the second aircraft carrier that I've decommissioned, and it doesn't hit you immediately until you've lowered the commissioning pennant for the last time." Kitty Hawk's officers of the deck have used the log to track shipboard activities, both in port and at sea, since commissioning April 29, 1961. Zecchin then transferred the ship to the control of shipyard commander Capt. Mark Whitney during a small ceremony aboard the ship. "She has served her country for almost 50 years - 48 years and 13 days, across the globe," said Zecchin. "There have been a lot of Sailors that have crossed her decks, a lot of airmen that have flown off and on her decks." Kitty Hawk arrived in Bremerton Sept. 2, 2008 to prepare for its eventual decommissioning. The ship spent the previous 10 years operating from Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan. While operating from Japan as the Navy's only forward deployed aircraft carrier, Kitty Hawk took part in dozens of exercises and operations, including being the first aircraft carrier to take part in Operation Enduring Freedom in the Arabian Sea, and her aircraft took part in the opening strikes of Operation Iraqi Freedom. She was replaced by USS George Washington (CVN 73), which is only the fourth U.S. aircraft carrier to be forward deployed from Yokosuka.

It was OK on the dry.  We had a couple dozen plus  to the boat and  they  dumped and missed  as many more.  But a 50% rate isn't bad for clients.

We have had a pretty rough season as far as riverflow is concerned.  Most of the rivers are under restricted fishing hours to keep anglers off the warm water...so, lines up at 2.  Makes for early mornings.

Head to the southern end of the island for dinner plate sized sea shells and sand dollars. Just remember to bring LOTS of sunscreen and water. There is no shade there. I took my wife there for our honeymoon and we had the whole island to ourselves. I wish I could own my own island like that!

Eruption?  Fffft.  One of my best friends played it at assembly in 10th grade.  From al.com:

I know as a guitarist, Eddie Van Halen means a lot to you – like he does to a lot of people – especially as you were growing up. Got any cool stories from when Brother Cane toured with Van Halen in the mid-90s as their opening act?

The coolest one was the last show we did, Irvine Meadows (Amphitheatre in California), he came into the dressing room, and I kept wanting to tell him ... You know, I played "Eruption" when I was in 10th grade at a pep rally. I had glasses and pencil-thin neck and braces, and I stepped to the middle of the gym and played the finger-tapping part and the crowd went nuts and that sealed the deal: I was going to do this for a living.

And I kept wanting to tell him the story. But I thought, "How many times has he heard this kind of thing?" So he came into the dressing room and the band kept saying, "Tell him, Dave. Tell him." And he said, "Tell me what?" and I told him the story and again he threw his arms around me and said, "Man, that's the greatest story ever." To be able to tell him that story was just very surreal.

On the other hand, I used to date a buxom (38FF) redhead that was lost at cooking beyond putting it in the microwave.  I was making spaghetti one night, and she "wanted to help."  I had the sauce almost done, so I told her she could do the pasta.  I got a blank stare.  So I explained that first, she needed to fill this pot with some water and then bring the water to a boil.

Hardhitting.

No, not really. If you've been following the story there was not much new at it.

I'll file it as "may grab the attention of some LIVs" but past that not much.

CNN decided (from my perspective) to place much of the emphasis on the security failure, with some on the cover-up.  Very little on the military response.

While they did note that Carney lied about State's involvement in the talking points, they didn't follow through on it much.

A LIV watching might be stunned about the total lack of an investigation.

Having said all of that, it tilted negative towards the administration, less so towards HRC, but only because they let Paul "The Forehead" Begala speak for some really odd reason, and he called the R's "bullies."

I didn't finish it, because the wife wanted to go to bed.  I laid down, but couldn't sleep....

You asked a question last night about the 410 gallon tank, but I had already signed off and didn't see it until this morning.

The tank was on the ground floor of a two-story house set into the hillside, resting on the slab.  It moved to a one-story building, where it still rests on the slab.  Moving it upstairs just referred to getting it back to driveway level to get it out of the first house.

Having done a fair amount of stress analysis a few years ago, I can say that under no circumstances should an aquarium that size be put on the second floor of anything other than a custom-built house.  Even against a support wall the tank would simply warp and eventually destroy the floor joists or the brackets holding them...again, in a normal house.

454 I've got a whole passel of unreached aspirations that plague me in my darker moments

I wanted to be a famous painter, someone whose canvases would fetch fine prices and be the subject of a review or two here or there.

I still paint, but I paint against the tide.

I'll be one of the homeless, only my shopping cart will be full of admired but unsold canvases, each being a tag saying "Wow that's pretty cool" or some other variant of what I have achieved.

Sorry for the darkening skies and the furrowed brow.  We now return you to your regularly scheduled ONT.

It really depends on how you build the tank. Long and low along a wall. 410 gallons could be no problem. Remember waterbeds? then there is what's underneath,Jack posts in a unfinished basement would hold that load easy. The Engineering is easy if you want it bad enough. Even building a base that spreads the load out over the length of a wall might work.

Mike Judge's follow-up flick to Idiocracy, Extract, opens with a great scene inside of a Guitar Center. It features two young males who work there completely ignoring the pleas for help from an older guy in the store... because oh-so-attractive Cindy (played by Mila Kunis) is asking them a bunch of bullshit questions about an expensive guitar, in the hope she can get them to "loan" it to her so that she can steal it.

I have a niece who, at eight years old, is already, er, getting positive attention from boys. Like I say to her dad, the next several years are going to be downright spooky.

However, and thankfully, despite their differences, her parents are working hard to stay together and raise the kids together. From what I've read, young teenage girls who have a father in the home (instead of a "weekend dad" or "Disneyland dad") are far less likely to be, shall we say, irresponsible with themselves as young'uns.

Let's hope the research is correct.

Agree with your points.  However, some of the context comes from last night's discussion.  The tank in question is 32 x 36 x 96 (actually now that I do the math it comes out to slightly more than 410 gallons), and the question was about how I supported it upstairs in a two-story house (a misunderstanding based on my reference to stairs in the original comment).

Before that, however, I and my aquariums were located in LA, and rode out both the Landers and Northridge quakes.  Except for the extremely tall display tanks there was no problem in those two events, and even those tanks survived successfully, although they rocked alarmingly.

Trip down memory lane: I had a 13 x 36 x 48 display tank (110 gallons, basically two 55's made out of really thick glass and stacked) that, to this day, I wish I had moved to Seattle with the rest of the collection.  You just can't find that kind of tank anymore without buying custom-built.

--LMAO Lazer.  I remember when my friends in college bought that.  The label read: "Lazer: A Specialty Malt Liquor."

They also heard about a convenience store in the ghetto that sold a legendary 64 oz. bottle of Olde English and got one.  It took the three of them a good chunk of the night to polish it off.  For the rest of the school year, it was a "trophy" place atop the cabinets.  When it came time to move out, instead of just throwing it out, they put a Post-It note on it that read, "Damn, that's a big beer!" and left it on top of the dumpster.

I belong to a tropical fish club in Silicon Valley....and there are truly wild earthquake stories -- like one guy who had a 20-gallon plexi tank on a stand in a 2nd floor room before the quake -- which ended up on the floor afterward.....with 19 gallons (and fish!) still in it.

And, btw, plexi tanks aren't that difficult to build -- or have built.....and you should, 'cause extra thickness (especially in tops) really helps with warping.

As I may have let slip previously, I attended the University of Casual Sun-Bathing back in the early '80s. This was a very interesting time, because the administration was trying to put a lid on the hedonism that the campus had grown infamous for pursuing, but things kept busting through. As an example, I believe that my dorm -- in fact, my hall (Tesoro) -- had the last "blowout dorm party" before new rules came down against certain forms of advertising, bouncers, and charging admission (Fall, '79).

One of the many fond memories I have of this occasion involved making up "punch" for the ladies. Evidently, there was some sort of time-honored recipe for this stuff. The guys had borrowed a beverage service unit from the dining commons -- you know, the stainless-steel tower with a spigot that normally dispenses OJ? -- and began this weird scavenger hunt.

One box brown sugar, check. One container of frozen lemonade concentrate, check (no mixing, just open it and throw the contents in). One container "fruit punch" concentrate, check. Two bottles rum, two bottles vodka, two bottles everclear -- check, check, check....and while the more experienced guys are mixing up this stuff, I'm watching in amazement that they think that anyone would willingly drink it. After all the ingredients were in, they closed the top and a couple of beefier guys picked up the entire metal widget and shook it vigorously for a bit.

They put it back down and popped the top to see if everything had mixed thoroughly, and -- honest to god -- fumes slowly wafted over the edge of the thing and blopped towards the floor. My eyes bugged out. The "mixmaster" who had this recipe handed down to him nodded sagely and declared it ready.

I actually tried a sip -- it was cloyingly sweet and didn't seem all that alcoholic, at first.....

Agreed, although the cost of plexiglass tanks has skyrocketed over the last 15 years or so.  I switched over to plexiglass in 1994 and never looked back.  Well, except for a couple of custom-built 93 gallon glass tanks that I picked up in 2004.  The 410 is definitely plexiglass...if it had been glass, I never would have gotten it out of the first house, let alone into the new building.

I have a couple of off-the-rack thin 100 gallon plexi tanks and you can see the bulge in the front in the middle, but it doesn't affect their structural integrity.  The rest of the plexi tanks were custom built and much sturdier and have held up beautifully over the years.

I used to have a client who lived (and worked) in Scotts Valley.  Her stories about the Loma Prieta quake were quite hair-raising.

Would hit the same little neighborhood grocery every other day trying to but, always to be rejected. I kept at it though. After about 3 months and 50 attempts, they finally just sold me that first 6 pack. Best damned beer I ever tasted. I was the hero of our little group for years after that. Even the 20 yr olds would come to me to but it for them. And at 17, I looked 15. Maybe.

I had a roomie from my college days -- guy was, IIRC, 6'11". Found out from him about how even large-size shoes pretty much top-out at size 17....when you found a tossed shoe in the living room, it was like a D&D prop. He drove a pickup because he didn't fit in cars.

Anyway, he finds this deal on a 200 gallon glass tank and stand, and he and I go off to get it. Deal gets done, cash is exchanged, stuff is loaded into his pickup, we drive back to the apartment, we move the stand in....and he's like "ok, let's carry this in."

I heft the end sticking off the tailgate -- I can move it enough to bounce the shocks, but can't lift the end off the truck. "Nuh-uh," saith I....

So we go fetch this dolly he had around for some reason, and the plan is that I'll push it from the truck and he'll lift the free end down to the dolly, then we'll swap and I'll man the dolly while he lifts the other end and totes it to the apartment. Great idea, and executed flawlessly.....except that beads of sweat literally start popping from his forehead as soon as he takes the full weight of the beast.

And so it goes, and we're racing in from the parking lot and I'm steadying it on this poor dolly while noting the alarming fact that the dolly's axles are eroding the inside of the wheel assemblies as we're going. And his forehead is going "drip, drip, drip...." And we get to the doorway, and the dolly is NOT getting pushed over that threshold.....so we do a quick change of plans and reverse the tank so that he backs in and the dolly will pull over.....and we get the tank in the place right up to where the dolly's wheels are at the doorstep -- and the metal, wheeled dolly completely fails. It totally flattens out. The wheels go splay, the bent metal unbends, the tubes crumple -- it's not just pinin' for the fjords, it's singin' with the choir eternal. And the roomie puts his end on the floor and lets his body sag against the wall.

And I'm looking at that collapsed bit of scrap and thinkin' -- "that could've been me! Fook!"

Put me off of glass tanks forever larger than 55s.

The final piece of the story occurred in October 2004 when 200 cans of the stolen beer were found at a marijuana growing operation in the forest near Doaktown, New Brunswick about 100 kilometres northeast of Fredericton.[4] "Six of the cans were discovered with bite marks in them indicating a bear had, at one point, been into the beer," the RCMP said in a news release. Completely agree, exxcept that my two oldest tanks (and the largest glass ones) are two 125's and I've hauled those through three moves.  It was a challenge the first two times, and the last time  (in 2009) I discovered that it was much harder than I remembered from 1992 and 1996.   I have a lot of glass 75's that are pretty manageable, too (they were just so cheap compared to plexiglass that I couldn't resist).

I cannot even begin to imagine how much heavier a 200 gallon would be.  The size would be  one factor (about 1.6), but then also the thickness of the glass would probably add another 33-50%.  Eeek.  No wonder the dolly collapsed.

I have a plexiglass 240 (good, sturdy tank) however, that I actually moved by myself once.  It was only from room to room, but getting it off the stand, into the next room and then back onto the stand was surprisingly easy.

640 Oh it was nothing useful to anyone else (especially since I didn't find an answer). It was trying to find *actual* research and tests on formulations of automatic transmission fluid. It's one of the many categories of consumer products where no one with the resources to do it have an interest in actual valid testing, *or* they're simply willing to accept invalid testing that favors them, *or* they depend on an ignorant clientele anyway so it doesn't matter. So no one actually tests it in a meaningful way, *and* on top of that everyone's a Brand Religionist so the discussion is always a Holy War with no actual information of any use. Starting to see that almost everything is a Holy War. What was the last one I stumbled across that was nonsensical? Oh, yeah, the other night I saw a discussion re: an online game where people were actually arguing *against* the company involved fixing a lot of old bugs. Because there is always someone who will argue anything. Don't get me started on the voodoo witch-doctors we in the so-called Modern World depend upon to wave their witch-rattles and hurl potions and leeches at us. No, I'm not grumpy, why do you ask?

If I didn't know better I'd have thought Leno set him up.  I almost stayed to listen to the next question.  Almost.

Posted by: rich@gmu at August 07, 2013 04:32 AM (ga+7c) Again I appreciate it, but not focused on the particular question of quality of relative formulations (brands) in a specific application. There are an awful lot of opinions out there, haven't seen anything relevant actually tested and released (researchers care about stuff like what a specific chemical does or how fluid dynamics work in a machine, not brand tests). I assume manufacturers of the devices do actual tests, just don't publish them. They give recommendations that may or may not be relevant and in this case are vague. It's a thing, thanks for looking though.

In general, air solubility, volumetric thermal expansion, and specific heat increase with increasing temperature; whereas, surface tension, specific gravity, viscosity, bulk modulus, density, thermal conductivity, and electrical resistivity decrease with increasing temperature.

Posted by: Conservative Crank at August 07, 2013 04:41 AM (sQ0LB) Ongoing, 3 and a half years ago, and new complications they can't explain and really don't seem very interested in dealing with. I think my PCP is scared of being sued and doesn't want to talk about it. Looking for more new doctors.

Useful if you want to design a new fluid, I guess. Try a little physical exercise, even at your desk, to stay awake. Being tired sucks.

Posted by: Conservative Crank at August 07, 2013 04:47 AM (sQ0LB) I will try if I find them sometime, online less than I used to be. I have been trying to hook up with ped specialists as they seem to have a better idea of rehabilitation rather than *warehousing*, which seems to be the standard model for adults. Almost everyone else who sees my doctors are retirees who just don't want to die. Stanford is next on the list, should have gone there first but they wanted referrals and the doctors here were all dicks about it, they sent me to UCSF which kind of turned into a waste of time. I don't know what happened to stem cell research but it seems to have taken a shit in general for some reason. Every trial I have tried to get into has either been closed or not yet open (indefinitely). They keep saying there's no visible damage to the organ, arteries are clear and healthy, yadda yadda, here, take a pill and don't do anything useful. Well, eight pills. No one has anything to say about healing or improving the organ. I know the field is kind of the bastard child of cardiac care (infarctions get all the sex), but still. I did a ton of research at first but I've been sick a lot lately and aggro, should do more but it feels like ten years.

679 Mero, I don't know what his schedule is like, it seems like when I do see him it's usually early in the ONT.  I think I talked with you about it briefly before, and you've quizzed me a couple times on your symptoms for pickup of initial diagnosis at least.  I seem to remember talking the pros and cons of digoxin once as well.  Remind me, have they tested for Lyme?  That can do some weird cardiac sh*t in later stages.

683 Remind me, have they tested for Lyme? That can do some weird cardiac sh*t in later stages. Posted by: Conservative Crank at August 07, 2013 05:00 AM (sQ0LB) You know, I would have to check. If they didn't, I think I may have to (redacted) a (redacted), as I just looked it up and, well don't you effing know it, apart from the rash (depending on how varied the expression is), I have all the long-term symptoms (and have complained repeatedly about them to the useless MDs, who treat them all separately, and by treat I mean ignore). Fortunately, and by fortunately I mean fucking hell you stupid universe, there appears to be no way to test for it after the fact and no away to treat the degredation after the fact. It probably affects gene expression like adenoviruses. I don't think there was any question of ticks any time in my adult life but I don't think that's an absolute requirement. It could alse be a virus, bacteria or fungus with a similar effect for the same reason, which is, of course, unknown. Well, thanks for mentioning it. I will dig out all my initial tests from the first few days in the hospital.

684 The only one I've come up with is for girls who come in and want something girly, which they've dubbed the "Waltini":

1 oz. white tequila
1 oz. vodka
twist of lime
equal parts pineapple and orange juice
shake
splash of Hershey's strawberry syrup
top with Sprite or 7-Up.

They seem to like it. I'm more of a Scotch and gin drinker, so I haven't even tried it.

Posted by: DamnDirtyRINO at August 07, 2013 01:10 AM (m0h0I)

685 This was how I diagnosed my own sleep apnea and my Mom diagnosed my gluten intolerance. Add your symptoms together and start looking for a match, after you spend years going to doctors who want to treat every symptom individually with twenty pills. I had exactly that with apnea, I had a doctor (long fired) who wanted to treat me for like five things, so I went and looked for anything that matched all of the symptoms, went back with a paper on sleep deprivation and said "order a sleep test." At least they said "okay," they didn't argue everything like my newer doctor. This will probably go on for ten years and then we'll find out I'm dextro-amino or a genetic chimera or some other one-in-a-billion freak thing that caused all the rest. I was basically born sick, kind of a wonder I lived. And my parents took good care of me and put up with all the bizarre crap.

There are some highly controversial treatment regimens for chronic Lyme.  As in, I wish I could do double italics to express just how sketchy they are considered by the overwhelming majority of physicians.  Of course, most cardiomyopathies are not reversible, so it might be moot to your case even if the (alleged) chronic infection could otherwise be treated.  There was a guy where I did my training just outside Detroit who was infamous for treating chronic Lyme with something like year-long courses of antibiotics.  Totally random fact I feel like throwing in--the hospital where I did my ER residency is where Kervorkian brought his patients, and where he ultimately died as well.

The rash is not an absolute requirement for Lyme, though it is present in the vast majority of cases.  And your hypothesis about gene expression might be on the mark, as I think Borella species are intracellular infections--too lazy and tired to look up or care that much about microbiology at this moment.  And while Lyme is mostly an East Coast/New England thing, there are scattered cases throughout the country.

I like the occasional whiskey sour, myself. Unfortunately, my stomach isn't crazy about the extra acid. I had to give up salty dogs because of that, which was a bummer.

But, I can still handle a good gin n' tonic. (Screw you, ampersand!)

Posted by: DamnDirtyRINO at August 07, 2013 01:19 AM (m0h0I)

691 Of course, most cardiomyopathies are not reversible, so it might be moot to your case even if the (alleged) chronic infection could otherwise be treated. Well, getting rid of the rest of the issues would be nice, especially joint issues, pain and memory issues. We're kind of assuming the aggro is being caused by carvedilol, which is almost never listed *except* when it's being used as an anti-anxiety agent, which none of my doctors even *knew*. And your hypothesis about gene expression might be on the mark, as I think Borella species are intracellular infections Posted by: Conservative Crank at August 07, 2013 05:17 AM (sQ0LB) I think it happens a lot more often than people think. Our genetic code is not set at birth and unchanging, there's a lot of "switchable" material there. Also the "syndrome" related to post-Lyme is apparently a consequence of other infections as well, so it's probably a variable gene expression issue that results from multiple bacteria, viruses, and even fungi. I think adenoviruses were just the first identified with/associated with the phenomenon, I don't think they're unique. Borella is both extracellular and intracellular, depending on other factors, I think most people think of it as extracellular but I see a lot of references contrarywise. Strep can also cause the "syndrome," and I imagine a lot of other things can as well.

Ok, internet died for a moment there, I'll try posting this story for a third time:

Several years ago, my brother and I bought a bottle of Tanqueray Ten for our buddy's college graduation.  Except for perhaps 2 shots' worth, he killed the whole bottle in a few hours.  Mind you, he was drunk before he started, and I think he was having other drinks as well.  That night he just dropped head-first into a hot tub, and might have drowned if his g/f (now wife) hadn't pulled his head back out of it.  The next day he was confused where all the expensive gin went and was mad that we hadn't stopped him from drinking all of it.
