David Frum Takes a Dump on Andrew Breitbart's Grave
Frum couldn't contain himself and published a screed against Breitbart on the day he died. Now on the one year anniversary of Andrew's death he republished it - along with some extra smugness and snark.
This indifference to detail suffused all of Breitbart's work, and may indeed be his most important and lasting legacy. Breitbart sometimes got stories right (Anthony Weiner). More often he got them wrong (Sherrod). He did not much care either way. Just as all is fair in a shooting war, so manipulation and deception are legitimate tools in a culture war. Breitbart used those tools without qualm or regret, and he inspired a cohort of young conservative journalists to do likewise.
Why would Frum do such a thing? Because he's more thoughtful, reasonable, civil, empathetic and caring than the likes of all you and he knows it. Why can't you extremist losers see that he's the one that needs to be in charge of conservatism?
What America needs now, and what the Republican party most especially needs, are moderate-minded people who are also tough-minded - who won't be shrieked down and who won't be intimidated. "Civility" cannot mean: you yell, I yield. Conservatives deplore those old-line 1960s liberals who shriveled up when challenged by student radicals and Black Power militants. Well, now it's happening in our house, and it is we who are being tested: Do we dare confront our own radicals? It's not enough to have greater wisdom, greater tolerance, and greater patriotism if you don't also muster courage, endurance, and will to win.
Andrew inspired people. Frum mostly inspires people to actively dislike him.
Global Warming/Changening Concern Slowly Fades Away
Public concern about environmental issues including climate change has slumped to a 20-year low since the financial crisis, a global study reveals.
Fewer people now consider issues such as CO2 emissions, air and water pollution, animal species loss, and water shortages to be "very serious" than at any time in the last two decades, according to the poll of 22,812 people in 22 countries including Britain and the US.
People talk a good game about environmentalism but when it comes down to actual dollars and cents it turns out it's really a luxury item. And one of the first things to be cut when times get tight.

You just don't see this degree of patriotism among drug dealers any more.
Brave Atheist Suddenly Turns Pussy When Islam Comes Up
Richard Dawkins really, really hates religion and isn't afraid to say so...right up until the topic turns to Islam.
In a recent Al-Jazeerah interview, Richard Dawkins was asked his views on God. He argued that the god of "the Old Testament" is "hideous" and "a monster", and reiterated his claim from The God Delusion that the God of the Torah is the most unpleasant character "in fiction".As you can see, Dawkins has no trouble attacking the Hebrew God in a most direct and uncompromising manner. No atheist wallflower he.
Asked if he thought the same of the God of the Koran, Dawkins ducked the question, saying: "Well, um, the God of the Koran I don't know so much about."

Because the Census Bureau has officially declared them Hispanic which means they can hop on the Affirmative Action train.
By the way the list of Portuguese descended Americans who are obviously hugely disadvantaged in life because of their heretofore unacknowledged Hispanic status include the actors Tom Hanks and Keanu Reeves and singers Katy Perry and Steve Perry. Affirmative action to the rescue!
Texas Trying to Ban Aerial Photography?
And satellite imagery too I think.
Representative Lance Gooden has introduced HB912 which proposes: 'A person commits an offense if the person uses or authorizes the use of an unmanned vehicle or aircraft to capture an image without the express consent of the person who owns or lawfully occupies the real property captured in the image. ('Image' is defined as including any type of recorded telemetry from sensors that measure sound waves, thermal, infrared, ultraviolet, visible light, or other electromagnetic waves, odor, or other conditions.)'
..."A person is guilty of a class A misdemeanor if such person knowingly creates or assists in creating an image of the exterior of any residential dwelling in this state where such image is created by or with the assistance of a satellite, drone, or any device that is not supported by the ground."

5 Classic Best-Sellers That Were Rejectected by Publishers
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was rejected by multiple publishers for being too long for children and it was only by chance that it ever made it into print.Anyway, deciding that she needed an agent, Rowling thumbed through a directory and chose Christopher Little because the name sounded like a character in a children's book. She shipped her manuscript off to Little's office, where it met a familiar fate: An assistant tossed it straight into the rejection pile because Little thought that children's books didn't make any money.
...Eventually fate (or possibly a curse on Rowling's part, we're not sure) intervened when Rowling's illustrations caught the eye of Little's assistant while she was sending out the rejections. She convinced Little, who signed Rowling on ... at which point publishers continued to reject Harry Potter. Finally, Little shipped it off to Bloomsbury Publishing, where chairman Nigel Newton agreed to look at it as a personal favor.
Newton then did something that apparently never occurred to other children's book publishers, which was to show it to an actual child. He offhandedly tossed the manuscript to his 8-year-old daughter, who devoured it in hours and came back to him demanding more. Only at that point did someone finally decide, "Eh, let's put some copies out there. Who knows, maybe this will make us all enough money that we can each live on an island made of gold."

In the dark hours of Thursday morning, Feb. 28, I awoke to find CNN featuring a continuous shot of a helicopter. The network cut between a close-up and a distant dot. It was Benedict, flying from the Vatican City. This was extraordinary attention for an ordinary cardinal, because as Benedict told the throng awaiting him, “I am no longer pope.” I am not a scholar of Catholic history, but I believe we were witnessing the first time the papal throne was vacant. It may have been occupied by rogues, scoundrels, impostors or even a woman, but always there was someone sitting there.
It gets better.
"I consider myself Catholic, lock, stock and barrel, with this technical loophole: I cannot believe in God."
Not believing in God, not knowing how popes are picked, thinking a woman might have been a pope, and considering yourself a Catholic only means you're stupid. And your movie reviews still suck.

'Hispanic' didn't exist until 1960; in that year, 1970, and 1980, 'Hispanic' was a race. In 2000 and 2010, the next-to last question on the 'short form' ( which most people get ) asks you if you are Hispanic. The last question asks you to pick a race from their list, which does not include Hispanic.
2000 and 2010 have been the only ones to have 'multi-racial' as an option for the 'race question'

Most of us have said, let's just make up names of weapons and these fucking idiots wouldn't know the difference.
Finally, just ordered Joseph Frank's work on Dostoevsky and I couldn't be more excited to read it. Also ordered Hillsdale College's complete Winston Churchill biography and documents (holy fuck is that expensive) and can't wait to read that. GM making money?
Well, the credit card analogy is good.
The Government crammed down the Senior Bond holders in the "bankruptcy" in 2009, forcing them to take a haircut, which accordingly was thought to be an illegal taking. So there's point one.
They handed over a good part of the value of the corporation to the UAW for no apparent compensation, which is sometimes called "goodwill" in company buy-outs. Ha=ha.
Then, the New GM got a lot of unsecured government loan money, to get their operations liquid again (with cash to pay creditors). So if you look at the 25-30 billion the government "gave" GM beyond the purview of the "stock" the government bought at a falsely inflated price to pump more cash into the beast, then yes, GM is "making money". On a smaller scale, the government gave Chrysler to FIAT to make it sort of "whole" again, because it would have been really brazen to do that twice.

True. I assumed the battle they opened up with was supposed to be the last campaign that resulted in Vercingetorix' capture. That would have been in the same year that Milo stood trial. They way they did it in the series they skipped a bit and went straight to the crisis with Pompey two years later. Clodius was killed in January of 52bc so the street fighting between him and Milo would have been 54-53bc.

I think these starlets need to get tattoos of all the guys that have nutted in them over their scampers, that way you can see who went their before you did. And in the case of Madonna, they could just finish the list on her back, where I'm sure a lot of people finished.

I'm told that Catalan isn't much like Spanish; it's more like Provencal (or some Italian dialects). I've been to Portugal; that language struck me as archaic Spanish in some places, misspelled Spanish in others.
Portugal was on the far side of Gibraltar, so they had ways to survive off the peninsula. Catalonia was stuck there.
So Catalonia (and the Basques, woo boy, don't get me started on them) got screwed by geography.

The great legend is that once upon a time, someone said to Sellers at a party, "I've seen so much of you in your great roles, yet after all these years I don't know anything about you. What are YOU like, Peter? What's your personality?"
And Sellers replied, "My personality? I don't have one."

If I am reading this right . . .
It seems that when Philip II/III ruled Portugal, at first they invited the Portuguese to the Spanish court. The Portuguese nobles, like nobles everywhere, mostly didn't care if they went to the palace balls in one city or the other, as long as they kept their autonomy. What chafed their hides was when Philip III/IV got greedy and tried to replace the nobles with Spaniards.

This is illogical, because it imputes that events in Russia occurred because its leaders were atheists, without making any direct connection between the events and the leaders' religious views.

The point is that those who do not believe is not co-extensive with those who are swine intrinsically. It's perfectly possible for someone not to believe in God and yet be a moral person. Conversely, it is also perfectly possible for someone to believe - or at least, to profess to believe in God - and yet behave immorally.

Events in Russia occurred because Czarism collapsed, and the liberals failed, and a new alternative took over which happened to be atheist.
I wasn't saying that the Bolsheviks were brutal because they were atheist. In fact I mooted that it might be possible for an atheist ruler to be a good ruler.
What I did say was that as long as people like Dawkins are running the atheist show, it will be as if people like Lenin are running the show. And if by some mischance they run the government, we're f0qed.

Yep. Some "atheists" are really anti-theists or, in the West at least, anti-Christians. Others are in thrall of a religion like leftism, which usually boils down to Caesar-worship or Gaia-worship. Then there are the simple atheists, who normally aren't radical or evangelical.

Then there is the cultural issue; one rather expects a great deal more personal maturity of a Conservative. That, too, hasn't changed much.

It has become a hallmark of American politics to commit a crime (e.g. embezzling $1.6B of customer money), but effusively support those whose public duties should include prosecution for that crime (e.g. Obama via the SEC), and escape prosecution [or even effective investigation] while one remains such a supporter [***cough*** Corzine ***cough***].
I'd like to see the Statute of Limitations for certain crimes tolled (extended over a period) while politically-involved individuals supported those in office who are in charge of prosecuting such crimes. It'd be a pretzel to come up with the legislative language, but it is so corrosive to our Republic that it deserves the extra work.

This puts too much of of a point on it, and is therefore a bit of a straw man. "Apolitical" doesn't mean that one rejects politics, but rather that one holds no particular views on the subject (cf. the distinction between "interested" and "uninterested").
So, in this context, "atheist" doesn't mean rejecting God, but rather meaning "not believing in God." The distinction is subtle, but real, because someone who rejects God in essence thereby acknowledges God's existence (because how can one reject something that doesn't exist?), whereas, conversely, someone who doesn't believe in God doesn't necessarily reject God (because how can one reject something that doesn't exist?).
So, paradoxically, even in Christian theology an atheist who lived a good life could in principle go to Heaven (because he honestly did not believe in God, but lived well nevertheless), whereas a believer who did not live a good life might not.

Just make it bribery, and make bribery of a public official like murder or diddeling little boys or girls and make it so there is not statute of limitations. That and make bribery of a public official a "capital crime" with the death penalty, for both the briber and the official receiving the bribe.

Profoundly disagree. An atheist is making a religious statement ("there is no God") as solid as a theists' ("there is a God"), where an agnostic says that the evidence is inconclusive. Atheists (having been one) are thereby inevitably driven, further and further, into opposition rather than tolerance.

That is a good point, but only within the context of a state church. In modern parlance, worshiping at the altar of multiculturalism, atheism is the denial of all gods, not just the state-sanctioned ones. Since neither the UK (Dawkins) or the US (most morons) live with a state-sanctioned church [which brings up real tangent -- do we have any Saudi morons????], the distinction between atheism and agnosticism stands.

About a week ago, the local supermarket tripped over its whatsoever and realized it had too many spiral-cut hams -- so it started blowing 'em out at $5 each (up to 10 lbs.). So I got one, carved it off the bone, and have been noshing on 'em since. The original plan was to freeze a bunch, but we really don't have that much freezer.
So, today, the ham tasted a bit sour and was discarded.....so I had frozen tortellini alfredo instead......and here you are, referring to alfredo.....

I was baptized Catholic.
By the time I was about 8, I had become a fervent atheist (reacting to the zeitgeist [in 1970] and all).
By about 16, I realized that 'maintaining what could not be proved' cut both ways.and started to call myself agnostic.
I'm still agnostic, at 50, in the "if God wants me to believe in something, he surely has my phone number" mode. But I've noticed something else.....people of faith are generally nicer to hang out with, while rabid atheists are -- by and large -- assholes.

Good moves, there -- hot chili is actually really helpful for a lot of things. And mucus going dark is a really good flag for medicine-medicine.
What's he on? I don't think amoxicillin works on anything anymore, but the cephalosporins still work.

I have been airing out the house, washing all the bedding, emptying the trash everyday ...
And hitting the OJ and the chili oil ...

If I might make a slight suggestion.....zinc. It's bad for the stomach, so take with food and not too hard.

If this be your "4th" outing, you do not need any help from me.
I do like the apple wood with pork and as you have stated "Coals Around vs. under is an "Off-Set" and so a slow cook approach is good .
I like to quickly spray the meat as it cooks with a spray bottle loaded with the same spices as the rub from time to time...quick open and close least you drag out the cookin to long......wish you a fine BBQ and congrats to your daughter.

I was born in CA, so "BBQ" has had a different meaning for most of my life.....but recently my BH has been in NC on business and has been bringing stuff back. I'm going to be experimenting quite a bit.

One of these days I will attempt a "rightly done" Pork Shoulder roast done NC style which means some SERIOUS babysitting and feeding of said Q for 12+ hours to get it right. I warmed up with 22 lbs Smoked Turkeys for Christmas last year for a total of 10 hours so I'm thinking I'm ready...
we will see....

I envy you doing the "Hog Complete". I live in CA and getting whole hog is a bit difficult in this land of PETA....yet maybe some day....for now I do ribs and brisket with hot-links for the round-out...always slow cooked with love....

In other news, it may be a good thing I don't go out to political events or other places I might encounter certain people. I cannot imagine passing up the opportunity to deck Frum or several others in the punditocracy if it arose.
