UPDATED UPDATE: Yeah comments are down - we have Top Men working on it.
New hamster - crisis averted.
UPDATE: You can watch the filibuster live here. Never mind - it's over now.

Well maybe not law-laws but violating them will certainly get you snarked and mocked.
And that's on the Bingo and Quilting forums - the rest of the Internet plays a bit rougher.
Poe's Law
"Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of fundamentalism that someone won't mistake for the real thing."
i.e. humor doesn't naturally pass through the intertubes without assistance.
Godwin's Law
"As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."
Cohen's Law
"Whoever resorts to the argument "whoever resorts to the argument that. has automatically lost the debate" has automatically lost the debate."
Skitt's Law
"Any post correcting an error in another post will contain at least one error itself."
The Law of Exclamation
"The more exclamation points used in an email (or other posting), the more likely it is a complete lie. This is also true for excessive capital letters."
i.e. THIS!!!! is the sign of the liar/kook.
And then you have the Rules of the Internet.
No 'Stand Your Ground' Hearing for Zimmerman
But there may be a logic to his foregoing the hearing since the burden of proof is different and if he loses, it might hurt him in the trial as well.
The burden of proof does shift between the pre-trial hearing and the trial. At the hearing, the pre-ponderance of evidence must support a self-defense claim; at trial ,the prosecution must establish beyond a reasonable doubt that self-defense was not in play. So conceivably, the same set of facts could lose in a hearing but lead to acquital at trial.
And if the defense is worried that the political pressure on the judge will weigh against dismissal, the pre-trial hearing might result only with the defense tipping its hand in order to generate headlines such as "Judge Rejects Zimmerman Self-Defense Claim". That sort of pre-trial publicity might not be helpful (I am not a high-priced jury consultant, but that is my guess).
Also Trayvon's girlfriend has been caught lying about her age and whereabouts after the shooting.
The long standing weaknesses of Arab militaries are really just a manifestation of the deep problems in the Arab culture. When everything is run by connections and no one takes responsibility, well nothing really works including the military.
For example, Arabs in general don't care for the Western custom of establishing minimum standards for, say, fighter pilots. It's long been known that it is very difficult to wash out an Arab pilot who is well connected (especially a member of a powerful local family). There are some very good Arab pilots but they are a minority. The rest get by. As long as they can take off and land, they can stay in a squadron. During combat exercises, especially with American squadrons, it's understood that the low overall performance of Arab pilots is not to be discussed with the Arabs, or anyone else. Junior American officers get irked by this but it is career suicide to disobey orders on this point.
...The problem extends to ground crews, who don't take responsibility seriously and have to be constantly hounded by their foreign advisors and specialists hired to make sure the aircraft are flyable. And when something goes wrong, the foreign experts are expected to take the blame.
It comes down to a different cultural attitude towards taking responsibility for your actions. It's human nature to avoid failure or taking responsibility for a mistake. Thus we have the concept of "saving face." One reason the West has made such economic, cultural, military, and social progress in the last five hundred years is because they developed a habit of holding people responsible for their actions and giving out the rewards based on achievement. In the West, this sort of thing is taken for granted, even if it is not always practiced.
But in much of the rest of the world, especially the Arab world, things are different.

Brett Kimberlin Still Harassing Aaron Walker and Lee Stranahan
The mystery witness who took a photo of Aaron Walker outside a Howard County, Maryland courtroom last week has been revealed to be serial bomber Brett Kimberlin, according to a comment on the BreitbartUnmasked blog by "Texas Tim", a frequent commenter that appears to be a fake persona.
Every single story at The Ononeon is absolutely true even if it sounds like it came from The Onion.
In the US it's July, August, and September but in Europe it's mainly in the Spring. Scientists have looked at various factors but the strongest one seems to be light and latitude:
If we evolved to be more fertile at certain times, chances are good that photoperiod would be the signal for that timing - and, in fact, the data seem to agree. Birth seasonality is strongest at extreme latitudes where photoperiod is most extreme, and an Italian study found that day length and temperature (which are hard to separate) explained 40% of the variability in seasons of birth.
And your 401(K) fund is delicious and filling with a crunchy revenue-y shell:
Pressure is growing to change incentives for retirement savings as U.S. lawmakers look for revenue, and top earners may pay the price. The budget challenges confronting the federal government are leading to scrutiny of tax-advantaged savings accounts such as 401(k)s because they're among the costliest tax breaks.
...The benefit for 401(k)-type plans is the U.S. government's third-largest tax expenditure, behind only the mortgage interest deduction and exclusion of employer contributions for medical insurance. It is estimated to cost about $429 billion in forgone revenue from 2013 through 2017, according to the administration's latest budget proposal. IRAs will cost about $100 billion over the five-year period.
Orson Scott Card's Superman Story Shelved After Homophobia Controversy
And by homophobia they mean that he doesn't support gay marriage. Not that anything related to the issue even appears in his stories. He just has the wrong opinion and that cannot stand.
I don't wear a tie much these days but I'd sure like to rock a Trinity at the next parole hearing.

The 10% hit now will be better. They don't want to tax the 401K's, they want to confiscate the 401k's, but they will guarantee you a rate of return.
Chances are your rate of return will suck, then be dropped even further because the govt needs the scrilla. Then the govt will start "means testing" on it.

It is interesting to see what happens now that one of the conservatives - Paul - has broken through the RINO leadership.
Could this be a sign that the Republicans will stop rubber stamping everything Obama wants?
Also, how many LIVs are going to hear about Obama wanting the right to execute Americans, in America thanks to this filibuster?

According to Senate tradition it's almost always a junior Senator. Therefore it could well be Fauxcahontas or Heitkamp (the only newly-elected female Dem senators from 2012), but also possibly McCaskill, Shaheen, Hagan, or Klobuchar. It probably isn't an older veteran like Cantwell, Murray, Feinstein, Boxer, etc.

He can ruin your faith with his Obamacare lies
And he only reveals what he wants you to see
He hides like a child, but he's always a tyrant to me
He can lead you to ruin, he can take you or leave you
You can ask for the truth, but he'll try to deceive you
And he'll take what you give him as long as you pay the fee
Yeah, he steals like a thief, but he's always a tyrant to me
CHORUS
Ohhh... he takes care of himself
He can wait if he wants, 'cause it's on your dime
Ohhh... and he never gives a damn
And he never gives in, he just golfs all the time
And he'll promise you more than the garden of Eden
Then he'll carelessly raise taxes and laugh while you're bleeding
But he'll bring out the angriest and the worst you can be
Blame it all on Barack 'cause he's always a tyrant to me
CHORUS
He's infrequently kind and he's suddenly cruel
He can do as he pleases, he's a socialist tool
And he can't be convicted, the press lets him off scott free
And the most he will do is throw hellfires at you,
But he's always a tyrant to me

Bad move on his part. If Rand really wants to keep this going, he'll need rested people in the AM to help him out. If there is a shred of coordination going on behind the scenes, then hopefully there are GOP Senators who are sleeping now who will be on the floor in the morning to provide relief for those who were up all night with Rand.

Dick Durbin is an imbecile.
Dick is just trying to derail Rand Paul. He, and by extension, the left, is unprepared for this....it's obvious in his 'questions' that he doesn't have a handy sheet of pre-prepared talking points to refer to. You want to see it thru rose colored glasses, I see it for what it truly is.
A symbolic gesture meant for political consumption but without making any real changes and causing this President to justify himself and be made to understand his power has limits.
This mini-filibuster did none of that.

That is why I get so frustrated by people who feel entitled to the perfect candidate, who is the perfect conservative, who agrees absolutely with exactly what they think (and nothing else), who will outwork anybody, and spend their own family into bankruptcy, and put up with massive rations of shit -- just to serve -- all the while yelling about other people because they feel entitled.
I do not feel entitled to watch a grown man shit his pants to make a point. 13 hours of standing on a marble floor is enough. The point is made.
Maybe if more people felt less entitled, he would have had the votes to actually make the outcome be different.

"Thurmond also had visited the Senate steam room to get liquids out of his body so that if he drank during the filibuster, he would not have to go to the bathroom."
"Though most Southerners did not help him, Northern senators at times asked Thurmond questions so he could rest his voice. Some minor infractions of Senate rules also were overlooked so he could keep the floor. He was allowed to sit while others made short remarks. During one interruption, Thurmond even gobbled a sandwich in the cloakroom."

This. What we just saw may have been the greatest filibuster, in substantive terms, in the U.S. history: 13 hours without a teleprompter, speaking about the issue, without reading the phone book or discoursing on his favorite rock groups or even talk about budgets and deficits or other political issues. For many reasons this was a great filibuster.
1. I suspect it is much harder to pull off the talking filibuster today.
2. He stayed on topic.
3. We saw 4 junior senators assert themsevles. Are they perfect, no (though Cruz may be), but they are certainly more conservative than the senior senators. Two of them caused the senior senator to make an appearance. The four of them will collectively move the GOP Senate to the right.
4. We see a glimmer of hope in that there are a few who will stand up to Obama.
Bravo.

Durbin was there for quite a while he just wasn't on camera. He had to be there to block the 'sense of the Senate' resolution Rand was trying to pass.
While I remain skeptical that this changed the momentum, or whatever language you prefer, one thing Rand did accomplish was demonstrate that he will filibuster for real, so the next time he threatens it, he'll be taken seriously. We'll have to wait til then to evaluate what that's worth.

The Democrats control the Senate and Durbin was filing cloture.
Cloture: "The cloture rule–Rule 22–is the only formal procedure that Senate rules provide for breaking a filibuster. A filibuster is an attempt to block or delay Senate action on a bill or other matter. Under cloture, the Senate may limit consideration of a pending matter to 30 additional hours of debate."

Rand Paul Paul's heroic performance today/tonight did something that no one here's touched on yet. He cornered a subject everyone will agree is an abhorrent specter; the feds drone striking Americans on U.S. soil. Sure that's oversimplified, that's the point.
Sen. McConnell showing up was smart. 'The Republicans' are leading the charge against BigBrotherDroneStrikes.
With all due respect to the complainers, you're just wrong on this one . . . IMO.
To those who wish I'd have disappeared forever, I'd prefer not to fight, but if its
to be axes, swords and knives . . . I'm ready.

Gotta disagree about McConnell's motivation, I think he's much more of a company man than you you see him.
Sheesh, I don't recall meeting you before so I don't think you're part of the hive that descends . . . hold on to your weapons though, you never know when you'll need them.

First, the politics. Yes McConnell wants re-election and this won't hurt but only help. Yet, I don't think he'd put his re-election eggs into this 'stunt' (cynical) if he didn't see it as a favorable to the R brand as a whole. I think Boehner and McConnell get eviscerated from our side more out of frustration with the way things are than their own job performance. But that's just my read on it.
I was new commenting here, once, about a year or more ago. It was great until I made a bad mistake. I apologized for it. A lot. For a long time if I commented anything, a certain group of commentors would swoop in and it was a full on attack. It became tedious and gross to try commenting at all about anything. I left off it.
Now, I'm back,

WTF?? I thought the issue was using drones to target Americans on American soil?

Of course it was. That is why they said that specifically about 72 million times today. But you will hear people trying to change the subject lots of times over the next 10 days.

Well, you wouldn't expect the average obama cum guzzler to do anything other than change the subject, blur the conversation, and bring up 1000 unrelated fucking arguments that don't amount to a mosquito dick, would you?

No, I don't suppose I would. But it sure is weird. How can anyone be so partisan that they willingly give up the protections of the Bill of Rights?

Dude, no one's looking to defend Al Qaeda. I doubt many on our side are much looking to defend muslims generally.
The problem is this administration, while scrubbing "islamic terrorism" from the national lexicon has been absolutely obsessed with veterans and constituionalists. That is too say, us. Clear enough?

How about this instead: we hold Obama to the same standard that the left held Bush to. Remember those dark, dark Bush years when Bush rushed through the Patriot Act in the midst of a national tragedy, with little debate, so that Bush could fulfill his agenda of plunging this nation into the depths of totalitarian tyranny and goose-stepping fascism where the government had the power to trample all over your rights and do whatever it wished to citizens using the "war on terror" as a mere pretext? Of course it was all bullshit. But hey, that is the narrative that the left built against Bush and it was pretty successful in getting the man demonized as some sort of evil monster. I say, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. And for God's sake, Obama actually IS more dangerous than Bush ever was, Obama is the one who has bragged about "kill lists" and who has ramped up drone strikes to unprecedented levels - what was Bush's big civil libertarian crime? supposedly spying on granny's phone calls to Europe? well at least grandma wasn't drone-striked! - PLUS Obama doesn't have an adversarial press to call him out on his bullshit or abusive tactics so he is literally unchained from any scrutiny. So yeah I have no problem co-opting the narrative building techniques that the left used successfully against Bush, plus it is even more justified with this man than it was with Bush.

And no it is not necessary to completely repeal the AUMF, just modify it to clarify that drone strikes against Americans are not allowed.

Grow the hell up. This is the Internets, not a grade school playground. Do you honestly believe anyone is going to drive cross country to LA or wherever in order to...what, exactly? Engage in a pugilistic exhibition in accordance with Marquis de Queensbury rules?
And since you're possibly using your real name, you might want to consider the legal implications of issuing thinly veiled threats via an interstate transmission.
Maybe you're just young, but here's the thing: if two grown men fight, one or both is likely to get hurt or even killed. One or both could go to jail. Responsible adults don't do that sort of thing. If I'm in a fight, for example, it means I've been attacked and I'm in a fight for my life. I'll keep going until whoever is attacking me is down or I am. It's serious business, so cut that shit out.
