— Ace I don't know if I'd say "stupid," if I were interested in being technically accurate.
I'd say "not very intelligent" and certainly not very "intellectually curious."
But we usually say "stupid" in politics when we mean those things. Even when we don't say it, we mean it.
As far as the political lexicon, he's right, Obama's "stupid."
He wonders why people won't call a not-very-intelligent man not very intelligent. Here's his guess:
Maybe we pundits don’t tell President Obama, “You’re stupid,” because we are proudly showing off our sensitivity to the negative stereotypes that hurtful language engenders in a way that we didn’t feel was necessary when we were telling Ronald Reagan, George Bush and George W. Bush, “You’re stupid,” even though actors, WASPs, and Texans are burdened with their fair share of negative lamebrain stereotypes.More likely it’s because we pundits prize signs of intelligence. We take every opportunity to display our own signs, and President Obama exhibits the same wordy, wonky, academic intelligence indicators that we do, so we don’t call him stupid.
I've been much taken lately with analysis of people's self-definitions of themselves, and the external Signs they post to advertise those internal self-definitions. Before the long weekend, Allah spotted a dopey writer in the New Yorker all but admitting the only thing that matters to her is the signage, not the reality.
First, quoting Jane Meyer of the New Yorker, giving Obama a pass on drone-strike kills because he shows how anguished he is all about it, thus flattering Meyer's own self-conception as The Sort of Person Who Would Put on Shows of Anguish Over Drone Strikes (While Not Objecting To Them Terribly Much In Reality).
One first impression left by President Obama’s much-anticipated speech re-casting U.S. counterterrorism policy is that of the contrast between Bush’s swagger and Obama’s anguish over the difficult trade-offs that perpetual war poses to a free society. It could scarcely be starker. While Bush frequently seemed to take action without considering the underlying questions, Obama appears somewhat unsure of exactly what actions to take. That is not a bad thing: at least he is asking the right questions. ...Obama agonized over other limitations, too..... Obama embraced both constitutional and international legal limits, at least in principle, even as he struggled to define them in practice. In fact, his speech was a paean to the theory of “just war,” which requires a balance between means and ends, demanding proportionality whenever the state resorts to the use of force. It’s a sophisticated and nuanced moral theory, on which the law of conflict rests. Obama has openly grappled with the most difficult questions posed by the most serious thinkers in this area…
Note Meyer's more-or-less explicit concession that while Obama talks up a limitations to his power to order assassinations, these limitations exist only "in principle" and Obama "struggles" to actually actuate them into reality. But hey, "it's a sophisticated and nuanced moral theory," and that ought to count!
Finishing up:
Obama’s evident pain over the [drone] program, whose civilian deaths he said would “haunt” him and his command “as long as we live,” seemed a telling change from the secrecy and winking smugness of the past.
Again, Meyer does not seem to care much that Bush's policies are not very different from the one Obama has adopted-- just that Obama puts on shows of Anguish (flattering her Tribe of People Who Pretend to be Anguished About Any Number of Things) and that Bush, on the other hand, didn't "seem" to show Anguish (which, in contrast, flatters the Tribe of People Who Are Sort of Sick of the Tribe of People Who Pretend to be Anguished About Any Number of Things).
I mention all of this because of O'Rourke's mention of the fact that Obama comes from the writerly class (well, Bill Ayers' book put Obama in that class, as far as appearances), and reporters and wordsmiths are themselves flattered when they flatter someone much like themselves.
Recall David Brooks' ruminations on the impeccable crease of Obama's trousers. And note that this is actually a reflexive boast on the part of Brooks himself-- praising Obama for having a terrific crease in his pants is also praising other people who have terrific creases in their pants, and people who can appreciate a jaunty bit of pants-creasing, a group which just happens to include one David Brooks himself.
When I tell you guys I appreciate you for your wit and no-bullshit attitude, think about what I'm really saying: I appreciate your wit and no-bullshit attitude because firstly I appreciate my own.
Thus it really should be no large surprise to find that a soi-disant (self-proclaimed) intellectual, proudly wearing all the Warrior Plumage of that caste but actually lacking all the achievements typically bestowing the right to wear such plumage should be excessively praised by those who themselves wear the signs of the Intellectual without themselves having done much at all to warrant such a display.
As they flatter him, they first flatter themselves.
What are these conspicuous howls about? Are they really about the tree?
Or are they really about the people howling about the tree?

He's a proud marxist doing exactly what he intended to do, and that's to do as much damage to our nation as he can possibly get away with.
He has every reason to assume that the general issue msm will provide him plenty of cover and concealment, as they are also on board with his acts and actions, except when the "alternative media" digs deep enough to uncover the msm's perfidy and mendaciousness. Only then will the msm pretend to dig, and only so long as they think the general pop is paying attention... in other words, about as long as it takes to microwave a bag of popcorn.

It's like I think about the moslums: What kind of pathetic god needs something so weak and small as a man to protect his honor?
The same for the JEF: Just how weak and pathetic is he that he needs such a constant and persistent defense?

Obama thinks there is no problem (not even natural disasters, terrorism) that Marxism cannot solve. That's stupid.
But he's got the American people buffaloed. That's genius. What Obama, Jarrrett, Soros, and Axelrod accomplished by successfully selling Obama and his agenda to the American people is the result of a brilliant, disciplined marketing plan.
So if Obama's stupid, what's that make us?

2. Smart enough to put words together that sound smart/intelligent/cogent but still common sense stupid
3. Brilliant but playing down to his base
4. Stupid

Liberal stupidity is stunning in it's depth. Just when you think "they can't be THAT stupid," they write something like this.
As everyone here has basically said: Barack Obama's "deep reflection" is akin to Chauncey Gardner. That's not depth - that's retardation.
To anyone who has breathed air outside of NYC, Boston, DC, SF, etc. Obama is not only intellectually stunted, he's DEEPLY stunted. He forgets to salute a Marine, then walks back out and shakes his hand. He gives Queen Elizabeth a collection of DVD's. He gets excited that they have Dijon mustard on Air Force one.
He's wiley - I'll give him that. He has learned the thuggery of Chicago politics, for sure, and is happy to exploit his treachery over law-abiding people. Every scandal he's facing comes back to that same tap-root, so let's not forget that he's a snake.
But snake's are wiley, and single minded - but they're not smart. And neither is Barack "Chauncey Gardner" Obama.

So, in my mind, the question is not about Obama's intellect - he got himself elected twice, that should settle the question right there.
I don't think it is a settled matter on his intellect, rather it seems to be he's got some pretty good (re: savvy political handlers) people who know how to do politics.
He's a first rate idiot when it comes to a common sense approach to most things in life. Of course, if pressed to give citations and examples, all I'd have is anecdotal evidence because his grades aren't open for review.

I was so happy to hear English again, after Belgium and France, in Atlanta's mini-version of Ellis Island (aka "Customs"). These are the three kind people of Paris: a male waiter for breakfast pastries, the maid, and a wonderful (and gorgeous) French waitress the last night at a great restaurant found accidentally (it was also my birthday).
We went through security three times from Paris to Amsterdam to Atlanta--after customs we had to be checked again. I can confirm we were not bringing in anything but walking pneumonia, Belgian chocolate and some wool scarves and books.
I do wish I could have recorded the lines in customs for your entertainment. Let's just say "beauty" is not a requirement to enter our grand country. Nor is drug-free barely holding on meth-head wackos (no, I am not talking about myself). Some WEIRD people in line, y'all, which makes the time pass faster. Husband felt it would have been much easier on us all to have first flown into Mexico and crossed the border illegally than the hot room of customs then security in Atlanta.
Regardless, I am home. Thank you, God. Glad we went before the kindling catch fire over there...and it is simmering and waiting for the spark. Saw the post below about the Baltimore train derailment---agree, lots of coincidences, y'all.

Funny thing about psychology... people on the left think they're the only ones who practice it, and recognize it. Which means two things: 1. They don't think we have any idea what it looks like, and 2. They don't think anything they do falls into the category of pathology.
Which means it's virtually impossible for them to operate without thinking: 1. We have no idea what we're talking about, and 2. We have no idea what we're talking about.

Anyone who has read Bush's book or heard him interviewed knows that heagonized and consulted and prayed over his decision to send Americans to fight. To this day, Pres. Bushmeets returning troops and visits the wounded, all without fanfare and press.
Obama is a wishy-washy, hand-ringing, pearl clutching milqutoast who won't take action (including trying to save American lives in Benghazi) until the poll numbers and Valerie Jarrett tell him what to do.

Thank you, wheatie. I have left the country before but never felt so homesick nor wanted to come home to USA as during this trip. I think it was the "traveling while ill" deal but making the best of the situation...but it was also all of the weirdness going on over there. When the stuff hits the fan I want to be amongst morons with weapons and stuff.
We saw beautiful sights, went to two cathedrals we had been to before (Westminster Abbey and Notre Dame) and took it all in at a slower pace (husband and I). It was all worth it, even with illness, as, by golly, we paid $$$ and were going to see the sights no matter what! I am rather surprised I am not typing from an iron lung at this point after four countries in two weeks and six trains.
I am thinking we were not messed with as we looked sort of messy European by the end of trip and only doing laundry once in middle (it was my version of "backpacking through Europe" with one-carry on bag and giant travel purse which doubles as a weapon). I was paranoid last night in Atlanta I would know someone on plane home (we usually do), as I was a mess and a half. Maybe I do now resemble the Duchess of Alba...

I remain amazed at the number of people that somehow continue to think that Obama is the Anti-Christ, some sort of real devil in human form, evil and beguiling and deceitful. The evidence is that he is just a lot smarter than most people, charming and funny when required, and facing a series of difficult practical and prospective problems, and trying to fix them while faced with determined opposition trying to thwart anything he might want to do. When I read the title to this, and not having any knowledge of the speech itself, I thought the title referred to an endless war with the Republican/Fox News opposition.

To be fair, so was his father.
----------
So was his step-father...and his 'Uncle Frank'.
He was raised by America-hating communists.
And his mother converted to Islam...so both his fathers, and his mother, were muslims.
That joke he made..."I look in the mirror today, and I'm not the young strapping muslim socialist that I used to be"...got a lot of laughs.
But he didn't say that he was not a muslim socialist.
He just said that he was no longer a 'young strapping' one.
That was so typical for TFG.
He throws out the truth in a joking way...but the joke is on 'us'.

The human brain has to train itself to not believe everything the ears hear. I would have thought that was self-explanatory, at least for teenagers, but I found myself having that discussion with my daughter recently.
It's pretty simple: when somebody says "I'm not mad at you." It means... they're mad at you!
When somebody says "this is the absolute truth!" It means they're lying, at least in part.
It's two sides of the same coin. We're programmed to believe what we hear, and we're programmed to lie (and expect other people to believe what we say).

To be serious, you guys, every President should be allowed common hiccups, misspoken words and such but Obama goes beyond these items.
He misspelled Syracuse. He mispronounced common words, (corpsman, Orion) and not because of any regional dialect. He had no clue that Kentucky bordered his own home state of Illinois. He had no clue that Auschwitz was liberated by the Russians and not the Americans. He had no clue that Austrians do not refer to the German language they speak as Austrian. He had no clue regard to simple economic terms. He continue to read from the teleprompter when it clearly was the same text that was from the previous speaker.
Obama is slightly less retarded than Biden.

The writer is in love. This article reads like a PR piece from the Obama administration, written to assuage the guilty conscience of liberals skeptical of Obama's drone policy. Did even Bush and Cheney go so far as to assassinate U.S. citizens without trial? When will we judge Obama by his actions, not his speeches? Imagine the outcry from liberals if a conservative president was killing U.S. citizens abroad, from above. But because a center-left president is in office, and because he's an intellectual (?) and an articulate speaker (?), and because liberals are just so much smarter (?) and morally sensitive (?) than conservatives, and probably because he's black (?), well then, actually it must be OK after all. "It" being not just drones, but an expanded security state, an administration that spies on reporters to get at leakers, etc., etc. I mean, at least he wrings his hands before approving a drone strike, unlike that cowboy Bush. That makes all the difference.

I would bet a large sum of money he would score relatively low on an IQ test.
He would not do well on the mathematical section. He would actually do worse on the language, pattern section depending on which IQ test he took. I'm guessing he would not do well on the spatial testing based on no evidence that supports he has any mechanical skills at all. He may do okay on the verbal section.
The logical reasoning section is the one I would be curious about.

This is the ultimate crisis-as-opportunity finesse. His OWN scandals become his oppportunity. Obama isn't stupid, he's just a phenomenally audacious phenomenon in American history, and very few people really understand this.
Obama is not doing anything. The left as a whole and the 52% are allowing him to do this. If the bank swings their vault open and the bank managers indicate they will look the other way, the most incompetent bank robber is going to be able to get away with large stacks of money.

I don't think it's an issue of intelligence so much as a total and compunctionless audacity (and the skill to dissemble it) never before seen in American history and which, to date, has not elicited ONE clear and knowing (much less politically shrewd and effective) response from ONE Republican. There's no way you can call that "stupid." I'm not saying Obama is "smart" in the ways we usually ascribe to politicians or whatever social figures (I think our society is way off base anyway in its use of the terms "smart," "genius", etc.) But Obama is like our modern age Pechorin, the eponymous character in Mikhail Lermontov's novel "A Hero of our Time," about a scoundrel who was an elegant, cunning and proud composite of the vices of his generation. That's Obama. While most Republicans are biting their nails about how this or that issue will play with the media or the public, Obama is driving ahead relentlessly with what he wants no matter what ANYBODY says. Call him a thug, fascist, pathological liar, narcissist, or all of these things -- but "stupid" doesn't work. It's a meaningless descriptor.

The Internal Revenue Service is in the process of
locking down all computer data across the agency, a sign that
investigations into the scandal-plagued agency may be taking a broader
sweep than initially anticipated.

By locking down, they mean deleting. By sweep, they mean sweeping all the hard drives clean.

If P.J. O'Rourke thinks the scoamf is stupid, he may have to invent new a word to describe Joe Biden.

No sweat, Biden will probably invent the word himself.
