[Updated at 7:21 p.m., Dec. 11: Early Wednesday, 16 people were arrested in connection with the vandalism and robbery that occurred at the home in late November, Lt. Arthur Scott of the Los Angeles County SheriffÂ’s Department said....

A similar incident happened earlier this year to a retired NFL player.
About 300 teenagers are realizing they picked the wrong place to throw a wild party after breaking into a former NFL player's second home and causing more than $20,000 in damage.

Brian Holloway, a former offensive tackle for the New England Patriots, was in Tampa, Florida, over Labor Day weekend when his son told him he was receiving tweets about a party at their home in Stephentown, New York, Holloway said...

44 "Solution: Robot caretakers with frickin' lasers on their heads."

The family of a guy I have met socially a few times own something like six houses.

One of them is in an area where this sort of social media bust-in has become endemic, and where the local law enforcement have basically quit trying to do anything other than passive, ineffectual "security theater".

So the guy who they found to live in that house to keep an eye on things is a no-nonsense veteran who has a personal arsenal sufficient to see off even the most determined mob.

I find myself half-hoping that the kids will try him on for size. They will speedily learn that not everyone is a pushover.

If I'm remembering his gun collection properly, this is one of the few people I have met who own a 10-gauge shotgun. I'm imagining the sound of a 10-gauge being fired over the heads of the party mob. And then the faint liquid gurgle of two hundred pairs of pants being pissed in unison.

104 This whole party crashing/f'ing up people's houses took a funny toll here in Baltimore recently.  A bunch of punks found out that a rich girls parents were out of town and they stormed in and had a party.  The guys thought that it would be funny to take a dump in the closet, on the pool table and generally trash this house.  The father found out who did the destruction and went to the kids' parents and asked them to pay for the damages.  The parents all said no.  The home owner then found out where some of these boys were planning to play sports in college and went to the Athletic directors of these colleges (ivy league, etc) and showed them the evidence.  All of them were dropped immediately.  No place on the team, no scholarships.  Good life lesson I say...

Hey, I'm reading Jeff Guinn's biography of Charles Manson. (I know, right? Light and fluffy.) While we clearly don't share the same politics, he does bring across what scuzzy assholes the counter culture revolutionaries were. Andrea Dworkin, in Right Wing Women (NO WAIT! COME BACK!) had those leftie sacks bang to rights. (Her take on conservative woman, however, left a sour taste in my mouth. The misogyny of the hippies and beats is well documented. What she said about conservative women, however, was condescending, dehumanising and completly avoided the arguments at hand.)

However...(My GAWD, that was some tangent.)

What's really fascinating is (1) how things only really hit the fan when  it stopped being upper middle class white kids playing at being revolutionaries and started attacking the wider social fabric and affecting people who didn't have the social and famility structures, or the intelligence to keep afloat. (I'm thinking of the young women he targeted in particular, but it applies to lots of things.) And (2) the take on prison reform, and nature versus nurture. They just kept giving Manson chance after chance after chance. And this was in the 40s and 50s. I'm veering wildly between thinking of it as necessary reforms with one spectacular failure, and wondering what the hell they were thinking.

I figure that SCOTUS may end up telling DC to get their shit together or they'll impose "must issue" permits and declare the laws used to kick the last remaining FFL out of town to be unconstitutional.

129 Best book I've read on Pompeii? Ghosts of Vesuvius: A New Look at the Last Days of Pompeii, How Towers Fall, and Other Strange Connections By Charles Pellegrino. Its moving account of what happened there is interwoven with first person accounts on 9/11, as connected by the physical dynamics of collapsing air columns (ash column v buildings). The same author later got suckered into writing a bogus account, but "Ghosts" is a good read. link (not) in sig (Pixy forbids).

130 When I was a kid, before I was old enough to officially work on the books, snow shoveling was our job. Every evening after dinner, my friend Kevin and I would start hitting all the houses on our street that didn't have kids to do the shoveling. Snow blowers were enormous, expensive and notoriously unreliable back then. And therefore pretty rare. We had one but it spent most of its life sitting in the garage waiting for repair. Kevin and I charged one dollar apiece per driveway. Kids today want 20 bucks. Most of our customers "tipped" us by giving us two bucks each. And we usually got invited inside after for some cookies and cocoa. Winter was when we made most of our money. Nobody wanted to hire anyone to cut their grass (though I did have an off-the-books gig cutting grass for a local apartment complex-I got to use a rider lawnmower-the pinnacle of coolness when you're a 12 year old boy!) We shoveled as quickly as possible (while still doing a good job) so we could get as many driveways done as we could and make more money. We'd keep at it till long after dark, coming home half-frozen and beat down tired. And with more money in our pockets than any other kid on the block. Hard work and clever entrepeneurship. Today, we'd probably be shut down by the town for not having a permit or something.

My cow-orker with seven kids (including two college grads who get their rent and insurances and cars paid for because they don't want to have jobs; the youngest is in jr high) was bitching the other day about having to shovel.  I said, "I thought you have children living at home, why are you shoveling?"

"Oh, they won't do it."

"What?"

"I've asked them to, but they won't do it.  They don't like it."

If I'd said "No, I don't like it" to shoveling (or any household chore), I'd have been sleeping in the garage that night (not really, because after half an hour I'd have been cold and bored and given in).  But no, this guy just shrugs and does the shoveling himself.  And then bitches about it at work.

During one of those secret WW2 conferences, Churchill asked him straight out what did he do with the Kulaks and Stalin said he killed them all. Oddly, they are still lying about Katyn. And Stalin's grandson tried to sue somebody a few years ago for claiming Katyn was on Stalin's orders. You didn't scratch your ass without Stalin's orders. So, to claim that they would murder 25k high ranking Polish officers without his permission is ridiculous.

She'll work even harder to get them scholarships if they're good kids who worked for her. Many kids can get a scholarship somewhere if they put in the work. But frequently she gets a moderately great athlete with a bad attitude. They all want to go to Oregon or Stanford or some place like that. Little do the knuckleheads know, coaches talk to each other. She's very careful about what she says, but a coach will twig VERY quickly if you don't say things like "They have a great attitude and will work with you."

214 I have a relative with a 2 or 4 gauge shotgun. ------------------- The math here is easy, and interesting, kind of. A four gauge shotgun would have a bore that was of a dimension such that 4 ( '4 guage') lead balls which fit the bore would weight in toto, 1 lb., or, 0.25 lb. each. Now, the density of lead is 0.410 lb/cubic inch, therefore, a 0.25 lb. ball of lead would be 0.61 cu. in. That, in turn, means a lead sphere of 1.052 inches diameter, which would be the bore. Big, but not cannon sized. The same calculation for a 2 gauge results in a .5 lb. ball, etc., which leads to a bore size of 1.325. Again, big, but not huge. Small naval cannon were used that were on the order of 1.25"...., so the 2 gauge is in that range. Probably not much fun to fire.

Posted by: Vic at December 12, 2013 12:35 PM (T2V/1)

According to anthropologists the actual disease American aboriginals had is called yaws, which is one of the four forms of treponematosis. Syphilis is also a form of treponematosis. There are four variants of treponematosis, yaws and three others believed to have evolved from yaws. Yaws itself is believed to be about 1.6 million years old.

There is much debate whether Europeans brought the syphilis variant of treponematosis to the New World or if the Europeans contracted yaws, which later mutated into syphilis (presumably in Europe).

One thing seems certain from the archaeological record, though, that Amerinds suffered from yaws pre-European contact. Europeans also suffered from it through the slave trade as early as the 15th century.

Who originally caught syphilis from whom and transmitted to whom is still a matter of much debate.
