Political Red Lines
— DrewM

ThereÂ’s a lot of anger in the conservative base about the amnesty sellout thatÂ’s underway and disappointment in one time favorites like Marco Rubio but what will it translate to in 2014/2016.

The cry will always be…”But the Democrat is worse!”. This is usually sort of true but so what? The only way to reform the GOP is to stop rewarding it for selling out on basic principles. Even if you support amnesty (and there are conservatives who do), I would think that expanding the disaster that is ObamaCare is a red line we should all agree not to cross. And yet….

You can’t call me a RINO because I’m not a Republican. I had to reregister to vote before the election last year and went “independent”. Now clearly it’s nearly impossible for me to conceive of voting for a Democrat so I’m not an “independent” in the traditional “swing voter” sense. I am however a “swing voter” now in that I will either not vote for a Republican or will vote Libertarian or another 3rd party.

Not everything can be a “Go to ELEVENTY!1!11!!1! issue” but there has to be two or three key issue a candidate or a party simply can’t violate and still lay a claim to your support. Right now for me, I will not vote or support in any way a Republican who votes for an amnesty first plan or anything that expands or “fixes” ObamaCare in anyway. Those are my two red lines.

I sucked it up in the past and voted for McCain and then Romney. No more.

The GOP will continue to lie to us and count on our support because we always come back. Why would they change when thereÂ’s never a price to pay? Even when we rally together to change the party and elect a guy like Marco RubioÂ….nothing changes.

It’s time to stop buying into the scare tactics of…”The Democrats are worse”. It might be true but that doesn’t mean that the Republicans are the answer. Yes, it’s hard to kill a political party and build a new one but it’s happened before. That it’s so hard to do is an indication of how important it is that it be done.

ItÂ’s time to hold individual members responsible if they support garbage like this, either for reelection or if they attempt to run for higher office. If Amnesty should somehow get by the House, then itÂ’s time to hold the whole damn party accountable.

So, what are your red lines? Really think about what line canÂ’t be crossed and then hold Republicans to them not just in their words but their deeds.

Adedd: One thing I should have noted...amnesty isn't a case of the GOP being on the wrong side of the public and simply unable to stem the tide. This is an issue where Republicans have strong public support and the party in government is simply caving in despite the express wishes of its voters (in 2007, 2008 and 2012). This is basically mutiny by the political class. It must be punished.

Recipe for disaster.  How many Republicans in the House have already crossed "red lines"?.  And yet if enough conservatives hadn't held their noses and voted for them, Pelosi would be speaker and whatever crap amnesty bill comes out of the Senate would pass the house in 5 minutes.  Live to fight another day.

It's not that the democrat alternatives are "worse", it's that they are a thousand times worse.  Punish people in primaries IF WE CAN HOLD THE SEAT ANYWAY.  But stop pissing away seats in purple staes and districts in the name of "purity".

27 Amnesty and Obamacare expansion for me too. Any further increases in Social Security/Medicare/Medicaid. I'm not talking a refusal to means test, I mean actually expanding benefits. Gun control. Fuck you sideways with a rusty chainsaw, Toomey. This post brings up something for which I have no solution. We keep talking consequences and taking over the party and look where we are. Rubio is now advocating the positions which he ran against. Toomey's inexplicable cave on gun control. Jan Brewer and the sweet, sweet Federal Medicaid money. Ayotte and amnesty. Fine. Conservatives show up and nominate and elect people who, once in office, stab conservatives in the face. And there's nothing to be done about it. Why do I say that? Because who is to say the next person won't do exactly and precisely the same thing. I don't see a solution, I truly don't. There are no consequences to lying very more so than usual for a politician, getting elected and then completely switching positions. By the next election, it's too late. Nothing gets repealed. Not a dime gets cut. Nothing ever changes. I don't see a way out that does not involve fire and famine and blood.

43 2 The GOP is an empty husk of a political party. It's time for it to die. Pretty much. The GOP is a collection of know-nothing consultants and self-styled insiders. It has no ideological underpinning. It is a for-profit enterprise. Its main focus is conning donors into believing someone will challenge Democrats, or conning wealth candidates like Romney into paying for their services. The money flows in. The challenges never come. And then more money is demanded.

Like most things.

I look at it from the reverse point of view of "red lines." That is, not from the point of view of what few things the GOP gets wrong now and then and what I should refuse to tolerate a la carte, but rather what is it that they actually get right anymore and why I should tolerate their existence at all. There is no more benefit of the doubt, as I see it. I go into EVERY issue assuming a sell-out. They have failed their fundamental reason for being. They are by now so corrupted and so pathologically subservient to the powers and prerogatives of the cultural Left they are useless. Indeed, worse than useless. However I remain open to the possibility of iconclastic figure emerging from the party, and would welcome the revolt he would lead.

95 The GOP consultant class and it's spoils system is to entrenched in the republican party to ever really reform it. At this point the GOP wants to hold enough seats so their consultants and lobbyists can get their friends and business partners rich by spreading donation money around. A new party will by necessity have to black list all of these people along with 90% of elected office holders at the federal level. By the time the thing gets off the ground we'll be $22 trillion in debt at least and that's just by 2016. the dems win that one we're looking at 27-28 trillion by 2020. Economic collapse, half of mexico voting in our elections... we're good and truly fucked. Oh yeah and we have to run a real reformer. I have many red lines, and the GOP has crossed virtually every one of them in the past ten years or so.

Any way, to answer your question, here are the things I want  in exchange for my vote (in no particular order):

Strict adherence to the Constitution as it was    written.

Everyone  is treated the same way all the time. This means no exemptions  for any group, such as the ones passed out for OCare.   Politicians who violate the law should be made into examples, frequently, until they all get the message that corruption will not be  tolerated.

Our borders sealed tight.

Dedication to the honest practice of capitalism, with   a diversity of opportunity for all to make as much money as they wish.

A  small, unobtrusive and inexpensive government that does what's best for the country and that leaves me alone.

Treat our enemies  as the enemy: this means no foreign aid to any country that doesn't practice basic recognition of the freedoms we hold dear.  This also includes a strong military that isn't some  PC,  Progtarded  social experiment, but dedicates  itself to winning any conflict by killing people and breaking things.

And education system that focuses on our national heritage, truth and reality. (Billy Ayers' types need not apply.) Again, this is no place for socialistic indoctrination  the like  of  which we're seeing  today.

140 Are the democrats really worse when the Republicans just end up caving and passing exactly what the democrats would have done anyways?

Exactly -- Democrats merely start with whatever Republicans are willing to do, and then exaggerate it.

The GOP is a bunch of cowards and assholes, because most of what the Left says about them is actually true -- they exist to funnel money into the hands of big corporate sponsors, they really don't care about free markets, etc.

That's why the GOP is going along with amnesty.  That's why the GOP is on board with massive bailouts.  They really are the corporate whores that the Democrats say they are.  (Of course, the Democrats are equally corporate whores, just for slightly different corporations, but the Republicans can't or won't take a stance against Democrat corporate whoring.)

That's why the GOP hates the TEA Party types -- they actually believe in the principles of economic freedom and Constitutionalism that the GOP merely pretends to believe.

142 And the real difference between the Republicans and Democrats is......... No difference. And the benefit of voting for one or the other is...... No benefit, for normal citizens. We are beyond the realm of "saving" the Republic. It is now just a hollow husk of what it once was; for all my life, it has been hollowed out by our political "leadership", the Republican-Democrat Co-dominium. Burning or not burning, we are now in a situation where there is no clear choice for a thinking citizen who actually cares about what the written word or law is supposed to mean. We are trapped without any possible choice that at least gives us some kind of moral sense that "we have done our best". What we are now faced with is an amoral government that will give lip-service to the law, and ignore the substance. The government now has the power to individually coerce any of us to "behave" or "else". Anyone that works in a company that has to interact with the regulatory nightmare of the Federal Government knows exactly how oppressive and overbearing it has become.

Though when you talk about forming another party, you're still operating under the assumption that it is politically possible for Americans to be free with the current electorate. Adding 20 million communists ought to clarify that notion.

157 My red line is spending, particularly entitlement spending. I actually voted for Kerry in 2004 because of Medicare Part D. I'm not proud of it, Kerry's an idiot, and his running mate was even worse; but I wasn't voting for him as much as I was voting against Bush. But I still argue that it was the right decision, because if Kerry had won, the Republicans would never have lost the Senate in 2006 and would have had an easier time taking back the White House in 2008. Obama certainly wouldn't be president today.

163 Drew, I think a big part of the problem is that conservatives are still playing the game like it's supposed to be played. Particularly, in Presidential primaries- ie. look at several potential candidates and try to find the best one. This allows a guy like Romney or even McCain to slide through as he is one hundred percent backed by the GOP establishment. This time around we need to be smarter as conservatives and get behind one, possibly two guys early (no, not Santorum). Then hone in early and keep Jeb Bush or whoever from achieving any victory in any of the early states. Same in Senate and House races - maybe our guy won't ultimately win but we can knock the current RINO out of the easy life in DC. enough of that and the others will shape up.

168 Obamacare. Not done without Republicans. Wouldn't have passed out of committee if a Republican (Snowe?) hadn't voted for it. Wouldn't have passed the Senate if the Republicans had refused unanimous consent (that just takes one Senator with some stones- which means there were none) on the reading of the bill. Or if they had committed to a filibuster over Christmas. Wouldn't have passed the House with similar tactics. "All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

192 I keep seeing comments like "teach those Republicans a lesson" and whatnot.  Yes, they suck but we absolutely cannot allow the democrats to continue to transform this country into a socialist nightmare to "teach the Republicans a lesson".  Too many assholes stayed home because Romney wasn't conservative enough and look what we got.    Scandals, lies and the implementation of Obamacare.  I saw person after person proclaim they would never vote for Romney, long after he was the nominee.  And of course, it appeared after the election that we lost because republicans stayed home.  Unfortunately, our choices are giant douche and turd sandwich, but the turd sandwich is so obviously worse.

193 So I shouldn't even vote for genuinely conservative Republicans? I should be actively working to destroy the Republican Party? I mean, if that's what we're saying, then let's just say it clearly. In the general? Go ahead. If Republicans actually start selecting conservatives (who then act conservative), they can win back my support. But in the primaries (for closed primary states- so, not Texas), you have to make a stand. Continuing to support the Republican Party- even via registration- signals to them that you agree with them. Do you agree with them? Do you agree with McConnell, Boehner, Graham, McCain, and Rubio? Because those 5 (more or less) ARE the party.

After awhile you get a feel for when a system is close to cascade failure... when that last stress is put on the system, which overwhelms the built in fault tolerance of the system.

We've been there for awhile.  Its a combination of the Fed Res making it a NEGATIVE to save money (Inflation greater than Interest), the Regulatory State run by Mandarins, and the insular Washington culture which no longer represents average America.

The Republican party has been part of the destruction of our way of life.  Nixon?  EPA.  Bush 43? DHS.. Bush 41? American with Disabilities Act... all entities which are given the ability to write regulations which have the force of Law... or to choose which Laws to enforce.

We had that situation in my county when a supervisor position was "in place" for the next R's turn.  So, we had a feisty older broad who refused to accept that.  She went door to door,  in jungle-like heat and humidity, and talk to any voter who answered the door.  She won.  And promptly became a RINO.

306 For 4 years, I worked with the Tennessee GOP to help them gain control of the TN Legislature. I am a gun rights activist--it is THE reason I was involved, and they knew it. When we FINALLY won and took control for the first time since reconstruction, one of the folks me and my group worked closely with was selected as the #2 in party leadership in the TN House. SOOPER EXCITED!! Then, she started killing all our bills. Bills that she said she supported, and had in fact voted for in the past (but were killed by the Democrat Majority). When confronted, this is what she said: "It's not like you're all of a sudden going to start voting Democrat over this." She soon learned that she was right. Voters didn't switch parties over this single issue. Instead, we primaried her ass and won BIG TIME: http://tinyurl.com/m2fdcvy Food for thought.

This problem exists because there are sizable numbers of people that are SUPPOSED to be on our side of the aisle who are more than willing to eat the next shit sandwich that is offered up by the Republican Party. We are told incessantly that eating the shit sandwich is a must, yet ever more ground is lost to liberals over time because the shit sandwich that we threw our support behind resulted in the compromising away of principles that are important to actual conservatives.

309 Here's the thing, if establishment Republicans 'lose' a Presidential election they will 'win' professionally because the Democratic Party will always seek to expand and enrich and empower government. Which includes the GOP Senators and Representatives who will win their ideologically less diverse states. It's a rigged game. When you voted for Bush and won, you got... a larger and more intrusive government every year. When you voted for McCain and lost you got... a larger and more intrusive government each year. If you refuse to vote for anyone you'll get... a larger and more intrusive government each year. It's a rigged game. It's silly to pretend otherwise. Don't play it. Letting the Repubs burn down seems a legitimate way of forcing the remaining remnants to wake up. The problem is that doing so will amount to a doubly-apocalyptic hit to the nation when the Dems actually reach their goal of clearing the field of all opposition. It'll only be them and We The People, and I don't think there are enough of us to fight the resulting runaway tyranny should it ever be so completely unleashed. The Obama Effect isn't going to disappear after he's gone from office; his legions will remain in the government and the Republic's destruction will accelerate. We don't need a weaker R party, we need a stronger one, and that begins with primaries. I believe the message can be sent by making examples of Rubio and his ilk. I mean, we knew about McCain and Grahamnesty; we had no idea Rubio was a plant. We have to punish him severely by laying waste to his political aspirations and dumping him like the lying piece o' crap he has turned out to be. Reduce him to a muttering hobo and then leave him to Ace's tender mercies. I'll even buy the Valu-Rite.

This is a good point, perhaps we all need to become involved in our local parties more often, and putting together good primaries as well.

At the presidential level I'm not sure the long drawn out primary system helps us, however a "long drawn out" primary would look a hell of a lot different at the congressional and even the senate level (magnified at the state level.)

Currently our politicians are hardly held accountable, they live in gerrymandered districts and no one dares compete against them.

If they had fear for their jobs, maybe they'd try harder.

357 Roughly 40 percent of Americans claim that they are conservative, roughly 22-25 percent claim that they are liberal.  The rest are in the middle.  This is deceptive because out of those 40 percent who claim that they are conservative--probably only half of those are principled with red lines.  So we are talking about 1/5 of the U.S. total population--probably not even a majority in the Republican party.  Those voters in the middle are typically LIV voters that will vote for whomever the media tells them is trendy and pathbreaking.  They vote on celebrity and biography.  Those who are liberals are Bolshevik leftists who desire sinecures of power to oppress and command the little people who have false consciousness.

What is the point of this little though exercise--it might be possible to capture the Republican party but only after such a crashing electoral disaster that many of the cockroach consultant/fundraising/dem-lite candidates flee to the Democrat party.  See 2008-2010 cycle as a mild example.  Now, this would greatly accelerate the Burning Times as giving Democrats undivided power is like as PJ Rourke said giving whiskey and the car keys to a teenage boy.

A more achievable and devious way to pull Republicans to the right is allow double billing on second parties akin to the NY system.  Allow candidates to run on different lines--in NY you can run on the Republican line only or sometimes the Republican -Conservative line.  Votes are pooled.  That way we end up with more accurate information--Republican Libertarian, Republican Conservative, even Republican-Liberal etc. The classic problem with third parties is the wasted vote and the argument that any Repub is better than a Dem etc.  Why not blow up the paradigm by causing the candidates to compete for the different lines--that way you can vote conservative with a clear conscience--if the candidate disdains seeking the conservative party nomination--that tells you right there that they will run out on your principles at the worst possible time.  Call it the Truth in Party Packaging Act.  Best thing is that no federal action is required--simply state legislative action.

Re Demographics are Destiny argument--umm no.  Trends continue until they don't-- attributed to noted economist Herb Stein.  For example, Trees do not grow to the sky, markets go up until they go down, home prices increase until they don't, pay and income increase until it doesn't.  The subsidies of the welfare state fueling a lot of this growth are about to disappear (either undermined by inflation or through budget cuts) which tends to put quite a damper on kid production.  Do a lot of genealogy stuff and have an economics background--you see some generations with a greater number of kids and some with less.  Hard times reduces the number of kids even apart from birth control.

Ventura County narcotics detectives say they've arrested a Los Angeles man a second time for operating a marijuana plantation in the back country.  They say 36-year-old Ricardo Juarez Valencia was arrested, convicted, sentenced, and deported in 2012 for operating a pot plantation near Rose Valley.  This time detectives, with the help of the sheriff's helicopter, found marijuana grows near the Chorro Grand Trail, Belly Ache Falls, and an unnammed canyon north of Matilija Canyon Road.  They seized more than 6200 plants.  Valencia was arrested shortly after that on a violation of probation warrant.  Deputies say at his LA home they found guns, money, marijuana, and materials used to irrigate and operate a remote pot plantation

360 323 In the intervening 10 year period, while Democrats then wipe out the Republican party and turn the entire system into a self-sustaining political machine, I'm sure this new party will really be effective at holding protests and might even win a couple of state or local positions. Ayup.

361 Grognard, whereabouts are you in the Great White North? I'm from TO. Also, I'm going to start making contingency plans to move back to Canada. I'm still a citizen there, so getting my family in won't be a problem. As far as taking it over is concerned, it should be relatively easy. They have no military to speak of, save for UN forces. The citizens are poorly armed in comparison to the US. There would be almost no resistance from the locals. I say we head to Alberta where we could gain control of the oil fields to start. Mostly wide open spaces there and we could see them coming from all angles. Also, Calgary Stampede girls.

I'd like Boehner to go, but I will at least concede that it has to be an artful "hey we tried to do something about this problem, but the Senate fucked everything up" rather than just saying outright "we won't pass any immigration bill period".

But at the end of the day, the House members still have to publicly cast their vote on way or another, it's not just Boehner that decides.

412 Fair enough but when guys like Rubio are tossed out of the party for merely one disagreement "merely one disagreement?" O_o o_O O_O o_o *_* This is not some "mere" disagreement over tactics, or some minor policy issue. This is heart of the Republic, Rule of Law stuff. Amnesty itself is bad enough. If I must, I'm willing to swallow that bitter load pill, but only AFTER Border/Immigration enforcement has been strengthened and only without any chance of naturalization. But that's not what Rubio et. al. Want. They want naturalization. They want to hand over this country to the Democrats for all time anyway. Every single amendment which would do something real on border security (before or after the amnesty, natch) has been shot down- with no votes from Rubio. Every amendment which would prevent citizenship for amnestied illegals has been shot down- with no votes from Rubio. This isn't "mere" disagreement over whether we can "kick them all out or not," this a fundamental difference in world-view that says (on his side) that any immigrant who followed the rules is a sucker, and anyone who disagrees with full-bore, citizenship-granting (however "eventual") amnesty is "heartless." Seems to me someone lost a Presidential primary over saying something much less offensive to National Sovereignty than that. I'm not "kicking Rubio out" because he thinks granting illegals some form of legal status is necessary- there are a lot of conservatives who think that. I'm "kicking him out" because he wants to sell out our National Sovereignty for net return of nothing.

Yeah, disregarding the results of the last Amnesty and setting the stage for a permanent Progressive federal government amounts to more than "merely one disagreement" and I think you know that. That's a core principle being violated. It's on the level of "disagreeing" on whether the 1st or 2nd Amendments should be overturned. What you're basicay saying is that you have no core principle that a Republican politician can violate without losing your vote. 427 432 Burn the Witch,

I clawed my way out of poverty...I've been working poor..

How in the fuck can the GOP go to the working poor who have been hurt by this economy and say "we're on your side" when they bring in 33 million or more new competitors?

No I'm done with the party if they do this.

Replace the GOP....

there is a Capitalist case to be made to the working poor and the GOP is not the party to deliver it.

Is your position that I should support Rubio?  Why?

430 As my wife says "the problem of voting for the lesser of two evils is, your still voting for Evil."

I'm going Libertarian or Constitution Party.  I know they can't win, but I hate the slow road to hell.  Bring it.  If Palin sets up the Tea-Party, I'm all in.

431 I would also point-out that most of the those referring to Sen. Paul, Rep. Ryan, and others as "traitors" call Ronald Reagan a great conservative icon (or some variant) despite the fact that Reagan signed the Simpson-Mazzoli Act of 1986. You cannot have it both ways.

OK don't pull this HORSESHIT.  You don't argue that someone is good and to be trusted by referencing someone you do like's biggest mistake.  Its incredibly stupid.  Hey Reagan fucked up by supporting amnesty and getting screwed by not getting border security so we should totally get behind the guys that want to do the exact same shit all over again.  BRILLIANT!

433 "And yet if enough conservatives hadn't held their noses and voted for them, Pelosi would be speaker and whatever crap amnesty bill comes out of the Senate would pass the house in 5 minutes. Live to fight another day." It's not about enforcing "purity", it's about having a functional opposition party. Right now we don't have one. The Republican leadership is generally useless. Boehner is incompetent as Speaker and should be replaced, but the party bosses won't do that because they really don't care. The handful of effective Republicans are constantly undermined by the unwillingness of the leadership to support them or back them up when it comes to actually doing anything. And every time the GOP is outsmarted or surrenders an issue, they provide the Democrats with bipartisan cover. Making it easier for the Democrats and their media lackeys to marginalize actual conservative principles.

435 Its better that Romney lost. At best, he was just a speedbump against the Left's Long March. He would have repaired the economy and let the Nanny State limp on for a decade longer. I'm glad he lost.

436 "Not everything can be a “Go to ELEVENTY!1!11!!1! issue” but there has to be two or three key issue a candidate or a party simply can’t violate and still lay a claim to your support. Right now for me, I will not vote or support in any way a Republican who votes for an amnesty first plan or anything that expands or “fixes” ObamaCare in anyway. Those are my two red lines." Good for you.

437 440 How in the fuck can the GOP go to the working poor who have been hurt by this economy and say "we're on your side" when they bring in 33 million or more new competitors? - Right. The Republican Party is a deadly enemy of the white working class, as is the Democratic Party. Of course this is also bad news for blacks who want jobs. They don't care about either. This is all about the browning of America, so politicians on the right can have a "cool" non-white voting base like politicians on the left have. It's a form of status envy. And the same game is being played out in other white countries, with "conservative" politicians competing to import massive numbers of non-whites where they are not needed. (What is the real, credible economic reason Sweden needs Somalis? It does not exist.) Our politicians are destroying us for trivial reasons. They must not be rewarded for doing this.

438 Americans aren't scared of Hispanics per se. Me, I married a delightful Cubana. But, as Elena points out, when you specify Mexicans, there is this funny little problem. For two hundred years, Mexicans have systematically cultivated bitterest hatred for "gringos." Ever notice, "gringo" is Mexican for "white man"? And this special loathing is going to vanish from their hearts by crossing a line the white man is too weak to defend?

Amen, Drew.

I share your two Red Line Issues: Amnesty and Obamacare.

I will not vote for any Republican or candidate for office who does not outright and without exception oppose these two issues.
If it means turning out to write in Mickey Mouse on election day, so be it.

Currently Amnesty is the brighter of the two bright Red Lines.

441

"ItÂ’s time to stop buying into the scare tactics ofÂ… 'The Democrats are worse'. It might be true but that doesnÂ’t mean that the Republicans are the answer. Yes, itÂ’s hard to kill a political party and build a new one but itÂ’s happened before. That itÂ’s so hard to do is an indication of how important it is that it be done.

"ItÂ’s time to hold individual members responsible if they support garbage like this, either for reelection or if they attempt to run for higher office. If Amnesty should somehow get by the House, then itÂ’s time to hold the whole damn party accountable.

"...This is basically mutiny by the political class. It must be punished."

That's all you needed to write.

I've said a few times, in a few places after the last election, that anyone at all who thinks they're going to be able to convince me with the argument that "we should elect this guy simply because of his 'electability'" is blowin' smoke. Same for the general.

That dog don't hunt.

Never again.

It is to laugh, imbecile.

Rubio and Ryan are both dead to me over amnesty. The 'pubs nominate either of them, I'm gone. Third party, apathy, non-vote ...whatever.

I may be forced to watch this county sink into dystopian dust, but I don't have to be a participant in its demise.

Abortion and Obamacare.

It looks like I'm the only one on this thread who named abortion. That may be why the national GOP has a pro-life plank but does precious little to secure the rights of the unborn (and why my state's Republican GOP legislators, who do answer to a pro-life electorate, are doing so).

Posted by: KingCranium at June 20, 2013 12:18 PM (lHn6+)

443 All the hand-wringing and "Big Tent" talk after the last election struck me as stupid.  The GOP fails because it fails to stick to its ostensibly conservative core.

What the analysts don't get is that people want a choice, and they choose stupidly sometimes.  When they get tired of GOP bullshit, they'll try Dem bullshit, at least for a while, if nothing else than for a change -- to see if they like it better.  When the line between the parties is blurred, when the GOP is nothing more than Dem-lite, voters don't have much of an incentive to vote GOP when they're ready to switch back.

If the GOP (or its replacement) wants to be relevant, it needs to pick a philosophy and run with it, realizing that voters are going to vote for the opposition occasionally.  It's a normal cycle.  The surest way to become irrelevant is to adulterate the core principles with populist crap in the hopes they'll somehow grab the low-information non-partisan middle.

Long story long:  build the brand and when people are ready, they'll be back.

Strategery.

445 I'd say amnesty is a big one, and I'll throw Obamacare, abortion, gay marriage, and any other attempt to get a stimulus on the pile.

O-Care should be obvious, but don't let the fake outrage about Republicans wanting to shut down the government and obstruct the President make you guys start hedging on why you don't support it. Make Democrats own that thing then, now, and forever.

Abortion and gay marriage: Stop neglecting the voters who will faithfully vote Republican rather than see a Democrat in office. Abortion, except for cases of rape, incest, and the mother's health, is wrong. People keep talking about how much support gay marriage supposedly has, but remember, the only number that matters is 31. Thirty-one states have said marriage is the union of a man and woman, and that encompasses more than just red districts. Make Democrats explain to the people why their beliefs about traditional marriage is nothing but latent bigotry. Make them spit in their eye and legalize it anyway. Don't be complicit, and don't become slaves to poll data. It never does tilt in our favor, even when actual votes do.

Stimulus: I don't care how many times Democrats talk about tax credits as if they're tax cuts, don't fall for the trap of voting for another stimulus.
