Poll Puts Al Franken at Only 39% Approval in Minnesota
— Ace

The reason? Obama is at 37%, and Al Franken has been a loyal Yes Man for Obama and Obamacare.

Franken's at 51% disapproval (people who rate his job performance as "fair" or poor).

Meanwhile, the GOP is taking the Federalist Meatball's advice and looking to expand the 2014 Senate contest into blue states.

In 2012, Democrats snagged Senate seats from Republicans in states where the GOP should have prevailed with relative ease.

In 2014, Republicans want to show they can play that game, too.

The GOP could conceivably capture the Senate by winning in seven states currently represented by Democrats but that Mitt Romney carried. But running the table in those states is a very tall task, party strategists freely acknowledge, so theyÂ’re working to expand the map of competitive races to states like Iowa, Michigan, Colorado and several others.

Franken only got 42% of the vote in a three-way split last time, and only won was credited as winning after a contested recount, barely beating being claimed to have beaten Norm Coleman.

Norm Coleman has taken a pass on running this year.

In case you didn't see this reported: Scott Brown seems to be considering running for Senate again... in neighboring state New Hampshire, rather than current home Massachusetts. He's sold his Massachusetts home and is spending time in the Granite State.

I don't know-- that seems to me to be No Big Deal, because, come on, the differences between two neighboring seem small enough that New Hampshirites* wouldn't think, "My God, we can't elect this man; he doesn't understand our culture."

But then, people are very state-proud, especially political people.

* This is probably wrong. But here's the thing: I don't care.

152 Bringing up a state's vote for Obama as indicative of how conservative they are is not accurate.

The vote's for obama were inspired by white guilt and a desire to immunize themselves from further racial fingerpointing. (so it didn't work so what?)

178 Former NH resident and proud of it. That said, politically it is an enigma wrapped in a conundrum inside a won ton wrapper. They've gone for Pat Buchanan, Henry Cabot Lodge and Paul Tsongas. On a state level, they do well at maintaining a small government, pro-freedom stance. They are a part-time legislature and were ranked no. 3 in worst state legislatures by Mother Jones, so they are definitely doing something right. But lately they've been loving them some Democrat solons; 2 straight Dem guvs, 2 Dem Reps, Dem Jeanne Shaheen beat out John Sununu Jr. Previous commenters are right; lots of Massholes moving north of the border and are affecting elections in the state. The ironic thing is that Massholes left Mass for a variety of reasons, but then seem hell-bent on converting NH to Mass-lite. Bugs the piss out of me.

189 "160 I often wonder why Republicans do not challenge the cheating that Democrats like Frankin do. They just let them skate." Because the GOP is run by reach across--I mean around the aisle cocktail party assholes that just want to get along with Democrats and not fight back. They'd rather be slandered, roll over and play dead, and continue to go to dinner parties together than live up to or fight against the libel against them. If the other guy says you a mean son of a bitch, sometimes its best to show that little rat bastard just HOW MEAN OF A SON OF A BITCH you can be OR at least refute it. The roll over a play dead as a sign of bi-partisanship is a media scam and the GOP needs to learn the media will never be their friends no matter how many times they play the good little dog. This is in part, why Ted Cruz is teh awesome.

The truly astonishingly stupid and offensive Barbara Boxer polled way below normal re-elect numbers in CA in 2010, too. As did Harry Reid. Think there were a few others that cycle. Result: bupkis. Easy re-election. Easy.

Some of the very reliable stand-by rules of thumb from not that long ago just don't seem to work any more. If they did, Bambi would have been crushed and probably won fewer than 30 states, instead of being the first incumbent to be re-elected with fewer states and fewer voters than the first time. Approval/disapproval and partisan self-ID from a year ago still make the catastrophe of re-election pretty much inexplicable (if any of the old patterns and logic still prevail).

Senate races tend to be very individual affairs with their own dynamics depending on the state and the personalities, that is they are rarely "nationalized". But even 2010 couldn't nationalize MO and IN - which along with the uniform success of very unpopular incumbents in CA, NV and several other D-held states, really makes me wonder about reading the so-called electorate.  If MO and IN, of all places, can't vote sensibly and strategically when the nation's fate literally hangs in the balance, then there is no bottom here.

Yeah, um, Scott Brown has no business running in New Hampshire. I know we all joke about how liberal the Northeast, or in particular New England is, but New Hampshire is the one state that is competitive enough to be considered "swing". Bush won it in 2000 and almost won it in 2004. Ayotte ( who is Ted Cruz in comparison to Scott Brown) won 60% of the vote.

I really wish John E. Sununu ( the son not the father) was running in a rematch against Shaheen, he was one of only three Senators ( I believe the other two were DeMint and Coburn) who got a perfect score from club for growth in 05. He'd be a solid addition in the Senate. He's also capable of winning. Guinta is probably too conservative for NH but he would be a better candidate then Scott Brown.
Don't get me wrong I like Scott, he's probably the most conservative Republican in MA who's won a Federal election. He's arguably more Conservative then Mittens was. BUT compared to any Republican outside of MA he's a Liberal Democrat ( and yes that includes the Maine Sisters)

Also Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire are far more "culturally self-aware" then the lower half of New England. They'd view carpetbagging negatively. But The NRSC seems to already have anointed Brown. The strategists over there are pumping him up.

Sorry but nobody really likes Norman. He has the distinguished honor of losing to BOTH Jesse Ventura ( in 98') and Franken ( in 08')

206 114 This would be a taylor-made election for T-Paw to wipe the floor with Franken but obviously, he prefers the lobbyist lifestyle now.. Posted by: Tony253 at December 02, 2013 06:56 PM (3yMFT) I thought the same thing, but who would turn down an easy senate seat? They're worth a million on the street. Maybe TPaw took a pass because with his name recognition Franken could clown on him. But fuck it, have fun with it. I know he's liking Aspen and shit, but I'd like to see him run.

207 "But lately they've been loving them some Democrat solons; 2 straight Dem guvs, 2 Dem Reps, Dem Jeanne Shaheen beat out John Sununu Jr. Previous commenters are right; lots of Massholes moving north of the border and are affecting elections in the state." That's why I think Brown could do well there. Everyone in the country knows who he is, but they know him well since their news comes from the Boston market.

209 They kept counting and recounting, and counting, and adding bags of votes discovered in the trunks of people's cars, until Miracle of Miracles one of the recounts showed Franken in the lead. Then they were done.

Granite Staters is probably better.

New Hampshire is dead.  Has been since the Old Man fell off the Mountain in shame.

Long live Meldrim Thompson!

211 I lived in NH, just north of MA.  There is a huge difference in mentality between 0% income tax in NH and whatever Gawd-Awful tax rate monster exists in MA.
