— Ace Benediction.
Benedict XVI's helicopter is circling over St. Peter's Square before heading to Castel Gandolfo, where he will make his final appearance as pope. Spectators around the helipad are hanging out signs that read, "Thank you."
The Anchoress has some thoughts on the departure of the Pope.

Then goes back in through the side door. From what I read this morning, he'll get better treatment then the last Pope to retire 600 years ago.
The new Pope threw the old Pope in jail until he died. Yikes!

I go back and forth on the resignation. Truth be told, only time will tell whether this is a good thing or not. It depends on who follows, it depends on the precedence that may or may not be set. It depends on whether we might start seeing forced resignations. At this point in my life, I prefer to focus on the positives with the hope that we will get a great pope who can be a guidnig light for Catholics, the West, and the world. All those groups need it.

I think the next Pope needs to have a serious "Come to Jesus"* conclave with every Catholic institution all over the world. It's time to lay down the law, so to speak, and remind them of their faith and its teachings. I for one would love for a conservative Pope to lay into Pfleger with a castigation so sharp it actually makes him bleed from the eyes.

I think this decision was made because of accute problem not with Benedict but with the Church. That he sees a big problem he will not be able to tackle in the very near future. The Church just can't afford to wait for him to die to get a capable man at the wheel.
Conversely he may be having issues with dementia, and wishes to step down before he no longer has the presence of mind to judiciously use the chair of Peter. Imagine the havoc wrought on the church if a pope with dementia started invoking infallibility as a contemplative man would not.

I'm curious though, clicking through the Anchoress's links to the Jesuit Corner one, the author notes that B16 mentioned Dorthy Day in one of his final speeches.
I can think of no one as progressive as that woman. (Frankly I don't like the legacy she left which is a group completely devoid of the "Catholic" part of their movement and interested only in the Marxist part.)

Yeah, I know. I was just thinking about one of the characters on "The League" whose grandfather, played by Robert Wagner, was put into a nursing home because they thought he had Alzheimers. In reality, he was pretending to have Alzheimers so that he could bed the female residents then act like he was confused that the woman wasn't his wife. In my mind he was walking the hallways grabbing women's asses and "forgetting" that he was Pope.
It was funny in my head.

It was sort of like "Chicago's out? Chicago's out?"
I am convinced the Holy Spirit prompted his election. I am also certain that his decision to retire was prompted by his sincere concern for the Church. He was witness to how people went their own way (sometimes with disastrous results) when Pope John Paul II was so gravely ill the last couple of years of his life.
His greatest gift was teaching, and I enjoyed listening to his audiences and discussion of things. Watching his leaving just now it is obvious how frail he is, and perhaps he hasn't much time left.
I pray for him and am grateful we had him in Peter's Chair.

It's not likely, given that JPII and Benedict appointed almost all of the voting cardinals. Still, please remember whoever is elected won't always line up with American conservatism on every issue, especially economics.
An African Pope is possible--and will happen soon, given how the Church is growing by leaps and bounds in Africa--but not likely this time around. If I had to pick, an Italian is very likely--they're going through withdrawal with two non-Italians in a row. If not an Italian, probably Ouellet, the Canadian.

Secondly, he is not going off to Miami to wear Bermuda shorts and eat the early bird special at the Cuban sandwich shop. He is withdrawing from the world, to live a life of seclusion and prayer. He made a sacrifice by accepting the papacy, because he wanted to retire to Bavaria, a place he will never see again.

"Tired" and unable to accomplish the job are two different things I think.

SH the last time this happened, it was considered disgraceful. I don't like the precedent this sets of the papacy being viewed like any other job that you just retire from when you're tired. I love the man, but it feels like he is abandoning the Church
----
L'lle - I certainly understand the sentiment. But as MtM says, there could be things we are unaware of - such as dementia - that he knows will get worse.
As for me, I've decided not to worry about the precedent, and to see this as Good. And even if this starts a precedent, that may or may not be such a bad thing in today's modern reality. I hope it doesn't, but just too many unknowns. I hope for the best.

I don't expect him to come down on my side outside of the realms of morality. The church has not had a great philosopher since Aquinas. So I'll just take theology consistent with moral living. If he can help cover that it allows us to work on freedom.

But there's been some rumbling that he wants to finish his final volume of the theological tome he was working on before being elected pope, and given his health he'd likely to be unable to accomplish that while being pope (because he is goign downhill that fast.)
I think he always saw himself as a teacher and wanted to give this last lesson and feels he'll be failing if he doesn't.

The fastest growing church in my area is made up of former members of the Episcopal Church. They splintered off about 13 years ago and have just built their 3rd sanctuary in the last 5 years because they can't seat everyone for their services. The church is part of the Anglican Church of Rwanda, not the Episcopal Church of the US (not sure organization name) that is the official rep of the Anglican Church. Why? The AC of R is conservative, the Episcopal church in the US, not at all.
I will have to say, I went to a funeral a few days ago at an Episcopal church in town, and the Associate Minister was a cute little minx walking around in a pair of stompy boots. So they have that going for them.

14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
15 That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.
16 I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

He's the Pope. Resignation is not unprecedented, although rare. If he thinks it for the best, I am not going to second-guess him.
Even up to the time of Paul VI, popes were not expected to travel. Pope Benedict cannot do that, on doctor's orders, given to him last year. So one very important part of the modern Petrine ministry (such as going to World Youth Day) is closed to him.
Secondly, the Church is under attack. It is under attack in all parts of the world, including the United States. Although Benedict is willing, his frail body doesn't give him the strength to be a warrior pope.
Third, I imagine that the time of his retirement will be very short. I share alexthechick's thought that he is not long for this world.
Finally, I trust Christ to look out for the Church. For heaven's sake, there was the Avignon Captivity, murdered popes, evil popes etc. The Church endured. This is NOT as bad as any of that stuff.

Me, too. Not because I think he senses the end is near, but just because, without the mantel of Pope resting on his shoulders and pushing him along, his body may simply slow down and come to a stop. If so, I would trust it was God's way of saying, "You've done a lion's duty. Now it's time to come home."

If watching the Pope degenerate into death, as it has many times in its history, was the best thing for the Church, then I think Benedict would have stayed. He was my Pope, if he says this is the right thing to do with the Papacy, then barring a prophetic vision from God himself, who am I to say he is in error? I must accept that not all elements of this choice are known to me, right now, and some of them may never be known to me. I must trust that God is and will care for his Church.

It's fascinating to see how interested and opinionated about the papacy non-Catholics are. And of course, my favorite part is the commentaries by reporters who are obviously anti-Christian as well as anti-Catholic.

When, I am put under the lash of the tongue for my Church, for its misdeeds now centuries old, for it's beliefs about the morality of human sexuality, for its keeping of separate rolls for women and men, I remember, are persecution is nothing like* what the first Christians had to endure.

Benedict will assume the title of Pope Emeritus.
He will only be at Castel Gandolfo for a few months, until his living quarters within the Vatican are prepared. He will be living in a small monastery there on the grounds, on the other side of the gardens from St. Peter's.
He will not appear in public again.
He is devoting the rest of his life to prayer and meditation. And perhaps, finishing that theological book, although that hasn't been said.
He will swear loyalty and obedience to whoever is elected the new pope.

You can let the Holy Spirit fill your heart with hope. That the unprecedented nature is God's will and God's hand upon the heart of our Pope Emeritus. And that now in our darkest hours, sitting on the cusp of a second dark age, we will be given a point of light to sit on the Chair of Peter and lead faith throughout the world.

Well said. Actual martyrdom happens daily in places like Africa and Asia. We're just experiencing hostility. Growing hostility, yes. But it's not martyrdom.

"It is my impression from the changes he has made in restoring the older forms ofthe liturgy and also from reading his catechesis in recent years that it is the latter."
Yep. If you read the documents of Vatican II (which The Deuce also helped to write-- and he is the one who set the retranslation in motion) they in no way condone shit like liturgical dancing, no longer kneeling for Communion, horrible art, tabernacles shoved off to the side, and so on and so on and so on. Liberals grabbed hold of the power vacuum and performed their usual cram-down.
