The Pope is Bergoglio of Buenos Aires
— Ace

Here's some background on him.

PopeFrancis.png

He's a Jesuit. Or was a Jesuit. I don't know if you're a Jesuit forever or you stop being a Jesuit when you move up in the hierarchy.

Sullivan's reacts here, a bit more restrained than I was expecting.

"Francis:" He's chosen his papal name, "Francis." I asked @fredosso who picks that and he says the pope himself.

So he's a Stripes fan. That's a good sign.

No but really Francis Xavier was the first Jesuit to be pope. Thanks to @drewmtips.

Gateway Pundit says the actual name is "Franciscum." I don't know which is correct, or if Franciscum is formal and "Francis" is informal.

Oops: Francis Xavier was the first Jesuit (co-founder, so it's a tie), not the "first Jesuit pope" as I said. Francis I (Bergoglio) is the first Jesuit pope.

Thanks to @tsrblke.

Jesuits are the "marines" of the Catholic church.

They're on the front lines of education, outreach/missionary work, and they've also historically been spearheading reforms withing the Church.

Yes, there are a lot of them who are devoted to education and are going to be absorbed with all the negative things associated with modern education, but they're mostly the ones actually out there in the "real world" getting things done.

Posted by: looking closely at March 13, 2013 11:24 AM (PwGfd)

The Boston Globe's Greg A. Bedard reports free agent Wes Welker is "very likely" to sign with the Broncos.

The report comes via a league source. It's either the biggest move of free agency, or one of the most daring leverage plays in recent memory. If it goes down, it would certainly flip the balance of power from the Patriots to the Broncos at the (tip) top of the AFC. For all the talk of Welker being a "system player," there's no way the Pats could adequately replace him for 2013, even if they signed Welker's mini-me Danny Amendola. That is not to suggest the Pats would suddenly drop from the top tier of the conference they've dominated for over a decade.

208 "Modern" Jesuits hardest hit.

Pope Francis was an "old-school" Jesuit. That would be not in the tradition of Georgetown or the countless other Jesuit colleges that now seem to demean, belittle and distance themselves from their conservative Jesuits traditions- in the name of appealing to a more diverse groups of attendees who don't seem to be Catholic at all. But pay tuition.

By the way, is it just me or wasn't the appeal and bona fides based on a true Jesuit tradition. That would be minus the "oh, well our faith? Pfft, we are all one big, happy agnostic family here", which modern Jesuits seem to prefer.

Trust me, I took the tours at several allegedly "Jesuit" colleges with a family member. There script included a very long dissertation on how they were Jesuit in tradition, but not really Catholic or religious at all. I was like- huh? Sophism and equivocation is not the philosophy you want to start your post secondary education with. Goodbye.

FWIW, Clarence Thomas is a product of Jesuit-influenced schools.  The Jesuits no longer run the parochial schools in Georgia, but they were EXTREMELY instrumental in establishing Catholic education in the Deep South (or in Georgia at the very least).  That influence is still quite pervasive today.  A lot of the parish churches in the South were also established by the Jesuits as well.

St. Francis Xavier was not only the first Jesuit Missionary but his mission was in India, China, places others would not think to go. Xavier was canonized by Paul V. Assisi was canonized by Gregory IX. Both these men were missionaries.

285 My first impression was he must be liberal because he is a Jesuit - I went to 8 years of Jesuit schoolling (HS, College) and I can give pleanty of anecdotal evidence to back up the "Jesuits are liberal" mindset.  Jesuits are certainly "more tolerant" (aka liberal) in the US.  This Jesuit from Argentina was appointed cardinal by John Paul II and my second impression is there is no way a liberal Jesuit gets appointed Cardinal so I theorize he was appointed by John Paul II to effect change in the Jesuit liberal leanings.  One saying in my neighborhood was "Go to public school lose your morals, go to Jesuit lose your faith"  but my Catholic faith is stronger than ever so do not agree with this saying, but I throw it out there to show the mindset in the US at the Catholic parochial school level about a Jesuit higher education.  That being said, I cannot imagine the teachings of 2000 years and the works since 1978 buy JP II and Benedict the 16th will be reversed.  I however will have to wait and see and pray.

that there is funny, especially since this pope will need tocontinue to heal the church from the sex abuse scandals of the past

310 Yes they are saying this on fb, he's the first Pope from the new world.

311 It seems, with most Christian religions embracing change (woman priests, gay marriage, heck, even contraception/abortion,) the only real change would be not to follow this direction.  If the Catholic church follows the path of the other Christian Protestant churches, not only do the hardcore Catholics who go to church every Sunday rethink this commitment but I also guarantee the liberal non-church going brethren do not take our place in the pews every week either.  I may be wrong, I'm wrong alot..

315 Fantastic that they chose a South American Jesuit! This guarantees that the new pope will be both more socialist and socially liberal than the average BHO cabinet member. Apparently there is a movement in the ranks of the Cardinals to drive every traditional Catholic to either: Coptic Christian, Greek Orthodox, or perhaps ANY Christian church that isn't named "Catholic". I thought that I had seen it all when the last Pope released the paper last fall telling me that I didn't have a right to defend myself and that I should implicitly trust my government to protect & defend my family. I guess it's time to learn Greek so I can understand the mass at St Olav's.

318 You wouldn't want a Canadian pope. The politically correct stuff is pretty universal there. But he'd know what -40 degrees means. He might even know Mark Steyn.

319 I don't know which is correct, or if Franciscum is formal and "Francis" is informal.

A little Latin lesson for Ace and Gateway Pundit: Franciscum is the accusative case (direct object)  of the Latin name Franciscus. Franciscus is simply the Latin form of the English name Francis. The new pope's name appears in the accusative form Franciscum in the Vatican announcement because it is the direct object of the past tense of the verb imponere, which means (in this case) "assign" or "give."

I see a few other posters have noted this issue but a little extra pedantry never hurts, particularly on a smart military blog.

320 I understand these are the man's words, regarding things Argentina, a historical dictatorship with ties to fascist Italy and Germany, once did-- "We come to pray for all who have fallen, sons of the Homeland who went out to defend their mother, the Homeland, and to reclaim what is theirs, that is of the Homeland, and it was usurped . . ." Let's grant--for sake of argument only--that Britain did something dastardly wrong in 1833--I don't think the facts support that, but let's say so. Then this jackass needs to understand that people in one time don't pay for sins of another, and that we in the world need to be done with territorial conquest. You don't right wrongs (or in this case, imagined wrongs) from one era by committing wrongs in this present one. If Britain did anything wrong, then if there is a heaven then them that done it receieved theirs a long time ago. As will any who did anything untoward during Argentina's troubled times. But, you know....*If*we are going to put no time limit on crimes of the past....then why might I not wish to arm indigenous Americans to go after Jesuits, should the desire exist? The "Black Legend", and all, you know.

321 I'd also like to know--since the new Pontiff cares about usurping so much--exactly what he is going to tell his parishoners who cannot stop flowing illegally into my country? Especially as I understand he starts addresses off in Spanish. Anything? Anything at all? Or am I expected to start speaking that as well, at the same time as I give citizenship to the usurper, just as Falkanders must abandon all they know for a country with an unfirm grasp on the concept of rule by law? Hack. They elected a hack.

"Especially as I understand he starts addresses off in Spanish"

Since he was the Cardinal of Buenos Aires until just a few hours ago, uh, yeah, I expect he usually started addresses off in Spanish. Should he have spoken English to them?

You're a numbskull. Perhaps you should try learning to write English.

324 "ITEM #1. Argentine Official congratulates Cardinal for AIDS Mass BUENOS AIRES, Apr. 17, 01 (CWNews.com) - The Argentine Minister of Health, Hector Lombardo, described decision by Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires to spend the Holy Thursday at an AIDS hospital as "a significant signal." Cardinal Bergoglio arrived on Holy Thursday at the Francisco Muniz Hospital for Infectious Diseases where he washed and kissed the feet of 12 AIDS patient. The Mass was attended by patients, nurses, doctors, volunteers, and relatives. "I come, following the footprints of our only Master, Our Lord Jesus Christ, to express the Church's closeness to those who must suffer pain and discrimination," the cardinal said. "Cardinal Bergoglio's will to express in such an eloquent way his solidarity with AIDS victims is a courageous decision and a significant signal that brings hope to those who work in the attention of AIDS victims," said Lombardo. After the Mass, Cardinal Bergoglio and the hospital chaplain, Father Andres Tello Cornejo, brought the Eucharist to patients unable to attend the ceremony. Since he was appointed Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, Bergoglio has changed the tradition of celebrating the Mass of the Lord's Supper in the cathedral. He visited this same hospital three years ago; last year, he visited the prison facility of Villa Devoto; and in 1999 he visited the Saint Joseph Refuge for the Homeless in Buenos Aires." http://tinyurl.com/cejd8ar " And the King will answer, "In truth I tell you, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me." http://tinyurl.com/d3xhgca

Posted by: Donna V. at March 13, 2013 08:51 PM (7FqJH) Everything I'm reading about him and the gay community is positive. I think those who are gay will have the ear of this Pope. He was a chemist. He understands science. All the Jesuits I know are brilliant in some way. He seems most comfortable with those on the fringes of our societies. Who knows he might have some unique perspectives on things which are doctrinal which we've come to almost take for granted. He might be able to explain them in a way for people to understand them better. It's funny, the gays I know for the most part aren't pro gay marriage and they continue to go to the Catholic church. They are sort of just quietly living their lives like everyone else and their sexuality is just a small part of the whole.

329 "101 I look forward to the Pontiff excommunicating his fellow Argentinians when they next attack the Falklands, in violation of just war theory."

From the things I have read about him and Kirchner, he might just do it.  There is no love lost between them, and as an advocate of Social Justice - in the original sense, not the US Proglodyte sense (O God, I am heartily sorry...) - he is most likely opposed to war in general and aggressive war in particular.  He might just excommunicate Kirchner if she tries anything.

330 I haven't gone through the comments yet, so I apologize if this is a repeat, but he's probably named after St. Francis of Assisi and not St. Francis Xavier. Also, the Pope is the head of the Jesuits (who are directly under him and not a local diocese), so technically every Pope since the founding of the order has been one.

Posted by: Michael at March 13, 2013 09:46 PM (dHgMz)

331 Yes, the Vatican came out and confirmed that it was St. Francis of Assisi. Guess they got tired of hearing all the media ruminations. Clue number 2, he sneaked out of the Vatican, sans security to go pray at the Bassillica of Santa Maria Maggiore, so he's already a handful and the youth will love him for it.

332 He is the Cardinal Protector of St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Rome, served by Jesuits. So that position is now vacant. He also served in the Curia (per wiki) "Member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments Member of the Congregation for the Clergy Member of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life Member of the Pontifical Council for the Family Member of the Commission for Latin America"
