2 Republicans call IRS targeting conservatives a chilling form of intimidation. I say call for an impeachment. This was one of the accusations against Nixon that he used the IRS to target McGovern and others.  Why is it OK for a Democrat to do it and an offense if a Republican does it?

He came off pretty well in that exchange.   But the real story on FNS yesterday was Kucinich being part of the panel and not feeling obliged to carry donk water on either Benghazi or the IRS horseshit.  For all of his major flaws, Kucinich is very media savvy and understands that donks trying to play politics on the deaths of 4 heroes is a big fucking mistake when the facts finally come out.  Plus he was against intervening in Libya so he gets to point out that he was right.  But his biggest surprise was when he remarked on all the phrases like "constitution" and "bill of rights" that were flagged by the IRS for groups and that even though he's a lib donk and has nothing to do with the Tea Party, it was a national scandal for them to be targeted.  Repubs should pay attention to him instead of fat fuck Rove when it comes to framing the story.

I disagree.

The best we can do with Obama (pbuh) is to neuter him. keep him from doing much more damage.

But with Hillary, we can destroy her reputation, and tar her permanently with the stain of Benghazi.

That will keep her out of the running in 2016.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at May 13, 2013 03:48 AM (O6Tmi)

47 My friends, you don't have to worry about Barack Obama in the White House another four years or more. We must reach across the aisle at times like this and stamp out the extremists in this country. A call for impeachment is ridiculous when what is needed is a call for unity and more IRS agents.

58 Well, the Methodists came along too late for the Thirty Years War, so they're not exactly first-tier playas, but Lutherans and Methodists met in what was then called the Great War, or the War of The Nations, and nobody thought that was a joke.

Wanna hear something really scary? There were Catholics on...both sides!
Jews and Muslims, too. A good conspiracy thinker could make something of that. "Elders of Wesley," indeed.

Posted by: comatus at May 13, 2013 03:54 AM (JNUY4)

59 #35  Mr.Pink,  I think that "targeting Jews" thing was why they came out with the apology to the Tea Party.  Their supporters are already defending it as "doing their job" and "completely understandable, got carried away."

It's  impossible for them to defend persecution of Jewish groups.  It raises the memories of pre-war Germany and invites unpleasant comparisons.  Plus it also would call into question the numbers of Muslim Brotherhood members and fans within the  administration.

Therefore,  I would like more investigation of this aspect.

Good morning,  all!

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at May 13, 2013 03:55 AM (+98Gb)

64 I have to laugh when I realize that if Obama had an R in front of his name the IRS scandal would be on the front page of half the newspapers in the country as the narrative driving the entire MFM would be how he lies, abuses power, and covers up deaths and targets opponents for destruction. All of this while claiming the right to drop bombs on American citizens without a trial. The anti war marches would still be going on, with the president being blasted for his useless red lines and saber rattling with north Korea and Syria. His violation of the war powers act by bombing Libya for 100 days before he asked congress for a vote would be used to proactively gut him against future conflicts. The fact that our labor force participation rate is the lowest since the fucking 60's while the stock market was over 15 thousand would be used to say how his policies of crony capitalism favored his rich donors while destroying the middle class. The fact he appoints donors to commerce and other positions would be cited in almost every article on high unemployment. His fucking approval number would be 30%.

"And even if you somehow managed to get rid of Obama, you would still get Biden."

Don't kid yourself - the reason we aren't seeing a worldwide depression right now is because of the Reaganesque tax agreement that Bitch McConnell was able to negotiate in a backroom deal with O'Biden.

O'Biden might be a shrill plagiarizing jackass of a papist nitwit [dull even by papal standards], but he doesn't hate this country with the seething nihilistic rage that O'Bammy does.

Our economy is sputtering along right now because of that deal.

90 #61  Obama is always shielded from consequences.  Ruls #1 of the Obama years.

I think it likely that the orders came from OFA, who probably knows which of its members were IRS employees. (I cannot imagine that they don't know that,  with all of their fancy data bases.)

So, it wouldn't be hard for someone in OFA to get the word out to the IRS folks to hinder the Tea Party applications through excessive questioning (always hoping they could find something illegal in all of the emails they were demanding).  Remember also that Mitt Romney's donations to a pro-marriage (or anti-gay as the Obama people called it) group were leaked to the Obama campaign by someone in the IRS.  Also remember Harry Reid's comments about Romney not paying taxes,  which he never explained or provided proof for.)

I will bet cash money this can be traced back to OFA in Chicago.  And of course,  it is illegal.  We will probably not get Obama on this one but OFA,  which he is STILL collecting money throrugh,  can be crippled.  OFA is how he intends to run things after he is officially out of office,  whether or not he decides to get Michelle to run.

103 The old vice-presidential system, where the guy who came in second became the VP, may have a few points in its favor. We have no chance at all of coming up with an amendment to cover the eventuality of an election being stolen by fraud, miscount, or massive misrepresentations by a party, to the extent that all the top positions in the presidential succession are occupied by the offending group.

Hayes-Tilden and Nixon-Ford were, in their way, skin-of-the-teeth affairs; we probably have TFG because of Bush-Gore, and Jackson's followers were so enraged by JQ Adams that the spoils system, the first century of the Dem Party, and the "late unpleasantness" may have all been offshoots of the solution. But none of them directly addressed what we are facing now.

We do not have a constitutional means to deal with the crisis of a runaway party or the need for an electoral do-over. And if we did, it would be invoked constantly.

136 #109  Bishops in each diocese are responsible for the discipline of Catholics who cause a public scandal.   Biden SHOULD be denied communion.  I do not know if this has happened.

The one good thing I can say about Ted Kennedy was that when Pope Benedict visited the United States,  although he attended the mass he did NOT present himself for communion,  unlike Nancy Pelosi who apparently considers herself a doctrinal expert.

The Church is currently undergoing low-level persecution,  in case you all haven't noticed,  with the gay marriage efforts and the attempted forced compliance with Obamacare.  Bishops must balance making public controversies with politicians with the good of their people as a whole.  In case people have forgotten,  there has long been the accusation from some quarters that the Church tries to run American politics from Rome.  I have no doubt Obama would stir up that idea again.

Think of it as due process.  The Church takes due process to the absolutel ridiculous extreme because the goal is to get the offender to repent - not to kick him to the curb.  So the Church holds its hand out - way too much in my opinion though.

Despite the fact that this is from Wikipedia, it's still right in line with my Canon Law training.  (Oddly, the exact question about an abortion-supporting politician presenting himself for Communion was on my final).

"It can be more difficult to determine whether in a particular case all four elements referred to are simultaneously [emphasis added] present:

- a sin,
- which is grave,
- which is manifest,
- and which is obstinately persevered in.

The action must be a sin in the eyes of the Church, not merely something distasteful or irritating; personal guilt on the part of the person concerned is not required.

The sinful action must be 'seriously disruptive of ecclesiastical or moral order'".

All of those conditions have very specific ecclesiastical meanings.  And that's the problem, they frequently skate on what amounts to an ecclesiastical technicality every time.

If IRS and Labor Dept went after people, what other Depts went after people in a discriminatory manner? Is it possible there were more? There are so many Depts with onerous regs, this could be so much more widespread than Congress knows. Was HHS or Medicare or EPA or DOJ used against people? What about that guitar case? Wasn't that political?

My HR Dept Manager received an obnoxious letter from the DoL demanding payroll information broken out by ethnic group and sex. They wanted us to report weekly for the next year. When I found her responding to the DoL requests, I shut it down. I then got several phone calls from the DoL insisting that I do this for 'a study'. I told them we won't be 'participating' and they could not force us to report.

155 Appearing on Fox News this Sunday, Pat Smith, mother of murdered State Department employee Sean Smith, wished former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a happy Mother’s Day. “I want to wish Hillary a happy Mother’s Day,” she said. “She’s got her child. I would also collate the permit denials with the employee doing the denial and the OFA membership list.

Morning, Morons.   Sorry IÂ’m late.  Here are a couple of stories about the great Boris Karloff:

He enjoyed doing horror films, but he never pretended that they were anything other than what they were.  “My wife,” he once said, “is a woman of great taste.  She has seen very, very few of my pictures.”

By the end of his life, Karloff was forced to wear a metal brace on one leg.  “I canÂ’t breathe and I canÂ’t walk,” heÂ’d joke about his declining health.  “Must be the result of carrying too many bodies upstairs!”

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

168 Even MSNBC Is Outraged Over IRS Targeting Conservatives: “This Is Outrageous, No Matter What Political Party You Are”… It’s that bad. Via Washington Times: It’s little surprise to see Republicans bashing the Obama administration over reports that the Internal Revenue Service targeted conservative groups during the 2012 election season. But even the president’s most vocal supporters — the talking heads of liberal cable news channel MSNBC — are unloading on the White House and the Democratic Party as a whole. “Look at the reaction of the entire Democratic Party. Of course the Republican Party is jumping on this … beating up the IRS is always good politics. But why aren’t more Democrats jumping on this?” asked MSNBC host and White House correspondent Chuck Todd. “This is outrageous, no matter what political party you are.” Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw also skewered the administration’s response to the scandal, which broke Friday afternoon. “There’s only spin for the president to make, which is to come out and say that ‘this is outrageous. I have asked the people responsible for this to be removed from their jobs.’” Mr. Brokaw said on “Morning Joe” on Monday morning. Mr. Obama has yet to directly address the matter, though he’s expected to do so Monday. Well let's not get carried away yet. I mean we have not heard from the all knowing and Professor of the English language Al Sharpy Sharpton yet

176 #148  I also know about Interdiction and knew about it before I became a Catholic.  Apparently a lot of people know about it.

My theory on why this is that there was a famous Interdict against England due to evil King John refusing to recognize the Pope's appointment for the Archbishop of Canterbury.   This interdiction was actually covered in a couple of episodes of Robin Hood starring Richard Greene,  back in the 1950's.  I distinctly remember seeing that as a kid,  because they made a big deal of shutting the church doors and ringing bells and such.

Anyway,  because of the TV series many Protestants also know about interdiction.  I find that fascinating.

Because you personally don't see it means it's not happening?

How many Catholic blogs you read every day?  Ever write letters to your Bishop?  Or talk to him personally about it?  I mean, I know you're not Catholic, but you care about the issue, right?  So you must be engaged on it.

Quick, no Googling, who's  the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine?

I volunteer at the Diocesan Tribunal here one day a month.  I talk to these priests and lay staff.  They get a constant drumbeat of dissent about the issue.

But it's sort of a Catholic "thing" to keep it in the family.

"They're our brothers and sisters in arms in the fight to get this nation back so just fucking zip all the stupid shit."

Actually, they aren't.

Importing all the Catholics in the late 19th / early 20th Century, for their cheap manual labor, was what tipped this country electorally away from the classical principles of the Founders and into the Socialism which the Frankfurt School was pushing.

Over the years, the WASPs have been the only group which has shown any consistent adherence to the founding principles.

For whatever reason, by and large, the Catholics just don't "get it".

If they have to choose between the guaranteed flow of shekels versus actually doing something proactive about all of God's children being murdered in the wombs of their mothers, then the Vatican will choose the guaranteed flow of shekels, every time.

It's just their nature - they can't seem to help it.

216 Even MSNBC Is Outraged Over IRS Targeting Conservatives: “This Is Outrageous, No Matter What Political Party You Are”…

Posted by: Nevergiveup at May 13, 2013 08:37 AM (9Bj8R)

I'm starting to wonder if this isn't one of two things.  First, it's gaining traction, so the media has to pretend to get in front of it.  There's an old quote attributed to former Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian, "Leadership is, when an angry mob is chasing you down the street, making it appear that you are leading a parade."  Once they are in front of it, they can control the narrative.  They can start out as being outraged, then slowly dial it back.

Second, it gives them the moral high ground then to hammer on Republicans when the next "thing" comes up.

Posted by: Zombie John Gotti at May 13, 2013 04:52 AM (Gkhxf)

217 #185  Well,  we can send letters to the appropriate Bishop.  There are observant and traditional Catholic groups who speak out, although you won't see their opinions covered in the press.

The Church is not a democracy.   Also,  Bishops are pretty much in charge of their own dioceses and rarely come into the view of Rome unless something is particularly egregious.

There are over 1.4 billion Catholics in the world.  The Vatican has 800 residents and 2400 workers who live in Rome.  That is 3200 people doing EVERYTHING, including museum curators, Swiss Guards, janitors, priests in the Curia,  priests in the Magesterium, Vatican choir, everyone.

So although Biden looks like a big deal here,  he's a little dot when Pope Francis has to look at Catholics being massacred in Egypt,  China driving the Church underground,  etc.

Perhaps this can help explain why there doesn't seem to be more noise.

Posted by: Miss Marple at May 13, 2013 04:52 AM (GoIUi)

218 Because you personally don't see it means it's not happening? How many Catholic blogs you read every day? Ever write letters to your Bishop? Or talk to him personally about it? I mean, I know you're not Catholic, but you care about the issue, right? So you must be engaged on it. Quick, no Googling, who's the Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine? I volunteer at the Diocesan Tribunal here one day a month. I talk to these priests and lay staff. They get a constant drumbeat of dissent about the issue. But it's sort of a Catholic "thing" to keep it in the family. Posted by: Sean Bannion at May 13, 2013 08:48 AM (sbV1u) That's my point Bannion, I'm not Catholic, I don't have a relationship with the Catholic church. As someone who is outside looking in, all I see is lip service. There's not even an appearance that going against the church in this manner has any consequences. I think that's a bad thing. Don't you?

270 America showed up and rescued John McCain when the enemy had him trapped. Guess he forgot about that.

McCain's problem is that he has never forgotten that. He loves this country so much that he is incapable of seeing those who hate it for what they are. It is simply inconceivable to him that anyone could hate the country and all that it stands for. Once you realize that about him - everything he says and does falls into place. He thinks everyone in government loves this country as much as he does. He truly believes that we had and have nothing to fear from an Obama presidency.

285 #267  Are you unfamiliar with the Church's stand that excommunication is by default for certain offenses?

As Bannion has said,  the diocese under which the Kennedy family lives (and there are several) are responsible for the situation.  Do YOU know if Kennedy even goes to mass?  Of course not.  So you do not know if he has been attending mass or receiving communion.  Do you know what parish he is in?  No.

Why don't you stop this attack?  It's not like it's accomplishing anything,  and I am pretty sure you don't want me to start in on the faults of my Protestant former pastors or public scandals about Protestants.

Thank you.

The guy was a stud, and may have the single best one-liner in the history of the world.

He attacked and captured Sindh, a province in Pakistan. He sent a cable to London to announce his victory. It was a single word..."Peccavi."

It means, "I have sinned," in Latin.

[It's probably not true, but I will always prefer to believe the story, because it's just perfect.]

Best one-liner?  I have always held another in that slot.

Philip of Macedon decided he was going to invade and conquer Sparta during the Third Sacred War.  He sent a messenger to the Spartans warning them:

"You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army on your land, I will destroy your farms, kill your people and raze your city."

The Spartans replied:  "If."

315 #290  We have altar girls in my parish.  I imagine there will be atrophy of this practice when Monsignor retires, depending on who the next priest is.

We do produce a lot of priests from our parish,  and have 1 being ordained next month and 10 in seminary.   Monsignor also brought a group of Franciscan sisters from India to live in the old convent building,  to establish a visible presence of religious within the parish.  They have been a very good contribution and we do have more girls starting to consider a religious life.

Our priest attended seminary in Rome and actually knew Cardinal Ratzinger.  He's not a liberal priest at all,  but the altar girls sort of got handed down to him and it's a tricky thing to get rid of them,  since many are from the most devout and active families within the parish.

Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at May 13, 2013 08:52 AM (GEICT)

On the other side of things, the church has to be concerned that going out and doing the open "Excommunication!" thing is going to have a boomerang effect.

Look, the church is not well loved by the secular left, so painting a target on it's back in order to do something that doesn't really help anyway accomplishes...what?

Silly Joe will still go up to mass, he'll still present for communion and all you've done is put your parish priest into a media firestorm he didn't want to be in. (Unless Smoking Joe only goes to the bishop's parish I guess.)

And frankly, (no offense to Bannion here whose got more cannon law chops, looking at this from an entirely different perspective) we've got bigger subtler problems that excommunicating Shotgun Joe won't fix.

We've got to squelch other organizations that actually have a semblance of influence over people who are drifting (to put it mildly) away.  I was at my usual meeting of a certain group that may have gone out over the edge in supporting Obama Care and is still unconcerned about the birth control thing.  The Bishop that came said "Listen, y'all may not care, but I've got to deal with parents who think it's a good idea to give their teenagers birth control!"  And rather than take the story as what it was (a caution against the sliding standards of the new morality of secularism) some dipshit actually stood up and told the bishop he "didn't understand" and those poor girls probably "were going on birth control to help them perform better in school."

So yeah.

Sheriff Joe? Tiny problem.

General Sir Charles James Napier

I may be    wrong,   but I always thought the Napier quote was in regards to the Indian tradition of    sati,    in which a    widow is burned to death on her husband's funeral pyre.

"This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs."

It's such an awesome quote, though, that I could very   easily be mistaken.  It's   genesis     may have been misattributed at some point in the last,    what?   Nearly 200 years?      Talk about    playing Telephone!

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based mosque posted an English translation of Saudi cleric Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajid’s 1997 work, “The Muslim Home: 40 Recommendations in Light of the Quran and Sunnah,” which the mosque headlined, “40 Recommendations for the Muslim Home.” “Hinting at punishment is an effective means of discipline, so the reason for hanging up a whip or stick in the house was explained in another report, where the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘Hang up the whip where the members of the household can see it, for this is more effective in disciplining them,’” the article states. 347 i haven't seen a paten since the 80's in any Catholic Church i've attended....since they allowed people to grab communion out of the extraordinaire minister's hand and pop it in their own mouth...those things became passe..........

Posted by: phoenixgirl at May 13, 2013 09:29 AM (GVxQo)

with all these stories I read I'm so very thankful for the church I attend. It's very traditional and Mass is still the pre-Vatican 2 Tridentine Mass.

348 There's a way to fix that you know.

One step at a time.

Wait did I stumble into one of those "let's roll back VII!" things?

Because...erg...I may be crazy, but I'm not THAT crazy.  I happen to be OK with a few of the changes.

350 So, we now live in a place where the IRS targets political opponents After the Secretary of the Treasury cheats on his taxes, the FBI removes Islamic counterterrorism investigative priorities from its manuals before an Islamic terror attack, and one of the principal authors of Obamacare announces his retirement before the implementation of his signature legislation because it's a train wreck in his words. No, really. Thanks, low information hipster dumbasses.

No.  Not at all.

But do you know the point of the paten?

Oh but lifeteen.

Lifeteen MUST BE DESTROYED.

I hate that shit with every fiber of my being.  It's ass backwards anyway.  Most of my friends who were involved in it ended up bolting from the church. (So clearly it's not working) and those that didn't are still attached to it even in their 30s.

353 #348  We had a study of Vatican II during Lent,  for one thing to let people see what was NOT in Vatican II (destruction of altar rails, removal of staues, women priests, etc. etc.).

What I am against are the things done in the "spirit" of Vatican Ii which had nothing to do with it and which contributed to vast numbers of people being confused about the Faith.

355 what kinda phone? I'm very near to closing my Comcast account and going all-things-on-the-smartphone route HTC One. The difference between my old iphone 3g and it are staggering. Huge screen, great resolution, and the learning curve isn't too steep if you are fairly good with technology. It's hard to believe I'm holding a phone with more computer power than a laptop I had just a few years ago.

356 Thanks, low information hipster dumbasses. Who now have better odds of employment in Mexico then in the USA. Except Mexican employers probably wouldn't want to hire them either. Actually, serious you guys, Mexico's youth unemployment rate is lower then in this country. We should be pressing Mexico for 'amnesty' to take these good-for-nothing, vote-themselves-the-whole-candy-dish, good-for-nothings off our hands.

Vatican II opened the door for all of the Church lefties to run wild. Funny how let's update the Church crowd is updating it right out of existence

359 Jews do not recognize the divinity of Christ. Protestants do not recognize the divinity of Mary. And Baptists do not recognize each other at the ABC store.

If you're talking about the one used during the distribution of communion if memory serves it's to prevents the crumbs of the body from falling upon the ground (sacrilege!)

Of course we've made great strides in really really stiff hosts in recent years.  (OK that's snark, but I personally don't really like someone getting that close to my personal space.)

I'm personally not actually opposed to the whole handing the body to the recipient.  It does seem to me that (especially in light of the reassertion of the importance of the laity after VII) that the faithful should be able to hold their savior in their hands before taking to their mouth.  This I think is a good thing.

I don't.  Your mileage obviously varies.

There was a theological point to the reception on the tongue that is now missing when you hand it to someone.

That's funny because Catholics don't recognize the divinity of Mary either.

Fair point.

But there were theological points when the alter faced forward that are gone now too.  There are tradeoffs across the board, weight them and make the proper decisions as needed.

But lines do need to be drawn.  Just because the alter has been turned around doesn't mean people get to circle around it during mass, sorry Lifeteen nuts, that's just wrong. (And creepy.)

(Yes, a thousand burning suns.  That's how much I don't like it.)

372 But his biggest surprise was when he remarked on all the phrases like "constitution" and "bill of rights" that were flagged by the IRS for groups and that even though he's a lib donk and has nothing to do with the Tea Party, it was a national scandal for them to be targeted. Repubs should pay attention to him instead of fat fuck Rove when it comes to framing the story.
