Progressives' "Brosurance" Ads Are An Embarrassment
— Ace

And, it seems to me, an insult to Millennials.

I'm not a Millennial and I can't know their minds, but personally, I'd take it as an insult that Obama's Minions believe this is the way to "relate" to me.

brosurance1.jpg

Other ads similarly depict "Bros" as moronic idlers.

Oh, but there's a Brosurance ad for the ladies, too. This one portrays young women as daffy idiots having fantasy relationships with Movie Stars.

I don't know if he's right about these being taxpayer-funded ads -- but I don't know he's wrong, either. The left is claiming otherwise. They don't exactly have a lot of credibility with me. But I will note their objection to the claim, until I can get an unbiased take on it.

Oh, and these geniuses aren't done yet. It's not just that they conceive as Millennial women as choosing their politics and their health-care according to which Movie Stars they're in Fantasy Relationships with. They also seem to believe that young women are infantile and incompetent enough to need the help of government in securing $8 birth control pills from Wal*Mart.

Do Millennials really see themselves this way? My God, I hope not.

You know, I bust on Millennials a lot. So that is Enemy Action.

But I think these ads are worse. When I insult Millennials, I mean to insult them. I'm trying to blame and shame them for their vapid grasp of policy (and reality).

Again, that's an Enemy Action. And the insult, while insulting, is less hurtful, precisely because one knows it comes from an enemy's mouth.

But here are people trying to appeal to Millennials. They present themselves as "friends." They "get" you, Man.

And here is what they think appeals to you -- pictures of young people in Party Hardy poses and daffy young stupid things who think Ryan Gosling is like sooo dreamy and my God where would I get birth control pills if Obama didn't draw me a map?

Really?

If this actually is appealing to Millennials -- and they find this to be non-demeaning -- then every insult I've shot their way is true.

14 You know, I sit at the edge of the millennial period. (Being in my late 20s) and frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if this works. In my experience, millennials often lack an understanding of economics, or frankly reality. If you're targeting 18-24 year olds, you might be able to do make this work. Often this group seems to only be concerned with the "now" and no sense of the future. Although it's strange, everyone in that age group would be able to stay on their parent's insurance, so I'm not sure why they'd be targeted. By 27, you're likely to at least be considering a future, and this stuff starts to grate (every time I have to walk back up the undergrad campus I think "good god, these kids get stupider every year.)

It follows from Rawls and Daniel's crap (Paging AtC, paging AtC, please pick up the courtesy rant phone.) Of course I'm in Washington DC and bros and the related dumb women could use a bit of thinning. It's not surprising in that these archetypes are all over this city. But it's also unspoken.

I think those ads might appeal to a small subset of Millenials - that is, the currently in college, drunken frat boy party types.  Rough estimate is maybe 50% of college kids would find those ads "cool", but not cool enough to actually buy insurance.

150 The biggest problem with the Millennials is their social networks.  If their network "knows" something to be true, then, no fact to the contrary is of even minor interest to them.  They are the least curious bunch that I have ever known.  I distinctly remember being a "know it all" at that age, but, I also remember being possessed of a vast amount of curiosity and just because a bunch of idiots my age "knew" something--did not mean that I instantly believed in whatever that something was or was not.  But, then, I was always an anomaly in many ways, I was Conservative from the git-go, mainly because of the bedrock beliefs that my parents gave me.  Strangely enough, as FDR/WWII Democrats until the day they died, they always found my being a Republican to be strange.  We had many fruitless conversations where I tried to point out that their Democratic party had been hijacked by scoundrels and libertines that were not worth spitting upon.

216 The problem with the birth control nonsense is because a few idiot conservatives played the "moral" card why we shouldn't have "free" birth control, Democrats play this shit almost to taunt us.

So they set the trap, someone calls women that want birth control sluts or someone like Cuccinelli or Santorum try to actually make legislation that bans certain forms of it and call it a form of abortion, and then the Right ends up insulting even married, Evangelical Christians that use birth control.

I'm telling you, the birth control issue was settled in the 60's and the fiscal part of the equation of "free" birth control is probably last on my list of things I want "fixed", especially considering I like the idea of most of the parasites in society not breeding.

217 Ok, time for some reality. This post is way off base. Whether it's the Rs or the Ds in office, you can't blame government for inane advertising. Why? Because the government doesn't do advertising any more than it builds roads or bridges. Like most things, the government hires the PRIVATE SECTOR to get stuff done. In this case, it was more likely a big-name advertising agency that came up with the ad concept, the creatives to support the concept and the overall campaign. Oh, and as at least one of your commenters noted: these ads DO reach the intended audience. They work. You're being misleading. I know, you do it to fan the flames of your readers. But jeez. At least put the blame where it rests: which the creative agency. Not the government.

One of them bent over in front of me to attend to her precious and her sweater rode up and I saw it.  It was frickin' huge!  Then she must have sensed me behind her because she stood back up and pulled the back of her sweater down and tried to hide it.  She just smiled and got embarrassed.

I think these ads are really pre-campaign ads for 2016.  The "bro" ads are window dressing.  The important ones are the ones about birth control.  They just want to remind young women that "Republicans want to take away your birth control."  We're gonna see that meme again and again until the GOP figures out how to combat  it.

253 Also meanwhile on the jobs front, or the lack of jobs front, I heard from a liberal acquaintance here in Commiefornia that one of her oldest friends lost his job.

"Jim" is a nice guy. Pleasant. Hardworking. No particular specialized credentials to his name. Has spent his life since age 14 doing the kind of invisible basic jobs that are everywhere in a healthy economy, that don't require connections or credentials, just a willingness to show up five days a week and slog.

But jobs like the ones Jim has always done are jobs which are now disappearing here in CA thanks to Obamanomics and also to Commiefornia's own additional toxic stew of antibusiness regulation.

I thought to myself, man, Jim is boned.

My liberal interlocutor? Full of confidence! She said, "Oh, it will be fine. He can go get a new job in the _green energy_ sector. That's _the future_. They're going to need _lots of people_."

I bit my tongue instead of blurting out "What, green jobs at places like Solyndra? I drove past that empty building just the other day. I didn't realize they were back in business."

The reality is that the magic green jobs are a mirage, and as I said, Jim and others like him are boned.

But even more boned are Generation Special Snowflake, because (a) the classic basic Jim level jobs started to vanish even before they got a shot at them, and (b) many of them have loaded up hugely on undischargeable student debt in bullshit identity-politics degrees that don't qualify them in reality for anything better paying than the now vanished Jim jobs. I doubt a lot of them will ever really find meaningful work at all.

Consider Cruz, in the aftermath of the shutdown, declaring the episode a success and exclaiming that the American people have risen up against Obamacare. He was utterly unencumbered by the polls, which do not register a popular revolt against the Affordable Care Act. (Exit polls in Virginia and New Jersey showed voters evenly split on Obamacare.) End quote. = Alright. Now compare the 2013 recent exit polls in VA and NJ (evenly split on ACA) to the former exit polls following the 2008 and the 2012 presidential elections on the favorability of socialized federal health insurance as a mandated law. I'm willing to bet that in VA and NJ, today's "even split" favorability towards ACA poll are LOWER percentages than previous popular opinion expressed in former electoral exit polls on the ACA topic in both VA and NJ. +And what's this with the convicted perjurer Bill Liar Clinton (Drudge link) saying that income earners from 130%-400% of the US poverty level will see their ACA insurance prices fall. Early voting - that's the real problem.  These people along with the urban welfare groups can be collected over the course of a few days, and transported in for their vote.

On "Election Day" - it's just too hard to get them to reliably show up, and there is no way to get the numbers needed to win elections in just one day.

=======================

You're missing the joke, because you're not very bright. The Dems are only going to be as respectful as they have to be - that is, they only have to be better than the GOP/Conservative side. This is still better than you lot. At the very least, they're not castigating us for having the temerity to want - gasp! - a living wage. This is basically a well deserved middle finger to the right.

As I've said before: if you look at what both sides (and, by extension, both parties) are actually going to *do*, there's no real difference. No one's bringing the jobs back. No one is going to fight immigration and massive demographic shifts - in fact, both sides are glorying in them - and yes, yes I *AM* saying that ridding America of its historic white majority is both stupid and immoral. Race matters. No one is going to fight corporatism. The only difference is that the Dems aren't going to actively insult the young whites they're displacing, and they openly support the very welfare state their policies are making necessary. We take what we can get.

You're part and parcel of Establishment Conservatism. You don't have the stones to go for the jugular on things like race, immigration or corporatism but oooh, aren't you so brave on bashing earnest young white people for not supporting an ideology just because it does nothing - or less than nothing - to defend their interests. May god have mercy on you in your old age, because we won't.

357 But you do have to consider that there were enough of these idiots out there to vote for Dear Leader twice and get him elected both times. ** They are a product of the world that was created for them. They cry out for attention, with their tattoos and piercings and free-love. Why? Because their parents were too busy working or partying to pay attention to them. They find themselves in deeper and deeper debt, both personally and as future taxpayers. Why? Because they were raised in a quick-money world where credit is cheap and owning the latest, greatest gadgets is key to identifying "success". They have been brought up in a world where they never experienced consequences for their actions. They were taught that everyone is a special snowflake and that they should love themselves unconditionally. They were told to change for no one. They were turned loose without supervision for hours if not days on end. They raised each other when their parents failed to do the job. They live now in a country where they can't find a job and are forced to live with their parents well into adulthood. They crave love and acceptance as has every generation before them. And then we wonder why the first person who espouses Hope! and Change! appeals to them.

366 At the very least, they're not castigating us for having the temerity to want - gasp! - a living wage. This is basically a well deserved middle finger to the right. Define "living wage". To me, it sounds like it should be "the bare minimum amount of money required to stay alive". If that's the case, there are a lot of unemployed people making no wage and they don't seem to be dying. I'm happy about that by the way. But it comes back to my question: What's a "living wage"? Two young people making minimum wage aren't even close to the razor's edge. So my thought is that we already have a "living wage".

Yeah, done in one. I think you nailed it.

Where I grew up, my parents had a name for kids like that. Pet children. Mommy had a kid, just one, handed it off to a nanny ASAP, and then went back to her career in NYC. Daddy probably didn't even show up for the delivery. The kid got pulled out of the trunk anytime it was convenient for the parent (Christmas cards and assorted other photo ops) but otherwise were ignored. I was gonna put an end date on the getting ignored part, but actually, there really isn't one. Most still don't have a relationship with their children.

Much later, my mother told me this about one of my classmates in 1st grade. The little girl's mother once told my mom that "HE (her husband) made me have it." It being the cute 6 year old girl, who happened to have a name.

Yeah, some of us millennials are fucked up, but look no further than their self-centered parents for the reason why.

So long as you're a liberal Marxist, the Dems won't actively insult you if you're young and white and into playing Alinsky yourself. Lizzie, a living wage is nothing to sneer at since everyone who works full time should be able to survive according to their income scale. But the faulty crux? To involve politicians, themselves absolutely corrupt thieves of public funds, or to involve designated government bureaucrats to dictate numbers according to policy and promises. Asking politicians to make life "fair" is like whistling Dixie these days. Government interventions inevitably screw up the economy and peoples lives, hurting those at the bottom the worst as those above fall down. "A living wage" or even "minimum wage" are political grandstanding terms used to abuse the very people politicians promise to INTEND helping, while forcing inflation and while funneling public funds through their own sticky fingers and deep pockets. As a rule, politicians help themselves, and self righteously claim such their god given right. "Promise them anything; just get their votes."

The ads are bad, no doubt about it. But it's the general attitude of staying silent on everything that's been thrown at my generation, then bitching at us for being insufficiently conservative. That's galling. Again, us young whites will vote conservative/Republican as soon as that particular side defends our interests.

Also, it's beyond irritating to see Establishment Conservative sides snarling at how slutty "we" are, while remaining silent (at best) on the fact that Affordable Family Formation is going to hell. How exactly are we going to raise families out of poverty and within marriage when it comes to outsourcing, immigration, corporatism, etc? Start making it easier for us to marry young, raise families and y'know, work and live in areas where we actually want to live (when I hear conservatives breezily telling me to go live in the sticks, I hear people who can't be bothered to defend my interests and who have essentialy ceded the cities) and pushing family values might actually be something other than an irritant.

I realize, however, that tutting at our alleged exploits is considerably easier and generally doesn't draw the wrath of the business lobby and the ethnic hustlers.

I wonder what "interests" to which you refer that applies exclusively to millennials?

I also kind of recoil at a thought process where people openly talk about selling their vote based on whatever candidate will defend *their*  "interests."

Conservatism is about universal truths, not faction-based politics.  We recognize that low taxes, low government, etc, benefits EVERYONE, not just Group A or Group B.  That you are complaining about conservatives not bending over backwards to defend one particular group's "interests" is to misunderstand the very essence of conservatism.

No. Anyone who is willing to work hard full time. Not just punch a clock. Should get a wage reasonable to live on. Furthermore, my definition of "full time" is not the union definition. It's Biblical. 12 hours a day, 6 days a week (includes commute, you deserve 12 hours home a day). If you are working that long and you are working hard you deserve a wage you can live on. If you are working less hours a week instead of 72, and don't like your QOL. You can use the remaining hours as investment in yourself to improve your earnings potential. So you can live a semi good QOL on the work week you like.

435 I expect that the only people who will still be able to pay for their health care without going bankrupt to appease the federal authoritarians will be the very well to do. People used to say of Michelle Obama's Chicago Hospital executive job that she did nothing, just collected $300K+ paychecks. Likely close to reality, with one glaring distinction. She saw to it that the poor (those without insurance) could no longer gain access to hospitalization. They were directed to clinics without hospital treatment facilities, to die of complications. I heard Dannion Brinkley of the private Twilight Brigade for terminal veterans' hospice explain that in Obama's VA system, the funding is being redirected from doctors to social workers, leaving the ill veterans on 8+ month waiting lists for an eye appointment while going blind. It would be foolish to fall for the Alinsky play book, targeting one age group over another, enriching the evil frauds selling "insurance" policies for Americans to rot in the ACA whitened sepulcher.

437 413 317. "The only difference is that the Dems aren't going to actively insult the young whites they're displacing," -- Posted by Lizzie

So long as you're GAY, the Dems won't actively insult you if you're young and white.

"Promise them anything; just get their votes." =========================     Look, I agree with you that the free market, when it actually operates, is good. Where I cringe with horror is when conservatives forget that we're not dealing with a free market - we're dealing with Big Business and Big Govt (as well as smaller players like Big Labor, Big Agriculture, Big Military) in bed with each other. And conservatives spend so much time bashing Big Govt that they far too often act like businesses are innocents.       We have busineses using regulations and contacts to kneecap their small and medium competitors. We have cronyism. What we don't have is an actual free market. Corporatism allows the players to avoid that. And all I'm hearing from Establishment Conservative types is bashing the welfare state and the people who use it. Which would be reasonable, if it was combined with equal vitriol aimed at Big Business, immigration, offshoring etc. Both sides have to be shown in their true light. The wefare state simply perpetuates corporatism by paying te losers to not riot. In that, it's deeply immoral. But to target that at the expense of the businesses the GOP currently seems to be blowing really is just targetng the weak.       So get a free market, within one country with secure borders, and that would eliminate much of the need for welfare. (Why do you think Big Busines is so keen on offshoring and immigration if it didn't mean a massive reduction in the wages it had to pay?) But if y'all keep complaining about welfare and entitlements while doing nothing (at best) to target why people need them, and voters (esecially the young) will perfectly rationally just not vote for you.

=================================

Marriage costs in the West mean a nice house, with a decent school system and employment patterns that mean that families can be supported without back breaking toil and loooong hours. *That's* Affordable Family Formation.

Look at the employment prospects, especially for those on the left (and even the center) of the bell curve. Look at the fact that the nicest areas have been (1) taken over by non whites, (2) rich people (not just leftists) have used environment, heritage and planning laws to make them basically unaffordable and (3) the American population has more than doubled ince 1950. That'll drive prices up.

Schools are going to hell, for demographic reasons. (There's a reason no sane person would send their kids to DC's public schools.) That means moving (may by choice, but wouldn't it be nice to have real alternatives?) to houses with - *cough* - "good" schools, and the demand drives those prices sky high. Or private schooling. Or home schooling. All of which diminishes Affordable Family Formation.

I keep hearing conservatives breezily telling me that we're just spoilt. We should move to the sticks, home school, make everything ourselves and basically work our fingers to the bone. All that basically means is that you've given up on retaking the cities and the public schools. You won't fight the demographic changes. You've given up on improving living standards. You, in short, are going to stay silent on everything affecting us, but by gawd you reserve the right to berate us on our sluttily slutty sluttiness. Whhhhyyyyy oh whhhhyyyyy won't we listen to you, just because you refuse to defend our interests? We must be evil, and stooopid, or something.

448 440 Lizzy. Again with the you v. me -- don't go there. You're new here. Or you'd know you're preaching to the choir with me. Global corporatism owns governments and politicians, including our own, ESPECIALLY the two major US political parties. Rand Paul did the public a favor when specifying that conservatives at this point must provide an adjective for definition. There is an entire world of difference between the constitutional conservatives, a la Goldwater conservative aka libertarian Republicans, and the far right neoconservatives. And yes, I say far right intentionally, because despite his personable charms, the Bush administrations (The Patriot Act et al.) indeed have proven the downfall of what vestiges remained of our Constitutional Republic. The global corporatists own the Republican neoconservative leadership lock, stock and barrel with nation building abroad, never ending wars that require our military to suicidal Rules of Engagement, "compassionate" conservatism killing people with drones, destroying the working American lives and jobs at home. The destruction of Western Civilization's so-called "Middle Class" is the end result of socialist authoritarianism brought forth by Woodrow Wilson, "post-constitutional" brain farts that permeate both major parties in the US, having monopolized Europe since WWI Armistice.

If I showed up at a party like that, those present would naturally assume there was some kind of family emergency and I was there looking for my son or daughter. That's what happens when one looks like the middle-age father type right out of central casting.

It's strange (or not so strange), but at this stage in my life I look at pretty young women like I look at purple-gold sunsets or flowers or morning dew beading on a spiderweb, as objects of natural beauty, nothing sexual at all. Maybe it's because I have a daughter that age, I don't know. Grown women, on the other hand, do for me: women with women's bodies and women's minds and strong, fully formed personalities. I can't relate to those guys my age who try to reclaim their youth by going after pretty young things. You can't go back. Only a fool would want to.

Most Catholics don't go to mass either. Coincedentally there is an extremely high crossover between Catholics who don't attend mass regularly and Catholics who reject Humanae Vitae. Make no mistake though. Catholic social teachings have morphed in modern times to "Social Justice". I'm on a personal crusade (To the extent I can be) discrediting progressive "Social Justice" as a viable political science theory to reach a "More just society" in line with Catholic social teachings. This is the real kicker though. I'm under no obligation to agree with the Church's views on political science, but those that reject Humanae Vitae are under obligation to consider it Authoritive with religious submission of intellect and will. Funny huh?

454 " Or are they liberals first and then Catholics later? " That's almost like asking if NYC Jews are liberals first and then Jewish later. I'd imagine that socialist Catholics see liberalism as their "Gospel". "Social Justice" lost its way, another catch phrase that sounds decent, which is why it was coined for propaganda. There is no greater justice than for all to be equal under the law. "Blind Justice" -- so playing favorites is unjust. Which is not to say that social injustice does not exist. The current Pope recently addressed slavery. The "most Catholic" former Monarchies of Spain and Portugal certainly made fortunes through and piracy of natives' natural resources, slavery and the pernicious slave trade that persisted openly through Colonialism through WWI. "Because I Could" is merely ye auld "Might Makes Right" sentiment.

As someone who is more-or-less in the Millenial bracket (having been born in '83), I don't think these ads will genuinely appeal to Millenials on a gut level. It is painfully obvious that the people who are actually making these ads are a generation or two removed from their audience, and are both parochial and myopic enough to believe that this will appeal to that cohort.

In short, this is a prime example of Your Uncool Dad trying to impress your friends by trying to pretend to act like them, when it's obvious to everyone except Your Uncool Dad that he is embarrassing himself.

This seems to be an endemic problem with political ads, though. A few years back, in 2008, there were Obama ads aimed at black communities that were obviously written by 60-year-old white men; they tried to be hip and cool, and instead ended up making a 70s-esque parody that managed to insult their audience.

On the other hand, these ads don't really need to appeal to Millenials. That cohort is strongly Democratic on a deep, almost spiritual level, and they will tend to support anything and everything that has a (D) after its name, solely because it has a (D) after its name. You may argue the specific details, but the specific details are irrelevant. They will laugh at these ads, they may even be insulted by these ads, and then they will turn around and agitate for more of the same because they literally cannot conceive of a universe in which an alternative exists. Progressive victory is identical to eschatology.

My only grim consolation is that as my generation suffers the terrible consequences of its dissolute behavior over the next several decades, I'll get to watch everyone who asked for it get it good and hard.

473 RE:219 Ok, time for some reality. This post is way off base. Whether it's the Rs or the Ds in office, you can't blame government for inane advertising. Why? Because the government doesn't do advertising any more than it builds roads or bridges.

Actually, "Susie" , the  anxious skank in the ad with the half shaven wonder, works in the office of the president of the Denver City Council.  Can't you imagine the request for time off?

474 Already partly covered by others, but the most striking aspect of these ads to me is that they are all white people. Healthcare.gov has/had very few white women models and NO white men. Is this a sign of Democrat desperation?

Who do you think created these ads? The kind of Millennials Ace insults, that's who. Remember that youth turnout in 2008? Exactly. "Of course these ads will appeal. Doesn't everyone think the way I do?"

John Wayne: "Life is hard. It's harder if you're stupid."

That truism has a way of coming home to every generation. Millennials won't be an exception. Neither will white people.

478 I really thought these ads had to be fake  - that they were making fun of Obamacare, and presenting a conservatives caricature of what would appeal to new "customers".

No girl ever ever ever made that face for a pack of pills, let alone a fella when she is actually taking them.
