— Ace Thank goodness.
This whole play makes sense in only one scenario: That Marco Rubio is our candidate for President in 2016 and we need to give this to him to make him viable.
I'm not there yet. I'm not thinking like that. So I don't see the reason for it.
Quoting from National Review's editorial:
[B]roader reform measures must wait until credible enforcement mechanisms are in place. Those mechanisms include, at a minimum, a physically secured border and mandatory universal use of the E-Verify system, which confirms the legal status of new hires. We agree with Senator Rubio’s view that “we can’t be the only nation in the world that does not enforce its immigration laws. . . . Modernization of the legal immigration system is impossible unless we first secure the border and implement an E-Verify system.” We very much doubt that Senator Rubio will achieve meaningful border security in cooperation with Senators Schumer, Durbin, Menendez, and Bennet. The less-of-the-same version being developed in the House with the support of John Boehner and Paul Ryan almost certainly will suffer from similar defects, since it appears to be based on the same premises…Senator Rubio, an exemplary conservative leader, is correct that our immigration system is broken. And he is correct that, at some point, we are going to have to do something about the millions of illegals already here. But he is wrong about how to go about repairing our immigration system, and wrong to think that an amnesty-and-enforcement bill at this time will end up being anything other than the unbuttered side of a half-a-loaf deal. And there is no reason to make a bad deal for fear of losing a Latino vote Republicans never had.
Marco Rubio has the right take as far as process: He's actually trying to persuade conservatives rather than delivering unto them an ex cathedra declaration cooked up between John McCain and Lindsey Graham.
And that's nice. No, really.
But the substance is still unacceptable.

I don't require a politician to agree with me 100% of the time.
What I would like to see is the response he is getting on this issue to cause him to rethink his position, and necessitate holding off on any "solutions" until after the current occupant of the White House is gone.
If he could do that, I could see myself supporting him in '16.

Yes, but likely not because he has a "soft spot" for illegal immigrants. My guess is that Rubio really wants to run in 2016, sees the Latino vote as crucial, and believes that if any Republican can get the Latino vote at all, it's him.

A path to citizenship already exists. Maybe it's not fast enough or can't currently be implemented to the extent that Rubio envisions. But it's already here.
As the daughter of legal immigrants, I object to the way this debate is being characterized as either "pro-immigrant" or "anti-immigrant". No one is against legal immigration. Please don't lump all of us in the same group, and that includes you, Senator Rubio.

I've got no problem with immigration reform, but it has to be done in a way that doesn't penalize those already legally waiting in line, and doesn't encourage more illegal immigration.
Unfortunately, nobody seems to be able to come up with a package that actually accomplishes these really simple things.

Enough of the "in fairness" crap. It's about time to look for a candidate that is solid on the basics and never mind the demographic shit. That way, we might be able to pick up a few of the pieces when Choom Boy topples.

Look, before everyone gets the long knives out for Rubio, it might be a good idea to sit back for a few days until all the nuances of the positions are understood.
You're not going to believe it, but I've seen reasonably intellegent conservatives turn on people just because they misunderstood certain aspects of their leaving a job early. Hard to imagine, but once certain people get something in their heads, it's hard to explain the facts to them.
So let's put the charcoal and lighter fluid away for now. There's always time to burn him at the stake later. If we keep going with these knee-jerk witch burnings, we're going to run out of candidates.

Where's the Border Security bill?
That needed to be introduced yesterday. Even if we block amnesty now, but don't control the border, we lose. The clock is ticking. Dems know it. As long as they keep the border open, it's a mater of time before they get whatever they want. We have a closing window of time to stop the stream of illegals. Act with a sense of urgency, conservatives, like your future depends on it. Because it does.
Rubio: “we can’t be the only nation in the world that does not enforce its immigration laws. . . . Modernization of the legal immigration system is impossible unless we first secure the border and implement an E-Verify system.”
Do it. Two bills. Border security first. Dealing with existing illegals second.

If I'm an average hispanic person watching the Republican debates, hell yes I would probably think republicans were racist. Why? Because the media casts it to unflattering terms for us and then on top of that you had canidates trying to out right Perry on an issue (this one) and be as hard assed as possible. On top of that, you have Obamanos telling you republicans are racist and from our end silencio.

I frankly believe it is a great move. It makes our position clearly known- even if Rubio walks away. He can say I was there with The Grinch (AKA Schumer) on a bipartisan basis and President Skeets kicked the dog.
If Rubio didn't do this it maintains the false narrative. Advantage Rubio.

I'm sorry, but anyone who takes potshots at Rubio and his plan really needs to propose an alternative. Anf if "nothing" is your alternative, explain why it is Conservative to allow 11 million people to stay in the USA, depress wages, give a giant subsidy to big business in the form of those depressed wages, not pay taxes, and many of them with criminal records that won't pass a background check.
I get it that you don't trust Democrats on this issue. But we have to start somewhere to lay down some markers for a reform package we WILL support. You can't just say "Fuck You Rubio You Damn Dirty RINO" without explaining how we keep from getting our heads bashed in over this in the next 50 election cycles.
And it is naive in the extreme to think a Republican minoriy in the Senate can get a bill that only includes border control and enforcement, and sometime down the road come back and do something about the people who are already here. That simply will not fly, especially as long as Barack Obama is in the White House.

I don't have the time, nor am I close enough to all the facts and figures, to lay out the perfect immigration plan. In a representative republic, I depend on the people we choose to do it right. Rubio has my proxy to handle this situation.

I see your point in re pathetic quisling GOP politicians, but President Obama isn't going to be your typical lame duck president. For one thing, President Obama is the first black president and controls--and will continue to control--97% of the black voting bloc for as long as he's alive, which means he will still command an immense amount of political power even after he's left office. Neutralizing President Obama in the last two years of his term means either the Republicans hold the House and take the Senate in 2014 or a Democratic Senator would be willing to cross both the President and every Dem-leaning black voter in his state. Good luck with that.

For starters, we get those guys off the damn stage and start showcasing younger and more diverse people like Rubio, Cruz, Martinez, Tim Scott, Kelly Ayotte, etc.
The great thing about this Rubio Moment is that the only Republican in the news right now is Marco Rubio. He is the Big Story here, even to the MFM. That is a net plus for the GOP regardless of how the policy turns out. The sooner we get focusing on the next generation of Republicans, the better.
You can tell how skeered the MFM is of Rubio by reading Dana Milbank's column today in the WaPo. The MFM is now actively concern-trolling the Right trying to gin up hate for him.

#208 What does that mean anymore? Enforce the laws we have? Does that mean deporting 11 million people? Employing a massive ICE force to raid businesses and inspect the papers of all their workers to make sure they are legal? What do you do with the anchor babies? If you remove 2 million people from California's workforce, do you seriously think unemployed white people with families in North and South Carolina are going to magically appear to fill those jobs? So what happens to those businesses? "I don't care" really isn't a good answer.
I'm not trying to be a dick here, I am really trying to find out what conservatives think a real, practical solution is to this problem if it isn't along the lines of what Rubio has worked out here.
Posted by: rockmom at January 30, 2013 12:41 PM (aBlZ1)
Polls that Rubio has access to show that self-identifying Hispanics consider immigration-related stuff no more important than anybody else does, and it's not their "single issue." General expansion of state power is. They're for it, all of it.
So "reform" doesn't specifically appeal to Hispanics, but in theory it could work as a backdoor appeal to voters to whom seeming not racist is very important. But that theory is wrong and dumb. Those people are unpersuadable.
Rubio's personal interest in the issue is either because he's a truly dedicated establishment tool, a fucking idiot, or deeply personally invested in alienating "the base," because fuck those crackaz. There's evidence for all those things.

It would help if our conservative politicians would simply do conservative things from the get go. But the next best thing is to show that you can at least learn from them. Rick Perry made mistakes with Gardasail and the Trans Texas Corridor. But he was smart enough to run from them when they provoked a conservative backlash. THis is what Milton Friedman had in mind when he said you don't need new politicians, just make it economical for a politician to vote your way.
Rubio may have learned a big lesson here. And wouldn't you rather have him do it now rather than when he is President (if he ever is).

Go after Rubio on policy, sure. Go after Rand Paul too while you're at it. Since they (and Ryan) are the presumptive frontrunners, they need to be looked over and vetted beforehand. But calling Rubio 'the GOP's Obama'? Where the hell did that come from?
Posted by: troyriser at January 30, 2013 01:02 PM (vtiE6)
Why? Why is it that we must Do Something for illegals? To add millions more Dem voters?
More specifically, in what way is Rubio's proposal a solution? Sure, millions of illegals "come out of the shadows", but what then? Millions more take their place?
As has been suggested, start with mandatory E-Verify (or it's equivalent) to weed out those with a fake or duplicate SSN. Would it be a burden? Maybe a little, but very little considering that they're already required to check and keep record of their employees documents.
If a gun dealer can make a call to perform a background check for every gun he sells, an employer can do the same upon hiring.
As to the farmers who can't find legal workers to pick their fields, that can easily be dealt with using work permits- the mechanism is already in place, if need of improvement. If there was better border security and employment enforcement, there'd be little opposition.
We can discuss a "pathway to citizenship" after- and only after- serious border security and employment verification / enforcement actions are given time to take effect.

'Under-accomplished'? By what measure? Rubio was elected Senator of Florida. Maybe you're not aware, but Florida happens to be home state to lots of people whose surnames end in vowels, so there was no tokenism going on when he attained that office. Rubio has risen to the top; rather, has achieved prominence in part because of his rhetorical skills, in part because he's a capable legislator, and in part because he's an unabashed conservative on most issues. Rubio has also been willing to take an unpopular position and make his case to the base, which takes a certain amount of political courage--a quality of character in short supply among GOP politicians these days.
You don't have a clue.

No matter what Democrats do in the coming years in power with the White House would be dwarfed a thousand times over by legalizing 20 million illegal aliens. It really is game over at that point, I'd rather have more Solyndras and ethanol subsidies than a Permanent Parasite Majority.
The rationale for Rubio being our nominee is simple. He's Latino, and many minorities vote on skin color. I hate to play this game, but we live in a stupid country.
If Rubio were politically savvy, he'd be a border hawk. he'd have the GOP nomination wrapped up in a bow and midwestern industrial states would swoon in a general election. How popular do you really think Amnesty is in states like Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, etc?

And what's usually between those two is smelly, steamy shit, as in a shit sandwich.

Faction building means more "punish our enemies" speeches for Enlightened Lightbearers, Champions of Tolerance.
By the way, let's start calling them out on Political Bigotry. Don't they discriminate by creed on a daily basis?
