Reminder: Planetary Triangle Tonight
— CAC

Just a reminder on a slow weekend: look up after sunset. West/northwest, to be exact:

h/t to cob rdbrewer for the Space.com link.

I tried to find that eclipse scene from Fifth Element, but, alas, some things just aren't on youtube. Anyways, clear skies to you tonight!

1 I'm lazy, sorry, but how high up in the sky am I going to have to look? Have to figure out whether I can stand in the yard or go out to the main road.

4 If you can see a bright "star" 25 minutes after the sun sets in the West, you've got enough clearance. It should start to appear at least two handswidths from the horizon. That star is Venus, and Jupiter+Mercury will then apear above it, forming the triangle. No need for dark skies either. All three planets will be bright enough to see from even a city center.

10 Indycar had a nice real-time animated display showing each car's position on the track. Nascar has an app for that but it's like $50-$70. Per season. It's actually really nice. Great way to get a quick overview of the race and where your drivers are. Not worth the money. But nice.

35 #32 Bino's will definitely ENHANCE the experience, but no. All three will be visible to the naked eye. Their closeness to each other makes it especially easy to find them. This will be the CLOSEST grouping of worlds until 2026.

36 Let's see, Mercury is a burning cinder, too close to the Sun to ever sustain life. Jupiter is a frigid 'gas giant' too far from the Sun to ever sustain life. Venus has horrific temperature and atmospheric pressure and extremely doubtful it could sustain life. This attempt to explain this basic science is our foremost mission; to improve relations with the Muslin world.

49 You can have trees, or a view. But not both. The closest I'll get to seeing that threesome from my house is in that video. But thanks, CAC. I get out every once in a while, and catch a spectacular view when I least expect it. Like the moon-rise two nights ago when I was walking out of retail store with a great big sky view. The moon was the biggest I've ever seen it, being refracted through that much atmosphere while low in the sky and very little humidity here.

61 Serious fuck-up with Nascar -- the cable for the fancy Sprint Unlimited handing camera that can zip around the track -- fell on the track and wrecked the leader and several other cars in the top 10. Fox Sports fuck-up, I think. They are the ones running the camera system. Damaged like half the top 10 cars.

I cut the top out and drilled nice big vent holes - he now has a newer / better barrel than i do. a week goes by, then he asks how to start a fire in it. He's burned off a few gallons of gasoline trying to burn 3 green twigs he picked up. I think i should do his family a favor and take the drum away.

123 Seriously want to avoid using gasoline for starting fires. I had the gas can caught fire once and only once.

I had a pile of brush, mostly cedar the size of a Suburban accumulated. I dosed it with some old gas because it was damp out.  Well ,the fumes filled the pile, and when I lit it it sucked the flame in and there was a big woof and a mushroom cloud arose and went 300 feet high. I was just petrified the fire dept would see it.

I did!  I didn't totally binge view, I watched it over about a week.  It's Twin Peaks ala Eli Roth.   Since I like both of those thing, I enjoyed it.   I found the people complaining about it being gothic to be hilarious since it's based on a book that is explicitly neo-gothic.   It's kind of like all the people shocked that Apocalypto was so violent.  Yes, because a movie about the Mayans would never ever be violent.

Hemlock Grove, the series is a Netflix original and I think it's streaming only.  It's completely over the top and ridiculous and isn't anything close to being internally consistent.   But it gives me nekkid nekkid Landon Liboiron so I'm inclined to feel positively towards it.  I'm amused that this is the second werewolf that he's played.

200 Garlic marinade: 1/2 C dry red wine 2 T fresh squeezed lime or lemon juice 2 T minced or pressed garlic 2 T brown sugar Salt 1 pound flank steak Cilantro Salsa: 8-10 garlic cloves (I add more, but start with this) 1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped fresh cilantro 6 fresh jalapenos ( take seeds out if you're wimpy) 1 T fresh squeezed lime or lemon juice Salt Marinade the steak two hours, at least (I do it overnight) Thor grilled it, then I sliced it up in strips like fajitas. I used homemade (not by me) flour tortillas and topped with the pesto mixture. I also had Thor grill some green onions and had some with just the onion and cilantro, but the pesto was super good. We really liked it.

220 #186  Plastic surgery can work miracles.   Your daughter's friend's relatives should make sure she is seen by one as quickly as possible,  if that hasn't been done.  She may have had a preliminary consult in surgery,  which would be good as he would have advised on the first stages of repair or even done it himself.

Emotional scarring,  that is a different thing.

It Maybe that secession and regrouping as a smaller, more viable nation is the inevitable end. I hope and pray this is not so.

For whatever may come, however it plays out, I will remain patriotic to the old school vision of our great nation, a devotee of our once cherished traditions. I forever reject the "new America" and its hatred of everything that made our nation great and the beacon of freedom and liberty that it remains.

I have no children, so my life is mine to expend as I see fit. I likely will not live out a very long life. If so, so be it.

This is also the reason Jimmie Johnson has been so dominant in recent years. How did JJ go from average driver to one of the best ever in his 30s? He'd never dominated any level of racing his entire life. Answer -- Chad Knaus.

I think one of the problems with everyone thinking that the drivers are smaller is that the pit crews have gotten huge. The teams now recruit former college football and minor league hockey players.

And a lot of big guys are from racing families -- which eases their entry. 378 elizabethe, and chemjeff, I have beard of this "student evaluation" bullshit. Wasn't like that in my time! Dear god! What is happening to our "higher" "education"? My daughter, when I queried her about her classes while she was perusing her masters, mentioned "social justice" as being one of the cores. I rolled my eyes. GPS is like Google and Bing. They will give you what they think is the most direct route. If you do not mind going through inner city war zones or getting routed on a road with thirty stop lights on it. Or both.

Mine keeps trying to direct me to places I shouldn't really be. Overpasses with a -1 inch clearance, parkways that are marked 'No Trucks', and on to roads that simply do not exist.

Granted, I couldn't exist without my Garmin, (which I had to replace last week), but damn.....I just wish the Harpy inside wasn't trying to kill me.

I have nothing against female drivers. Well, I do: I married one, after managing her team. It's just that Danica couldn't carry Janet Guthrie's tampon case. There were a couple of woman drivers back in the iron age of open-road racing, and a score of gals in 1950's sprint cars. TV seems to think she's the first evah. I can remember when they said that about Lyn St.James (Evelyn Gene Cornwall), too.

possibly.  but it is also possible to push students too hard.

My general rule is, if they complain to me along the lines of "geez, do you think your class is my only class or something? this is a lot of work!" then I know I'm giving them enough.  if they aren't complaining, then I"m not pushing them enough.  if even the bright students are in my office totally lost and confused, then I'm pushing them too hard.

405 318 At Gordon's peak he was crazy dominant. He was just winning everything. Mainly because his crew chief was illegally modifying the car. Ray Everham was a smart man. This is also the reason Jimmie Johnson has been so dominant in recent years. How did JJ go from average driver to one of the best ever in his 30s? He'd never dominated any level of racing his entire life. Answer -- Chad Knaus. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at May 26, 2013 09:54 PM (R+6Q+) Can't really blame it on Knaus, he works for Hendrick and knows NASCAR won't penalize him like they would if he worked for Rousch, Gibbs, Penske, Waltrip, Petty, Childress, Gannasi, Front Row, or Joe Nemecheck. Johnson is also able to deflect alot of the hate because he seems like a real likable fellow. And the reason why he is winning in Cup when he didn't win in the other divisions it was because he was driving for owners that had shitty cars. Up until 10 years ago, the young drivers rode around in shitty cars hoping one of the big name teams would finally give them a shot at their cars. Then, ten years ago, everybody had to have the next "hot" driver, so guys went from 3 starts in Nationwide/Busch/Trucks to a full time ride with Gibbs, Hendrick, Penske or Rousch. If they don't deliver in the first year, they end up running in the truck series or a regional series for the rest of their lives.

410 As much as I despise Doonesbury, a while back they did a segment where one of the characters was recording celebrity voices to be used for GPS systems. One of the people they were going to use was Clint Eastwood. So, when it it is Eastwood's turn, he says, "Left...., Right..., Stop'. The kid at the recording console says, "Uh..., Mr Eastwood, we have 36 more phrases..", Eastwood replies, "Sorry kid. That's it"

414 I have just read more anout Bob Dole saying we of the "new" right are the problem in America. No ideas, apparent. Just obstructionist. New ideas, huh? Bob Dole was the "visionary" that first lost to George H.W. Bush (you know, the man of the "vision thing"), and then provided John McCain with the template of how to lose with dignity against a media-favored Democrat. I think we should take everything he counsels with a certain grain of salt. But what do I know? Having said that, my gut instinct is that I have just cast my last GOP ballot, because I am getting sick of the Chamblisses. I wouldn't want to impose myself upon this middlebrow chamber of commerce soiree that just wishes to drift with Progressive tides in peace.

421 367 Some big drivers. But more small. Gordon, Kahne, Stewart, JJ, Mark Martin. All small guys. The big guys are the exception. And a lot of big guys are from racing families -- which eases their entry. Guys from non-racing families have to actually win at the youth level to get noticed -- and it's a big advantage at the youth level to be small. Kyle Larson, the new wunderkind, is a good example. Kid has massive talent. He's also built like a jockey. Posted by: Flatbush Joe at May 26, 2013 10:09 PM (R+6Q+) The ones coming from open wheel and sprint cars have to be small. You want to see small, look at Indycar and F1. Those are some wee little fellas and gals. The ones coming up through the old feeder system tend to be man sized. Maybe not big men, but they look like giants compared to Danica.
