Remote-Control Helicopter Provides Aerial View of Taksim Demonstrations
— Ace

I'm linking this for two reasons:

1, as a demonstration of how anti-state propaganda is done.

2, Did you know that a video camera attached to a RC miniature helicopter could possibly produce such clear pictures? Or that a little RC chopper could be made, by electronic gyroscopes I assume, into such a stable photography platform? (Update: @comradearthur notes there are twitch-elimination programs people run on video after it's shot, such as VReveal, to produce stable-looking imagery.)

Because I did not. I've got a little bit of tech-shock here: Sure, I knew the government would have access to this level of quality electronics, but I didn't know it was something someone could just buy at the store.

Amusingly, a lot of protesters on the ground keep shooting lasers up at the RC chopper's camera to obliterate the picture. They assume it's a government probe -- they too assume, like me, that Only a Government could afford such a wonder.

Nope. Some citizen owns this eye in the sky. Possibly like this one, which you can have for under a grand. Bye-bye privacy, S. Weasel says.

Meanwhile, one man is staging a Lonely Protest, standing alone in the middle of Tasksim:

Meanwhile, government-worker and professional unions have joined the protests. And Erdogan is threatening to deploy the military to stop the protests if the police's tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets can't.

That would be interesting, because the military is supposed to defend the secularist vision Turkey.

Turkey's government warned Monday it may deploy the military against protesters who continue to defy officials by taking to the street in what the interior minister called "illegal" demonstrations.

The warning is the first time the Islamist-rooted government has mentioned use of the military to restore public order. The military establishment traditionally has been seen as a bastion of secularism in Turkey and a foe of past Islamist political figures.

"First, if necessary we will deploy the police," Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said on Monday. "If that's not enough we will call on the (national guard). But if events still require further action, and the governor so wishes, we will resort to calling on the military to contain these protests."

...

Five major unions representing public sector workers, doctors, engineers and architects have called their rank-and-file out on a one-day strike and march in city centers across Turkey. One analyst said it would be a "major move" if the Turkish government were to involve the military in its attempts to control the protests.

Below, video from the government crackdown on the demonstrators from June 15. The aftermath of it -- including children choking on tear gas -- is at around 4:20.

9 When I was in Vietnam 40 years ago I watched a cobra gunship destroy a Vietcong patrol outside our wires one night. The firefight took maybe 15 seconds, the enemy never got off a shot, and the next morning there was nothing identifiable as human left of the patrol. Electronics have taken even the stealth of sneaking around at night away. How many of you remember the two weeks of news blackouts at the start of the Iraq war? You do realize that you never heard anything about Saddam Hussein's army or Republican Guards after those two weeks don't you? What happened to them? The answer is they got slaughtered. Give the US military any kind of target and it is gone. Heat vision devices let our military see even disguised snipers. The only reason the Taliban have reformed in Afghanistan is because the Politicians have our military fighting with both hands behind their back and one foot in a bucket. Do you think Teh Won would pull any punches against an armed rebellion here? Posted by: An Observation at June 17, 2013 05:20 PM (ylhEn) An "armed" rebellion would not consist of "patrols" and ranked forces. It would be an insurgency sort of affair with people sniping, sabotaging, and booby trapping. It would be a bee attack against a sledgehammer wielding opponent.

14 I've seen it in archaeology shows. They would take a toy stealth model, cut a hole in the cardboard and fit in a digital camera that takes a photo every couple of seconds. They then use it to find ground disturbances. Really very simple.

Erdogan has been replacing the top brass since at  least 2011.

So the real question is how much control the generals have over the rest of the officer caste. My guess is that Islamist commanders  have been quietly putting their loyalists in  key positions as well.

So, yeah, it will be interesting to see if the military complies, because that will tell you how successful Erdogan has been in changing it.

Posted by: Arms Merchant at June 17, 2013 02:11 PM (5RUlF)

17 I suppose this will be test of how well Erdogan has managed to purge the officer corps of its Kemalist foundation and replace it with officers who either share Erdogan's Islamist ideology or at least are careerists willing to follow any orders.

Instapundit linked a youtube video like a month ago that was video of an RC plane with a HD camera attached.  There is some group that makes both fixed-wing planes and also helicopters and sells them.  You can get one for like $1000, if I recall correctly.

Honestly, the video was incredible.  They were flying over and under the golden gate bridge, and the dude flying it was standing on the beach with a virtual reality headset.

I would love to have a system like that.  Anybody remember the name of the YouTube group that made these videos?

90 Hi there! - did you know the crescent moon has absolutely nothing to do with islam? It totally doesn't appear on the flags or in the architecture of any islamic states or anything. That's why we tried to work it into the Penn. 9/11 memorial for Flight 93.

That's the same reason my delicious Crescent Rolls are shaped like that.

91 It's all fun and games until they break out the flying penis chopper.
Just make sure the landing strip is well indicated for landing.

92 One of the funniest things about the comments is reading an innocuous-sounding curious post and not realizing it until 20-30 morons go fucking apoplectic. It reminds me of a friend I had when I was eight who constantly freaked out when his (kind of slow in the head) little sister ever dared to open her mouth.

The aftermath of it -- including children choking on tear gas -- is at around 4:20.

That would be interesting, because the military is supposed to defend the secularist vision Turkey.

That was the case before Erdogan purged the military of anyone with a secularist thought in his head. He saw, and lived through what happened to one of his predecessors, and took steps to insure that wouldn't happen to him. Now he's supplanted Ataturk, the founder of modern secularist Turkey, with his face. He's everywhere. A two bit dictator pasting grand portraits of himself all over the country.

I really do hope the Turkish Military still has some balls, and takes this thug down...and I'm further hoping that if/when it happens, the U.S. doesn't get all pissy about it, like we did last time.

97 I've been flying a stabilized quad copter for nature video for a little while. You can set up a platform for line of sight HD video for about $200 if you build it yourself and know what you are doing. Plus the GoPro and good transmitter gets you around $600. Then you have to add in the multiplier for every time you fly it straight into the ground and have to replace everything. Seriously, its not privacy you need to worry about. Its getting beaned by a flying weed-whacker.

98 "the birds" scene was filmed at that 'school' ( which wasn't and isn't a school ) in the town of Bodega  ( two miles inland ) spliced with scenes of what was the town of Bodega Bay in 1962.

Why do you think so many people refused to leave New Orleans when Katrina was approaching? They knew their community, and what they'd do the second the rightful owners split.

I don't know but when a lib obama supporter watches glen beck and tells you about it and says things are a mess, I sort of take notice, it's highly unusual behavior.  I fail to see why that makes anyone a "lunatic".  I'm merely making an observation.  And he didn't only tell me, he sent out a mass email to all his friends.

But what about the NCO's? Everybody knows that it's the NCO's what get things done out there at the pointy end.

108 I had my AR Parrot quadricopter drone ($100 at Brookstone) up that high once. Lost the wi-fi connection to my phone and was lucky to find it behind a neighbor's house after it went into emergency landing mode. Pissed that I was mistakenly shooting stills and not video.

109 Looks like a Parrot AR Drone 2 to me. They're about $400. You control it with your iPad or iPhone. A 7 year old can easily operate one. I've even seen some guys pop a GoPro on them to get better film quality than the camera that comes with the AR. Very nice little toy.
