Rep Shelly Capito (R) leads in first WV Senate 2014 Poll
— CAC

Polling has commenced since Jay Rockefeller announced his retirement at the end of his term. Shelley Moore Capito is currently enjoying a massive lead in a race that is still a year-and-three-quarters out, so look for the state Democrats to fall behind a "conservative" candidate and close this gap, fast. I have this race as a toss-up this far out, and it will remain such well into 2014 even if Capito polls strong since the state has a notorious history of electing "conservative" Democrats. In head-to-head polling giving Senator Manchin a 21-point-positive approval rating, the Harper release finds Capito leading Nick Rahall by 18, Carte Goodwin by 25, and Robin Davis by 27 points.

Plenty of time for Republicans to screw this one up, I'm sure.

9 Yes, SHE. I knew her (tho' not well) waaaay back when she was Shelley Moore. Her daddy was governor of WVA for about 100 years, IIRC, so she should have good connections and political savvy. About all I remember of her personally is that she was very easy-going and pretty funny. Not wild, mind you, but amusing. Not what I would have expected from the daughter of a super-pol.

I grew up in W Va from Watergate through the Reagan years. Some thoughts on state politics: The Republican pols were widely known as crooks. Capito's father, Governor Arch Moore, is notable for never having uttered an honest word, ever. Not a bad guy, not a bad Gov, but never ever told the truth without a dishonest purpose. Democrat pols, on the other hand, were known as more honest but less intelligent. Manchin's father, A. James Manchin, was Sec of State and a real circus clown a la Joe Biden. Jay Rockefeller is notable as the greatest combination of honesty and intelligence ever to run for anything in WVa. I don't know of any scandal that attached itself to him while he was Governor, a real accomplishment.

The coal industry runs the state. There are, however, two sides: the companies and the union. Company people vote Republican, union folks vote Dem. Both sides are socially conservative, leaning libertarian. Both sides understand that selling coal is what runs the economy. They disagree on how to split the revenues.

Big Business Repubs depend on government for tax breaks and exceptions to rules to allow profitable variations on coal mining. They don't care what laws get passed, as they have no intention of following the law. That is what accountants and lawyers are for.

Union folks don't mind big government, as it keeps the mines reasonably safe and the air reasonably clean. They like government-funded stuff, but beyond that are real anarchists or libertarians. Most, historically, never had the income to pay taxes on anyway. They don't care what laws get passed, as they have no intention of following the law. They live out in the hollers, and gummint folks know better than to go there.

IMHO, this is what led to Obama looking foolish in the Dem primary there. His idea is a government that is involved in your life; nobody in WVa wants that. They want a check, some free cheese, and thank you very much get off my lawn.

In West Virginia, everything gets named after a politician. While Byrd leads the race, Manchin, Rockefeller and Rahall all have buildings/bridges/roads, etc. named after them. Byrd's are so prolific, they are often refered to as Byrd Droppings.

Capito is already serving as congress critter in a fairly conservative district. However, she's more in the line of (R)s from the state of Maine and Rhode Island, as well as that (alleged) coke whore from Alaska, so don't get too excited.

Manchin is quite possibly done. The gun issue has really turned off solid democrats in this state. He is also very Biden-esqe. My wife and I have both met him and spoke to him at different times. He gives the impression of the dumbest, but best dressed/most popular kid in school running for school president. He is also a camera whore. After the Upper Big Branch mine disaster, he beat his ass as fast as he could to find a camera to say all had survived, except one, which we know now is the complete opposite. That's why, after Newtown, he was one of the first pols on TV calling for discussions on gun violence, and that nothing should be off the table. People I know in the (D) party fundraising apparatus are publicly supporting him, but told me it has done serious damage. They are hoping people have short memories when the election cycle comes back around.
