— Ace Eh, I don't care about Kate Middleton, and I certainly don't care about this of a writer, but (redacted, here's the link).
I've actually now skimmed the offending article, which I only previously saw quoted, and I think it's the British tabloid media making a scandal out of nothing.
The essay is a sharp-tongued critique on the image-making apparatus of the royal family (and royals through history) as well as the image-making apparatus of courtiers and media. It's really not about Kate Middleton specifically, though that is a jumping off point for the essay.
Apologies, story retracted, sorry I posted this without reading the essay, which can be found here.
Note the essay is still negative and critical; and yes, she does bring up a lot of Stepford Bride imagery regarding Middleton. But the object is not really Kate Middleton, nor her looks.
Again, not exactly.
It strikes me overall as a perfectly fair essay to write -- bitter and tart, sure, but completely in-the-bounds -- and not one which should be jumped up into some Crime Against the State.

From all accounts, Kate Middleton is a perfectly nice woman, who happens to have fallen in love with and married the future King of the United Kingdom. Some people in the UK resent this because they are anti-monarchists. Some fat lonely sweathogs resent this because Kate is easy on the eyes and has a pretty wonderful life
---
I'm with you. Kate seems nice enough. She's a pretty women who seems to dress well. Much easier when you have great wealth at your disposal. I find the monarchy thing dumb, but maybe in today's age it has benefits. It satisfies the masses idol worship without ceding any real power. WOuldn't we be better of if Obama were a mere figure head?

The critic's comments tell me more about her than about K.M. She "sees" certain things in K.M.; not that K.M. is actually any of the things she "sees".
This all about the critic and her needs - K.M. is just a convenient target that the critic can shoot at.

Mitosis? In which 2 identical copies are made from a single individual, both possessing the ability to further divide in the future? That would imply another erg in existence, and that erg might reproduce in the future to an exact copy of itself. For the love of all that is holy, and for the faith of anything close to evolutionary science, I have to believe erg is an anomalous biological dead end to which neither God nor nature would tolerate additional copies.

"I don't care about the royals and I think monarchy is silly in this day and age.."
About 30 to 50 percent of the countries today would benefit from a total monarchy. Far too many countries have rushed the process and devolved into mob rule or two-bit dictatorships.
Give the people a King. They can understand that.

I like the other sidebar story better, about the GM profits....
On the 'balance sheet' is somthing called 'Goodwill'... its a measurment of things like brand name recognition...
GM took a 27 BILLION hit on their 'Goodwill'.... by going bankrupt.... but what sad is that this is considered a Loss... and thus.... a Tax Writeoff.... so although GM says they have a few billion in profit (as Obama likes to tout)... they actualy had a REAL 3 Billion Loss... then a 27 Billion loss of Reputation... for which they get a 30 Billion PLUS tax writeoff.... which they will keep on the books...
Ergo... GM paid no Taxes last year.... and will not for years in the future... because of a voluntary hit to their own reputation...
I had no idea this was even Possible.... let alone LEGAL under our F'd up Tax law.

I think this might be what I've been talking about lately: People tend to construct a self-definition chiefly by defining oneself against the Hated Other, the one they deem unworthy, and thus set out to make themselves the perfect opposite of that other
----
People who do this have very lonly lives. They may be married and have families, but their lives are devoid of any real meaning. Its quite sad. But these people are tolerable right up until they start trying to get meaning out of their lives by infringing upon mine - or taking what belongs to me (like my income).

Actually, it should be King William (Gates) and King George (Soros).
The world would be much better off if the rich would do what they've done for centuries - rule over people who need ruling.
Use a few hundred million to put together a group of mercenaries and take over an African nation. Bring order. Compete with your fellow kings to see who builds a better country.
Make a fucking difference with your life and wealth.
Then, in a few hundred years, ease the country into self rule if it's ready.

I'm not done with the book yet, but pretty close. As some of the above comments tip you, you have to be open to the idea that Cromwell wasn't the Prot Torquemada.
The title really is more characterizing the people around Henry than the doings at Wolf Hall--which were a little fucked up. And the book also has a cast list up front, which I know means I'll have to keep looking back to remind myself which pasty-faced suckup is which.
I guess not a full recco, but to keep next to the crapper? Sure. It is very well-written, give her that.

"I saw Kate becoming a jointed doll on which certain rags are hung," Mantel said in a lecture at the British Museum in London earlier this month in which she spoke about her changing views about the princess.
"She was a shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own, entirely defined by what she wore. These days she is a mother-to-be, and draped in another set of threadbare attributions."
No, that's envy right there, dressed it up in highfalutin' "look at what an intellectual I am" terms, because she can't admit to herself what a bitch she's being, but envy just the same.

Not saying that Ace isn't on the money about the proximate cause of Hilary Mantel's critique of Middleton (because it's pretty clear that he is), but there is another, underlying cause - the tremendous envy and resentment towards any type of success/fame/achievement/acclaim that is, and long has been, endemic in the U.K.
I suspect it's a legacy of the class system, but it's a very real and pernicious thing over there - and one of the reasons (besides absurd tax burdens) that so many Brit celebrities opt to relocate elsewhere. It takes a bit of getting used to when one sees it - otherwise very personable and down-to-earth folks getting themselves worked up into a dark rage over one of their fellow Britons having a turn of good luck or attaining some rewarding goal, as if that somehow took something from them. But it's there, just like the "reading" that goes on when one Brit meets another to determine their place in the social hierarchy and how they are consequently to be treated.

Hilary Mantels books are worth reading; but her looks would melt down a four hour Cialis erection. OTOH Kate Middleton is a very nice looking lady; and her younger sister Pippa has a posterior that drooling leering dirty old men in England (I know them--I'm just a drooling leering dirty old man here in the good ol' USA) think is the best ass in Christendom.
So Hilary, I'll read your books--they're well worth reading. But as your opinions about how modern attractive women look, I'll repeat the advice the Italian women gave the Pope about contraception. "You no playa da game, you no maka the rules!"
