— Ace On Thursday, I think, in the Open Thread round-up, I mentioned this story, claiming that a principal was forcing kids to "kneel" before him. In the comments DAve said I had the story completely wrong but I failed to follow up.
Via @dloesch, there's a lot more to this story and it never should have been used (as I used it) for quick-hit outrage purposes.
Basically the school's idea is this: Kids get all hyper, running around at recess, then they continue that hyper behavior when it's time to come back in from lunch, running and tripping and shouting like demons, as kids will. So, the school has them take a knee at the end of lunch, as a coach might do, to get that hyper energy to dissipate out from them, and I guess to change their minds over from the Run Like Angry Vikings setting to the Get Ready to Sit Still and Listen to a Teacher Talking setting.
Whatever the merits of this policy are, it certainly isn't a case of a principal demanding kids kneel before Zod.
And, by way of apology, here's some polar bear cubs playing with a giant ball.

I was never particularly on the outrage bandwagon for this one. I'm glad my initial reaction was the right one.
Even though it's OT, I'm bringing up this comment from the previous thread just because it's so TRUE. Mark Knoller does droll better than just about anyone except Brit Hume.
"So Horseface is gong to give a presser on Syria shortly. Here's Mark Knoller commenting on it on Twitter (via Twitchy):

This was still a stupid idea, but it could've been made a lot better by simply making the kids sit in the cafeteria instead of kneeling.
Posted by: Rick C at August 26, 2013 02:01 PM (A9FNw)
Remember, once upon a time teachers could actually PUNISH students who misbehaved in class. Now you can't so much as give them a stern talking to without risking the wrath of the helicopter parent. So it makes sense to try and get the kids settled down before class starts up again.
And I think the 'take a knee" routine actually works quite well in that way, since sitting makes it a lot easier to fidget than does kneeling.

Funny, when I was a child, at the end of lunch or recess, we would all line up before going into class. We didn't need to kneel to "dissipate" energy. When we were quiet (sometimes after a smack with a ruler), we went back to our desks.
That being said, I find the kneeling abhorrent regardless. No man should kneel except to God.

The principal's use of the phrase "take a knee" makes it pretty clear to me that the origin is from athletics, not politics. I'm sure these kids are doing the same for their gym teachers and soccer coaches.
Moreover, what's wrong with children submitting to adult authority?

Oh, come on! Taking a knee is an age-old practice in sports and the military after exercise and it doesn't (necessarily) have anything to do with a show of dominance/submission. It's usually about catching breather and a quick lesson before moving onto something else. Big deal.
There are a lot of things to get outraged about in modern education - this ain't one of them.

I won't say that it actually reduced the hyperactivity level, since it was almost as likely to happen just before the team rushed into play as after, or during practice, but it is a standard, nevertheless.
That having been said, I agree that five minutes in the cafeteria, seated, would have been just as effective, and less confusing as to intent.

The only reason the intent is confused is because of the monolithic gynocracy that does not understand boys, wants to turn them into little girls with drugs or hectoring, and will never accept a practice that has roots in male-oriented sports and the military.

You like me!!! You really really like me!!!
No seriously the whole rightosphere ran with this when the first "kneel before him" headline went up. It's starting to happen an awful lot now- what we so used to associate with the left that we don't check ourselves for it. Breitbart is especially bad about this sort of thing lately. As a result we not only look foolish and communicate falsehoods but spend so much outrage on false crises that we don't have any left when things really merit outrage.
