Retraction: Principal Explains Reason for "Take a Knee" Policy
— Ace

On Thursday, I think, in the Open Thread round-up, I mentioned this story, claiming that a principal was forcing kids to "kneel" before him. In the comments DAve said I had the story completely wrong but I failed to follow up.

Via @dloesch, there's a lot more to this story and it never should have been used (as I used it) for quick-hit outrage purposes.

Basically the school's idea is this: Kids get all hyper, running around at recess, then they continue that hyper behavior when it's time to come back in from lunch, running and tripping and shouting like demons, as kids will. So, the school has them take a knee at the end of lunch, as a coach might do, to get that hyper energy to dissipate out from them, and I guess to change their minds over from the Run Like Angry Vikings setting to the Get Ready to Sit Still and Listen to a Teacher Talking setting.

Whatever the merits of this policy are, it certainly isn't a case of a principal demanding kids kneel before Zod.

And, by way of apology, here's some polar bear cubs playing with a giant ball.

1 So is this why the White House press corps does it for Obama? To dissipate that spaz-energy?

2 Yeah, it's unfortunate when these sorts of stories get distorted. Sadly, there are so many instances of real abuses in schools, it's easy to believe one like this.

3 Whatever did generations of school kids do when they came back in to class after lunch/recess? This was still a stupid idea, but it could've been made a lot better by simply making the kids sit in the cafeteria instead of kneeling.

Remember, once upon a time teachers could actually PUNISH students who misbehaved in class.  Now you can't   so much as give them a stern talking to without risking the wrath of the helicopter parent.   So it makes sense to try and get the kids settled down before class starts up again.

And I think the 'take a knee" routine actually works quite well in that way, since sitting    makes it a lot easier to fidget than does kneeling.

Funny, when I was a child, at the end of lunch or recess, we would all line up before going into class.  We didn't need to kneel to "dissipate"  energy.  When we were quiet (sometimes after a smack with a ruler), we went back to our desks.

That being said, I find the kneeling abhorrent regardless.  No man should kneel except to God.

72 Kneeling is still far too submissive and reeks of Euro-classism. Only reason to kneel is to either propose, surrender, or give oral sex. It is an ugly posture with ugly political echoes. It is telling that such an ugly and subordinate posture was chosen by a government worker. It would not have upset anyone if they had kids line up with their hands in their pockets. But that isn't submissive enough, I think, for the government authority figures to consider.

The principal's use of the phrase "take a knee" makes it pretty clear to me that the origin is from athletics, not politics. I'm sure these kids are doing the same for their gym teachers and soccer coaches.

Moreover, what's wrong with children submitting to adult authority?

First part's fine. Second, um, submission? Yeah, we're fine with voluntary association and good conduct, but submission is for serfs, slaves, and Islamists.

111 "I don't like the "take a knee" concept any better."

Oh, come on!  Taking a knee is an age-old practice in sports and the military after exercise and it doesn't (necessarily) have anything to do with a  show of dominance/submission.   It's usually about catching  breather and a quick lesson before moving onto something else.  Big deal.

There are a lot of things to get outraged about in modern education - this ain't one of them.

116 "Take a knee" was the first command issued by ANY PE coach or team coach, when he/she was about to issues instruction or direction and wanted eye contact with a medium-sized group. Since there aren't chairs usually available on football/soccer fields, having the team members take a knee was the easiest way to ensure that the coach's eyes were a foot or so above the others so that they could see everyone, and everyone could see the coach.

I won't say that it actually reduced the hyperactivity level, since it was almost as likely to happen just before the team rushed into play as after, or during practice, but it is a standard, nevertheless.

That having been said, I agree that five minutes in the cafeteria, seated, would have been just as effective, and less confusing as to intent.

152 Eh. If the kids actually *will* settle their asses down without taking a knee, then, sure, they can submit to authority on their feet or on their heads for that matter. This is just like the uniform thing---public schools in good areas don't usually have uniforms because their students and parents can handle choosing their clothes. Public schools in the ghetto have uniforms because if they don't force uniforms they have trouble. Where kids actually do settle down, the teachers and principal let them choose how. Please note I'm not including private schools in my uniform analogy; I know they use uniforms for different reasons.

160 @bonhomme: Never. I don't believe in corporal punishment by persons other than the parents. I was swatted at home when deserving. I'm familiar with the practice in sports and in uniform. No issues with either. The former is a voluntary activity in the first place, and the military rightly counts on lawful subordination. I just think there are ways that are effective that don't involve kneeling on command. Am I more sensitive to it, based on the relationship I now see between the people and the government? I know a lot of people are rightly concerned about a lack of respect for authority - but in large part "Authority" has squandered that respect, and it must be re-earned. Earned. Not demanded.
