Russians arrest notorious malware creator
— Purple Avenger

The guy was selling malware exploit kits to cyber-criminals

...Russian police have reportedly arrested a man on suspicion of masterminding two infamous hacking tools.

He is suspected of being the man behind the alias Paunch - the nickname used by the creator of the Blackhole and Cool exploit kits, sold to cybercriminals to infect web users with malware.

The Russian authorities have not confirmed the details.

But security firms said they had already detected a decline in the programs' use...

I'm betting they make him an offer he can't refuse. Go to work for FSB, or rot in the basement of Lubyanka for the rest of his life.

The Soviets had some outposts out in the tundra and had buried the power/comms cables to them.

Dug down to where the cables should have been and found nothing.  They eventually found the cables 25-30' down.

The Greenpeace clowns are in serious trouble. Jail in Russia ain't no laughing matter. They are likely to spend years in the slammer. And Russian slammers ain't fun.

And they'll likely lose their boat too. So yeah, fuck em. Next time they'll harass less aggressive targets.

108 The Russians never did forgive Greenpeace for going after their whaling ships back in the Commie days. Bloom County had fun with that whole thing, which fortunately ended without loss of life. Then about a decade ago we had those "Whale Wars" dolts on APL doing it again. At that point (doubtless) Dear Leader Putin approved measures to arrest and detain those pinko posers the next time they went after Mother Russia instead of the corrupt running-dog exploiters of the decadent burgeois West like they were supposed to.

It must be cool to be the hacker guy - right up to the point someone announces they know who you are and where you live. 112 I posted about DISCONNECT and add-in for Chrome that strips your IP address. Judging from its description, Disconnect does not strip your IP address; it blocks loading known third-party tracking code. If true, this means that the server youÂ’re visiting still gets your IP address (and anyone intercepting your traffic still gets your IP address). You can test this by going to a web site that repeats your IP address back to you (such as the one I linked in my nick). That will tell you what IP address the remote server sees. You canÂ’t really block IP addresses on the net; you can only anonymize them by running all of your requests through a proxy server; but this, of course, means that all of your traffic is routed through the proxy, and can be watched by hacking that proxy.

113 84 In theory, you could have an unhackable OS, but the effort required to do it is insanely high. You'd need genuinely correct code and need to generate the mathematical correctness proofs to show the code correct...and run that proven correct code on proven correct hardware with no errata. --- You'd also have to hope that, if it all works, it doesn't take enough bandwidth that it makes running it a complete waste of time on whatever platform you're using.

There's a new class of pseudo-proxies or VM'd proxies; they only exist for a session and are hosted on unsuspecting, unpatched severs scattered about the intertubes.  S,o while you would still be vulnerable to backtracking via hardware logs - monitoring would be difficult.

189 Can we go off topic anymore?  I'm a gonna....

National park service is Sally Jewell, former ceo of REI.
Jonathon Jarvis is head of NPS.

Jewell said she would employee no one in interior if they were climate deniers.
Jarvis is responsible, prior to his appointment, for shutting down the Drakes Bay Oyster Company, committing scientific misconduct by falsifying data that seemed to support the Oyster company causing great harm to seals, and then denying FOIA requests for the data.

See letter from eenews.net Goodman to Salazar opposing Jarvis as head of NPS because of unethical improprieties.

Golly.  No wonder they're taking hostages.   They're arrogant fascists.
Why would Sally Jewell screw with her former customers at REI by closing down all their recreational playgrounds?  What a short sighted wench.

203 I have to say that if I were Putin, I would absolutely put a team of hackers on the ACA site. Since the Dims and Obama have screwed the pooch already with their lame-ass roll-out, it wouldn't take much to keep inserting little viruses, trojan horses, whatever to keep the administration tied up in knots domestically. Make Oblabla/Dims use up their political capital on this dog's breakfast of a healthcare act. And that would give you even a freer hand in the world. Chinese should be hopping on this too for that matter. It's exactly the kind of low cost-low risk operation that could yield big results in the arena of global politics.

We see you working Vince. Middle class guy named White deals with Schwartz's and loses. He dies and the Schwartz's seemingly live on to enjoy their riches. But its a pyrrhic victory because while they may have beat White in business, they are forced to live the rest of their lives looking over their shoulder.
