Saturday Car Thread 12/21/13 - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Welcome to the barely-a-post car thread. There are gifts to be bought and gifts to be wrapped, so you get what you get. Got it?

What's this? A federal agency comes to their senses?

It is one heck of a bizarre, twisted role reversal when the Environmental Protection Agency is the one acting as the voice of reason in any of their countless political battles, but I take it as a testament to just how deeply messed up this entire Renewable Fuel Standard debacle really is. Big Ethanol flew into an almighty uproar last month when the EPA announced that they were finally planning to relent on their scheduled increases to the biofuel volumes that refiners are required to blend into the nationÂ’s fuel supply, and the powerful lobby has been hinting that they will challenge the EPAÂ’s legal authority to make any adjustments to the RFS other than ones that continue to expand the mandate.

Read the rest here.

Motor Trend test drives the most powerful drop-top Camaro ever and it looks like a $60k+ meh.

2 Ah yes. Biofuel.

Starving people on the margins is apparently perfectly all right with the eco-fascists.

Ethanol should be used for one thing, and one thing only.

Turning   food   vehicle  fuel  is  the  largest   green  energy  fraud  of  all.

An  approximately  energy   neutral   process --  it consumes  as  much  energy,  in  the  form  of   petroleum  and  natural  gas,  as  it  supplies.   And  food  disappears  off  the  market,  and  food  prices  go  up.

It's   nuts.

Mom inhaled sharply, but then said: "Oh, that's easy. A pussy is a cat, like our little Chico.
A bitch is a female dog, like our Sandy."

"Thanks, Mom."

He then found his Dad out in the garage.

"Dad, the guys at school are using words I don't understand."

"What words, son?"

"Pussy and bitch. I asked Mom, but I don't think she told me the right meanings."

Dad said: "Son, never ask your mother about these things, ask me instead. Let me explain it like this."
He pulled a Playboy from his workbench, turned to the centerfold, drew a circle around the pubic area and said: "Son, everything inside the circle is pussy."

"Okay, Dad. Then what's a bitch?"

Dad replied: "Everything outside the circle."

56 Hey - maybe one of you gearheads can help me..

I took my car into the state emissions testing station the other day..  When they were done and removed the hookup to the computer, I had 2 lights on the dash on.. battery & brakes.

They said don't worry about it, it'll go out.  It didn't.  When I started it up today, they were not on, but after a half hour drive, they came back on.. and then the check airbag light came on.. then all the meters started acting goofy.

I barely made it back home when the engine died and all I got was fast clicks.  I kept it off and waited an hour and it restarted ok, but the original 2 check lights are still on.

So, question.. could the emissions testers have screwed up the computer?  Of course it's a Saturday afternoon and no one can look at it til Monday.

Any suggestions?  If I unhook the battery will that re-set things?

Well.. I am usually all for buying American.  But I simply refuse to look art any make of car that has only a 36,000 mile warranty.  That's two years driving for me.

So, while I like the Ford Focus and some other American models, I had to scratch them off my list when looking at cars recently.  My Hyundai Santa Fe came with a 60,000 bumper to bumper and a 10 yr 100,000 drive train warranty.

56 You can disconnect the battery, but Monday I'd go down and raise hell at the testing place.  Possible the tech disconnected some wires in connecting the OBD connector, but HIGHLY unlikely cause.  Sounds either bizarre or mailicious to me.  I assume there was an underhood inspection as well based on the lights you're seeing-

Computer wouldn't be damaged by the tester.  Take it back before anyone else works on it or you'll have no warranty

89 Big cities have most of the jobs and all of the competition. Now, there are certainly dying towns that aren't going anywhere. But there is surprising opportunity in small to medium sized towns, as well as lower cost of living, less crime, no traffic jams and a much better attitude about weapons. But, you guys can keep your cities if you like them. Having experienced both, I find the choice easy.

92 @83 During the carmakers' price wars, mid 50's to early 70's, this was not a bad strategy, especially considering what happened to resale when rust showed up, usually just after two years. The real smart move was to find a vulgarian egotist who needed a new car every year, and trade in for his trade-ins.

93 Guy Mohawk most of the kids' toys and the wife's half used bottles of expensive beauty stuff are impractical as well.  Get the Roadster.  You got them a house to clutter with their stuff, right?  This'll be your space.

I don't know how this can be known or supported as true.

Like everything else on the internet....

Actually, it's one of the standard items rolled up into a yearly cost of ownership estimate, available at pretty much every car site.

I exaggerate a tad for comic effect, as I am wont to do, but not by much. The CTS street price looks to be in the low $40ks, first year depreciation is a staggering $11k+.

95 But there is surprising opportunity in small to medium sized towns, as well as lower cost of living, less crime, no traffic jams and a much better attitude about weapons.

But, you guys can keep your cities if you like them. Having experienced both, I find the choice easy.

Oh I agree about the choice, it's just that one has to find the opportunity and that's a bit easier said than done.

Did she ever change the fuel filters? Did she buy cheap gas where there was a shitload of sediment in the tanks? Most likely caused by crud buildup

Caddys have long been famous for quick depreciation. Back when the styles changed enough to notice, there was nothing that looked worse than a Caddy that was "one year too old".

Tim, well it looks like the 63 was a limited production final year, so I don't think my temporary affair is gonna turn into a marriage.  A quick review on the net looks like $90K minimum.

You are the one that knows your own situation. Moving to the exurbs is the fast growing migration in the USA today. I would encourage you to keep researching if you like the idea but don't see yet how to swing it. It isn't often you see a pro-poverty protest. At least, that is effectively what this is, as the protestors are upset about the effects of high paid tech workers moving in to their city.

I have a 2012 BMW 535ix. I have had four cars since 1987, all BMWs. My previous one was a classic 1995 BMW 525i a and when I knew that car was going to start giving me problems after 15+ years, I started looking at other cars while on the roads. Jaguars used to be distinct, but when I found that my car was parked next to one at the garage where I work, I hat to really look at it. It didnÂ’t look like a Jag. I noticed that Mustangs have modernized but still look like Mustangs.

IIANM the first split window coupe came out in 62 mid-year. But it doesn't matter whether its 62 or 63 they are both worth a shit ton of money now.

New cars have all the appeal of a tree stump.  There's no denying that the engineering is excellent, but somewhere along the line Detroit engineered the visual appeal out of their products.

  Cookiecutter styling.

The oldies at least were identifiable even among different models by the same manufacturer.

Yup, so true.  Cars, and particularly American cars, used to have such wonderful distinctive styling.  Now they all look the same and about as exciting as boiled turnips.

I emailed Bill Krzyk from Honor flight Myrtle Beach and asked for a bio on Mr. Harrison. He was kind enough to provide the bio and a pic of him. I can't do anything to change his condition, but I can make sure that several thousand people who pass through this blog on a daily basis know that he existed. I'll be putting up a post dedicated to him on Christmas day. Thank you for sending a card to him. I sent a letter and a little Christmas gift to him too.

128 Speaking of styling- I just finished up my re-work of a truck I picked up locally. I couldn't see fit to drop 20k plus on a truck; just seemed too much money for ANY vehicle; too many out there all look the same, too. Not that I haven't lusted for a nice Ford HD-outfitted on. Oh yes. But I went another route--- I bought a 1996 red GMC Sierra 1500 stepside (with the exposed fender look) that had a 5.7L/350 in it. Nothing too rad when I got it; paint was IMMACULATE, had 128k miles, and the interior was near mint looking. Paid 2k dollars for it. Drove it a while, thinking something was missing. Yep- some style. So, I went old-school on it. I started researching the look from 50's trucks, and went that route. After fixing the engine (had to re-do heads, ALL NEW INTAKE system, new dist/rotor/wires/etc, new fuel pump, and rebuilt transmission) it absolutely purrs. I put custom wood bed rails / stakes on the sides (drawing in the look of the old Lil' Red Truck/Warlocks from 70's Dodges), sold the wheels off and put on custom ralleye-style deep steel rims powder-coated white, then added 1953 GMC hub caps (look like baby moons) on those. Put on a roll-up tarp bed cover underneath. I went way better than I expected. The 20-inch chrome wheel/roller look seems SO out of place on trucks, let alone cars. I kept my wheels at 15'' diameter with deep off-sets and 8'' wide rims. The intake system on the 90s GM trucks really sucked (look up 'spyder' intake) but the engines were solid. People love the old-school look. A lot...
