Saturday Evening Thread
— DrewM

Everyone is in FREAK OUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN MODE? because the Zimmerman jury sent a note to the judge saying, "“May we please have clarification on instructions regarding manslaughter?”

Everyone thinks that means Murder 2 is off the table.

Beyond that, everyone is talking out their ass.

The definition of justified homicide is part of the Manslaughter instruction (pdf).

Sounds like everyone agrees the reply will be something like, "Um, what the hell do you want to know?"

If they had decided against SD, MS is a no-brainer gulity." *** That's no worry, only an observation that they did nt start at the tale end of jury instructions, as MOM had suggested. Frankly, that is not surprising.

24 Hannity had furman and two attorneys on the other day.  One of the attorneys was off the wall with his logic.  He basically said the people would have to live with whatever the jury decided, making me think he knew something the rest of us didn't know.

What are the parameters for a jury.  I thought they were only allowed to consider the charges put before them.  This guy made it sound very different from that.

71 All this question means is that those sharp cookies on that jury somehow got past the top of the first page of the jury instructions:

"The killing of a human being is justifiable and lawful if necessarily done while resisting an attempt to murder or commit a felony upon George Zimmerman."

Simple plain english for dumb-asses who are likely to end up on the jury.
Asking questions about any thing beyond that point either means the jury is deliberately wasting people's time or decided nobody committed a felony upon GZ.

99 I can't sit by silently and take all the references to GZ being guilty of something due to the operator's comment about not following TM!!! It's WRONG to think the case should turn on the detail that GZ might not have conformed to the suggestion that he not follow TM. To conclude that something that happened before an event CAUSED the event is a legal and logical FALLACY. That error in thinking is classically known as the "post hoc ergo propter hoc" problem whereby people think simplistically that an event CAUSES what may happen later in time. You might as well blame the sunrise, or TM's decision to go to the store..... because those events also temporally "led to" the tragedy.

My wife and I were talking about this last night. If GZ is acquitted or there is a hung jury and no retrial, what does he do to ensure the safety of himself and his family for the rest of their lives? If they change their names and/or move to another part of the country (or even out of the country), someone will figure out their new names or where they now live. It's the one time it would be preferable to be put into the Witness Protection Program, as the government would create a completely new identity for you. But, of course, you could never see your friends or family again.

127 Only question for jury is did Zimmerman have any other reasonable option other than discharging his weapon? If the consider the evidence the obvious answer is no. Because of significance of a not guilty verdict I think they are going to go through each and every procedural turn so their verdict which is simple appears to have been more complex in reaching.

130 Alright, this is open, so I'm gonna rant about something that pissed me off today. I'm an insurance agent. I met with a lady a couple weeks back who needed health insurance. I met with her, spent over an hour answering her questions and helping her customize a plan just for her situation. She dithered, I followed up over the following weeks, sending a highlighted brochures, multiple deductible options and prices, etc. today she tells me " oh, yea, I took what we did to another agent and he signed me up". Not " someone else showed me a plan I like better", not " you've personally offended me because reasons" , no " I took your hard work and gave it to someone who didnt do a damn thing to earn it", the reason being that his office was closer to her than mine. So... Fuck YOU you unbelievable scrunt. You took money( through residuals, that's how I get paid) that you admitted that I'd EARNED ( she got what I'd worked hard to design, after all, what I proposed was what she wound up getting ) and just gave it to someone else because you're a bitch. Fuck you, fuck you, FUCK YOU. You have a right to go with something different, or to say no to what I proposed, and I won't say boo. But don't you dare make me do all the work and reward someone you found in the phone book. I'm not a charity.

There is that fear, but I think Witness Protection details are kept under wraps by the government (as least based on my conversations with a friend of mine who works for a certain government agency involved in that area). After all, think of the problems it could cause the government with future cases if witnesses thought that their new identity and location could be leaked? The government wouldn't be able to prosecute various cases in which they needed the cooperation of certain witnesses. The government may not use the Witness Protection Program that often, but if they lose it completely as an option, it could cause serious problems.

Peaches, I'd just figure that there would have been at least a dozen of the pundits who would have mentioned it. Your friend might be addressing what is the typical practice.

And of course the NSA and IRS would NEVER let that info get out...

Of course the main reason GZ won't be put into the witness protection program is that it is the government that is out to fry his ass.  The government only puts someone in the WPP is they help them fry someone else.  If you somehow manage to beat the government in court, they don't particularly care what happens to you afterwards.

It seems like common sense after reading the instructions as a whole that since self-defense prevents a conviction on either charge, they should consider it first. I certainly wish the instructions were written that way. But they are not......

they are gonna decide tonight.  Because in stead of ordering in dinner, they would ask to adjourn.  They didn't.  They are close.  They are gonna decide and then get out of town tomorrow (or tonight).  That's my guess.  I heard they have been asked to postpone announcing the verdict until Monday so LE can deal with the rioters.  I don't think the judge would do that because the jurors would be sequestered for another day.

Question, what is the juror with 8 kids who works in a nursing home doing for childcare when she is sequestered for so long?

294 From the jury instructions:

"If George Zimmerman was not engaged in an unlawful activity and was attacked in any place where he had a right to be, he had no duty to retreat and had the right to stand his ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he reasonably believed that it was necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or another or to prevent the commission of a forcible felony."

I find myself confused here in that Florida law seems to allow a self-defense claim but also allows the Stand Your Ground claim, and this instruction has wording reminiscent of SYG, the "no duty to retreat".

Except that SYG isn't really applicable in a situation where retreat isn't physically possible. This was STG, Stuck To Ground. The Zimmerman defense team didn't invoke SYG. They did invoke self-defense. So why the SYG wording in the instructions?

312 It looks like, worst case, Zimmerman will successfully appeal ... it's glaringly clear that he was forced to act in self-defense. What then? It also seems clear that the judge is either incompetent or deliberately robbing Zimmerman of the various legal protections to which he's entitled. What does Zimmerman have to do to have the judge removed from the bench and tossed into the Florida state system for a few years? What are the dimensions of the typical judge's gavel? is there a shadow box available at Hobby Lobby that would fit? I'm reasonably certain that frames to hold the licenses-to-practice of the prosecution team are available. If the jury finds Z. guilty, given the evidence of the case, can he charge the jurors with misconduct? He has certain rights, and if found guilty, given the facts of the case, it seems that the jurors must have ignored the law.

314  Thunderb, I have a BIL like that. First class jerk.  I do A/c so he was getting both his units replaced, but did he ask any advice ???!!!  No, they put in just what he had before but higher SEER.  One quit last summer so he was cooling with one only.  Usual summer bill $450 + month. He could have put two smaller units
and saved a bundle on price and monthly operating. SEER depends a lot on install and the house insulation etc.His attic is hotter than hades, no vents. So his bill is probably just the same as before.

Most installs years ago were far too large tonnage. The way to check is , on the hottest midsummer day the a/c should not shutoff at all in the afternoon and might even let the house heat up inside a few degrees. It will keep the humidity down running that much. If it shuts off for any length of time that day it is way oversized.

I admit to not watching this thing real close, but even the daily headlines across the net tell a pretty consistent story of what happened.

GZ was "on duty", saw the guy, called the cops, lost track of him for 4 minutes while TM told Jenteal he was gonna jump a creepy ass cracker, GZ got jumped and pounded on, other people see that happening, GZ shoots him.

Both side's testimony say the same thing, not the lawyers, but the witnesses.  Seems pretty straight forward to me.

Top.  Men.

I wish my AC was too much tonnage. It gets hotter than hades (defined as at least 10 degrees above setpoint) in the house during the hot summer days and the AC never shuts off until the sun goes down. Temp at the vents are in spec and it's putting out the right amount of air, but I have a huge open space that is harder than hell to heat in the winter and cool in the summer.

321 Another point of Florida law that I find odd is that the Stand Your Ground law apparently allows someone to initiate a confrontation, and then use deadly force if the confrontation escalates to where they find themselves in fear for their life. It has been proposed to close that loophole.

But the jury instructions here say, "If George Zimmerman was not engaged in an unlawful activity and was attacked in any place where he had a right to be", which implies that if the jurors believed GZ had attacked TM then GZ would be denied a self-defense claim.

So that seems inconsistent.

Let the mechanic do the compression test, and a leak-down test, then go from there.

Rislone is just a bandade, you use to sell a lemon. It works long enough to stop the smoking etc, but it does NOT repair it, and will eventually clog the oil galleys etc making the problem worse. Especially if its got a broken ring. You don't wan't that to sieze up, because then you'll be buying a new shortblock!

365 See my opinion above on Rislone.

As far as Seafoam, if done right it can clean out the lines, but I wouldn't use it directly in the intake like some like to do. (or the oil) Just put it in the gas tank.

Also, drain all the old gas, and put some treated gas in (4-5 gal or so). Then I'd drain that too. That stinkin corn-y gas we have to use really turns to crap quickly, so its not good to burn that, or even send it thru the lines.

Change the fuel filter, and maybe again in 500 mi or so.

As far as oil in the plugs. Thats a good thing to do, as you wont be dry starting is as much as it would have been. Change the oil and plugs while you're there too.

Draining it again sounds like a good plan if there's some sort of cleaner in it. I'd rather not drop the tank unless it's necessary...especially since the fuel pump is in the tank.

380 In LA, most rioters had no idea who Rodney King was. Gonna have to disagree with you there. The tape, which was extremely disturbing to watch, was played over and over again. Plus, LAPD has a long, ugly history of brutality against blacks, not all of it unjustified, but highly unethical and ignoble. I backed the cops 100 percent on that one, and still do, but there was some karma in play for LAPD.

410 Dack, you should be able to drain it from the bottom of the tank. Most come with plugs. 11/16 or 17mm. appx.

The gas we are forced to use (thanks idiot Repubs) has that ethanol in it, so within about 6 months, its almost useless. Adding stabil before that happens should fix it. My dads car sat for almost 4 yrs, and we had put that in there. I was able to siphon off 2 gal at a time and burn it in my car with treatment and fresh gas to fill up. We didn't touch the last gal, as it was really nasty looking. But luckily the tank was still bright and shiny inside, so we didn't need to drop the tank and have it cleaned. Phew

But don't turn the car on, or it will suck that crap up into your pump. Or if you have to, find the fuse or relay that runs it, and pull it first, or the pump may clog.

416 Popular culture is overwhelmingly liberal-leftist.  So anyone growing up in the US is going to have that as a default position, unless something happens to them that makes them question any of the positions they "inherited" from pop culture.

Being a leftist requires absolutely no work.  Being anything else, like a conservative or a libertarian or what have you, requires that you think and try to find out why thinks are they way they are.  It's hard work and it's not really surprising that most people don't do it.

423 Bill, my granddad always told me never to use it, and he was a real mechanic, so I listened to him. Really the main problem with it is it masks any problems but only for a lil bit, so you could end up having the part fully break, and then you're into serious money to fix it, instead of just having to do rings, or a bearing.

It could jam the ring, and then send the piston thru the wall, and then you'd have to buy a whole new block. Or spin the bearing, and you're into a crank, and possibly block too.

So, its best to just have it looked at, if you want it to last at least.

The ones in the 1980s had drain plugs on the tank but I'm not sure this one does. I haven't looked yet but I will check that first as that would be far, far better than siphoning. It might also be possible to disconnect a line to the tank as I found out that one exists that is lower than the tank and that would allow draining. All of this has to be done carefully of course! My buddy, whom I have talked about numerous times, is very effective in debating libbos because he argues the extreme LEFT of even their positions. It causes them to short-circuit. He did it the other day with a group of his daughter's college roommates about abortion/contraception and at one point, some of these kids were so furious they clenched their fists and actually wanted to punch him! Kallisto, the Bronze Star is awarded for heroism in combat, but it's the lowest order of medal for that type of service.  Which is not to say it is not praiseworthy, just that there are many of them awarded.

If your friend mentions having been awarded the Bronze Star, you could say something like "I am sure your buddies/comrades/fellow soldiers (or whomever)  are  grateful for what you did, and I am proud of you for your service."

You might find a willingness  on his part to discuss it at that point.

That's awesome about 300K on the Honda. The Toyota has 113K. Those Japanese cars just seem to go and go. I'll only ever buy a Honda or a Toyota from now on frankly. American cars suck and have for years. Too expensive and they can't even get basic stuff right (My Dad has a Chevy S-10 that is a money pit. For example, the third door plastic handle broke at least three times before he replaced it with a metal one. Ridiculous shit that good design should've taken care of.).

Oh! And You Two, with the eye-rolling? Not. fucking. helpful. You can drop a rebuilt engine, rebuilt transmission, new starter, new CV joints, new brakes/struts, etc into the old Honda for less than 16.

535 Dack, its really just doing it. Get a Chiltons (then later the factory manual) and when you come to a part you can't get off, go get the proper tool to do it. (So you don't have to buy them all at once) Also, getting a decent air compressor and an impact gun and wrench really helped a ton!

I started young, and sometimes ruined a part or two, but it worked out in the long run by not having to pay a mechanic.

I also watch the car shows on Spike and Speed to pick up tips. You can watch most of the Spike shows on powerblock.com.

Having a large craftsman jack also really changed things.. and the creeper and stool too lol. Turning into a Sears ad)

I'm not trying to be mean, but wow.  We have fallen far as a culture and nation.  I can only hope we turn this country around.  The bigotry of low expectations is on parade in this trial,  Still nobody that matters has went live and exposed the man behind the curtain yet.  Our fantasy world goes on I guess....

777 So I'm playing a little online poker. A guy chastises another guy for raising with nothing, after he won. And says "you don't go all in on nothing". So I chime in, sometimes you do. Like if you really want the pot and the situation shows you might be able to get it. He calls me an asshole know it all. Next hand I'm dealt a 7-3. I bet 1000 (on nothing). Next guy bets 5000, everyone else drops out. Flop comes KK6. Guy puts in 10,000 so I figure he has a king. I call the bet with my 7-3. Up comes a Ace and bet 10k, he calls. Up comes another Ace, I go all in on my remaining 40k. He folds. I allow my hand to be seen and tell the other guy, "thats a time you go all in because you want the pot".

I can top that story.  Back when I was working as a mortgage broker I specialized in sub-prime mortgages.  Because the rates had fallen so much at that time I could usually save people $100 to $300 a month by refinancing even after I got my commission.  There was one guy who had terrible credit, really so bad that even the predatory mortgage lenders would be reluctant to write him a mortgage.  He was also paying over 12% on an adjustable rate mortgage.  Over several months I called him at least once a week to make sure that he was paying his bills on time.  It worked and his credit score improved to the point where I was about to get him a better mortgage.  Then I called him and the stupid fuck told me that he had just bought a boat.  He had tried before but his credit was so bad that nobody would finance it.  Now that his credit score was in the high 500s, they would allow him to take on several hundred dollars of additional monthly financial obligation.  If that shit for brains could have waited another month, he would probably have reduced his mortgage payment by as much as he increased his boat payment and wound up with the same obligations at the end of the month.

People tend to get sub-prime credit scores because they live sub-prime lives.  If you cannot deal with potential customers wasting a lot of your time, you should probably look for a different way to make a living.
