— Open Blogger If it's Saturday, it must mean another substitute ONTblogger.
First, let me explain the title of the post. I don't mean to imply that tmi3rd is really retarded. Just that his post was really retarded, sir.
And that he's super easy.
Let's face it, there were countless factual errros in his piece. For instance: None of us care about John Wayne Bobbit, except as a cautionary tale about falling asleep anywhere near his wife, or maybe, even your own. And he prostitutes his posts out to the highest bidder quicker and with more regularity than Sen. Rubio swaps hats on the amnesty train.
And you, like I, are probably wondering how a link to a blogsite run by a demented man can possibly find its onto the hallowed pages of AoSHQ.
Well, let's be clear about just who DDR is, and more importantly, what he does for fun and profit. On the surface, Walt appears to be a mild-mannered, self-described "freelance writer and photographer ". This is a ruse intended to lull you into a false sense of squishy security.
Indeed, the man is in deep with the horrifying underground baby-seal combat tournament scene.
As evidenced by his contribution to last night's ONT, a video of a man squeezing a baby seal (who likely lost too many times in "the icehole" to be of any value) as it shrieked in agony until it literally and repeatedly bursts into flames.
Need more evidence of just how dangerous this man's hobbies are?

Anyone remember when SNL was funny? To be honest, I haven't watched it in, what, over a decade now?
But this was the stuff that kept me up late, and, coincidentally, ties in with today's ONT.
It's amazing how funny someone can be if they aren't worried that the PC brownshirts will bust down their doors for offending the anointed victim group du jour.
Which is a great object lesson, since all I know about SNL recently is that it spins off very occasionally amusing and often openly bigoted hacks who are also full-time presidential (D) ass-kissers and credit-card whores.
For instance, this tit is Jimmy Fallon:

Who am I to opine on teh funneh though? I'm just the substitute. Making you laugh isn't a requirement. All we subs need is the ability to fling poo for the pure joy of seeing where it sticks. And if some happened to stick to tmi3rd, well, them's the collateral damages.
This ONT brought to you by Substitute Teachers Annonymous. Don't be that guy:
-That Guy
Oh yea... gotta do that "caturday" thing, yeah? I used to love cats. Then I bought a house that had landscaping that needed tending. I don't mean to start a longbow/crossbow-style debate, but let's face it: Kittehs are teh Kute, but cats are often just plumb evil.

ok, close.
fascinating article on Anthony Watts' website "wattsupwiththat.com" -- here's the tinyurl link
and here's the opening couple of paragraphs:
New paper finds that aging weather stations record much higher daytime temperatures, 1.63°C higher than new stations.
While we are all watching the heat wave developing in the US southwest, here is something to consider. Albedo on the surfaces of weather station shelters changes with time, something I and the volunteers have documented with the Surface Stations project. For example, hereÂ’s a aged weather station where the whitewash coating is coming off and the bare wood is becoming exposed:
Back in 2007, Pat Michaels wrote in an American Spectator column “Not so Hot“:
“Weather equipment is very high-maintenance. The standard temperature shelter is painted white. If the paint wears or discolors, the shelter absorbs more of the sun’s heat and the thermometer inside will read artificially high. But keeping temperature stations well painted probably isn’t the highest priority in a poor country.”
Now there is proof that changes in station shield surfaces affect temperature.
A paper published in the International Journal of Climatology finds that aging of the solar radiation screens on weather stations is causing a large positive bias in measured temperatures of 1.63°C, which by way of comparison is more than twice the global warming of 0.7°C recorded since the end of the Little Ice Age in 1850.
(there's more to read but it means the who global warming thing falls apart once again. King Barky will undoubedly not see this in the news.)

idiot alert. No, IDIOT alert:
Former U.S. President JimmyCarter says religious leaders, including those in Christianity and Islam, share the blame for mistreatment of women across the world.
The human rights activist said Friday religious authorities perpetuate misguided doctrines of male superiority, from the Catholic Church forbidding women from becoming priests to some African cultures mutilating the genitals of young girls.

Libs who pull this piece of rhetorical stupidity show they give no credence to the true horrors perpetuated against women by Islam.Muslims slice the clitorides and labia off screaming girls with bits of metal and glass with no anesthesia. Sometimes they close up the wound with thorns if sutures aren't available. It happens to 65% to 95% of women in Egypt. Such mutilated women will never know sexual pleasure and are subject to disease and to difficulty in childbirth. The fact that the second worst president in history makes an analogy between this and the work roles of women in the Catholic faith shows he doesn't give a shit about mutilated brown girls.

The hard core, yes, I agree, but they act as signposts for a far larger number of people whose main dedication seems to be to the idea of not thinking too hard. If only the "crusade" types had voted for Teh One, we would not be having this...situation.
And yet, they control "cool." How do we get ourselves some of that "controlling cool" thing?

I do so love that the GOP is solely to blame for the weaponized race issue though.
The African-American community sold itself to the left twice.
The Great Depression took our 80% vote share from them down to 40ish, then LBJ slowly bled it out.
PJ also omits the willful bias in the academy and the media.
PJ I spoke that we were aiding Muslim illegal immigrants in Bosnia/Kosovo where were you?
PJ are you using your pages to attack Obama's use of US might again in the service of Islam?
Instead of wallowing PJ or asking Obama to help you Carbon Monoxide poison the movement why don't you hold the bastards on the hill to task?

PJ's piece was from 2008 "we's doomed!"
We've been doomed since arguably 2006 Linc.
My beef with PJ such as it is is he needs to be pushing hard against the types of actions we're in that he landed blows on Clinton on in "Give War a Chance."
Read his piece it's a rebuttal and satire of it.
He was emoing out pretty hard.

Dairy Queen also makes great cheeseburgers. I love Dairy Queen but I know of only one here in NoVA (Arlington somewhere). When I head up to PA to visit the family and golf (mostly golf) I go to DQ alot. There seems to be one in every town there.

That will forever be my definition of a non-human: "If your child was dying in a hospital, would you be able to put aside your selfishness enough to actually ACCEPT THE CARD of your ex's LAWYER, so that YOUR LAWYER could call YOUR EX'S LAWYER, so your EX'S LAWYER can tell your ex that your child is dying in the hospital? No? Okay, you're not a human. I can only assume you're some kind of bipedal gingivitis."

That's why I've never liked female comedians. ALL of their humor is sex-based. That was the refreshing thing about Ellen DeGeneres when she did standup. Probably because she was a lesbian, but her routine was completely devoid of sex jokes. She was actually FUNNY.
Then she went all "Hey, I'm out of the closet!" and got boring.

Well, it was a pleasurable business. Three of 'em came into our yard- usually I would let the dog chase them off, but he's getting kind of old. Two of them ran right off, but the third turned and stared me down, drooling like that seal up top, with the same look in its eyes. I almost turned tail, but manned up and stood my ground, revving the engine a couple of times. I felt like Cro-cow-dile Dundee!

Approximately 20 people a year are killed by cows. When you look into those big, brown, bovine eyes you are staring into the soul of a slow-witted COLD BLOODED KILLER.
...
Of course, a lot of those deaths are caused by cows falling over cliffs and crushing people below, because cows aren't all that bright.

i went to att and was talking to the salesman. he had blackberrys - q and z - laying beside an iphone and a galaxy. he was trying to sell me the blackberry for the same price as the other two. i love blackerries but there was no way I could bring myself to pay the same for the blackberry as the other two.
it was like having to choose between michelle obama and carla bruni; I love Americans and I hate the french but effin a just look at them.
yes I know blackberry is canadian.

UWP,
What happened to the two kids that you raised?
In other news, I attended the MAGPUL rally today in Denver. Mindy was a sweetheart, as always. The band was fun, there was beer for sale, and a couple of employees from the local strip club were wandering around handing out passes. So in summary: guns, beer, rock and roll, and titties. All that was missing were the cigars.

Animals can be categorized thusly:
1. Those that don't want to kill you, and don't
2. Those that don't want to kill you, but could.
3. Those that want to kill you, but can't.
4. Those that want to kill you and will.
The first category is the only kind I will let into my house.

most cows are really dangerous! they are big, fast, and some are ill tempered to boot. one could kill you just by the person in question getting inattentive about where they were standing and the cow getting mildly startled. then of course there is malice. I have seen some longhorn steers and spanish bulls full of evil malice and fast as racehorses over short distance.

You know, we aren't like the Americans...we don't have any idealism in our culture...a lot of the time, I wish we did have...but you guys need to understand something about us, because you think we will take shit forever...so I'm going to explain our character to you:
- I never want to kill somebody
- If somebody takes away my means of life for their own selfish purposes, or especially from my family, I will sacrifice my life to kill them, and I will do it with glee and a song in my heart, because life here is nothing but a burden and I would be happy to die for a cause I believe in, which there are precious damn few.
...that is all you need to understand about us.

I think the original quote is actually "These are my favorite! Crunchy on the outside, chewy on the inside."
I also had a few T-shirts, my favorite was the cow grilling hamburgers with other cows looking on, the caption, "You're sick Jesse! Sick, sick, sick!" In the bottom corner, you could see the cow eating a hamburger with the thought bubble "Tastes like chicken."

Wanna see something MILITANT?
Behold the Mexican national anthem, which is pretty hardcore for a country which has never won a war:
Mexicans, at the cry of battle
lend your swords and bridle;
and let the earth tremble at its center
upon the roar of the cannon.
Your forehead shall be girded, oh fatherland, with olive garlands
by the divine archangel of peace,
For in heaven your eternal destiny
has been written by the hand of God.
But should a foreign enemy
Profane your land with his sole,
Think, beloved fatherland, that heaven
gave you a soldier in each son.
CHORUS
II
War, war without truce against who would attempt
to blemish the honor of the fatherland!
War, war! The patriotic banners
saturate in waves of blood.
War, war! On the mount, in the vale
The terrifying cannon thunder
and the echoes nobly resound
to the cries of union! liberty!
CHORUS
III
Fatherland, before your children become unarmed
Beneath the yoke their necks in sway,
May your countryside be watered with blood,
On blood their feet trample.
And may your temples, palaces and towers
crumble in horrid crash,
and their ruins exist saying:
The fatherland was made of one thousand heroes here.
CHORUS
IV
Fatherland, fatherland, your children swear
to exhale their breath in your cause,
If the bugle in its belligerent tone
should call upon them to struggle with bravery.
For you the olive garlands!
For them a memory of glory!
For you a laurel of victory!
For them a tomb of honor!

First of all, neocons are not conservatives.
They're pre-Carter Libs with a patriot streak. My own dad was one for awhile; he used to be a liberal until the government started saying that all the money was theirs, then he voted for Reagan. But other than being for muscular policy and 'keep yo hands off my money' he didn't really change his politics. My mother, the same.
In other words, most 'conservatives' of the type PJ is getting all up in arms about are just pre/post Liberals. Maybe they will become more conservative over time, but it will not be enough, fast enough. It's great if by the time he's 90 the guy supports traditional marriage, is pro-life, wants a flat tax, owns 3 guns, etc. But if when he's 35 his feeling about any of those issues is at all ambivalent, it's too little, too late.
'conservatism with age' is just buyer's remorse. I know some of these people, and I know that their conservatism is purely reactionary, which means it is unstructured and undisciplined, it has no meta-politic. So maybe they come out against abortion because someone they know got sterilized by having two abortions. Maybe they come out against government regulations because they actually try to start a business in MD. So on, so on.
The argument about freedom he's trying to make is bunkum. Socialism looks like freedom for a lot of people, doesn't it? Maybe they look at 'work hard and maybe do well' freedom and 'be lazy and get taken care of' freedom and human nature, especially that of modern men who don't know their neighbor from their buttcrack, inclines towards the path of least resistance.

If he's right, we would have won if we all just became pro-abortion fiscal conservatives! Because fiscal conservatism, obviously, is real conservatism that sells.
Underestimating the latent social envy of the common man is a dangerous game PJ.
Socialism 'works' only in that people want it and vote for it because of envy. Beyond that, obviously, it doesn't work. There's an analogy here for the thing you always get because it seems like a good idea at the time, but it totally wrecks you and you can't remember that until you get wrecked. That's socialism in democracy.

The difference being that there are times when even the most dyed-in-the-wool pro-life person would concede that abortion may sadly be necessary -- e.g. during a 1-year course of treatment during which the infant has an 80% chance of death or disfigurement and the mother would not be expected to survive pregnancy (conception at the onset of Ebola, or some similar horror).
Whereas a government that told you not to rob banks would certainly not tell you that you should.....since it has a fully staffed department of unionized Federal workers whose job it is to loot banks.

But here is a really disquieting bit of datum - $553.8 million contract to Rosoboronexport for 30 Mi-17 helicopters on June 16, 2013. Rosoboronexport is an agency of the Russian government, which also provides military weaponry to the Assad regime in Syria.

True. I believe all they can get from the port is acceleration and braking habits (are you an aggressive driver?) and maybe that you don't change your oil often enough. It's not like they get GPS or video.

To put my response another way -- and stay a bit less silly about it -- there are laws about choices between social order and anarchy and laws about things that are preferences, albeit solidly-anchored ones. Both flavors come in serious and significant/trivial but enforceable subflavors.
As an example, driving on the right side of the road is not an earthshattering moral dilemma -- and, in fact, is somewhat arbitrary -- but is a serious and significant contribution to social order, as anyone who has encountered a wrong-way driver knows. Abortion, by contrast, is a moral, ethical, theological, and demographic bag o' worms....but does not directly change anything in the social order beyond the child's future.
Robbing a bank is more like driving a car -- reasonably subject to the government's police power because it keeps the social order running -- than restrictions on abortion -- which is a very touchy use of the government's police power because the effects are more personal than societal.
And it's not like we haven't seen the hand of government on both sides of the scale -- with forced sterilizations in the US ("The United States was the first country to concertedly undertake compulsory sterilization programs for the purpose of eugenics. The heads of the program were avid believers in eugenics and frequently argued for their program. It was shut down due to ethical problems. The principal targets of the American program were the mentally retarded and the mentally ill, but also targeted under many state laws were the deaf, the blind, people with epilepsy, and the physically deformed."), and natalism in Romania ("Concerns over aging populace resulted in reproductive freedoms being severely restricted. Wishing to increase the birth rate, in 1966, Ceauşescu promulgated the decree 770 restricting abortion and contraception: only women over the age of 45 who had at least four children were eligible for either; in 1989, the number was increased to five children.[14] Mandatory gynecological revisions and penalisations against unmarried people and childless couples[clarification needed] completed the natalist measures.")

Its really easy to point out the idiocy of the original claim though. Any government that tells you its legal to have an abortion can force you to have one. Any government that tells you you can't drive over 65, can tell you that you must drive over 65.
No matter what the law is there could always be an inverse law.

Whereas I'm taking this to a different place -- a government that has the right to force you one way on a moral choice that could be reasonably taken another whilst maintaining social order....might just as unreasonably force you to choose the other way on the same moral choice. Social order isn't damaged either way, they're just jerkin' people around.
Admittedly, it's a rough paraphrase to what your friend actually said -- but, y'know.....moron.

But what is really insane is the $18.3 million price tag for each PC-12 COIN turbo-prop the US is selling to Afghanistan. A prop plane. But this COIN program is also mired in controversy since Hawker Beechcraft proposed an attack version of their T-6 Texan II. When Sierra/Embraer won the contract with the A-29B, Hawker Beechcraft filed a complaint with the GAO and then later sued when the GAO ruled against them. Which caused the whole contract to be canceled until Embraer won a new contract that has resulted in these aircraft. Well it used to be a $355 million contract but now only $219 million. 12 planes instead of 20.
Well I think that is too darn pricey. And then I look at Iraq who is paying $46 million per F-16 for its follow on order of 18 F-16s. Geez.

Interior metal piping (water/gas/etc) needs to be "bonded" (ie. lands on the panel ground) with a wire sized to the highest amperage circuit that might conceivably ever short against it. Normally, a 10ga is sufficient unless there's a heavy feeder to a subpanel close to the metal pipe...then you'd go up to the gnd wire size for that feeder.
Metal piping coming through from the EXTERIOR and penetrates to the interior that has at least 10' of earth contact MUST become part of the premise grounding system -- i.e. those pipes must be tied in with any ground rods, concrete encased electrodes, ground plates, etc.
I had a building once with 6 freaking metal pipes making basement penetration that I knew were at least 10' long. All 6 got tied together with 2 ground rods and into the panel.
So...that wire to the boiler piping is necessary as a "bond", but its NOT considered part of the service's grounding electrode system.
IOW - don't fuck with it, it needs to be there.
If the crib has cast iron drain pipes anywhere, consider bonding them too. My uncle was getting shocked in his shower some years ago. When I bonded the cast iron drains, the shocks went away. Probably some bad UF or his electric fence was causing it, but the bond makes everything equipotential eliminating any voltage deltas

The further apart they are, and the more of them there are, the more effective they'll be, its just a bit more wire. If there's an area of lawn that's damper than most (gutter outlet areas, something under the edge of a roof valley, etc), that's the best place to locate them.
If you use exothermic weld "shots" for the rod/wire connection rather than acorn clamps, the inspector will be impressed...and the welds never loosen up.
Pro-tip for driving rods -- soak the area with water, before and during pounding one in. The water acts like a lubricant. If the ground is soft enough, you can twirl the rod like a fire-starting stick and it'll slide right in.

Is there any reason, besides (minimal) cost, to not put EVERYTHING in subpanels? As in, drop from utility to meter, several big breakers going to subpanels, then the entire house gets wired to the relevant subpanels?
Truth be told, I worry about working in the main box, lest I stumble into something and go up in a puff of smoke like some Star Trek redshirt caught in a phaser beam, but have no problem doing home-runs to subs that I can turn completely off.
I vaguely recall that the rules are different on grounds, though.

Pro-tip for driving rods -- soak the area with water, before and during pounding one in. The water acts like a lubricant. If the ground is soft enough, you can twirl the rod like a fire-starting stick and it'll slide right in.

Good advice in many situations.

Nope. That's my preferred design approach...and its actually faster to install than dragging ladders back and forth a million times all over the house. Only a small handful of big ones, than a bunch of small short ones to the areas served.
It also makes additions a lot easier if you get big enough subs that they aren't stuffed. Shoot a spare 3/4" or 1" EMT up into the attic/basement into a blank 6" square e-box and you can add new circuits with ease.
All single phase sub panels MUST be 4-wire feed (phase/phase/neutral/gnd). People are fond of cheating and running a 3-wire SE cable and tying the sub's neutral/gnd together, but that's illegal and will fail an inspection. Do NOT use the panel neutral bonding screw or bonding strap on a subpanel. Gnd must be isolated from neutral

If you'd been in Denver to get the freebie from Magpul, you will probably suffer in the coming years under the government that ran them out of state. It'd be far better to live wherever Magpul goes.

Does anyone know how to transfer images onto tile and actually look good?
I don't want contact paper - decal - ish look, but rather a heat transfer just the image lines like that glitter paper that goes thru a laser printer for color highlights on certificate.
Can't run a window sill tile thru a laser print, or I can I?
Posted by: Adriane ... at June 30, 2013 03:08 AM (Jv4FA)
At what stage in the life of the tile are you trying to put the image on? Raw clay? Pre-fire? Glazed? Post-fire? Engraved? After installation?

I'm going to have to clarify with the guys that put my kitchen subpanel in (which is ok, they're neighbors). I had thought that they casually said that the ground in the sub tied back to a screw in the main that wasn't exactly the big ground for everything, but would suffice for a local ground.....and felt uneasy. But everything passed inspection and the guys have a really good rep around here. And, BTW, I've got both phases at my sub.
They may well have said that the neutral in the sub is tied back to a screw in the main that isn't the big ground for everything, but I was distracted by something else.

Does this also make sense when wiring with an emergency genset or alternative power to isolate key circuits?
Is ok to run 24VDC alongside AC, or does that get the codeguys upset?

Painting tile by hand is last option.
I want to transfer the music and lyrics to "Here Comes to Sun" a bar at a time to some - probably glazed window sill tile (bull nose) from Home Depot.
The window is a west facing window, hence the joke.

Purp's good -- the water slide thingie sounds like a serious possibility.
A few things -- shouldn't "Here Comes the Sun" be on Eastward facing tile? Second, what sort of environment is it in? Will it need to be water repellant/resistant? UV? Third, what level of detail are you looking for? Fourth, what's your cost/benefit tradeoff [I've lived in Silicon Valley long enough to know -- if you founded a company and are a multi-millionaire and just want something a certain way, goddammit!......then you can easily find someone to make it so, but it'll cost.

Third, what level of detail are you looking for?
Prolly scan a score from a music store and expand to 1 bar - 1 tile...
Fourth, what's your cost/benefit tradeoff [I've lived in Silicon Valley long enough to know -- if you founded a company and are a multi-millionaire and just want something a certain way, goddammit! ...... then you can easily find someone to make it so, but it'll cost.]

Landing a subpanel ground wire on one of the main panel ground bars is fine. It could even be bolted to the metal case or landed on lug bolted to the case (scrape any paint off first, to get metal-metal connection)

Is ok to run 24VDC alongside AC, or does that get the codeguys upset?
You could do a critical circuits subpanel, then have the feeder for that be among the transfer switch box's breaker set that gets flipped from gen/poco.
You don't want to be mixing low voltage DC and AC in the same conduit or wall box. They can be mixed in a wall box, BUT it must be one of the special ones with an insulated physical divider plate between VL and AC sections.
As a practical matter, to reduce noise you want to keep LVDC away from AC and when they must physically cross paths, do it at a 90 degree angle.
If you want to do a classy job, the LVDC/ CATV/LAN can be run through EMT which will cut noise vulnerability considerably if its near Romex or stuff piped in PVC. If the EMT runs with LV are longish, ground them.
The NEC allows for ungrounded "short" lengths of ENT for "physical protection"
Shooting phone/lan across an attic through EMT is a joy compared to the rats nest you usually see...
Posted by: Purp[/i][/b][/u][/s] at June 30, 2013 12:04 AM (/gHaE)
oops should be "short" lengths of EMT
ENT is nonmetallic "smurf tube" that ain't worth shit for EMI

In my humble experience, EVERYTHING is a rats nest, especially anything not inspected. Alarms, video, data, phone, low voltage, HVAC ductwork, and CATV are all bandaids on bandaids on bandaids on halfassed.

Morning,
"Note to self,"
MAP Gas ineffective for blowing up Fire-Ant mounds.
I will resume trials using combinations of Propane/Acetylene as test mixture 286-B
AND, for the 1st time, Sodium Phosphorus/Noz as test mixture 415-A. Of note: Test mixture 415-A requires 72 hr. pre-test notification to all EMS Agencies within a 3 mile radius and monitoring by the A.Q.M.D and a certified P.E.T.A observer on site during the test.
I am, thru my data overlays and chemical specific computer generated effects modeling, very excited about 415-A.
I think I have a wiener...........

Seems they have a rather vicious issue with Fire-Aunts in the Mayor's Office.
Why, in the Mayor's office alone, there is the biggest FIRE-AUNT Mound in the history of the city!!!
I do hope 415-A lives up to my projected potential.....

Exactly why i've spent so much time under the house. That's what brought up my original question. I could make a fortune just cleaning up after the Jacklegs that "worked" on my block.
Posted by: shredded chi at June 30, 2013 04:39 AM (CEkb/)
I recently converted from Comcast to AT&T U-Verse.....and the installer, elated to not have to crawl under the house a zillion times (because most things have been pre-labeled), sat down and labeled the crap out of everything he did. It's Giuliani's "broken-window theory" writ small. If 90% of your house is labeled, and you take a personal approach with new workers, they tend to label their shit.
Posted by: cthulhu at June 30, 2013 12:47 AM (T1005)
You should also look at how workers "labeled their shit" in the time of Mesopotamia.....

Yet, I am haunted now, I am walking the beaches of Normandy in 1995, with my 2 sons who are most content to splash amongst the tide pools, (children they are) and unaware of what happened on this place....I, on the other hand have absorbed all the history of this place, have read EVERY text and story about this historic patch of ground and am in awe that I am privileged to be in this very place where such history happened. The Sun is setting...I take a picture of my shoe print on Omaha beach, my boys want to play in the tide pools...for a little while longer...children love to play in water........
