Saudi National Suspected in Bombing Smelled of Gunpowder When Interviewed by Police?
— Ace

So claims a New York Post source. This is the first tangible bit of evidence I've heard against him.

The police took various bits of possible evidence from the man's Revere apartment.

Marcus Worthington, 24, a law student who lives in a neighboring building, said he was told by an official wearing an ATF jacket that residents were “safe now.”

Worthington said officials told him they were responding to a tip about one of the apartments.

"He said that they were investigating a tip about a dangerous device in one of the apartments. I did ask him if it was a bomb or something, but he wouldn't answer."

I felt required to quote that as it seems highly suggestive, but I'm actually quoting it because it's not, but made to seem that way. Consider what a cop telling you "you're safe now" means-- it's just a general reassurance. It means "you're fine." It doesn't mean, as I think is being implied, "You're safe... now."

As for the latter bit, about asking if the cop had found a bomb and the cop not answering: This means even less. Why would the investigator answer? Investigator do answer sometimes, but they're not supposed to, not when it's about evidence concerning a very high-profile crime. In fact, the one situation I could see an investigator answering is if it were actually a bomb. In that case cops would say "Yes we think it's a bomb" and then begin evacuating people, in case there were more.

But this bit of nothing-trumped-up-into-something aside, there is some reason for suspecting this guy:

...

At the hospital, investigators seized the manÂ’s clothes to examine whether they held any evidence that he was behind the attack. The law-enforcement sources also told The Post that the man was not free to leave the medical center.

...

FBI investigators leaving the apartment building following a raid of the potential suspect's home.

As of last night, investigators had not yet directly asked the man whether he had set off the bombs. But they had asked him general questions, such as what he was doing in the area.

The potential suspect told police he had dinner Sunday night near BostonÂ’s Prudential Center, about half a mile from the blast site, the sources said.

He also said that he went to the Copley Square area yesterday to witness the finish of the race.

The sources said that, after the man was grabbed by police, he smelled of gunpowder and declared, “I thought there would be a second bomb.”

He also asked: “Did anyone die?”

As far as "smelled of gunpowder:" That's sort of suggestive but I do wonder-- wouldn't must people near the blast smell of gunpowder? (Assuming it was a gunpowder-based explosive.) People smell of gunpowder after firing guns; the cloud of gunpowder from a fired bullet gets into their skin and clothes. If a gunpowder-based bomb blew up, wouldn't a big cloud of gunpowder smoke get into the clothes and skin of anyone nearby or downwind?

"I thought there would be a second bomb" seems more suggestive. Although anyone can speculate something like that.

My skepticism is present here for two reasons: 1, I think skepticism is useful as a general matter, and 2, this just feels too easy to me. It feels like we should have had to work harder and longer to find this guy. (Though commenters remind me we rolled up Timothy McVeigh very quickly.)

Odd.  Gunpowder by itself doesn't smell all that strong, certainly not on a par that would be obvious to most people - including me.  So I'm with Ace, that if he smelled of gunpowder at all it would be a consequence of being nearby when a fucking bomb went off.

You know, smelling like *burned* gunpowder.

So either he did some offsite blowing up of stuff, or he was at that site when it blew up. Since we know he was at the site when it blew up, it stands to reason he'd smell like the smoke of burned gunpowder.

137 Way too much speculation on this entire thing.

First, the contra-intellectual;

Anti-Tax Protester? So by randomly blowing up his fellow taxpayers. who also largely hate the IRS- he's...furthering his cause? Really???

Fail.

My queries;

The bomb type is a little puzzling. If it was black powder, which it appeared to be from the black smoke, it's not a signature terrorist method. Buying black-powder attracts more attention than some of the other potential materials. But it is somewhat more compact and relatively unsophisticated.

The suspect if connected, is very close to the explosion. Which indicates he is probably also a novice. Ultimately, if he's involved it's the "lone-wolf" LE feared all along. Someone radically inspired, but acting alone.

Wouldn't that be something with the immigration talk in Congress? Yes, we need more of these skilled workers on H1-B Visas. No wait, more Foreign Student Visas to help supplement our society with jobs American's won't do. Like terrorism.

Wonderful.

181 Pressure cookers?

Loose black powder doesn't explode, it just burns.  To get an explosion it needs to be contained in a pressure vessel of some sort- a closed pipe, rifle chamber, or in this case a pressure cooker.

Smokeless powder needs to build to higher pressure before it'll explode, black powder not as much.

But on Tuesday morning, one law enforcement official said investigators had determined that the man, who was injured in the blast and was questioned at the hospital, was not involved in the attack."

Hello everyone from Sydney at 2.23 Wednesday morning...insomnia YAY!

The Boston Marathon is a true international event - it was on telly here on cable

153 Aussies were amongst the runners - all safe as well as their friends and rellies who were here with them

I've forgotten the secret coded way to link to stories but if any of you want to be cheered up by a nice doggie helps save owner story just go to the Daily Telegraph (Sydney) site via Bing and read about the kelpie who stayed with his owner for 4 days at a crash site

Love the pizza gifts for hospital staff - being an RN I know I always appreciated those kinds of gifts when I worked in a hospital

198 182 Pressure cookers? Loose black powder doesn't explode, it just burns. To get an explosion it needs to be contained in a pressure vessel of some sort- a closed pipe, rifle chamber, or in this case a pressure cooker. 211 >>>As far as "smelled of gunpowder:" That's sort of suggestive but I do wonder-- wouldn't must people near the blast smell of gunpowder?

Ok, I do work with propellents so I'll spell it out.

Smokeless powder, what most people are referring to when they generically say "gunpowder" has virtually no odor prior to ignition, and only a mild odor after ignition. Not something you can pick up from someone's clothes and if you did, it meant they were exposed to burnt, not unburnt powder. It is also slow burning (relatively) so isn't used often to attempt to make explosives.

Black powder, commonly used to fire muzzle loaders, is very fast burning and has a distinctive odor of sulfur prior to burning and a horrendous odor of sulfur after burning. It creates large clouds of rotten egg smelling white smoke when burned that will permeate everything it comes into contact with. Simply having incidental contact with unburned black powder is not enough to impart a detectable odor. You would have to spill it on you. Which really means you are living life very dangerously.

Saying someone "smells" of gunpowder would mean most certainly that...

a. Black powder was used
b. Person so mentioned got caught in the smoke cloud.

The only real evidence pertaining to the explosive will be unburned powder detected someplace like in his apartment.

Yeah, I've wondered about a lot of these details also.

Reports say the guy is 'burned' or 'badly burned'. If he were that close to the blast, does he not also  have shrapnel wounds? Something doesn't add up here.

But just for the hell of it, let's say you are very close to the blast. You are burned, shocked, run away (total human reaction, when on fire, run). You get tackled. Somewhere along the line a cop asks you some questions. You thought there was another explosion besides the one that went off next to you, and you want to know if anyone was killed.

Harmless in and of itself. But there are soooo many details that remain unanswered that it's impossible to get any clear idea of what really happened.

Posted by: HH at April 16, 2013 08:33 AM (XXwdv)

239 >>>Pressure cookers?

That would make since for a gunpowder of some sort.
Gunpowder is considered a "low explosive" meaning that the gas producing reaction occurs in tandem with the flame front, not the shock wave front. These types of explosives will not "explode" unless they are confined they just burn very rapidly.

269 I picture erg as a Bob Beckel type. Fat, stupid, drunk always shooting off his big uneducated mouth

I always picture him as looking something like the Gollum in Lord of the Rings, but with duller teeth.

271 If the Saudi angle holds (and it will - any homegrown "anti-tax terrorist" would've targeted an IRS office or similar place), I wonder how many of Obama's agenda items are undercut by this asshole: 1) Student visa? Did he overstay? Was he properly vetted before being allowed in? 2) Is he here illegally? 3) How would gun control have stopped the act of terror? Answer: it wouldn't. 4) Will Obama/Reid try to ram the gun control and immigration bills through over the next few days before this guy's info is released, esp. if he's here illegally or overstayed his visa?

272 its gonna take some time to tie this to a tea partier but at least the Saudi government is "helping" us with the "investigation"

273 250 szasz you know the popular point of critical incompetency is applied against Muslims -- whether African, Arabian Peninsula, all regions east of Greece, and Pakistan/India, or immigrants to the Americas. And the French "learned" the hard way, without learning. Ethnic sense of superiority has no borders.

274 So that DHS memo says that the Times Square bomber had a pressure cooker bomb with 120 firecrackers in it.

275 222 How did they detonate that? Posted by: tasker at April 16, 2013 12:27 PM (r2PLg) CBS reports our Saudi student has burns on his hands. If (big if) thats him, my guess is simple fuse like a firework. Posted by: Jollyroger at April 16, 2013 12:31 PM (t06LC) We don't know. Could've been as simple as a lit fuse, might have been by remote. Jihadis in Afghanistan were known to use parts from toy remote controlled cars to build IEDs. Posted by: Hollowpoint at April 16, 2013 12:33 PM (SY2Kh) ********** Got it. Hell first I am hearing about the burnt hands.

282 take a stove top 1 gallon hula dancer style pressure cooker...

Wha?  What does a hula dancer have to do with a pressure cooker?  Does it have a part on top that waggles back and forth?  (Boom...phrasing!)

The ones I've seen have a pressure release valve, and sometimes a gauge.

Mohammed, his roommate of two months, said this burnt hand guy is "clean and quiet." We must, we must, believe him! (Or, in my Redneck Queen's mind, nope).

Plane stopped at Logan today due to two Arabs talking' a-rab. They did not want to "offend" marathoners on plane. Something tells me that Boston is not falling for the "right-wingers" to blame for this.

Huh. Do those Occupy types pay taxes....you know, those guys who wanted to blow up a bridge last summer (I think. Not sure what year this is anymore).

286 Oh, that smell of gunpowder thing.  It's potassium nitrate.  A common mistake because most folks smell that way after they've made a pact with the devil.

287 From what I read last night...the reported apartment the cops searched was of a 34 yr old Moroccan guy named Mounir Rhoulam of 364 Ocean Avenue, Apt, 209.  Not the Saudi (unless they are roommates?).  He's been in trouble before for abuse.  So not completely sure if the police were taking bags out of his apartment regarding the Boston bombing or not.
