Scenes From the Ruling Class
— Ace

Trent Lott, now working at a "powerhouse law and lobbying firm," lays it out for you.

Regarding the Shutdown, Lott says of Boehner and Co.:

"They've made their point," Lott huffed. "It's time to say enough and move on." Referring to the die-hard tea partiers in the House Republican caucus, he added, "These new guys don't care about making things work."

...

I asked Lott if his old GOP pals still serving in the Senate have lost control of their party. How do they feel about that? I inquired. Lott shook his head: "That Ted Cruz. They have to teach him something or cut his legs out from under him."

Cut his legs out? Yeah, Lott replied with a chuckle. He noted that when he was in the House in the 1980s he mounted a campaign against a fellow Republican who had challenged him for a leadership post. "Took me two years," he recalled. "But I got him. And he was out of the House." Recalling his vindictiveness and hardball politics, Lott chuckled once more. "Call me if you want more red meat," he said, before heading toward the car waiting for him.

There is an old saying that every profession is a conspiracy against the laity. It's quite true.

It's time to kick the professionals out of politics -- at least the elective offices.

We cannot endure a government which is so determined to rule against the wishes of the people.

8 Term limits. 150% taxation rate on those going to work for a lobbying firm for five years after leaving a government position. Every single elected official gets a primary challenger. Five year limitation on working for a federal agency (military is not a federal agency for purposes of this rule). That's off the top of my head.

9 There are four completely distinct and separate critiques of ObamaCare, and as of today they're all getting blurred and jumbled together. This is pitiful and disastrous messaging, because the four critiques are not similar to each other and more importantly they to some degree cancel each other out -- and the Low Information Voters will not be able to sort the critiques out, and the end result is an ineffective mishmash of criticisms that have no effective punch because we'e arguing four mutually negating points at once. Consider the four critiques: 1. The original (and correct) critique of ObamaCare is that, regardless of whether or not it benefits some individuals and regardless of whether or not millions of Americans end up getting "free" health care, the entire ACA system will eventually destroy the American economy overall. It will lead to bankruptcy or at a minimum greatly increased indebtedness, causing ruination for everyone in the long run. 2. The system, whether or not it leads to cheaper healthcare for some people, will inevitably leads to an increased totalitarian dependency state, with the government aware of your every life detail, and having undue control over our daily existence. 3. Totally aside from critiques 1 and 2, a new critique has arisen in recent weeks that ObamaCare "won't work" in that it won't actually save most people any money or convenience; in fact, it seems to set to makes things MORE expensive and MORE inconvenient for a substantial majority of people forced to participate in it. This also is true. 4. And lastly, the critique of the moment is that ObamaCare is not currently being -- and likely will not be in the future -- seamlessly implemented, so that people can't even get their spiffy new health insurance anyway. This argument may be true at the moment, but embedded in it is the implication that ObamaCare is something desirable and worth getting, and that the government is failing us by not doling out our freebies in an efficient or competent way. Now, while of these anti-ObamaCare arguments may be true in and of themselves, there is no clear and distinct messaging about them as separate arguments, and instead everything is blurring together. Which ends up negating the effect of ALL of the arguments in the chaos of the media whirlwind.

30 Trent Lott is a good example of a true politico. He was always in it for the money, power, and status. If he'd been born in a blue state, he'd have been a Democrat. He has no principles, just a desire for wealth, power, and status. Scum like Lott are the norm, sadly. Which is why you have to make it attractive for men like him to do your bidding. Technology has allowed the people of this country to be up to date practically to the second when something like this is attempted in Washington now. Cruz never would have won the primary in Trent Lott's day but technology has allowed for the grassroots to consolidate support and power in a way that is way beyond Lott, McCain, Graham and the others now.

Their time has passed and its likely that the rest of his buddies will join him on the sidelines come 2014/16.

52 The original 1996 Contract With America was one of the first real innovations in conservative politics, and conservative-driven political reform, in more than a decade.

Make congressional lawmakers subject to the same laws as ordinary citizens are in the rest of the country? Brilliant. And the polling reflected that. Such provisions were popular even across party lines. Lots of old time Reagan Democrats liked that kind of talk.

Then the momentum got frittered away. And reform failed.

Part of it was a fuckup on the part of the House leadership. Gingrich and Livingstone failed to realize that they could not mount an impeachment push, on the basis of what the public was going to inaccurately parse as a matter of a private adulterous liaison, while themselves having personal lives that were not simon-pure. A major miscalculation.

But a lot of the rest of the failure of conservative reform in that era goes directly to genial old corruptocrats like Trent Lott up in the Senate. Who never were too keen on these new bomb-throwing revolutionaries down in the House. Why, if too many of those bombs were to go off, the flow of pork might be interrupted. And no one would ever want that. Let's just "cut their legs out from under them" and get back to the friendly business of mulcting the public, shall we?

68 Anyone know enough about the House Minority Whip elections of the 80s to be able to tell who the House member is that Lott is referring to? Lott spent the 80s as the Minority Whip to Bob Michell before leaving to take John Stennis' Senate seat. He was eventually replaced by Dick Cheney, and by Gingrich after Cheney became SecDef, so there's only about an 8-10 year window to dig through. I'm curious as to whether they ended up losing a seat just so he could cut the nuts off a guy who challenged him.

90 Reality is, sadly, that any ruling coalition will be mostly made up of Trent Lott types because they are effective at rising to power. It's exactly their amoral ambition that lets them rise so high. So they system has to somehow harness that power for good instead of evil. US constitution was pretty good at that for a while.

95 51 Forgive my ignorance (because I have to be ignorant to something the rest of you know), but just what do these Cruz haters hate about him so much? --- Snarky answers aside, I can't figure it out. Look, I think it takes all kinds to make a coalition and communicate a message, whether it be in media talking heads or as politicians. We've had some people who have rallied conservatives on specific issues -- some of those folks are, to be generous, a little one-dimensional in their appeal or limited in their abilities or flawed in some way. (I'd put Michele Bachmann in that category, but YMMV.) But Ted Cruz, thus far anyway, seems to have very few down sides, either in substance or style. So even if you disagree with his approach on this issue, there is no benefit to the GOP that I can see to destroying him. It's not so much that you have to love Ted Cruz to pass my purity test, but if you paint him as a wacko bird or hobbit or liar, then I'm writing you off.

111 Having worked (briefly) in the government (at the city level and as an intern in the US Senate) and having run my own business for many years, the most striking thing about the government is the attitude toward money. In a private company, the mindset is always to maximize revenue and minimize costs without harming service. That mindset pervades every decision. In the government, those considerations are not in the top 25. In fact, cost usually isn't a concern at all. If $25,000 is budgeted for a project and it can get done for $10,000; you can be sure $25,000 will be spent. Go along to get along must end and the current Trent Lotts must be retired. Unfortunately, that is a majority of the current Republican caucus.

Democrats hate him because he's a class traitor. He picked up the Ivy League education which is traditionally one of their turnstiles to attaining huge power in the institutional left, and turned his back on the whole rotten edifice instead of joining it.

Republicans hate him because he's a class traitor to them, too. His other option in life was to do what "mainstream" Republicans have long since accustomed themselves to doing, which is stealing what leftovers they can for themselves off of the banquiet table of the leviathan State, without ever seriously challenging any of its underlying premises or seriously fighting the other party. Cruz rejected them and all their works.

The President is now playing games. He knows full well he could fund all that stuff, but instead wants to play childish games.

Pathetic.

We're conservatives.  We're suppose to understand the concept of "you  get what you pay for".

We deserve every elected official we have.  They are the best and brightest we're going to get for the money.

On the campaign finance side, until we outlaw incumbents fundraising and accepting any money while in office, along with using government funds to match whatever their opponent raises, we'll always end up with type of people and quality of leadership we have right now.

Government sucks because we've designed government to suck.  No amount of bitching will change it.  Only change with change it.

Used to be you could spend a lot of money on a good pair of shoes and know they'd last for years and years.   You could buy a cheap pair of shoes, too, but then you'd have to replace them more frequently as they wore out.  That was okay because they were cheap.

These days you can buy an expensive pair of shoes and they'll wear out in the same amount of time as the cheap pair.   The only reason you spend that much money on a pair of shoes is vanity.     "You got the knockoffs, but I got the REAL Nikes."

How much we pay them isn't the problem.   It's how long we keep them after they've worn out    that matters.

"How much we pay them isn't the problem."

You should write to whoever is handling your retirement investments and let them know that they can hire someone for minimum wage to run things.  They only work in millions and billions, not the trillions we entrust these bozos with.

Money matters.  Among the people who would make excellent, responsible congressmen and senators, $175K wouldn't start to pay their normal living expenses.  Add in the cost of maintaining  two residences and finding the right people becomes a joke.

Make running for national office a promotion instead of invitation to poverty.  Tap into the sweet spot for executive leadership.  Don't nickel and dime or (which is the main objection) screw the country because of salary envy.

292 jwest - Why[i\] is it that a person earning an average salary should not be able to live and work in/around D.C.? Is it a salary problem, or a culture problem? I submit that it is a culture problem. I do not believe for a moment that the average politician is possessed of extraordinary intellect, or even experience. Case in point : Joe Biden. You are suggesting that one answer to the political morass is increasing salaries, which sounds like big-government Republicanism to me. Naturally those doing the job should earn a living wage, but I can not imagine why the pay (and perqs, and benefits) should be an attraction. I regard that as part of the problem. Frankly, I suspect that you feel that those whose financial circumstances are less than affluent, are sub-par in the context of intellect and achievement. There is an air of arrogant elitism about it. I have encountered it many times, in board rooms, in clubs, etc.. It is a contempt for those whose circumstances have been less than your own. It is the Trent Lott attitude. I am not going to get into a pissing contest over this, but statements like "Tap into the sweet spot for executive leadership." is the very methodology that leads to professional, self-promoting politicians.

People who have a talent for making organizations run efficiently are either in positions with large corporations or running their own businesses.  Either way, they are making a lot more than a congressman makes.

Unless someone is totally driven by ego, getting them to give up their comfortable private life for open circus of politics is very hard.  At a minimum, the pay and perks should be reasonable to attract the talented.

Not only do they need a solid base pay, but they need an equal amount on the line in bonuses to give them an incentive to find ways to make the country run efficiently.  Right now, there isn't any reason to look for cost savings or to even try to reduce spending.

I would like to think that there are plenty of ultra-talented people ready to give up the comforts of their labors to work in the fishbowl of Washington for the good of America.  Sarah Palin was an example of what happens to people who are willing to do this.

What would it hurt to have well paid, incentivized people raising and spending out 2.5 trillion each year, instead of stumblefucks we ended up with in the current system?

Once election time came they remembered why they were Republicans, thus why Ford almost came back down 30 points in the polls to beat Carter before his major gaffe cost him even w/ a double digit advantage in turnout for Democrats. Many of them eventually ended up becoming Republicans by the 90s. A good many are dying off. Thus why today's Democrat party is at it's most extreme since LBJ.

Simple solution.  Make air conditioning illegal in DC.

If that is not effective enough, allow ranchers who's livestock is being eaten  by endangered species like wolves or bears to trap those predators and then transport them to DC where they will be reintroduced to the environment.

Remember, gun ownership is severely restricted in DC and it is against the law to kill those endangered species anyway.

319 "These new guys don't care about making things work." This is like being happy that a car being driven toward a cliff at 80 mph is "working." Those darn guys who stopped the car, they don't care about making things work. We have a car to drive here. All their crazy talk about this so-called cliff, that's at list 200-300 yards off in the distance. No need for this craziness of stopping the car.

It's time to kick the professionals out of politics -- at least the elective offices.

We cannot endure a government which is so determined to rule against the wishes of the people.

F*ckin' A right.
