SD Senator Tim Johnson, Democrat, Ready to Retire
— Ace

Obviously we should win this seat.

So why do I have this sinking feeling we won't?

This is a big thing-- we consistently lose Senate races in the supposedly red states of the Mountain West. I don't know why. I've heard it's because of farming subsidies, but all Republicans from this area support those took so I don't get it.

I'll tell you what, all the reports coming out what obamacare is going to do to people early next year are absolutely going to have some dems scrambling.

The fact that the LIV's  (the ones that aren't part of the FSA) will feel it in the wallet will cause some heartburn for the dems.

It is *almost* an unfuckable easy campaign for places like SD.  But you're right, the repubs will mess it up, and probably already have with their bending over on everything lately.

If you include popular media (alphabet TV stations, magazines, movies, newspapers) as "infrastructure" you have put your finger on the main issue.  We can't sell freedom to live your life; limited government; earn a decent wage and keep most of the money you earn...  How can that be if not for message delivery venues and messengers?

Their staffers work for public unions and get plenty of time to campaign on the public dime. Our (few) campaign offices open in July and close the first Wednesday after the first Monday in November. Our staffers are all volunteers who know jack shit about how to run a race and have no time to campaign. That's the difference.

IP phones backfeed the copper house telco wiring.

To do this they disconnect you copper telco wire at the telco network interface box outside.

You should be able to get copper landline back by plugging in the jack they unplugged outside, and unpluggng any cable box connections to the telco wall jacks.  The outside network interface box is probably in a gray/tan box a bit smaller than a cereal box.

That should reactivate the copper telco land line unless you already had that service disconnected.

82 I hope the SD GOP and tea party movement has learned from the past two election cycles

re l'affaire Akin: the tea-party (headed by Palin) supported Steelman; and the MO GOP establishment supported, I think, Brunner.

Either Steelman or Brunner would have been fine. Brunner maybe more of a sure thing, but Steelman hasn't given any signals that she was a Sharron Angle. One thing we do know is that McCaskill didn't want to face either of them.

So the lesson learnt here is that the SD GOP should check out who's running, get with tea-party leaders (probably the GOP precinct chairs anyway), and decide who's the most credible person they can field.

96 If *I* were doing it, I'd make a special adapter that only disconnects line 1 on the inside wiring in the box outside and remaps telco's line 1 to inside line 2.

Then make a 2-wire cord for backfeeding the inside line 1 copper from the cable box.

THAT would leave you with line 1 on IP phone, and inside line 2 still hooked up to the telco's line 1.

THAT way you can still keep copper telco 911 service.

141 "This is a big thing-- we consistently lose Senate races in the supposedly red states of the Mountain West."

Because there is a massive strain of classic Western leave-me-the-fuck-alone libertarianism in those states, and the contemporary GOP has, with one wing's obsession about regulating social issues, alienated a good many of those potential voters.

Those people don't rush to vote for liberals. They just don't vote, period.

A Republican pitch that said, "We want smaller government in every way, period, full stop, end of story," would go a long way towards winning back some of those votes.

143 Well, if I had to give a reason, I'd say the GOP loses because God hates idiots. I think this GOP, and its main supporters, is/are about played out. Can't win, won't follow, won't get out of the way. Nothing I can seemingly do one way or the other, but since we are apparently fated to lose, I won't mind seeing the GOP crash and burn along the way. Naturally, because I said this, it will go the opposite way. Isn't that the way it always goes? Though my guess is God still would hate idiots.

145 As mentioned above, the key to '14 is being handed to the R's on a huge, gold platter.  And that key is Obamacare.  It will be radioactive as this year unfolds and as '14 begins.  That's when TSHTF, even for the LIVs.  The Dems will not be able to escape their total culpability in the pain people will be feeling in their wallets.  There are millions of dopes out there who have no idea the ramifications of this law.  But they will...and soon.  Of course, that's assuming any R candidate uses it to his/her advantage.  {now excuse me while I guffaw}

Before 1994, GOP hadn't owned Congress since the Great Fucking Depression.  Even during Reagan's ass raping of the D prez. candidates.

Think long and hard on that.  Even with the Reagan revolution, not until 1994 did we take majorities in the Congress.  What happened in 1994:  1) GUN CONTROL - ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN; and 2) SOCIALIST HEALTHCARE.

2010 was the beginning, 2012 was the obamaphone/RINO setback, 2014 we should continue the momentum and 2016 could be the ultimate coup for small government, fiscally responsible governance and the attempted slashing of as much red fucking tape and leftist shite as we can.

175 You know that "Preference Cascade" we talked about so avidly in Oct/Nov '12?

Well we're experiencing one since Nov '12.

There isn't anything that can foreseeably  stop the implementation of major parts of the Democrat Liberal agenda.

They are sweeping the table and the Republicans are playing straight men to the comedian, the Washington Senators to the Harlem Globetrotters.

They're just there to make it look legitimate.

But it's not and we now know it.

Sorry to be so pessimistic but I hear and see too much that tells me there's more to come and it's all bad news for any one who cares about a free country and how we have either thrown it away or had it taken without a fight by those we trusted to look out for our best interests.

IT WILL BURN.

But there's some dark days until then.

176 WE only lost SD in 2002 for 2 reasons:
1: Vote fraud on Indian Reservations (they waited until all other numbers were in, then made up the votes they needed).
2: Daschel was Senior Senator from SD, and Senate Majority leader.  Keeping him SML would have kept more money flowing to SD.  So whores voted for Johnson for that reason.

2008, well 1: that was the Dem Wave election.  2 Sympathy for brain damaged (literally) Johnson.

177 Truman is winning the thread. Over the last few months I've explained, several times, that the "professional left" is also a local phenomenon. Through various means local Dem offices are staffed year round with actual employees. I spent a month-- a month!!-- last election trying to get the local GOP to get Internet. I failed. The local Dem office-- staffed year round with volunteers who also happen to have full time jobs with various grant-receiving groups (enviro, community action, etc), or whose spouses have 6 figure state jobs. That's a big part of the professional left.

202 Sven, It's part patronage, yes, but there are also huge aspects of sheer organization and political willpower that are also at play there. A great example from the 2012 election in Virginia, I believe. It was an article about what Obots were doing to help team O. They were putting up out of state college volunteers in their own homes, so the kids could volunteer full time in Va. I have trouble seeing conservatives doing that for "the cause.". That illustrates many things, including an inferior level of political commitment and willpower,

Posted by: Hopeless at March 25, 2013 02:53 PM (dNkDl)

203 "The main campaign, repeated endlessly, should be 'obamacare costs are going to make farm subsidies impossible'."

That's an excellent start right there.

Something the GOP has forgotten is that the left is not monolithic. It's a coalition of groups that in some cases don't like one another very much and/or have competing economic interests.

Consider: gay rights advocates and the very homophobic black church. Both teaming up to elect Obama. But never concealing their bitter distaste for one another.

Consider: enviromental lunatics who absolutely oppose evil fossil fuel projects like Keystone, and heavy construction labor unions who would do well out of building Keystone.

Pick points of schism and start to drive carefully targeted wedges in. That's what the left has done to the GOP with regard to its libertarian and socon blocs, with considerable success. Turnabout is fair play.

The one thing I don't think you could ever do would be to peel black support away from Obama. That part of the left coalition really is essentially monolithic. But Obama is timing out as we speak, becoming more of a lame duck by the day, and no one queued up to run to replace him is black, and there will not be anything like the level of fervor for them which he generated in the black community.

The public hears about all sorts of tough California regulations that stymie business – rigid zoning laws, strict building codes, constant inspections – but apparently none of that applies out here." just like the shit that drives adam corolla insane, the police giving middle class people tix instead of policing the under class. cause it's all about revenue production and bussing people to the voting booth.

You can preach Adam Smith and the free-market all you want.  All they know is they can't economically survive on Republican economic policies.  They are in the throes of it NOW, and they ain't interested in your plan for them to take on $40,000 in student loan debt to get re-trained.  After all, they have four kids to feed because they chose not to abort them.  They are the allies and brothers-in-arms that you abandoned.  That is why people like Tim Johnson get elected in supposed 'conservative' areas.  Believe it or perish.

In Montana, it's the mine workers and rail unions, and in SD, its mine workers, oilfield workers, and railroad workers.

Wyoming is solid, except in Cheyenne, Laramie, and Jackson's Hole. There the blame rests on Railroad unions, the Laramie University of Wyoming crowd, and the caltards who use Jackson's Hole vacation homes as a tax dodge.

Colorado is nearly beyond hope, as they have a full caltard invasion to deal with.
