I learned to cook from my dad, who learned to cook from his mom, both of whom had families of 6. I did occasionally cook for my family as well (to keep skills up.)
When I got married and moved out I realized that none of my approaches really translated well to a 2 person family. (It's really hard to take things that are based on rote memory and judgment rather than actual recipes and scale them down. Plus how do you make a meatloaf from 1/3lb ground beef?)
The solution thus far has been to just cook as if I still had a family of 6 and only cook every other day (or less.) We throw out some food, but not very much at all actually. (And usually if we pitch something it's like a side rice where everything but that got eaten, and it's not enough to make another meal of. Or something like the lentil soup I made which has feed us for 4 freaking meals, but for some odd reason there's still a ton left.)
I could probably freeze stuff and keep it longer, but so far this has worked.

The only real exception to that is any raw food that's been vac-packed (fish and some tenderloins are a good example).
Experience tells me that vac-packing traps in some smells that aren't really that big of a problem (especially if you're lazy and thaw in the vac pack.)

This one should come close to what you had in Charleston
Folly Island Shrimp and Grits
2 1/2 cups canned low-salt chicken broth
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
3/4 cup quick-cooking white grits
3 tablespoons cream cheese
2 tablespoons half and half
1/2 cup chopped green onions
1 pound uncooked medium shrimp, peeled, deveined
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
Combine chicken broth and 1 tablespoon butter in heavy medium saucepan and bring to boil. Stir in grits. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Mix cream cheese and half and half into grits. Cover and simmer mixture until almost all liquid has evaporated and grits are tender, stirring frequently, about 7 minutes. Stir in green onions. Remove mixture from heat.
Melt remaining 3 tablespoons butter in heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add shrimp and sauté just until shrimp are cooked through, about 3 minutes. Stir in lime juice. Remove skillet from heat. Spoon grits onto center of plate. Top with shrimp and drizzle with lime butter from skillet.

Guido, oh yes. Have what is called a low-light Karmann Ghia, it was made before 1960. Trying to restore it.
Right now the air cooled VW community is very much in mourning. Thursday about 1am in Long Beach, CA Dave Ormel crashed his black 1959 Karmann Ghia, hit an 88 Bronco. The Ghia caught fire and Ormel could not be rescued. Ormel co-owned Eddy and Dave's Garage and when he was not being a grease monkey, he was a Disney executive in charge of theme parks.

The Karmann Ghia owes its unique styling to literally international confluence of Karma. The Hebmueller factory had burned down in 1953 due to a paint fire. Karmann was trying to branch out so they talked to the Ghia design bureau in Turin Italy for a stylish design to fit on a modified Type 1 Beetle pan. So Ghia created the sleek low slung curvy body we now know as the Karmann Ghia.
The body itself is unibody. Except for the doors, hood, and trunk all the metal panels are welded together. Then the German metal smiths would use their hammer sets and lead filler to smooth out the rough spots. The body was practically hand built. Which is why the Karmann Ghias are called 'the poor man's Porsche' because by the time you pay for all the bodywork, your Karmann Ghia has become your house.

I trust Alton brown, who covered this and pointed out that it's a bit overkill.
Washing the beans gets rid of most of the oligosaccharides (Which either are going to detach fairly quickly or not at all.)
Plus beans are full of them anyway.
Google also tells me that there are lots of people who skip the soaking part all together and instead go for a much longer cook time.

"Our highest priority is the US. Anything there, even if on a smaller scale compared to what we may do in the UK, would be our choice. So the question is: with the people you have, is it possible to get a package or a person with a package on board a flight heading to the US? If that is not possible, then what ideas do you have that could be set up for the uk?
Â…You should definitely take the [cabin crew] opportunity, the information you could get would be very useful."

71 is probably best year for a lot of Karmann Ghia applications. Second most produced year. First year with IRS suspension so better handling. Also last year for the original bumpers. In 72 came the canoe bumpers along with Type 3 taillights which christened the 72-74s as BUTs .

"The first Caliph Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) fought against the apostates and against the two superpowers of his time, the Roman and Persian Empires. The war against the apostates was to reestablish the acceptance and submission of the tribes of Arabia to the law of Allah. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said if they refuse to give even a bridle they used to give to the Messenger of Allah, he will fight them over it."

I had some ant poison that was like a year past it's sell by date.
You'd think it would be safe to eat.
I'm considering a class action suit.

What is your point? No one, including Paul is mourning Awlaki.
Posted by: Ook? at March 09, 2013 08:47 AM (OQpzc)
The idea that Awlaki was nothing more than a terrorist sympathizer has been repeated numerous times since at least 2010, when CCR and the ACLU sued the government on his behalf. I realize Steyn was primarily skewering the government for their hypocrisy but this myth declaring Awlaki to be a mere sympathizer needs to be debunked.

He said to just make up some dough or buy it from him and just put leftover vegetables and appropriately cut up meat on it with cheese and bake. Whatever you have. I've almost done that actually, since I make homemade pizza every week. My wife says he does chipotle chicken pizza, I reminded her that I've made it at least twice . Onions, potatoes, spinach , broccoli coming next time.
