Senate Democrats Up For Reelection Say Obama's Phony Phixes to Obamacare Aren't Enough; Plan a "Multifaceted" Reform
— Ace

Or at least a "multifaceted" campaign season PR push.

Senate Democrats facing tough reelections say President Obama has not done enough to fix the botched rollout of his healthcare law and are vowing to repair it themselves.

The Senate Democratic leadership is not on board with lawmaker plans to begin rewriting ObamaCare and have urged for more time to assess the changes made by Obama and his team, lawmakers say.

Landrieu, Shaheen and Udall face reelection next year.

...

Shaheen wants to extend the enrollment period for the ACA; Landrieu wants to mandate that insurance companies continue to offer plans that people like, even if they donÂ’t meet the lawÂ’s requirements; and Udall wants to expand the pool of people included in the individual insurance marketplace.

...

The topic [Landrieu's suggestion that people be permitted to re-up on their old policies] came up briefly at a Tuesday lunch meeting, but Reid has urged the group of centrists to be patient and put off action until after Jan. 1.

...

Bennet and other Democrats have expressed concerns about what many expect to be a wave of new ObamaCare regulations.

“I’m concerned about the regulations which have yet to be issued,” said Angus King (Maine), an independent who caucuses with the Democrats.

He expressed concern that businesses providing healthcare coverage could be hit by excessive paperwork demands.

“This town seems to like issuing regulations,” he added. “I think the administration should be exceedingly careful about the onerousness of the regulations that are issued.”

Bennet said there should be an easier process to repeal ill-conceived rules related to healthcare and other issues.

Reid is committed to the "Buy Time" plan, just like Obama is. What Magical Rescue do they expect on January 1st?

As Drew writes in the post below, only 5-15% of the tiny number of Obamacare enrollees have actually paid their first month's premium. That means the tiny number of these so-called "enrollees" overstates the number of people who have actually purchased insurance by a factor of around 10.

About 36,500 people, or thereabouts, will actually have insurance on January 1st.

Five million people have lost insurance due to Obamacare.

It is usually the case that putting off the realization of a setback results in the ultimate setback being even worse when it arrives. That seems very likely to be the case here.

In twenty days we're going to start seeing the use of the C-word -- Crisis. And this is a crisis of Obama's making, Obama, Reid, Pelosi. All of them. They took people's insurance away and in return gave them a non-functioning website that cost several billion dollars of taxpayer money.

Obamacare walks into a bar.

The bartender says , " What can I get you?"

Obamacare says  " give me 15 shots of jagermeister and 10 beers to chase them down and a bottle of scotch"

The bartender says " what are you trying to do, kill yourself?"

Obamacare   replies  "  of course not,  I'm just trying to fix myself"

51 HUGE HUGE HUGE thing for people looking for a plan! I found a better alternative than Samaritan! Christian Healthcare Ministries is $450/month for a family of 3 or more at there highest level but here's the big thing... They do offer some coverage for pre-existing conditions. Up to $15,000 for the first year, and then more coverage every year until you hit year 3 when it will no longer be considered pre-existing and will be fully covered. I know I sound like an ad, but this is seriously the best thing I've come across in the past 3 months. Also, they don't have the statement of faith issue that we had with Samaritan, which probably doesn't matter to anyone else, but it's a huge plus for us.

86 Interesting tidbit - In the northern hemisphere the death spiral moves in a clockwise direction.

When people talk of needing the "young invincibles" to sign up they always describe them as young and healthy, but they really should include wealthy - A young healthy person who signs up with a subsidy won't be subsidizing older sicker workers as the system was designed.

So even if they have a good mix of young and healthy enrollees (which they don't) they also need the ones who are bright enough to earn a fair amount of money but still stupid enough to buy a product they don't need or likely want. Good luck!

114 Because of the "crisis" that occurs on January 1st, with 5 million losing their insurance, Obama, with the backing of the MSM, will blame the insurance companies and the red states that didn't set up exchanges. He will offer a form of extended Medicare to everyone who lost their insurance for 80% of what they had been paying for their old policies by executive order. Everyone affected will be damn glad to get coverage and the only one taking it in the ass is the U.S. taxpayer. The Hero saves the day. MacGuffins all around. A few stupid people will still be standing with their jaws open, mumbling "He can't do that!", but no one will pay attention to them. The script almost writes itself.

I guess what I'm asking is, what's the metric used for "lost"?

In twenty days we're going to start seeing the use of the C-word -- Crisis. And this is a crisis of Obama's making, Obama, Reid, Pelosi. All of them. They took people's insurance away and in return gave them a non-functioning website that cost several billion dollars of taxpayer money.

Try living in Massachusetts, Ace.  If all you read were the local papers (excluding the Herald), you'd never know there was anything wrong with Barkycare.  The papers won't report it and the letters to the editor pages are filled with stooges claiming the sun shines out of Obama's ass and any problems are the fault of the racist Rethuglicans.

A scant few conservative comments make it through the screening process, and usually they're ones that sound apologetic or a bit too "concerned", until inevitably someone drops a "monkey" comment or something, which somehow makes it through moderation, and the thread immediately becomes "Conservatives are all racists!". Like clockwork.

165 @ 122:

You have my complete sympathy.   While deployed for the gubbermint in Boston 3-4 years ago,   me and another field inspector took the ferry from Quincy to downtown Boston.

On the trip,   I had to listen to some sniveling punks sitting on the other side of the exterior deck going on and on about how great the wun is.

I must say,   I expected most people I met there to be the type who walk around with a stick up their backside.   I found that to be far from the case though.   Almost all the people I met were hard working typical Americans.   Where do all the glitter spreading,   hopey/changey people live?   How is it we always seem to be out numbered by these people when real life experiences seems to indicate otherwise?

Posted by: Lloyd Loar at December 11, 2013 09:49 AM (9u2hL)

166 Are you kidding? The White House told Lockheed Martin to break the law and not send their notices before an election. The government paid LM's fines.  Do you really think that won't happen this time around, too?
======
I remember that. Illegal as hell but then again, this is TFG.
People will notice. They can't pay everyone's fines.
======

Lockheed Martin is beholden to Federal gov't contracts for a huge part of its core business.  Knowing how petty/vindictive the Obama "Chicago Way" administration is, they couldn't afford to take chances there.   Obama leaned on them because he knew he could.

This isn't true of insurance companies.

Also, insurance companies are subject to State and local law too.   Obama may give them a "pass" from Federal action, but he can't really indemnify them for violating any State laws on this.

Obamacare has to do this because what it is trying to redistribute, essentially, is health from people who have it to people who don't, and health is an expensive thing to provide to someone who doesn't have it naturally. Even when spread over a large population, it's going to be a lot of money per healthy person.

If nature had intended your genes to live on, she wouldn't have made you unhealthy or at least she would have given you some marketable skill so you could pay for the necessary treatment. Or even a winning personality so people would voluntarily chip in for your costs. Seems to me that if you don't fall into one of these categories, you aren't adding much to society anyway.

173 I wouldn't hinge my argument on people not signing up.  They are being herded like sheep, and don't really have an escape route, so eventually there will be a large number of really pissed off people show up on the exchange.  But the administration wants to use this metric because the power of the law coerces compliance over time.  Signups are a sign of success only when people aren't forced to participate.

Better to ignore the signup numbers and make the case what an extraordinary bit of fraud this is and what an extraordinarily bad deal it is for everyone.  Counting heads just plays into the administration's hands.  Yeah, it is a clusterfuck now with the web site, but it needs to be emphasized that the web site is the BEST functioning part of the ACA.  What is coming is loss of insurance for millions on employer plans, higher premiums, coverage for things you don't need, while things you do need are outlawed, limited choice and the shoveling of more people onto the Medicare rolls when that program was already a bankrupt and a chief deficit driver.  Then comes bankruptcy for the insurance companies and bailouts from the government.  There is absolutely nothing positive about this thing unless you choose an artificial metric like the number of people who have been forced to sign up --- so of course that is what the media will focus on.

It is like saying the concentration camps in WWII were popular vacation destinations because of the number of people who went there.  What choice did they have?

I don't think so.

The young healthy people that largely didn't pay for healthcare before (ie the ones that need to be in the pool to make it work out financially) aren't going to suddenly come around, especially when many of them are unemployed, underemployed, and/or generally appreciate how much of a screwjob Obamacare is.

The so called "death spiral" could kill most of the private insurance carriers before Obamacare can become self-supporting. . .though bluntly, that was probably the INTENT of Obamacare to begin with, rather than an accident.

225 At what point do the dems/Obama make it illegal for any medical facility or doctor to refuse to take Medicare/aid?
====

They can't.

There are already plenty of doctors who either won't take Medicare at all, or won't accept more Medicare patients, because the payments are so low, they  don't cover costs.

If Obama tried a Canada-style system forcing doctors to choose between the public system and the private one (ie if you ever take one cent from a non public system, you are permanently kicked out of the public one), then two things will happen:

a. A significant number of older Doctors will just up and retire, not wanting to deal with the hassle.
b. A significant proportion of the ones who remain will just elect to opt entirely out of the public healthcare sector.

Obviously, there will still be doctors who will accept Medicare, but in certain specialties virtually nobody will, and the overall effect will be a significant reduction in available providers, and shortages. . .same as everywhere else that has tried this bone-headed maneuver.

Town halls this spring are going to be SPECTACULAR, bitches.

Obviously, there will still be doctors who will accept Medicare, but in certain specialties virtually nobody will, and the overall effect will be a significant reduction in available providers, and shortages. . .same as everywhere else that has tried this bone-headed maneuver.

And thus, no treatment for millions of insured.  Otherwise known as bending the cost curve down.

237 "Senate Democrats facing tough reelections say President Obama has not done enough to fix the botched rollout of his healthcare law and are vowing to repair it themselves."

Great. Let them.

The thing about having taken a swan dive into a vat of tar is that smearing the stuff around afterward really doesn't fix the problem.

What causes my head to explode is that there are STILL idiots out of the Beltway branch of the Republican party who are proposing to pitch in to "help fix" this mess.

Hell no. By definition, it's not fixable. The only thing that will happen to conservatives attempting to deal with the tarry mess is to get it all over themselves, and allow Democrats to spread the blame.

One (1) Republican voted for Obamacare. Cao. He's not in the House any longer. There's not a single sitting GOP member who can be pointed to as having enabled the Obamacare train wreck. Keep it that way. Maintain the wary distance as the Democrats implode.

239 You're all missing the point.... Obama and the commie dems don't give two shits about the ACA, aside from how effectively it can be used to further their ultimate goal, which is abolishment of the Constitution and imposition of martial law. They want this thing to cause as much socio-economic damage as possible. Combined with the Fed's full-frontal blitzkrieg against the dollar, they are waiting for either open rebellion or a collapse of the currency so they can do away with all of these silly games and move straight to the main objective. That's why Obama has been stacking the military with Generals' willing to fire on civilians and who espouse anti-2nd Amendment viewpoints. That's why DHS and other federal agencies have been stockpiling military weapons and equipment. That's why their primary strategy is biding time, because none of the rest of this shit matters if they can make these things come to a head so they can deliver the "killing-blow" that America will not be able to recover from. Our government has been completely infiltrated by communists and NWO internationalists, and the whole Dem/Repub side-show is one big con-job designed to distract and give the illusion that we still have some control of the system. In fact, I'd say that the only reason they've gotten this brazen is that they are so close to achieving their goal, that they think they can afford to let the mask slip a little.

Oh, and there is no way that the Executive Branch can ignore written law, pick and choose what laws to enforce, unilaterally change laws, rewrite laws to punish political enemies... It all just crazy talk! Next thing you know, people will start saying that politicians can blame security failures on YouTube vids, mandate that churches pay for birth control and abortions, and who gets medical care will be a matter for a panel of political appointees with no oversight to decide.

Granted I have no proof but if you had a system that was only 60% effective and you knew that you were going to be in a sh storm and you just happened to be the most spin conscious politicition to set foot on the earth, it might make sense to launch that system at 20% effectiveness and then Dec1st bump it up to about 50% and unveil a 10% increase during some future crisis in the hope that by that time the system would be capable of better due to the time extention.  We predict failure on January 1st. I also didn't expect the 'tech surge' to make that much of a difference.  If we keep expecting it to be as bad as reality makes it seem, we set the expectations low based on what we know.  If what they know is that they have a rabbit in a hat then guess what?  We look like a holes.  My play here would be to over estimated the Presidents capabilities.  'We are confident that people will be able to pay for their insurance online by Jan 1st' Make them say well no actually we still suck.  As long as the pushpack to the Pres's narrative is that things are terrible then the president can keep pulling BS improvements and sell them as victories.  How Do You Kill a MacGuffin??? My answer, make it a comedy, or tradgedy.. "who believes in this guy? I do! and if I can sell myself as someone who was just so gosh-darned sure that he would succeed but I've been let down, then maybe some (read: practically all) of the Presidents constituents might jump to the same conclusion.  Lets stop having expections of this guy that (accurately) expect him to be a three year old.  He want's to be this generation's Reagan?  Lets compare how he does to "what would the Gipper do?"  Roger Moore thinks he is cool when he is James Bond.  Roger Moore is not cool when he see him as imitating Sean Connery or comparing him to Daniel Craig.

Of course, there wouldn't have been any problems if Obama had just written all of the code himself with his super awesome Chicago Jesus powers.

But he just didn't have time, because he was distracted with having to save the world. And deal with Republican obstructionism. And work on his putting.

258 "And he specifically cited the VA as a model." --------------------------- VAs, like NHS facilities, vary. Some are good, some are just awful. BUT the good and adequate ones rely heavily on the private sector, much as Canada's health service relies on the US for back-up. Take this UNhorror story. My neighbor goes into the VA with lesions on his face. Doc suspects cancer, gets a biopsy, the lesions are extracted, AND reconstructive surgery is done ---all in 22 days. Three weeks. Can't do it faster. Un believable. How does this happen? The VA docs know private docs who will fast-track a vet and accept the crappy VA compensation. They pick up a phone. I know a lot of good VA docs ---yeah, there are good ones--- who are very frightened about what will happen to private medicine. They rely on it, especially for cases they think need immediate attention.

Posted by: Margarita DeVille at December 11, 2013 10:26 AM (dfYL9)

259 Naturally, NONE of these minor reforms or delays will work.  The whole O-Care system is designed to be paid for by healthy young enrollees paying double or more what their plan would have cost two years ago, fines on the noncompliant, and the money they took from Medicare.

For this, they NEED AT LEAST 7 million enrollees through the exchanges (including those subsidized but not new Medicaid cases), of which 2.7 million MUST be young healthy people who overpay.

Even these Obama projections may be wildly optimistic but if they aren't met we know for a fact the system will be awash in deficits and Obama will have to ask Congress for tens or hundreds of billions a year to cover them - adding to the annual federal deficits, of course.

Massive, total FAIL.
