— Ace It's a day of shocks. Again, I mean.
Via @benk84: the same people who claim that Christians are plotting a "Quiverfull" military takeover of the United States also claimed that the Muslim Brotherhood was a moderate group which was "mostly secular" in outlook.
The prognosis is exceedingly grim. Two years after the ouster of long-serving strongman Hosni Mubarak, Egypt is in the throes of a full-blown economic crisis. Government reserves have dropped by more than half, plummeting from $36 billion in 2011 to just $15 billion today. That’s enough to cover just three months of imports of vital commodities such as food and petroleum. GDP growth has slowed to under 2 percent, and the country’s national currency, the Egyptian Pound, is in freefall. At the same time, unemployment has surged, now estimated at nearly 13 percent and rising...These statistics are all the more tragic because they could have been avoided. The February 2011 ouster of Mubarak was followed by a pronounced fiscal downturn, leading many to conclude that the country’s new, Muslim Brotherhood-dominated government—for all of its bluster to the contrary—wouldn’t impose radical changes on the country’s political direction. Instead, conventional wisdom held that the new powers-that-be in Cairo would, for both economic and political reasons, opt for a process of “creeping Islamization”—a slow, gradual changeover of the country’s civilian bureaucracy and legislature which wouldn’t rile international markets or spook jittery investors.
The conventional wisdom turned out to be wrong. In recent months, the Brotherhood has thrown caution to the wind and set about remaking the Egyptian state in its own image with a speed and ferocity that has surprised most onlookers.
Even though they got this one (and the last one, and the one before that) wildly wrong, they'll be very arrogant and demanding that you trust them on the next one.
The central gravamen of the leftist worldview on foreign policy is that the right spends far too much time "hating" and "fearing" external enemies, imagining those external enemies to be very different from themselves, and thus alien and threatening.
To combat this supposed failing, leftist worldview pushes the idea that those in other countries are "really no different from ourselves," and they base their prognoses on this idea. The idiots at Davos imagine that the Muslim Brotherhood types might talk tough, but deep down, in their truest heart, they'd... all rather be at Davos, too. They too would like to sip champers and chomp on shrimp.
They then peacock around, showing off their Morally Superior feathers, noting how -- unlike those Xtianists in the US -- they don't "hate" and "fear" what they don't understand.
Now, simultaneous with pushing the idea that the Muslim Brotherhood is "just like us" and comprised of Davos-loving Men of the Enlightenment, they push the idea that the Christian right in the US is in fact to be be both feared and hated -- the Muslim Brotherhood would never, ever impose a radical new social order on Egypt (even though they've proclaimed their desire to do so for years), but Focus on the Family, on the other hand, does indeed plot just such a takeover of the US.
But what -- I thought we weren't supposed to "hate" and "fear" what we don't understand? I thought it was base to feel threatened by people and think of them as strange and alien simply because they're not similar to you culturally and religiously?
Shut up, they explained.
Leftism isn't really a worldview which even attempts an evenhanded and universal application to similar situations. It's merely a goal, an agenda, and any means, including blatant dishonesty and laughable hypocrisy and inconsistency, are fair means for pursuing its ultimate end.
Supposedly they are high-minded in refusing to accept that we might have any external enemies. They might seem more high-minded if they weren't constantly finding internal enemies which they would have us fear and despise.

West Point center cites dangers of ‘far right’ in U.S.
Now we are military threats. For believing in such dangerous notions as " strong convictions regarding the federal government, believing it to be corrupt and tyrannical, with a natural tendency to intrude on individualsÂ’ civil and constitutional rights. Finally, they support civil activism, individual freedoms, and self government."
God forbid Americans believe in individual freedoms!

Wait wait wait. I thought these media people were the ones telling us that the Muzzie Bro'hood was a "largely secular" organization. Why, then, would "conventional wisdom" have suggested that a largely secular organization would, "opt for a process of “creeping Islamization” —a slow, gradual changeover of the country’s civilian bureaucracy and legislature..." Islamization is, by its very nature, a theocratic movement; it's not secular.
So, WTF, MFM? Are you trying to say they were Islamists THE WHOLE TIME?

To the point, yes. They got it wrong on Egypt. They got it wrong on the Muslim Brotherhood. They got it wrong on Benghazi and Mali and just about everywhere else, and they're going to keep getting it wrong. Liberals are really just Fascists of a different stripe. That's why they react so gravely and admonish people when they're called "Fascists".
Liberals hate context almost more than they hate facts. So they'll distract, dissemble, demonize and demagogue to avoid it.

If nobody ever thought they were right, what would we disagree about? If we didn't disagree, surely we wouldn't fight. If we didn't fight, of course we wouldn't go to war. Without war, there would be no poverty; without poverty, there would be no crime; without crime, there would be no injustice. It's a utopian vision, and all that's required to usher in this utopia is the rejection of all fact, reason, eviÂdence, logic, truth, morality, and decency--all the tools that you and I use in our attempts to be better people, to make the world more right by trying to be right, by siding with right, by recognizing what is right and moving toward it." - Evan Sayet

If the Left were to admit that not all cultures are the same - the cultural differences run deeper than language, clothing styles, and food - then they would have to make moral distinctions based on something more solid than individual and cultural preference. Since they cannot admit the possiblity of absolute right and wrong, they cannot judge cultures as right or wrong, so they pretend that all cultures (and all religions) amount to no more than cosmetic differences.

The Egyptians were on a slow path to starvation before this takeover. Now they're on a fast path. I would assume that much like the Taliban and the Iranian clerical government, the Brotherhood does not view material impoverishment of its people as any sort of a problem. In fact, since they'll control the food supply, it's a good way to consolidate power by rewarding friends, and punishing or actually extermimating the political opposition and unwanted minorities, a la Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe.
Interestingly, one of the things contributing to the food shortage there is our idiotic conversion of a good part of our corn crop to ethanol. It helped destabilize Mubarak's regime initially, and then explicit destablilization was made U.S./Obama/Clinton policy. A double whammy of naive leftist delusions.

What moral construct is behind the right to self-defense?
Posted by: sven10077 at January 18, 2013 02:25 PM (LRFds)
"1736 Every act directly willed is imputable to its author:
Thus the Lord asked Eve after
the sin in the garden: "What is this that you have done?" He asked Cain the same question. The prophet Nathan questioned David
in the same way after he committed adultery with the wife of Uriah and had him
murdered.
An action can be indirectly voluntary when it results from negligence regarding
something one should have known or done: for example, an accident arising from
ignorance of traffic laws.
1737 An effect can be tolerated without being willed by its agent; for instance, a mother's exhaustion from tending her sick child. A bad effect is not imputable if it was not willed either as an end or as a means of an action, e.g., a death a person incurs in aiding someone in danger. For a bad effect to be imputable it must be foreseeable and the agent must have the possibility of avoiding it, as in the case of manslaughter caused by a drunken driver."
Pretty much sums it up. You are not guilty of murder in defense of innocent life--the death is an effect tolerated which was not willed. The action was defense, not murder.

Liberalism hates guns because they sincerely believe that your body is the state's and there is no right to self-defense and that the use of violence is indexed to the needs of the state and or "social justice"
It is why they have no issue on a Macro basis with HealthCare but the feel no shame fighting like hell to live despite the lack of the common man to use such benefits as ted Kennedy and Bobby Byrd got pro bono functionally.
They have plans for us, and they are not good ones.
Now take a breath and don't be afraid.

That faith of leftists is MORE rebutted by current evidence than the idea of a "young Earth"
Any historian will tell you that amongst societies at the time, Celtic, Germanic, Arabian, Perisian, Judeo, Egyptian, Slavic, Indian, Native American tribal, Mayan, Aztec, Ancient Japanese, Mongol, et AL that attempted to ponder the meaning of life, GREEK philosophy stands out as a true ANOMALY of thinking that men should be free and self governing. EVERY OTHER SOCIETY trended toward AUTHORITARIAN HIERARCHICAL COLLECTIVISM.
If Rome had not wholesale stolen Greek thought. There would be no Western Civilization.
Conservatives know, it is not the China, or Islam, or Cuba that is the "Other"
We are.
We are the "Other" we are the strange ones. And so we distrust others because we know it is our beliefs are abnormal in the world.
Our ideas of freedom are unique and strange, and never in the history of man have they been widely accepted by the world at large. That is a FACT that liberals cannot see because they have a faith that all across the world we are the same. Well if we were true, it would be us, the small minority of freedom seekers that would not exist, not the authoritarians.

Self-Ownership. It is the same 1st Principle behind Private Property, too.
I belong to no one except myself. Therefore no one has the right to do anything to me without my permission. If they attempt to do something to me without my permission, I, as the owner of myself, have the right to fight back.

This is such epic bullshit. Also from the publication:
These findings suggest that, in general, far-right groups and individuals are more inclined to engage in violence in a contentious political climate. This helps to explain the lack of increase in the level of violence during 1996, the least-competitive elections of the last 22 years."
Really? REALLY?
Now, to be clear, they aren't saying that the right is more inclined to engage in violence than the left. They're saying that the far-right is naturally violent, and displays that violence more often in election years. Which is such epic bullshit, I can't even...

Pretty sure Hammurabi would take issue with that.
The fact is, if murder is wrong, then self-defense (which is the active opposite of murder) cannot be. If it is wrong to murder me, it cannot be wrong for me to attempt to prevent my own murder.
But, as I said, the moral foundation that formed Hammurabi's understanding of it (whether he would use the terms or not) is the concept of self-ownership.

"However, can we also attribute the increase in the level of violence during particular timeframes to specific policy initiatives or other developments in the political arena? This question is relevant for two reasons. First, some studies on radicalization of counterculture communities, i.e., their tendency to slide to violent activism, found significant correlation between the occurrence of political events or the initiation of governmental policies which had the potential to pose a threat to the counterculture way of life, and the tendency of community members to engage in violent activism. Second, many of the texts that analyzed the history of the American far right tended to refer to such linkages. For example, the US Supreme Court rulings in 1954 against “separate but equal” policies in the education system, and in 1955, ordering district-level racial integration in the school system, are usually used to explain the recovery of the KKK in the mid-1950s...."

The findings presented in Figure 6 may also imply that the operational-social framework of the violent American far right could be better understood—with some modifications—via the framework of the iceberg theory “…of political extremism of social/political movements,” originally developed by Sprinzak almost 40 years ago. In the context of the American far right, it seems that we have a large base of supporters—the base of the iceberg—who are usually engaged in low-level violence such as minor incidents of vandalism or low-sophistication attacks against individuals. The tip of the iceberg includes a relatively small number of people who are responsible for producing mass-casualty attacks. Further developing the analogy, we can say that most of the low-level attacks have received relatively little attention from the media, political authorities and law enforcement: this is the submerged part of the iceberg which cannot be seen. The few mass-casualty attacks, represented by the visible tip of the iceberg, attract most of the attention.
In other words, "The violent far-right, unlike other successful terrorism movements, hasn't advanced to the scale of mass casualty-violence." So, in other words, THEY'RE A NON-FACTOR in the grand scheme of things, and the worst they do is individual acts of vandalism or personal attacks against specific people. Which is exactly the same as any idiot who's ever commited vandalism or assaulted someone.
Someone spent MONEY on this report.

While caution is warranted, what is not warranted is your certitude.
Anecdote but worthwhile:
"Dan and I met a couple of LEOs in the elevator yesterday. My elevator query: would you confiscate firearms? “I’d shoot my lieutenant for treason,” the cop said without a moment’s hesitation. “My lieutenant said ‘if the order came down from above, I’d have to follow it.’ And I said ‘Then I’ll have to shoot you.”"

Report was by Arie Perliger a West Point Grad and terrorism expert. He wrote a similar report in Sep 2012 saying nearly the same thing. He argues that the threat from the far right is from Neo-Nazi groups (Aryan Nation types), Anti-abortion radical (like Rudolph), and anti-federalists (like Posse Comitatus types). He looked at reported incidents in the last 20-30 years. He likes these dangerous groups to the tip of an iceberg. They are a small part of a larger political movement. He also studied Israeli terrorists who strike within Israel. The Center is allegedly independent of West Point and privately funded but has a ton of military on staff and also a lot of state department types and a former Ambassdor on staff.
I have very little doubt that the administration told them to write the report, and in this way, with the focus on the "anti-federalist" types.

What the feds are afraid of is the states looking at them and saying "fuck you you broke it you bought it."
The Army works for the feds.
Do not be afraid, the person is just doing their job just "following orders."

The anti-federalists were AGAINST having a central government, to the extent they wanted it as weak and small as possible. They LIKED the Articles of Confederation.
The federalists, wanted a STRONG central government with a LOT of centralized power.
Anti-federalists will eventually found the Democrat-Republican party, which after the death of the Federalist party gets infiltrated by Federalists causing a split around the time of Jackson. At which time the Democrat-Republican party becomes essentially the Federalist party, and the opposition breaks off and forms the Whigs. Who split over the issue of slavery eventually dissolve and reform as the Republican party, whose first real action of note is to use Federal power to end slavery. So yeah states rights kinda died somewhere in there, not really to be spoken of again until Reagan brought back to bear in the 80s and was accused of supporting Slavery.

Correct, the alien and sedition acts were levied against the remaining original Anti-Federalists in the system when they decried what they percieved as actions engaging in overreach.
The Federal Government has a nice long history of out of control stifling of even mild dissent.

I am a veteran. My son is currently serving as an infantry private and will soon be deployed to Afghanistan (which gnaws at me no end). I'm fairly confident stating neither he nor I would carry out an unlawful order, then or now, even though such a refusal would almost certainly engender a court martial. My point is that a majority of those serving in the military, particularly in combat arms, are the sons and daughters and siblings of those whom the West Point professor seeks to demonize. Most of those soldiers belong to us, not them.

rickb,
maybe you're saying the same thing, but I disagree with what appears to be your pronunciation
The word is said like it looks:
Grah'-va-men
I've said it and heard it in appeals courts at the state and federal level, and throughout law school. It's a word you learn from reading legal cases. It's more appropriate than saying "thrust" and more precise or formal than "main point" or "basic idea."

Sorry for the length of this excerpt, but just... *SPUTTER*
"The percentages cited in Figure 12—which classifies far right attacks based on the number of perpetrators—reflect a surprising reality. The great majority of attacks were perpetrated by a single individual or two perpetrators at most. Less than one third of the attacks were carried out by what we can call a group, i.e., three or more perpetrators. How can this discrepancy between the American far-right and other types of terrorism be explained?
First, words of caution are necessary. The perpetrators of 40% of the attacks in the dataset were never caught or identified; it is therefore impossible to know exactly how many perpetrators were involved. While this is not surprising, considering the nature of the phenomenon; and despite the fact that the sample size of the attacks with identified perpetrators is extremely large (2,649 attacks) in comparison to similar datasets, care is still demanded regarding any possible conclusions. Second, the findings may reflect a further, more extreme implementation of the leaderless resistance doctrine, which has been promoted by various leaders of the American far right during the last two decades. Thus, it seems that their words have not fallen on deaf ears. The findings may also indicate an interesting operational path which, on the one hand, ensures the survival of the organization, and on the other hand, allows it to engage indirectly in violent activities. In other words, while the organization as a whole cannot afford to be directly involved in sponsoring and perpetrating a violent campaign, since the legal and organizational implications may be costly, especially in the American/Western context of highly qualified and efficient law enforcement, it encourages individual members to engage in violent activities which are not directly part of the organizational operational framework. This strategy may not work in cases of extreme manifestations of violence—e.g., the loose and previous affiliation of McVeigh with the Michigan Militia, which eventually led to a harsh response against the militia movement after the attack in Oklahoma—but may be effective in cases of minor attacks. Moreover, considering that one of the most efficient countermeasures against far right groups during the 1980s and the 1990s was civilian law suits, the importance in distancing a given group from a direct link to attacks is further evident."
"Why is it that so many far-right terrorist actions are committed by lone wolves, when other acts of terrorism are committed by groups?"
"Because their leaders have told them to act on their own initiative."
So once again, individuals are not responsible for their own actions. There's always someone pulling their strings. Idiots and whackjobs are only idiots and whackjobs because SOMEONE TOLD THEM to be an idiot and a whackjob. This is apparently the shadowy "vast right wing conspiracy" we're all supposed to belong to.

A lot of the E-5s are still good old boys, most of the combat arms are still what they've always been.
The support services are a little more wobbly.

There will be two nations, one nation under new management, the same with a bunch of new "hated felon traitor assholes", or no nations on this real estate.
An emboldened world's bad actors will settle scores, face reciprocity, and have an economic explosion or implosion.

I almost hope that the West Point people will say that that it's fake or misleading, but the story is old enough, and it's not the first time...
There's the standard disclaimer at the start of the report that, "The views expressed in this report are the authorÂ’s and do not necessarily reflect those of the Combating Terrorism Center, U.S. Military Academy, Department of Defense or U.S. government." Which begs the question, why the fuck is it being posted on the West Point Combating Terrorism Center website?

didn't mean to be overly cryptic.
JWest I got through some bad times loving what I thought, and what I thought Reagan showed me this nation was. I know she's done wrong, God i know she's done wrong I can usually point out real harms in place of the moonbat's made up ones and examples worse than theirs but by God we try to be better and thus far in our nation's history we have been better. The thing is sometime around late 2003 when the left started actively undermining the war to bang Chimpy I recalled that Clinton had tried to label me a terrorist and that he had a pretty colorful '60s background himself and the media gave him a pass on it.
I just think, that the America I was in love with the system I revered as best guarantor of the ideas on liberty the Declaration of Independence embodied is dead and I can't let go.
At some point a little boy at his mom's casket crying tears on her much kissed face has to close the coffin and get back to work showing that the son lives up to the ideals she tried to teach him.
I'm nearing being ready to close the lid.

Do not count on the police and military to push back against the Nazification of this Nation. Look for them to follow orders
All totalitarian societies consist of three parts:
1) The Party which administers the nation
2) The military/police which enforces the Party's decisions
3) Some intelligence apparatus which is absolutely loyal and watches over the military/police
Under Hitler, the third element was the SS/Gestapo.
In the Soviet Union, it was the GRU/KGB.
Currently, the police/miltary in the US cannot be counted on to implement any sort of "Nazification".
That third element still needs to be created.

Actually, now that I think about it...this is a window into their own soul. Look at what they do with language. Their intellectual ancestors took a party that held regressive beliefs when it came to rights and freedom...and they named it the "Progressive Party." Their cousins overseas rule many "Democratic Republics" that are run by dictators, and many "People's Republics" that trample on the people, and neither kind of "republic" is a republic in any event.
They fight for "women's rights" by supporting a medical procedure that is often used in many parts of the world -- even right here in America -- to selectively kill developing women. They champion the cause of "social justice" by supporting policies that do violence to the social structures that have done more to advance the cause of justice than any other such set in recorded history. They will not rest until they secure "worker's rights" by systematically making the worker submit to the union that rules him...and "minority rights," which apparently include the right to live inescapably below the poverty line, the right to live in high-crime dangerous areas, and the right to become a perpetual dependent of the state.
On the economic front, they claim to side with the "little guy," and prove it by electing politicians that champion tax breaks and regulatory policies favoring big business. They argue that everyone should get "a fair share," by taking from the shares of those who earned what they have fairly...and then adding to the shares of those that didn't earn what they have now received. They want to preserve "Social Security" by keeping it just the way it is now until it goes bankrupt, at which point the members of the society who depend and planned to depend on it will no longer be or feel secure.
And let's not forget the legislation they support, the chief example of which is the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act," which (as it will turn out) will neither protect patients nor secure affordable care...certainly not the way they promised you. If you like your health plan, you can keep it until your employer kicks you off because they can't afford you anymore, at which point you will join the public plan and wait in long lines for the rest of your life, and eventually have critical care denied by a medical review board because it's not a cost-effective deployment of limited resources. That may sound like a death panel, but believe them, it's totally not.
For people like this, who live in a world where "black is white, up is down, and short is long" (thanks, Weird Al), should it be a shock that they look at the very honest name the MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD gave to their organization -- i.e., they're Muslim, and they care about men, not women -- and naturally assume that they were relatively secular and moderate in their outlook?
