Signs of recovery...or not

Entergy is laying off 800 of its 15,000 employees.

Entergy Corp. says it plans to cut 800 jobs — nearly one-third of them in Louisiana, where the bulk of its employees live...

Major layoffs at a major power generation outfit doesn't bode well. Something has to give - ongoing distribution grid maintenance/upgrades, power plant maintenance, customer service for downed lines, etc. Most power companies already run pretty lean.

Might as well open the thread as you open up a can of tasty beans for diner and enjoy the new "SmartGrid". Its so smart, it'll almost run itself.

Back in the day, long haul trucking companies turned over their entire labor force in two years. (on average). Not so much anymore because reality and stuff.

Obviously you have never worked in an industry where you were 'laid off' because your employer knew you would accept unemployment rather than try to hold on to your shitty job while the employer took another name out of the labor pool to see if there was any difference or just to get rid of a trouble maker and replace him with another anonymous body from the pool because there was a government subsidy for hiring the unemployed who would then be laid off when the subsidy ran out.

Problem is, a lot of companies, and perhaps this one, got all bloated during the good times (what I think of as "before barky").  And I have no problem whatever with any company that cuts fat and runs a leaner machine.  Shit, I wish there was a single government entity, anywhere, of any size, that would make these kind of moves.

50 they can call it whatever they want.  Entergy operates electric power plants.  Mostly gas/oil/coal fired.  And 11 nukes and some hydro-electric in Arkansas.  The administration picks winners and losers.  They haven't approved new power plants in forever, especially no new nuclear plants.  They punish electricity producers who use fossil fuels, especially coal.  They finance wind and solar, which is a money pit.   Someone is gonna buy Entergy, prolly a prog run energy company like NRG.  Watch.

My grandfather is probably  rolling in his grave.

He worked 40 years for Entergy when it was known as Louisiana Power and Light.  My grandmother lived on his pension for nearly another 15 years after he passed away in 1986. He could have done a lot of other things but LP&L took good care of  its employees and why he stayed  so long.  These days its different.

When Katrina hit, many Louisianans went to Texas and found it to be a good place to live.  For the most part, the ones who didn't like it were the criminals who were upset to find that murder is punished by capital punishment instead of 60 days in jail.  They went back home to Nwalins.

262 Hat, the paultards have been making a concerted effort, for the past 2 years or so, to take over the CA GOP.  I was in a position to have a lot of insider knowledge on that until about a year ago, so I don't know how it's going at this point.  But a weaker target probably does not exist, politically, than the CA GOP.  That said, I dislike the paultards.  However I definitely ALWAYS vote and ALWAYS against the Dem.

267 Reality is a 3rd party can, at best, be a useful protest vote that cause one of the major parties to change policy to try and co-opt it. Notice the Dems have gone much more hard-core eco-nazi since Nader's Green Party. And that the Green Party quickly died. Doesn't mean it's worthless. The eco-nazis seem have gained power with a protest vote and then take over of the Dems. Key with the Greens and eco-nazis though is they are a very wealthy, powerful class. A few dozen eco-nazi billionaires can have an outsized effect.

I was on the state central committee for years, and remember when they had a majority in the Assembly and most of the state-wide officers. I fled six years ago, and it seems to have gotten even worse since then. The Paul-bots are dfinitly a threat. They tend towards tin-foil hat positions and go out of their way to poush out anyone who is not "Ron Paul pure" ... including many who supported Ron Paul! In Vegas, the county GOP committee recently purged itself of Paul-bots because of their sheer and utter idiocy. Some of the Paul-bots were in it because they felt that it was the only way to stop Israel from conquering the Middle East (I am not kidding here). The new people are probably going to be facepalm worthy, but they will do less damage than the Paul-bots.

And Romney, who turned out to be a good deal less competent than we all hoped he was. I get that it's a big tent; that's fine. Actually, it never recovered; it was completely replaced by a genuinely conservative party that went from having only 2 seats to being the official opposition party pretty quickly. Admittedly it took that Reform Party changing to the Canadian Alliance and finally to the new Conservative Party of Canada (where Canada's RINOs, the "Red Tories", had to admit that the right had taken over the party and they had to join us and not the other way around) to finally form a government but it chipped away at the Liberals' majorities every election until the Libs only had a minority government. In that time period the federal Liberals also had to rein in the budget because it was a popular issue against them (stealing the Right's election platform) and our national credit rating was getting so effed-up that they had to do something. (Mind you, those cuts were to the military and foisted off on the provinces but balancing the budget became de rigeur.) By then the Libs also had a massive corruption problem centred around Quebec so enough people wanted them out but our Right wasn't making excuses for the Libs to placate Quebec unlike your RINOs do for Washington/White House as an analogy.

290 There isn't going to be any cathartic reconciliation this time.  When the emo "I hate you, Dad" wing of the GOP doesn't get what they want, they sit at home or leave, or vote third party like Luap Nor or Perot and pat themselves on the back for being principled.

But the only thing they do is elect more Democrats.

So why should the party pin their hopes on the Kamikaze Konservatives who prefer "burn it down" to stay and fight?  They will be marginalized because they aren't all that dependable as voters.

3 million fewer Republican voters, enough to swing the result, voted for Romney in 2012 than voted for McCain in 2008.  Romney did better with independents and social conservatives than McCain did, but lost those who declared themselves "very conservative."

Fight your primary fight, but always consider which candidate will be able to best win the general election, particularly in swing states. And when the primary is over, crawl over broken glass to vote whichever GOP candidate wins so that the Dem can't win the seat. Having someone less than ideologically pure as a conservative is far more preferable than having a liberal Democrat in the same chair, so quit kidding yourselves.

Put your big boy pants on and quit this whiny bullshit.  If it makes you feel better, just tell yourself that every time a GOP voter stays home, Reince Preibus kills a kitten.  Whatever it takes.  Only 4 of the 16 candidates endorsed by the Tea Party for Senate seats in 2012 won, and I believe they were ALL open Senate seats. They aren't kingmakers, but they offer the Party a lot in terms of vision for the future, provided they are around to be a part of it.  The GOP needs the Tea Party, and the Tea party needs the GOP.
