Slow News Day Open Thread
— Ace

I'm actually looking. I'm just not finding. I'm not just sitting around scratching my butt.

Looks like it's going to be an Opinion sort of day.

Obama's declaration of high-level negotiations with John Boehner -- oh wait, I mean Iran -- is news, I guess.

CNN called Obama's speech "historic" before he even said a word.

This is a good catch, from the New Editor: some Democrats say that it's crazy to claim Obama rammed ObamaCare down our throats; it was Republicans' fault, you see.

On the other hand, Richard Trumka actually says Obama rammed ObamaCare down the nation's throat, and that's awesome.

Via @rdbrewer4 in the sidebar, a professor has been charged with taking covert upskirt/downblouse video of his students.

-A college professor who used a camera pen to secretly film under the clothing of two students explained to police that he was attempting to gather evidence that one of the women “was not wearing undergarments,” which he thought was “inappropriate,” according to a police report.

Pete Townshend just emailed me to say he was trying to prove all the child pornography that he was downloading was similarly "inappropriate."

The cops got him to crumble on his alibi. This is pretty funny:

After being read his Miranda rights, Samuelson (seen at left) claimed that he was “attempting to gather proof” that one of the women “was not wearing undergarments” in class. When asked about the occasions during which he “directed the camera pen at students’ breasts,” Samuelson “acknowledged that this activity was ‘inappropriate.’”

Oh sure, the downblouse stuff? That was inappropriate of me. I cop to that.

But I swear the upskirt shots were just to prove those dirty little girls were dressing unprofessionally.

Half-in half-out never works in a lie.*

*I'm lying. Sometimes it does. Maybe about half the time.

7 It's historic to CNN because the speech was given by Him, with an initial cap. Because they swoon when He does anything.

I've said it before, but I still think a brilliant move by the big money conservative orgs would be to hire away key IT workers tasked with building these exchanges. Tell them you can give them a 50% raise for two years and all they have to do is show up to an office turned into a gamer's den and "research" video games for  Koch Bros, Inc.

46 Since we haven't argued defunding enough already...   I received some documents at work today on just that subject.

With parts of Obamacare only a few days away from being implemented, all this talk of "de-funding" is naive, at best.

I just received 3 sets of documents from our office manager outlining our options for health insurance in the "Marketplaces" i.e. the exchanges.

All over America, small businesses have been spending time and resources compiling all of these documents - by law they must.  Not only that, but in some cases they have had to hire consultants and lawyers to analyze their plans so the business can report to the employees.

Forms include:
OMB No. 1210-0149 - "New Health Insurance Marketplace Coverage Options and You Health Coverage"
A required report to employees (from my employer) regarding the "affordability" of any company plan and whether or not the employee is qualified for subsidies.
A 7 page new notice of privacy from my insurer (customized to my particular health plan).

All of this shit is in play already.  This fight might have had some effect if done a year ago, although I doubt it.  Defunding does not un-do any of this shit.  Millions of dollars spent by businesses and untold hours getting this thing going cannot be un-done.

I wish the GOP had shown as much enthusiasm for getting Mitt Romney elected last year as they are showing for this ridiculous "de-funding" circus.  It's the law people.  Regulations, tax laws, insurance company mandates cannot be defunded.

I have heard the argument that it will "de-fund enforcement". Do you think "de-funding enforcement" will allow insurers to thumb their noses at Uncle Sam and offer clearly illegal health plans?  Is that what you think?

And, now, we have a GOP mini-war in the Senate on how best to stop Obamacare. And it is so confusing, the GOP simply looks like a bunch of buffoons or Keystone Cops.

48 I posted this yesterday (from gateway pundit) but it got all messed up:

"An Egyptian court on Monday banned the Muslim Brotherhood from carrying out any activities in the country and ordered the seizure of the groupÂ’s funds, widening a campaign to debilitate the Islamist movement of deposed President Mohammed Morsi.

“The court bans the activities of the Muslim Brotherhood organization and its non-governmental organization and all the activities that it participates in and any organization derived from it,” said the presiding judge Mohammed al-Sayed.

The court ordered the government to seize the BrotherhoodÂ’s funds and administer its frozen assets."

Of course the left assumed he was a republican, but there was no paper trail.  However, there is an article about him defunding Air Force ROTC, like any good liberal activist would do.

Proof enough for me to declare him a hero of the left.  Far more proof than any liberal would need to crucify a conservative.

i stopped watching after 20 minutes

The reason I even watched is that I heard the premise and thought "Oh man this is dumb," so I watched a trailer, and the trailer had lots of Revolutionary War era scenes, and I love that period, so I watched it. (Basically the scenes in the trailer are all the scenes in the show.)

My California friend watched it and pronounced it insufferable.  Apparently (and bear in mind, I've never seen the show, nor do I want to), the whole "Headless Horseman as Terminator"  thing (with weaponry to boot)  was too much for her to take.

She said there were a few good shots of modern Sleepy Hollow, though.

110 "With parts of Obamacare only a few days away from being implemented, all this talk of 'de-funding' is naive, at best."

Which is why the "everyone into the pool" strategy is preferred instead.

Fully fund Obamacare. With the caveat that the funding bill SPECIFICALLY AS LAW must remove all special exemptions and carve-outs. Shove Congresscritters and their staffs into the exchanges. Do it to the unions, too.

Suppose you ask persons X and Y if they're willing to, for the general good, force their neighbor Z to eat a steaming shit sandwich.

Then suppose you next ask X and Y if they're willing to make Z eat a steaming shit sandwich for the general good, on condition that they also each eat one themselves. The response from X and Y will be a lot less enthusiastic, I guarantee you.

X are Congress. Y are the unions. Z are the general public.

113 Unions really do breed nothing but animosity between management and labor. It's unhealthy. Absolutely. I'm a software guy, no union at my work. I complain mostly about marketing not doing enough. I know lots of Boeing guys though. They CAN'T COMPLAIN ENOUGH about management. They know every little move. They can't stop. You know how when people inside a work group get together, they'll complain about work. But outside of that group they'll tell you about new projects, new people, fun things they did, etc. Not freaking Union people. They will tell people outside of work every little detail about how management is screwing them at every turn.

123 The only "leaders" in the world who haven't measured Obama and found his weakness reside in the US Congress.

Everyone else has found out how to exploit him.

It's kinda like in football: You will see the next big thing, everyone will talk about it, it'll win games. And then--someone beats it. Everyone copies and it becomes a footnote.

Iran will copy Putin and get what ever they want.

I said it earlier, Obama does not work in the traditional male power hierarchy.

And that's why they are getting what ever they want: Every strategy has a weakness, like paper-scissors-rock.

Obama's weakness is his power base, those who follow him and those who prop him up: He has to look strong to them.

Go after them, court them, or weaken Obama before them and you will get anything you want from Obama.

Cruz, in forcing Obama to attack, is weakening him.

McConnell, McCain and Boener prefer sharing power with Obama, taking whatever he doles out to them via the dinners, phone calls, etc. Those things that let them share a little bit of the spotlight with the strongman. They prefer to keep and gain status under Obama. It's easy: As long as they let him win, he will keep them in their stations. They don't want to change that and that is why they are propping him up.

I watched the first one. Eh, not horrid but they did try to cram an awful lot into one episode.

I get that revealing the premise is supposedly required of most pilots. It's just that it seems like since they've expedited all of the elements of the story, they're going to have to come up with freak of the week storylines ala X-Files.

One big obnoxious thing is the bullshit historicisms they're trying to drop here and there. The dialog between black deputy and Ichabod in which he asks if she's been emancipated was nonsense. There were free blacks in the US at the time of the RevWar. Plus any sub-moron would have recognized a uniform that read "SHERRIFF DEPT" on it.

Yeah, understood that the macguffin here is 'magic,' but the HHorseman who knows instinctively how to operate an M4/M16 and the continuous racking of the shotty? Yeah, prolly needed sequence of him in undead bootcamp in hell or something for believability's sake.

143 A lot of tv shows have been canceled. They weren't horrible but they were boring. Same old premise. One thing about BB is that they did come up with something new and they did tell a story. I read where Kurt Sutter attacked Bozell for critizing the school shooting episode, which he was right to do. Sutter told some b.s. story that it was justified bc his protagonists sell guns and he wanted to show the adverse affects of selling these guns. Well, Jax's kids didn't get killed. And then they murdered the mother and her bf of the kid who used Jax's gun to shoot up the school. They did it so the cops wouldn't trace the gun to them. Yet, the mc gang is still seen as heroes. What bullshit. There is not one likeable character on that show.

172 Tom Cruise divorced Nicole Kidman when she was pregnant with his child when he left her because she would not convert to scientology.  He then took custody of their adopted children, told them she was a "suppressive" and refused to allow her any contact with them.   Then he got the head of Scientology, Miscavage, to hold auditions to find him a new wife (Katie Holmes).  Katie Holmes saw what happened to Kidman, and planned her escape like she was fleeing Iran.  Scientology sounds like a vey bad thing to me if it separates non believers from their children

Word. Bret Stephens' "Striking Deals With Despots" piece in the WSJ is worth a read, along the same lines.

Anyone read or watch Persepolis? It is a perfectly distilled narrative representation of the folly of the Iranian Revolution, and the evils of their new bosses, worse than the old bosses. Lefties always rave about it being one of the best graphic novels ever, because Satrapi is a raging feminist lefty commie, but I don't think any of them actually READ the thing, or they never would have blindly supported the Arab Spring. They'd have realized, as I did to my horror, that history was just repeating itself all over again.

Obama is incapable of actually studying history, even when simply and powerfully depicted in comic book form, and learning from it. He's walking into a huge blunder with Iran and doesn't even know it; then he'll skate away after his presidency is over and WE are all left suffering.

When Mr. Obama speaks to the UN General Assembly (GA) Tuesday morning, heÂ’ll face a skeptical audience mindful that just two weeks earlier, Obama was prepared to bypass the UN and the Security Council to bomb Syria over the use of chemical weapons in the civil war there.

For much of the international community, that posture was reminiscent of President George W. Bush and his unilateral decision to invade Iraq in 2003 after having deemed the UN “irrelevant.” Obama’s finger on the Syria trigger made him look to the world like other US presidents: ready to use the military might of the world’s sole superpower."

240 if you can find a local filling station.

Posted by: artisanal 'ette at September 24, 2013 12:59 PM (IXrOn)

A local nursery has a refill station, and it's $19 for a 20 pound refill.

I'll bet you can find one pretty close....it's not something you would ever notice if you don't actually use them.

My grill is one of those propane/charcoal types.  Did the propane bottle exchange dealio  at first.    On about the third bottle of propane, I got much less grill time out of it.  Asked about that at the exchange store and was told, "for safety reasons,   they are only filling the bottles about halfway."  Same price, half the propane.

So I have a large pile of charcoal bags now.

242 I'll have to test it sometime, but sometimes I get the feeling that I don't get all the propane I paid for when I swap.  It feels like the tank was at 75% from certain places.

250 Fatman Joe, maybe the people working on your home are trying to pay back for a good done for them, or trying to make up for a harm they caused.  Or maybe doing the work keeps them from thinking about their own problems and makes them feel good.  There are other things at work that you do not know, so accept their help with grace, not shame.  It may be helping them as well.  My sister is a recovering alcoholic, and she volunteers like that.  Makes her feel like she is paying back, making up for some harm done, and not narcissistically focusing on her own concerns.  Its like an antidepressant for her.  It helps her.

253 In exclusive comment to Breitbart News, former ESPN and CBS broadcaster and former Southern Methodist University and NFL star tailback Craig James criticized former employer Fox Sports Southwest for its firing of him two weeks ago over his public stance on same-sex marriage.

JamesÂ’s first day on air was August 31. It went well. Nonetheless, on September 1, Heidtke called James to inform him that he had been fired. The reason, said Heidtke, was that somebody higher up in the chain of command had been made aware of JamesÂ’s comments during his unsuccessful 2012 senate run about same-sex marriage.

He was fired because he said he doesn't support gay marriage and there won't be one mention of this in the MFM. But imagine if he was fired because he did support it. The MFM and Commiewood would be screaming non stop about it

Well, there goes my theory.

I'd thought the Muslim jihad would be lots less virulent had the kids involved grown up with square breakfasts of bacon and eggs, with maybe a few pieces of toast thrown in,  followed by lots of healthy  Guiness as they reached adolescence.  But here  we see an Irish-born Brit who probably feasted on bacon, eggs and beer all through her life, now potentially caught  killing  innocents out  shopping for school shoes.

Time for a new theory.

281 Pete Townshend wasn't downloading child porn. Authorities found that his credit card number had been used to purchase an account at a child porn site. Townshend had done this as part of his research while writing a book about child abuse (of which he was a victim) and to prove his publicly stated complaints about how easy it is for predators to purchase child porn on the internet Police confiscated Townshend's computers, but found no evidence he had ever downloaded images of child pornography. He was given a caution, and that is all. I am a big Townshend fan, so you can accuse me of bias - but I also know enough about what happened to tell you that what you wrote in your post very nearly amounts to libel.
