5 Twitchy is really reaching when a Joan Rivers joke about Travolta is made a big deal. It's Joan Rivers. The older she gets the raunchier she gets. Speaking of, one could skip the Oscars and see everything worth seeing just by tuning into her E show tomorrow.

Do a shot every time Seth McFarlane repeats the same joke over and over in a Ted, Stewy, Brian, or Peter voice

Do a shot every time Seth McFarlane bashes Christians or gun owners in a Ted, Stewy, Brian, or Peter voice

Do a shot every time Seth McFarlane points to an actor in the audience and does the referential "reminds me of the time me and (celebrity) ... " in his Peter voice

Do a shot every time the camera pans to Lena Dunham for no reason. Two shots if the camera pans to Lena Dunham because Seth McFarlane says "reminds me of the time me and Lena Dunham"

Do a shot every time Seth McFarlane lectures America on gay marriage through a sarcastic joke

Do not do a shot every time a Republican is bashed, no human liver can withstand it

440 #403  sven,  her show is on WIBC and I sometimes hear her.  I can't get over knowing (from a friend in St. Louis) that she was a democrat until suddenly,  she saw the light with the Tea Party,  where she suddenly got to somehow being on the stage all the time.

Then she signed on with CNN.  Breitbart picker her up and suddenly she is the "expert."  meanwhile,  on her radio show she is pretty obnoxious, not winning converts if you ask me.

SO,  since she is so "brave" about the culture but will not bother to answer me and instead blocked me,  I don't give a fig about what she thinks.

This is NOT to say that people here shouldn't watch the Oscars.  I just don't have any interest and since I am on 3 BP meds,  I just will not have it on.  Just like I don't watch Obama if I can avoid it.

"Family Guy" regularly records 20 and more players at a time.

505

Some women ask "why do men make such a big deal about guys tossing a ball around"

Yeah, I knew that was coming - it's the obvious rejoinder - and here's my answer: athletic events display athleticism, so if you enjoy athleticism, there ya go. It doesn't have to involve a ball; track and field is interesting, to see the limits of human performance, and to watch truly gifted athletes perform near super-human feats. (I like sprinters, who are amazing.)

Moreover, many athletic events (real ones, not bullshit ones like figure skating, whose outcome is decided by judges) entail head to head competition (i.e., conflict), which makes them of a piece with all literature (man vs. man, man vs. nature, etc.). The issue is in doubt; how it turns out depends on the performance of the principals on the day. In this respect sporting events are no different than, e.g., courtroom dramas. It is in our nature to struggle, and competitive athletics represent a ritualized form of that struggle. (So does chess, for that matter.)

I would argue that athletics (and chess and such) tap into primal instincts in humans to compete, to find meaning and interest in conflict, and enjoyment in the resolution of such. For men, in particular, to live is to compete. (Yeah, I know women compete for men, but men compete for everything.)

But I don't see the attraction of awards ceremonies. I watch the Super Bowl, and the World Series (but not the NBA, as I'm not a criminal, and hence can't relate), but I wouldn't watch, e.g., the awarding of the Heisman Trophy. I don't give a shit about awards; they're conferred by people, and thus subject to corruption. Some even think that the Nobel Peace Prize is bullshit. (Imagine!)

So I return to my original point: I don't see the attraction of the Oscars, and by extension, any and all awards ceremonies.

Bill Maher is a human cockroach, who should be crushed.  And I don't mean figuratively.  If Dana Loesch wants to fraternize with people like that and thinks this is a tactic in winning an engagement in "die Kultur Kamp", she's and imbecile.

We don't achieve anything by engaging him ...at all.
Ignore him, ignore Seth MacFarlane, ignore the tripe these imbeciles pump out. Go find something else to do.

Andrew Breitbart was a very bright and engaging man, but I think he was wrong about trying to engage with pop culture.  I understand his tactics worked for him (to a degree), but I actually question what he accomplished.  In the aftermath of his death, the hate and vitriol spewed about him by the alleged 'liberals' just goes to show where the "culture war" is going.  Yeah, that was a big victory.

I went to a gunshow back home this morning, ran into a former coworker from 20 years ago when I ran the pizza joint while buying dad some ammo for the 1851 Navy Colts I gave him....

he is a nurse now and far more conservative than when we met.

His analysis of where things are pretty much matched mine and given I had had him pegged in our youthful time at college and the pizza joint together as a JFK Donk it did my heart good to have a man of intelligence, and sound character from my past pretty much match my read of where we are headed precisely because he and I while friendly were politically in different camps at the time.

He said two things far more succinctly than I had put it.

1) we're building a bomb as a nation right now

2) the dutiful people instead of the beautiful people are about to be literally enslaved.

Still, I don't want to hear that I'm the problem if I choose to disengage from pop culture, because I think pop culture is mostly garbage. She has done a lot of work in St. Louis over the years, and gets out there and participates. Obviously, I respect that. She does seem to have the impression that she is a lot more in tune with what wins converts than she really is. Her radio show isn't going to win hearts and minds. It's someone trying too hard and it's a bit unbearable even for someone that mostly agrees with her, and I'll leave it at that.

Probably best as since I became conservative (or just finally admitted it), I just wait to be annoyed watching stuff like this. Seth was NOT the annoying little Rat that I was expecting. I know how you feel about spiders but am unclear on your feelings about ants, especially giant ones. Luckily, the giant insect only appears for a few seconds and the film doesn't have a lot of these types of scenes. Anyway I'd highly recommend the film! Respectfully submitted.

693 662 NDH,

I was very flattered....I posted "a lot." But Richard Grenell and i really did have Tapper's ear and attention with regards to the outright lies on Benghazi and iran the administration campaigned on, no joke.  I am not egotistical enough to think that my entry into Tapper's rolodex was not mostly because I was being used by grenell on researching Iranian military capability and making the case from an FM 3-24 standpoint on the structural flaws of Obama's drone wars MB enabler air game and I *did* make real, well written, decent cases.

I am not being cocky and I am absolutely not falsely elevating myself to a strata of punditry I do not have right to claim, I wrote as here a lot of stuff in my shorthand style that is far too cryptic on Twitter, BUT I suspect perhaps what we need to do is have a distributed series of tasks for a semi-organized empowerment of our social media all stars to better use and coordinate our strengths as right-leaning minds.

We all have a part to play, and I am not fit to carry Ace or IowaHawk's jockstrap but were i called upon by either to "build me a case with links and supporting underlying thesis on *x* probably could help give our best wits wickedly focused rants ala Steyn.

At any rate this was rather more than ~240 characters, and part of my flaw as a twatter.

NDH please bear in mind sincerely I bear you no ill will and am not dickish enough to be as egotistical as i may seem.

regards,
sven

696 #684  Not watching the show,  as I detest these people.

The dress thing is a female interest,  which I don't expect most guys to understand.  It's nice that thee was a thread for us,  since every weekend there are football and racing threads and such.

I find it interesting that these actresses,  which often see fit to tell us how to think because they are so much smarter than us average folk,  do not have the sense to know what colors and styles would make them look better.  I mean,  their JOB is to look good on camera,  right?  So why in the hell do they show up in these hideous outfits?  And not all,  but a lot of them ARE hideous!

772 Catherine Zeta Jones is, as always, stunning.    What the hell she sees in that leftist dwarf of a hubby    of hers    I will never understand.

773 Kristen Stewart is a picture of grace.  Did she learn to walk by watching ducks?

775 Catherine Zeta Jones is awesome. And Raiders is the best action film ever made.

They should just give up on having an actual host for the Oscars and have everything read by a computer in a Stephen Hawking-style voice.      It'd be a helluva lot more entertaining.

781 Jessica Chastain's gown would look better if it didn't look like the bodice was    begging for more breast to fill it up.   Ladies, straps are good.  They're your friend.   You're welcome to wear gowns that use them.   Really.

782 seriously seth macfarlane's career has been levitating on gas fumes for a while now, pure momentum... this is bad for him. This would be good, though: http://www.breitbart.com/InstaBlog/2013/02/24/I-Want-to-Be-In-the-World

790 Shit. They have to inject politics into every frigging aspect of life? Is there no place we can go, no space unpolluted by this shit? What's next, their photos in churches and synagogs? Is there no aspect of our lives they will leave unmolested?

793 It's going to be agony when they leave office and have to get off the stage. I guess they'll be doing mall openings.

794 Kristen Stewart did a good job portraying Joan Jett in The Runaways. I haven't seen any of her other roles, but yeah, she always looks stoned, disinterested, and unglamorous in real life. I guess the very worst bit of the night was the Melissa McCarthy/Paul Rudd thing where they pretended to be bad cartoon voice actors. It was like the two of them realized one-third of the way into the bit that it would not work, and they just gave up even trying, and let it lay there like a stinking dead fish. Sound mixing problems all night. Bad bad bad unflattering lighting on the stage where Gere/Zellweger/Zeta-Jones et al came out. RZ has never looked so bad; I felt so embarassed for her.
