So Who Else Retires?
— CAC

With the announcements of Reps Wolf and Matheson's retirements today, we saw a potential R-D seat swap in the House's roll call. Some excitement for Mia Love, some for the hundred or so Republicans and Democrats who will jump at the chance to win VA-10, but nothing particularly earth-shattering. What would intrigue me a lot more: a Democratic Senator pulling a last-minute retirement announcement.

Think I'm dreaming? Ben Nelson waited until the last week of 2011 to announce he was going to retire rather than see his ass mashed into paste over his Obamacare vote. Unlike the vulnerable Democrats discussed for this cycle, he was trailing badly in polls, but if any candidate's private polling paints an uglier picture for them than their campaign is letting on, and they want to avoid the heartache of a humiliating loss, they still have plenty of time to bow out.

Rockefeller, Baucus, Johnson, Levin and Harkin all announced their retirements much earlier in the cycle, leaving Republicans with solid pickup opportunities in West Virginia, Montana, and South Dakota; a draw in Michigan; and putting them slightly behind in Iowa. Each of these retirements inch the Republicans closer to majority status, and an additional retirement would mean Republicans can win the Senate without targeting a single Democrat incumbent. Unseating someone like Pryor or Hagan would then just be icing on the cake.

So who do you think may decide to throw in the towel?

They have no magic bullet, no rabbit to pull out of their hat. The liberals aren't going to win because the polls show support for the left is collapsing..All those life long democrats retiring.

So we elected Obama.

16 Just barely posted this in last thread, going to repost here w/ some additions:

142 First shots across the bow at the Mia Love campaign from the Utah dems comes from a statement by Jim Debakis, Utah state senator. She's in bed with the tea party which is too extreme for Utah, she's wrong for Utah, blah blah blah. I sense fear. They were relying on Matheson to hold on, big time. Her election this fall COULD possibly be a canary in the coal mine for Lee's reelection chances; she sails through he is fine, she tanks and he might have a fight for reelection. A tea party referendum of sorts.

Hatch's old campaign manager volunteered to head her team this time. I'm afraid he's gonna do her like the McCain campaign did Palin, ie muzzle her, but hopefully not. He will make sure that the "too extreme" handle the dems are trying to put on her won't hold water, but hopefully keep in the forefront the enthusiasm and passion that is so great about her.

"Today, along with Senators Blumenthal, Brown, Leahy, Markey, Shaheen, and Whitehouse, I am introducing a bill to stop employers from requiring prospective employees to disclose their credit history or disqualifying applicants based on a poor credit rating.
... ...
Highly qualified applicants with bad credit can be shut out of the job market. That's wrong.

Let's be honest: This is one more way the game is rigged against the middle class. A rich person who loses a job or gets divorced or faces a family illness is unlikely to suffer from a drop in his or her credit rating. But for millions of hard-working families, a hard personal blow translates into a hard financial blow that will show up for years in a credit report."

Actually, as an observer of politics from Commiefornia, I have a sneaking suspicion that Dianne Feinstein may retire rather than stand again next cycle. She's getting awfully old.

Before anyone gets excited over that, remember that Feinstein was just re-elected in 2012, so it'll be a few years yet before she bows out. And since we're talking about Commiefornia, whomever it is who replaces her is guaranteed to be a liberal Democrat who is as odious if not more so than she is.

(Whenever you hear nitwit Beltway Republicans talking about how amnesty will revive the GOP demographically, remind them that California was once "Reagan Country", but it has been solid blue for a while now, in large measure due to the 1986 amnesty Reagan foolishly let himself get elbowed into signing.)

149 "Waxman's district is West LA. Take a look at Nancy Pelosi's disctrict. Same demographics."

I have no idea what's going on in Waxman's district, but Pelosi's has been turning Chinese at a pretty astonishing clip.

Pelosi has run a tidy racket funneling lots of federal cash to the Chinese-American machine in SF run by Rose Pak. Most recently a Chinatown subway extension that prices out at a BILLION DOLLARS A MILE in construction costs.

Lots of Pak-connected pockets are getting lined with that money. But Pelosi isn't explicitly a proxy for Pak. Only an ally. Pelosi is instead a creature of the earlier liberal machine created by the Burton brothers: Italians, Irish and Jews made up that one. But Italians and Irish are fading forces in SF.

When Pelosi retires, she will be replaced by someone who is a pure catspaw for Pak. Which will not in any way clean up any of the sordid corruption in that district. It'll just be a new ruthless machine elbowing in to take over the role of the previous ruthless machine.

169 You're going to see more retirements, but I wouldn't count on some deep blue incumbent Senator retiring like Durbin out of fear.  But anyone in a purple or Red State is likely a dead man walking.  I also think better quality candidates are going to step up to the plate on the GOP side down the ballot.  Here in AZ, Democrats are running scared.  Big names aren't running this time around.

Al Franken is going to be in a tougher race than he realizes, Republicans CAN win statewide in MN, especially in midterm elections.  And Franken is not a high quality candidate, he won only through fraud in a generational landslide for Obama.

I also tire of the moby "it doesn't matter if the GOP wins, they're all socialists" meme.  Reid is doing his damndest to pack the Court, it DOES make a difference.  The judge Brian Cogan that just gave a smackdown to ObamaCare was appointed by George W. Bush and confirmed by a Republican Senate.

How about we wait until we take back the Senate before we automatically decide the GOP will screw us on ObamaCare?

Gather you haven't been following the Senate confirmation-a-thon going on over the last week.  The Republicans are for the most part just rubber stamping Obama's nominees as usual.

There's always going to be some form of that on both sides, but it does make a difference with respect to controversial appointments AND with something like a Supreme Court nomination.  Both in who gets confirmed and who gets nominated.

I know this is heresy in TruCon fever swamps, but I'd rather take my chances with McConnell as majority leader over Harry Reid.

We also know who Obama would prefer to keep an ObamaCare repeal off his desk that he's going to have to veto and explain to the American people.

@115, I would vote for Bayh over Chris Christie and maybe even Jeb Bush.

That being said Maddow would never let him be the Donks candidate, she still hates him for cutting and running with 13 million back in 2010.

173 Mitch McConnell to retire.....I wish.

174 Actually, if Anyone retires it will likely either be Enzi or Roberts. I'm mildly surprised Cochran decided to run again. McDaniels got impatient and jumped the gun and I guess angered the hornets nest or something, that or the Porker Establishment don't think anyone other then Cochran could beat McDaniels. Dumb move. Cochran has been in Washington since the 60s and McDaniel is competitive even with low name recognition and only campaigning for about a month.

175 I really hope the Iowa Republican party can field a candidate that is not an imitation Democrat, but i'm not holding my breath over it. You wouldn't think the Democrats could find anyone worse than Tom Harkin, but there's always Roxanne Conlin.

176 171.

Evan Bayh voted for ObamaCare.  Don't you think this Republican Civil War is getting out of hand when you're saying you would vote for a Democrat Senator that put ObamaCare into law?

Don't buy into the whole "moderate Democrat" bullshit.  Evan Bah is a left-winger, he just lives in a conservative state, so he has to pretend otherwise.  If he represented Massachusetts, he'd be a proud Socialist.

177 none of them. Alaska has a three way primary on the R side. Pryor too vain. Landrieu already running against herself.
