— Ace Reporters say they just want to report the facts, but the dirty little secret is that they're chiefly interested in Reporting Themselves. They wish to advance in the pack; they wish to be the stars -- rather than the recorders -- of their stories; and they desperately, desperately wish to not merely report to you the facts but to insist upon what you should believe the facts mean.
There are too many examples of this to recount. Here's one that just caught my eye.
It's pretty clear to me Michael Scherer thinks he's a STAR...!!! and stars streak across the sky, baby.
Social media is like alcohol. It's addictive, and it reveals who you really are.
Michael Scherer can walk back and "add context" and "explain what he meant" all he likes. But he's revealed himself; he is firmly on Team Leftwing and when he's not working, he's snarking about Republicans.
Yes, his idea of "time off" is to snark about Republicans. That's not his job; that's what he does in his pleasure-time.
His point, of course, is stupid. Jindal is pointing out that rather than solve the problem, Obama is focused -- as usual -- on solving the PR problem; and Jindal, as both a high official, a politically invested analyst, and a governor of a state which will be affected by the sequester, is right to criticize Obama.
But does that mean Obama should ignore the actual problems of governance and instead focus solely on his PR pass-the-buck strategy? In Michael Scherer's world, it means exactly that, because he is engaged in the mythmaking function of fiction, and fiction has Designated Heroes and Designated Villains.

Ace, here's a little something rockmom posted in the Lanny Davis thread. It ties in directly to what you're talking about here - social media as addictive substance.
------
"338 OMFG, I just got into it with some douche from Mediaite who posted his column about Woodward taking it in the shorts from the "media elite." I asked him, what media elite, Woodward IS the media elite. Do his critics have multiple Pulitzers, bestsellers, movies made of them? His reply, "no but they have Twitter accounts and are not afraid to use them."
Ladies and gentlemen, your new Media Elite: kids on Twitter.

And Bob Woodward says it is now officially alright to go and complain about the Obama Administration. I expect a few more passive-aggressive attacks in the future, and I expect a heavy handed reaction (again). And then I expect a few more attacks. And repeat.
The administration cannot stay away from the PR game, it is all they have. And while I can understand the abuse it gives the press (the toady always receives contempt not love - see Saruman and Wormtongue), a little kindness and ego-stroking here and there goes a heck of a long way. And I am quite satisfied that concept is unknown to the administration.

Back when I was a kid I was warmonger, tool. I used to watch The Big Picture, The Twentieth Century, Victory at Sea and their ilk which were military history documentaries. I believed every word. When I grew older and realized that there was a lot of fudging of the facts, such as showing a dramatic aircraft allegedly during the Battle of Midway when that aircraft type wasn't operational until years later, I was absolutely stunned. The bias then was pro-American and, especially, pro-dramatic footage but I couldn't believe it when I found out they had been lying to me all these years.
P.S. Cronkite hosted The Twentieth Century.

Hmm, interesting, ace. But far from saying the story "fizzled," I think it simply lends credence to what you're saying here. Being a "reporter" these days isn't about actually reporting the stories. It's about MAKING the stories. And you're not the only one who sees it; Rothman is saying essentially the same thing in his response to rockmom.
I find it interesting that, in all other things, the left is obsessed with "credentialism." But when that credentialism is used in a way that might damage their precious narrative, it's discarded and used as a club instead of a badge of honor. "Woodward USED to be great. But now he's just old and senile. His years of experience? Meh. He's washed up."

Correct, openly partisan media is arguably better for a democracy and the media because what happens is that the intelligent voter when events do not transpire according to an editorial narrative is tempted to rethink his analysis of the events being reported and strategic implications in play.
This is basic game theory stuff.
The media when challenged by partisan rivals has a responsibility to balance the best partisan gain with the proper blend of fact and PR work for their cause.
What has happened in the broadcast era is corporate domination by rent seeking agencies hiring one editorial bent.
There is one hand clapping and what does it sound like?

there was not ONE question about Benghazi?

As I said, the MSM is a party mechanism. I have literally heard editors discussing how to present a story so as to minimize the damage to the democrat party.

ACK!
Um, okay. Stay calm. Just... look, don't move, all right? They can smell fear.
Okay. Breathe. But don't breathe too deeply because, you know, poisonous fumes.
Now, these weasels: Are they also standing in the viscous fluid? If so, how high would you say you can go in a vertical jump?

Also, you can clean up any pastes by clicking on the lesser-than and greater-than arrows on the far right at the top in the tool bar of the comment box. (I'll put them in here to show you but I don't think they'll get thru the filter: <>
that will bring up a box that will show you the "raw" html of what's in the comment box so far.
You can then delete the offending paras and other nonsense out then click "apply" in that window and then "ok" and you're back to the comment box with clean text. Now you can insert spaces and returns to format your comment.
The one thing left to us that works for the comments. (no ampersands though)

Amen. I made a point shortly above this post about the "game theory" implications of the media bobsled course Ace.
I am not being a nut or a psycho militia bomb throwing retard.
I have serious plans to try to build something down in Allen G's part of the world at some point. No matter what structural differences you and I have had over this decade and change of perusing each others' posts your output far more worthy of mine never forget I have always been a fan and respected you. You are definitely if not "the leader" the first among equals in many ways.
I do hope if the day ever does get dark enough in your analysis you will come south and try to make a go of things locally.
We need to try to grow something real and it will be far easier together than apart as an entire group.
The ground is choppy and the sea may be nigh unpassable but together our side of the aisle on the notion of inherent rights of man can likely weather ANY storm.
Anyway enough hyperbole I look forward to your and the CoBloggers output.

Who cares about that. The reason I watch it over and over again is that it has the best film footage of 1950's airpower I've ever seen. It was when America was strong and grateful for it's freedom.

Woodward is an Icon.
He was played by another Icon, Robert Redford, in the movie about him.
An Icon, you guys.
And now, Barky's thralls are going to say that Woodward is...suddenly senile?
How does one get 'Suddenly Senile'?
Does that mean that Robert Redford is now...Suddenly Senile?
Is Bill Clinton now...Suddenly Senile?

Yup, and as I once said to Tapper "A is A" Tapper was not instantly geared to accept that there is in fact "truth." My read of Tapper is that his ethical bent is based mostly on analysis of historic precedent not a deeply pondered and reasoned read of philosophy or the understanding of the role of epistemology in the cognitive construct of "news." The Marxist media has tried throughout history to bend reality to the Party's needs and thus far because there was a beacon on the hill to crib Reagan reality always won...and relatively quickly.
I still believe reality will win, but I don't think so quickly or relatively painlessly sand our being the beacon.

Make an unwise comment in a public place about Stalin or Lenin or Khrushchev and suddenly you're in a hospital being diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression and getting a horse tranq.
And THAT'S if you were lucky.

"twitter account and not afraid to use it"
Which cliche applies :
"He who hesitates is lost"
or
"Fools rush in where angles fear to tread".
or
"Pride goeth before a fall"
or
"Out of the mouth of babes"
or
An expert is someone from out of town. (Fallacy of the unidentified expert; appeal to authority, Credentials, certification, and pedigree.)

I used to watch them too. I loved them. However the caveat was my WWII combat vet Dad. He liked to watch them too, but filled in the details of how much it sucked.
It didn't make me that much less of a tool...except I probably was a bit more sanguine then the average tool when I enlisted in '68. My Dad's advice on how to survive was quite politically incorrect nowadays, but obviously valid.
