Some Stuff About ObamaCare and the Shut Down
— Ace

I don't know why President Genius has such a hard time explaining 404Care. It's all so simple.

Ezra Klein recounts all the previous shutdown gambits. It's actually useful reading, apart from his belief that he's cute and/or funny. Shutdowns are not especially uncommon, certainly not "unprecedented," and are always resolved via compromise.

What's unprecedented about this shutdown is that Reid and his Second Banana Obama refuse to compromise. Which is, again, how these things have always ended in the past.

Matt Yglesias is paid to say stupid things:

If you're an adult man and the public tone you're going for is "Bratty," you need to sit down and reevaluate your Life Choices.

Bratty is only cute in children. And hot chicks who are DTF. And no one else.

This Bratty tone favored by the "Young Guns" of the online left was always repellent, but it's especially such as the "Young Guns" deteriorate further into Middle Age.

Patterico suggests that we don't call it a shutdown, as it isn't one. Eh, call it a Partial Furlough.

Democrats consider releasing Boehner's emails, in a sort of blackmail attempt.

Senate Democrats are considering leaking a series of emails between the chiefs of staff of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker John A. Boehner regarding employer contributions to congressional staff health care plans, multiple top-level sources said late MondayÂ…

Senate Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin, D-Ill., described the emails to lobbyists at a dinner on Capitol Hill on Monday night, telling those present that they would be leaked within a day, according to someone who attended the event. When asked if he talked about leaking the emails at dinner, Durbin did not deny the conversation: “I have heard about [the emails] but I have not seen any. … All I’ll say is that I’ve heard there are emails but I have not seen them.”

Gerrymandering and other factors suggest that the GOP won't pay a price for the shutdown like they did in 95-96.

This suggests that even if a public backlash develops against a shutdown or potential government default, Republican members may be far more insulated against those gales than their counterparts were during the two shutdowns in the winter of 1995 and 1996. Today's GOP legislators, for the same reason, also may be less sensitive to shifts in public attitudes that could threaten their party's national image or standing in more closely contested parts of the country.

Comparing today's 232-seat Republican majority with the 236 seats Republicans ultimately held after special elections and party switches from 1995-96 underscores the extent to which GOP legislators have succeeded in fortifying themselves into homogeneously conservative districts. On every measure, Republicans today represent constituencies that lean more lopsidedly toward their party.

And Gallup suggests that the GOP really didn't even pay much of a political price in 95-96 in the first place.

Update: Just in June, The Atlantic reported how Awesome the 404Care software was going to be.

"It's fast, built in static HTML, completely scalable and secure," said Bryan Sivak, chief technology officer of HHS, in an interview. "It's basically setting up a web server. That's the beauty of it."

Nailed it, dude.

You know how they know it's "too" popular? It doesn't work. The fact that it's impossible to use demonstrates how awesome it is. If it wasn't popular it would probably work perfectly. Probably.

86 If an airline company had passengers on a jet, and wouldn't let them off until they all paid another fee, what would you call it?

If a manufacturer had a labor union doing a 'job action' where you couldn't buy the product unless you paid more money, what would you call it, and would you buy the product?

If a school system refused to give the students grades at the end of the school year until you had paid more money to the teacher's unions, if your government told you the only food you could buy was beans and rice and you could only buy it at a government store, and when you went there to buy it, the store was closed or there wasn't any beans and rice, or you had to more pay money at the door to get out, what would you call it?

Since this is government doing all these things, and since you could get arrested for talking about getting a new government, it looks like what?

Once more.... the ONLY reason there is a shutdown, is that Congress did not do their job, in doing the apropriations bills.

161 Static HTML is as scalable as you can get. The only work the server does is outputting simple files to its connections. No, because one Web server is only capable of maintaining X connections at once no matter what. So any time you need to scale up or out, you either have to modify the HTML to reflect the changes on the hardware, or you have to do a lot of config work to make the hardware transparent to the the HTML files. ItÂ’s also about as secure as you can get, because if it doesnÂ’t have anything but static HTML it isnÂ’t accepting any data. That's potentially true. But at the very least it means you're giving away server architecture information (if you have any links whatsoever in your document). Eh, real content management software (ie, everything but Minx) has the option to render each page once to static HTML and serve that until someone comments or whatever. I'm guessing that's what he meant. Based on him gushing about "basically setting up a web server" as though that *weren't* something that happened hundreds (thousands?) of times every day in the US, I'm guessing not.

194 No, because one Web server is only capable of maintaining X connections at once no matter what. Yes, but static HTML will be delivered much, much faster than HTML that the server needs to render. So it can handle far more connections per unit time. So any time you need to scale up or out, you either have to modify the HTML to reflect the changes on the hardware, or you have to do a lot of config work to make the hardware transparent to the the HTML files. I think weÂ’re talking about different things here. If the HTML reacts to changes in the hardware, itÂ’s not static.

234 Yes, but static HTML will be delivered much, much faster than HTML that the server needs to render. So it can handle far more connections per unit time. The HTML won't care. IIS (or whatever you're using) has that limit. Sure, you can set it higher because its just static HTML, but it's still limited. And do you really think that the geniuses who designed this thought to increase that Maximum Connections in their web.config? I think weÂ’re talking about different things here. If the HTML reacts to changes in the hardware, itÂ’s not static. Depends on if you scale up or out. If you're scaling up (adding more processors/memory to your existing server) then you're mostly right (though you end up resetting the Web Server every time so it can "see" the new resources). If you're scaling out (that is: adding additional servers) and using "static HTML" then you have to modify the web pages themselves (or at least move them around) so that the various servers can all, well, serve them. I don't think he meant "static HTML" at all. I think he's some idiot suit who has no clue what any of that meant, and was spewing garbage he thought sounded good.

I once knew a really great chef. I was young and waiting tables at a fairly high-end place and the only reason it was considered a fairly high-end place is because he cooked there. Not a cook myself, I didn't (and don't) know much about the profession and asked him what separated the really good from the not-so-really-good. He said much of it was about patience.

'Sometimes you just gotta let it cook,' he said. 'Too often these guys just won't leave the food alone. They think they gotta be doing something all the time. No, man. You just gotta let it cook.'

So yeah: let it cook. All the GOP needs to do for the next few days (or weeks or whatever) is nothing. Be the Buddha statues in a stoner's living room. Don't act or react at all, not for awhile. Let the Democrats jump and worry for a change.

242 209 @KellyO Senate Democrats say at this point they would not accept House GOP plan to fund Vets, National Parks. Full govt funding only. But Republicans are the ones who refuse to negotiate. I'm telling you, if the Republicans were smart* they'd win this so well that they might actually have a chance to dismantle OCare. *-In fairness, they're playing this better than I'd feared. So far. --- Depends who is running things for the Republicans. If I were Boehner, I'd be rolling out people to talk all about how they sent bills up to the Senate to fund everything being conspicuously closed down by the Dims, such as the memorials, but that Dingy Harry et all are insisting on all-or-nothing. If challenged on this, they could bring up how "well" the ObamaCare exchanges are working today as examples of expensive boondoggles that the public doesn't need to fund.

Please help us take it apart.” Posted by: Koumei Nakamura == What we "learn" from Solomon is that the mother forfeits her baby rather than see it cut in half. So Obama should relinquish Obamacide. Regarding compromise? Obama insists on selling every individual his entire beast (exemptions a la partiality, favoritism) vs. The People want no association/obligation to buy/own his beast that won't simply eat us out of jobs and home, but will consume our bodies and minds in due policy process.

I think that's why Ace included the second "in," to make sure that the cuteness applied to children AND ALSO to hot chicks who, etc.  Two parallel phrases.

If he'd written "cute in children and hot chicks who are DTF," then yes, it could be interpreted as creepy.  With the second "in," you've got two parallel, but separate, phrases.

(We're fiddling while the govt. shuts down . . .)

I hope Obama and Reid keep the Federal government shutdown for at least 3 months.  There are at least 4 reasons I can think of off the top of my head.

1) Obviously, the Feds are the limb of Satan in America.  Think of how much better life will be without IRS audits, racist Department of "Justice" lawsuits, the EPA impeding commerce, etc.

2) The shutdown hurts (potentially) Federal government employees.  Screw them, the parasites.

3) A long shutdown will allow Americans to realize just how little the Federal government does that actually impacts them one way or the other.  This will cause them to question why they are paying all those taxes.  (Well, it will cause the 50% who actually pay taxes to question.)

4) The non-impact of a long shutdown will also undermine whatever confidence remains in the leftist fountains of wisdom, Obama, the Democrat party, the legacy media and their internet wannabes.

335 If my somewhat-squishy Republican Congressman, in a classic swing suburban district that Obama carried twice, is happily voting with the Republican majority on all these CRs, you can bet the GOP is not scared of any fallout from this showdown.  The fact is people in this district HATE Obamacare and want it repealed.  They threw out the Pelosi lapdog who had the seat from 2007 to 2010, mostly because he voted for it as well as Cap and Trade.   Obama lost about 40,000 votes between 2008 and 2012 here, mostly because of Obamacare.

I am beginning to gravitate towards feudalism as a system of government.

Posted by: Vashta Nerada at October 01, 2013 02:00 PM (9T/th)"

Feudalism seems like a rather extreme over reaction.

The Spoils System seems like the right approach.  The system we have now means that all the employees of the federal government are Democrats no matter who is elected.  They have absolutely no experience in the private sector and no real connection to ordinary people who do not work for the government.  By returning to the spoils system, every few years all the government employees would be pitched out into the street and forced to look for work.  Job killing policies like Obama care, blocking the Keystone Pipeline and shutting down electric power plants would suddenly look much less attractive to them.

In addition, I suspect that there are a lot fewer lazy lackwits and idiot son in laws needing jobs among Republicans so that every time Republicans take office, they could streamline and automate government operations so that a lot fewer government workers would be needed to do the same work.

390 Be kind and sweet and funny. If you do that, guys will respond favorably to you, regardless of what you look like.

They'll peel out so fast they leave skid marks the second a pretty girl looks at them twice, but until then, they're happy letting you do kind, sweet, funny things for them.

*shrug*

392 If the compromise gives Obama and Democrats another year to get their act together - three years + not being enough - on 404Care, it also puts the pain, costs, and inconveniences beyond the midterm elections.

Why would we do that?  Obama will still be President/Dictator, presumably we will win fewer Senate seats than if the public were fully subjected to the fruits of their previous choices.  404Care isn't going to be repealed that way.

Notice also the "shutdown" had no effect on 404Care at all, because it isn't funded by the budget or the CR.  Wow, maybe someone should have thought of that before, eh?

393 "And Gallup suggests that the GOP really didn't even pay much of a political price in 95-96 in the first place"

You know what the preferred Narrative is that the media are pushing when they start to drop broad hints in advance.

About two weeks ago, the drumbeat began regarding how "voters were infuriated with Republicans after the 1995 shutdown, punishing them severely at the polls in 1996, and returning President Clinton to office".

Well, yes, Clinton was returned to office. After the GOP ran against him their equivalent of a half-living, pre-embalmed Leonid Brezhnev. And after a third-party spoiler candidate ran and pulled much bigger numbers than such candidates typically do, drawing most of those votes from the right instead of the left.

But other than Clinton having been returned to office, under circumstances that almost guaranteed his return to office, what evidence is there that voters "punished Republicans severely" at the polls in 1996? Let's run the numbers.

The GOP's seat total in the House plummeted as they were "severely punished" by voters. From 230 seats all the way down to 228. A dizzying, frightening drop of about eight-tenths of a percentage point. Leaving the GOP still easily in control of that body.

Meanwhile, the GOP lost three seats in the Senate out of 52 as they were "severely punished". Wait, no, that's not right. Actually, voters "severely punished" the GOP by handing them three NEW Senate seats, from 52 up to 55.

So, as usual, the numbers don't bear out the Narrative that the media would like.

But don't expect the media to stop with this complete hooey about how SHUTDOWNS ALWAYS HURT REPUBLICANS. Because, Narrative, and shut up, they explained.

394 A question:  who reads/follows Yglesias and Klein, and why?  Neither one is even partly honest.  Both are lying leftist hacks.

Sure, like watching Chrissie Matthews, you will get some stuff for outrage, but our base doesn't need extra stimulus for outrage.  So what's the point?

For conservative sites to continually quote these propagandists just gives them credibility they have never earned.

I'm half Sioux, but I've never bothered with getting an ID number. My Dad had one, and took advantage of the meager tribal benefits it entailed, (which are looking pretty damn generous now). You have to jump through some hoops to get them, and they may not even be available in your area though.

396 The failure of the system is just a way for the federal government to point out how primitive their computer network and system actually are.  The boondoggle will only help them get help from an american company to implement state of the art computer equipment and networks.  Watch.

398 I haven't kept fully up-to-date with web design, but this seems rather old school. The problem is that it isn't flexible or really scalable, as Allen pointed out. Plus as someone else stated, Amazon, et. al. seem to do pretty well with dynamic content. With all of the code in the pages, it's going to be fun with hackers probing the system.

399 "It's fast, built in static HTML, completely scalable and secure," said Bryan Sivak, chief technology officer of HHS, in an interview. "It's basically setting up a web server. That's the beauty of it." Bryan Sivack, as chief technology office of HHS, should know better than to spout this kind of crap. I suspect Sivack's credentials are about as good as O'Bagy's phd.
