All that is useful is simple."
-- Mikhail Kalashnikov
Comrade Kalashnikov was not just speaking of rifles. I'm just saying...
Democrats seem to generally be afflicted with a bad case of the In-theories
Here's an affliction the healthcare.gov developers did NOT have.
- "In theory, practice is easy" as they say.
- EngineerSpeak for "We need to test that". ;-)
- I want to live in Theory. Everything works in Theory.
- "In theory, practice and theory are the same thing. In practice they're not."
- "The difference between theory and reality is a lot bigger in reality than it is in theory."
Some terse commentary on test driven design
If you put off thinking about testing until you're done implementing, you're too late.*ahem*Do it right, and you can test the pieces long before you're done. Do it right and the testing can help you find your mistakes early enough to do something about them.

Walker flatly rejects the idea that Republicans need to "moderate" their views to appeal to an increasingly left-leaning electorate. "Our principles are not the problem," he argues. "If our principles were the problem, then why are so many Republican governors winning elections by campaigning on those very principles."
He points to the fact that in the era of Obama, the GOP has gone from controlling both the legislatures and governorships in eight states to controlling them in 23 states in 2013. No GOP governor, he notes, has lost a general election since 2007.
"We did not win all those races by running from our principles. We won by applying our principles in ways that are relevant to the lives of our citizens."

Here's something that bugs me:
There is this drumbeat of criticism of Obamacare from the tech cognoscenti which focuses 100% on the shitty design and deployment of the Web sites.
The sidebar link on "As Healthcare.gov Falters, Silicon Valley Cringes" is an absolutely perfect example of what I'm talking about. A bunch of inbred geeks who figure that once the people in charge of the stupid Web site RTFM and regroup, it's all smooth sailing for Obamacare from there on out.
News flash: IT'S NOT JUST THE FUCKING WEB SITE.
Even if the Web component were to have worked perfectly, the biggest issues with Obamacare are... nontechnological. They are financial and organizational and legal and regulatory. And, unfixable.
It _is_ technologically possible to get an Obamacare enrollment site up and running smoothly. What will never be possible is to get Obamacare up and running smoothly.
Put another way, the geeks seem to think that the problem here is that the boarding pass for the first-class round trip to Zurich isn't printing out. And they're arguing about how to fix the printer. Whereas the reality is that it's a boarding pass for a one-way economy-class ticket to Mogadishu. Fixing the printer will not guarantee a pleasant journey.

Starting next year I have the same plan. I still pay 100% until I hit $5000. After that they pay 80% of covered doctor expenses. The 100% drug coverage now goes to 80% and stays there. And my costs in monthly payments goes up by over 100%.
Thank you Pelosi/Obama commies. You are bankrupting 90% of America, causing over a million people to lose all their insurance, and you are adding insurance to 2,000 freeloaders who didn't have it before.

Sen. John McCain's daughter says the tea party revolution within the Republican Party has left him in a state of emotional distress.
"I’ve never heard him this depressed other than maybe after the ‘08 election," Meghan McCain said. "He’s so depressed, so down-trodden. The way he’s talking about it, he's never seen it this bad in his 30-plus years in office."
Meghan, who describes herself as a liberal Republican, said she shares his sense of despondency.
"We’re both frustrated with the idea that only the hyper-conservative wing of the party is going to represent the masses,” said McCain, 29, who spoke to ABC News about her father and her reality show, "Raising McCain."
The senator's daughter also said she was surprised by Arizona's senior senator recent comments that, at 77 years of age, he is considering another run for the Senate — but not because of his age.
"My father has more energy than I do and I legitimately say that, so itÂ’s not his age, it's just the idea of having another dirty tea party election," she said.
But she says she has no intentions of ever trying to fill her father's shoes or run for any public office.
"Women have to give up so much to run for office, which maybe makes me a hypocrite, because I think more women should be in office," McCain said. "I always say, I want more tattoos and I donÂ’t plan on getting married anytime soon so I think those two things might automatically make me not eligible for running for office."

You know what? If you're a Senator, I expect you to be able to analyze a situation and make the right choice, not scapegoat. If you aren't unusually capable in that area, why do I need you? We will see if any if that ends up mattering out there.
It won't. California is too far gone. You get to a certain point, and leftism is the only way to vote. Far more people will vote for themselves, not the welfare of the state. The only thing to do now, is wait for California's inevitable default, and slide into bankruptcy, as they continue to jack up taxes to keep the FSA happy. Productive citizens will continue to flee the fiscal cess pool, necessitating further tax increases, which will drive even more profitable businesses out of the state.
Lather, rinse, repeat, until the state rolls belly up like a dead bloated whale.

Sorry... but as someone who lives in the cesspit called California... its a different story...
Most citizens here just feel powerless. Even when we VOTE and win... the Government still does whatever it want.... Look at Gay marriage here.
We know they are blatantly violating the US Constitution... and Federal Law... but we don't have standing in court... our votes are more than balanced by illegals... and the Legislature is out of control.
But short of a Jeffersonian type of Answer? The California citizen is powerless against his own State Government.

In Europe, I have a suspicion its all faux-outrage gen'd up for public consumption. Their political leadership have all been willing accomplices in the construction of this surveillance apparatus over the past 50 years. They're pissed that the revelation may cut them off from their own share of the intel "take"

Diana did not have the royal tatas, so either your characterization is wrong, or they did away with her because of them.
Oh.

my blood boil. This project was not screwed up by the developers, it was screwed
up by the management. By "management" I mean the government agency who set
the thing up for failure and the management of CGI Federal who should have
known better. The fact that the government is bringing a whole new team to "fix"
the website just shows how clueless they are. Adding new people to a failing
project does not make it succeed, it makes it fail worse. Blaming the software
developers is chickenshit. If I were on that project I would be saying "Those
clowns screwed this up and not they're blaming me? Fuck this, I'm going to
work for some people who know what they're doing."

The things that are clear unit test fails ARE the developer's fault. Ex. the data x-mit incompatibilities.
That shit couldn't possibly ever have been unit tested.

Not if they were told not to make intermediate testing a priority but rather just finish
the code.
Not if they were told to make major design changes one month before the release date.
Not if they were told that no matter what, they could not slip the schedule.
All these things are the fault of management setting unrealistic goals and interfering in the development process.
.
The developers undoubtedly knew that the website was a mess, I don't doubt
they told their managers but management wouldn't listen.

Any developer who sticks around when disrespected like that is a damn fool.
Being a damn fool is your own fault.
Sometime walking away is the only way to retain any honor and self respect.

The moment I decide something has become physically un-salvageable, I bolt. If there's any hope I'll stay.

payments and they probably didn't count on the president pointing the finger at
them.

Anyone who takes on a job like that and DOESN'T expect to be blamed for failure is a damned fool too.
Shit flows downhill bro, always has always will.
Anyone who senses impending doom and isn't packing their parachute is a damn fool too. Programming jobs aren't in such short supply you can't line another up within 6 months.
I spent 10 years as an independent consultant never knowing where the next gig was coming from. Knowing that, I scored when I could and lived a modest lifestyle during down time just in case.
Anyone who's been in the business a while knows you need that bailout cushion.
Anyone who expects the good times to roll forever gets no sympathy from me.
