I don't know if Watterson is a liberal.  I assume he probably is but  he is insightful none the less.  Here is Calvin and   Hobbes having one of their conversations:

Calvin:  'I know more about the private lives of celebrities than I do about any governmental policy that will actually affect me.  Im interested in things tthat are none of my business,  and I'm bored by things that are important to know. "

Hobbes:  "The  media  aims to please"

Calvin:  "Maybe the economy should be discussed in cheap motel rooms."

I wonder how it would effect the whole   "mitochondrial lineage" thing.  If I'm not mistaken, mitochondrial DNA is one of the common ways of tracing     human    migration patterns.      I doubt it would ever become so widespread as to fuck up that kind of   overarching research, but it would be interesting for someone to get arrested, have their DNA checked against some database, and have the checkers say,  "Um, this person is apparently from three different    places.   Yeah, we're super confused."

" . . . Some of these holidays tend to emphasize straightforward patriotism, while holidays like Labor Day and MLK Day tend to provoke internal reflection regarding the injustices in American history.

I think we need a new holiday (or perhaps an anti-holiday) in the spirit of MLK Day and Labor Day: a day to memorialize the tremendous folly, waste, and injustice of the second Iraq War, which began on March 19 2003.

. . .

1. We need a Consequences Day first and foremost because the United States started a war on spurious grounds, and against the advice of friends and allies, and now has to pay for it. We are still dealing with and paying for the Consequences.

. . .

2. We need a Consequences Day because the U.S. invaded a country without any sort of plan for following up after the initial invasion component was completed.

. . .

3. We need a Consequences Day because many political figures (especially in the U.S. Senate) and social institutions (the New York Times, along with a huge swath of the journalistic establishment outside the Times) who might have questioned the build-up to the war, including the very vague and questionable evidence that Iraq was in possession of weapons of mass destruction, failed to ask the right questions or say "no" when they had the chance.

. . .

A number of Democrats in the Senate, for example, clearly made the calculation that voting against the war would be a political loser. The consequence ought to be that they are forced to see the error of their ways.

{There's that word again, force.  What does the writer have in  mind,  humiliation in public stockades?}

. . .

Every American is crystal-clear on what happened on 9/11, but many, if not most, are pretty fuzzy about the fallout from the Iraq War. We need a Consequences Day to rectify that.

One writer who clearly has accepted the Consequences of supporting the Iraq War is Andrew Sullivan, . . .

. . .

4. We need a Consequences Day to reflect on the many abuses of human rights conducted by American soldiers and intelligence agencies during this war, and the War on Terror more broadly. American soldiers treated prisoners unspeakably at Abu Ghraib, and the CIA widely used torture at facilities like Guantanamo and at various "black sites." The rest of the world knows that now, so that too has consequences: any American efforts to compel other countries to check the use of torture against detainees will in effect be stillborn until there is some sort of accountability for this.

. . .

Consequences Day in, short, is intended as a day of reflection and self-criticism -- borrowing something from the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur (the day of "Atonement"). It would be a day for Americans to stop and take stock of and collectively grapple with the results of this large national failure. While some of it can be pinned on a few terrible public officials who engineered the catastrophe (Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld), or to a larger number who assented and were complicit (Rice and Powell, but also John Kerry and Hillary Clinton), in truth the failures of the Iraq War also point to broader structural and social failures that apply in some ways to all of us. How can we do better as a society -- to try and ensure that something like this doesn't happen again?

>>>

Hey!  Let's all  rend our  clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and march through our towns flagellating  ourselves.  Then we'll be superior to anyone who doesn't join in our collective guilt festival!

What a buncha fucknuts.

178 Perry to make an announcement later this year about 2016 Looks like Perry may be strongly considering a run for 2016. I like him a lot, but I just hope he can turn into more of a rock-star by then because apparently that helps: does he have the money?

180 I had an orange cat named Hobbes for a while. He was big and cool, and quite the hunter. The folks down the street reported him for killing birds. That's what cats do, but she was upset. Turns out she is a vet tech. Talk about low information.

Hobbes went to a friend's farm where he could hunt to his heart's content. Happy cat was happy.

183 Eleven, Considering the damage Obama has done to our economy, Home Depot is a good job. Checked out the job stats for recent college graduates? Being a barista is a good job now. Also, it's unfair to blame students for their debt situations. They want to k-12, where the government paid all sorts of advisors etc to tell them to take out debt (to support the Dem-education complex). In college the people that, you're told, are on your side, say the same thing. The deans and job placement folks encourage you to get a degree in bullshit. The details of the scam go on for pages.

I've mentioned it before but if any company is feeling the economic pinch because of higher taxes fire all of the Obama voters. Tell them because Obama raised their taxes things are so bad you must let people go. If Obama didn't raise our taxes you'd still have a job but Obama's higher taxes mean you're out of work

189 Speaking as one who took an 87% cut in pay almost four years ago, a job at Home Depot would be just fine. I can't get anyone to hire me because I'm "overqualified" and they figure I will just quit and move on. They have plenty of young idiots to fill the retail slots already, so why take a chance on someone who actually knows a thing or two?

192 When I was in high school in the late '80s, I could open the comics page and enjoy new Calvin and Hobbes, The Far Side, and Bloom County strips.  It was a golden age.  Hell, Garfield was even still funny back then.

Now, except for Dilbert, there's nothing that compares.  I enjoy Get Fuzzy, Sherman's Lagoon, and Pearls Before Swine, but they don't have the depth of funniness those '80s greats did.

193 The administration has proved remarkably vulnerable to manipulation by enemy intelligence. A hacker named “Guccifer” recently broke into the email accounts of Sidney Blumenthal, who was an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. In his emails Blumental accidentally recorded himself spoon-feeding disinformation by the Libyan officials to Hillary Clinton. He wrote to Clinton that “a senior security officer told [interim Libyan President Mohammed Yussef] el Magariaf that the attacks on that day were inspired by what many devout Libyans viewed as a sacrilegious internet video on the prophet Mohammed originating in America.”

If this e-mail is for real, then it's pretty obvious where the "sacrilegious video" BS came from. It also pretty clear that the White House just doesn't believe the CIA.

206 Ten, Bingo. Anyone capable of rubbing 2 brain cells together is now unqualified for most work. Critical thinking is the enemy of the liberal machine. The failure to educate the public falls squarely upon the GOP. Instead of fighting back, the GOP elite are jealous of the unfettered power accumulated by the Dems. It's why someone like Rand is mandatory for 2016. He's willing to educate and promote liberty, unlike McFuckStick or Mittard.

I've been reading a collection of scifi short stories by James Alan Gardner entitled Gravity Wells lately which I quite like because of the creativity of the author both as regards plot and style but, caveat lector, he is a lefty.  The title story concerns vignettes about time travel back to the Kent State shootings with the premise that the shootings were necessary to finally cause massive disgust with the Vietnam War and thus usher in the era of peace and prosperity that we currently enjoy.

227 EC, I think the 'shortest' time happened to an F-105D Thunderchief when it was restored at Norton AFB.

The Thud is a very tall and huge aircraft.  13ft to reach the cockpit.  The probe in-flight refueling slipway was in front of the windscreen.  So the nose art in question was not visible from the ground.

This Thud was a genuine Vietnam vet and had flown combat with this noseart.  It was also nose art that was removed in theater.

So with all that lead up, here is the nose art.  A nude woman squatting over the slipway.  Named Cherry Girl.  So the only people who could see the art would be tower controllers and the guys in the back of a KC-135 refueling the plane.

So Norton AFB restores the Thud with that art.  IIRC in a day after it was painted that orders came down to immediately remove the offending nose art.

Probably NSFW, here is an F-105D model with Cherry Girl nose art.

230 Conservatives also need to start recognizing how liberals operate. A liberal is a liberal first before anything else. Every liberal I know in any position if power hires exclusively liberals, promotes exclusively liberals, works to make sure non-believers are fired, etc. Conservative business owners need to recognize the nature of partisan warfare. The liberals need to lose their jobs, replaces with conservatives. Business, whenever possible, needs to be only with conservatives. Economic warfare is brutal, but that's the point our society has gotten to because of their ideology.
