Spending time among the flora and fauna . . .
— Pixy Misa

. . . can do wonders for the soul. And if you have a camera to carry with you, it can be a rewarding pursuit -- though, not necessarily in the pecuniary sense. That's not to say you can't make a buck or two in nature photography; you most certainly can. But, if that's the reason you decide to take it up as a pursuit, well, you're kind of a dumbass. Odds are, you're going to be a few thousand bucks lighter in the pocket before you ever see the first proverbial thin dime in recompense for your efforts.

No, you go into nature photography (and any other kind for that matter) simply because enjoy it and want to become good at it. That's pretty much how it happened to me, anyway. I was bitten by the bug while attempting, with some degree of frustration, to take photos of drag racers launching off the starting line with a borrowed Canon point-and-shoot. It only took a couple of trips to the drag strip to convince me that what I needed was a better camera. And from there, well, it's been one glorious expense after another.

In a Flash
It wasn't long before I went out and bought my first DSLR -- the Pentax K-x. It's a great little camera, particularly for an entry-level model. What it lacks in professional-type controls, ergonomics and options it more than makes up for in performance. It was just enough to fuel an addiction that mercilessly dogs me some four years later.

That first successful capture in the noisy, smoke-laden atmosphere of the Sikeston Drag Strip was just the beginning of a life of frustration and soul-crushing poverty as I found myself sinking every cent of my (obscenely meager) discretionary income into camera bodies and lenses. Thank God, as I surely would have gone insane but for its emergence into my life.

Nowadays, I engage in all manner of photography. But, when I want to just shut out the world and be away from the daily indignities that plague the heart and soul, I grab my Pentax K-5 (usually with a 50mm f/1.7 lens attached) and commence to hoofin' it. It's a diversion I took up in earnest a couple of years ago during an especially trying time, when spare moments were exceedingly rare and as treasured as a Death Valley oasis.

So, since I have this opportunity to engage in some self-promotion on a highly trafficked web site as a third-string, non-controversial content provider, I'm going to give it to you good and hard. Here are a few of the images I've managed to produce in my hapless pursuit of serenity. Click on 'em to see 'em real good.

So, there you have it: another little diversion I use to help maintain my sanity. I figure as long as we conservatives are wandering about in the wilderness, we might as well make the most of it and take a camera along.

26 I purchased a wonderful little camera a few years ago (Panasonic FZ and, although I kept saying I would one day take a class to learn how to use the manual controls, the automatic settings were so nice that I never did. Last week, I forgot and left my driver's side door unlocked and it was stolen from my truck. The joke's on them, however, as by now they have surely discovered that it uses a proprietary battery/charger system.... and I have the charger. Pricks. Posted by: alexthechick Team Ice Cream at October 23, 2013 09:28 PM (Gk3SS) We had a couple of our painters doing work in the local catholic hospital. They're fighting with a troublesome machine. One painter lets out a "GD". Angry phone call to my dad later, those painters are banned from the hospital. Another guy had a nervous habit of jingling change in his pocket. He's on the elevator when a couple nuns step on. He starts jingling. They call the cops on "the pervert who's playing with himself in front of the nuns." Fun times. Fun times.

56 Bee-youtiful photos. I have been interested in HDR photography but haven't had a good enough camera, probably won't for a while. I did manage some interesting stuff with merged photos - not the grossly over-saturated or what-have-you stuff you sometimes see, but bringing out colors and sharpness you hadn't expected. You really have to watch what CCD your camera is made with for things like that. Didn't know at the time.

Makes me long for my old Nikon F2-a system, replete with shoulder busting bag of prime lenses.

I need to invest in a Nikon DSLR.  Sometimes, being a Luddite ain't all it's cracked up to be.

Beautiful.......nay, STUNNINGLY beautiful photos there, sir.  My highest compliments.

I had a little spare cash, and headed into the Central Valley to poke around. I found a great one for $2,500, but I thought that was too much, and anyway I wanted the smaller body with the small block 289.

Yes, I am an asshole...and stupid to boot.

142 I started doing photography semi-professionaly (meaning I get paid, but not enough to support a family without a 9-5er paying the bills).  The more I do it, the more I cant wait to quit the 9-5er.

Here's one from a shoot I did yesterday.

There are a few occasions when I *so* wished I had a camera. One occurred in January 2012. I was at the bus stop at 7:10 AM, about 20 minutes before dawn. The sky was very unusual: lots of extremely high clouds (I believe they're called cirrostratus); and on that day, they formed a solid layer of cloud, not just a few broken clouds here and there. As I looked up, I saw that there was a line on the clouds running north and south: to the west of the line, it was shady, to the east it was light. And the line was moving toward the west. Then it hit me: God almighty, that's the Earth's shadow!

I'd never seen anything like it before, and probably I'll never see it again. And no camera!

148 I got a C in a photography class I took in college. I'd see something, think "now that would make a nice photograph" and then I'd find - something was off. Not centered or angled right or something. Too much sky or too much sidewalk or boring instead of dramatic. I thought the class was going to be an easy A. It was then I realized there was more to photography than I had thought.

149 Nice pictures. I took photography in high school - black & white where we developed the pix ourselves. Didn't keep it up, but spent years in the dark room developing electron micrographs. Was happy when we started moving to digital cameras.

150 For those of you who believe you're simply incapable of taking good photos, it's just not true. It just takes a good bit of practice and a willingness to fail 99% of the time until you finally get it right. The first and most important thing I learned that helped my photography was the fact that what you leave out of the photograph is most often as important as what you capture in it.

The great thing about digital photography is that you don't have to spend a fortune taking bad photos on film before you get any good at it. Also, you'd be amazed at how many seemingly bad photos actually turn out to be pretty good when you go back and look at them later and suddenly discover that a little bit of judicious cropping makes all the difference in the world.

152 I love to look at pictures.  But you have to have an eye, something inate, you have it, I don't so it makes me appreciate the pictures even more. I particularly like the horse picture.  You captured the essence of the horse and the praying mantis is amazing.  I'd take the bird shot and look at it and have missed the bird and have the background sans bird.

Your horse pictures remind me so much of Richard Stone Reeves' work.  Yes, he was a painter but his painting and your horse picture have the same essence.
