Spite House Open Thread

Just a brief one tonight.

Now the Park Service, which is going to find itself rather nicely purged at some point, is spending time and manpower removing the handles from drinking fountains on public lands. Caveat: NC Mountain Girl says drinking water handles are routinely taken off as winter approaches, so this might not be a Shutdown Theater production at all.

If the Shutdown has any good benefit, it's of clarifying the situation: Not only does it clarify that the Government has its own interest -- not a public interest, mind you, but its own selfish corporate interest distinct from that of the citizenry -- but it's also now brazen in asserting that interest, at the expense of citizens.

Wolf Blitzer wants to know if maybe a year delay in ObamaCare isn't such a bad idea.

And while Obama's approval rate may be falling (per AP, to a new low), the GOP's has fallen to a 20 year low.

Now that everyone is seeing the horror stories of the roll out and the sticker shock and broken promises that would set up the "repeal" crowd better than ever to win the House and Senate. Oddly enough, people weren't paying much attention to their signs and police tape and such, either. And what, it's so hard to makeshift a pump handle and get the water anyway? Fuck 'em.

I think that the blame he is getting and his dropping poll numbers have completely surprised him.  He really thought that by being a dick about the national parks people would reject Republicans and rally to him to protect them from the scary Tea Party people.

87 They drinking fountain story might not be correct.  In cold climates the handles on drinking fountains are removed each fall as normal maintenance.  They serve as shut off valves so the pipers don't freeze over the winter. Dates vary depening upon park utilization.    Fountains near beaches might be shut down soon after Labor Day.  Fountains on rails with fall color traffic might stay functioning until after peak color  It is possible these were pushed forward a couple of weeks because of the shutdown so a hard freeze wouldn't ruin fountains.

I turned it on and kept it aimed at the thing until my brother came home. We had to chase it outside & I needed an extra Valium that day. Oh, it was horrible to know that something was running around my house and I couldnÂ’t find it.

Speaking of those loathsome squirrels, did you know that they eat corn? Corn on the cob? Corn on the cob that is still on the stalks, not quite ripe enough to be harvested?

I didn't know that, either, until they ate our entire corn crop this last summer. Three rows of corn, and we got a whopping three itty-bitty ears out of all that.

I am going to try trapping squirrels (can't shoot 'em because my backstop would be someone's house) this winter.

 

Also, maybe, some rabbits as well. They ate our peas.

My brother got fed up with the squirrels that were raiding his bird feeder so he got a pellet gun and waited until the neighborhood cats were sitting below the bird feeder looking up wistfully at the squirrels.  The pellet didn't kill the squirrel, just stunned him and knocked him down to where the cats turned him into a tasty meal.  After three or four times, there have been no squirrels in the bird feeder for a while.

They changed the highway, no signs, took an extra hour to find cemetery. They had the road gated closed, super wierd and new. Mom was just getting her knee replaced, couldn't walk, so I drove around. Got stuck in mud. Asked the only guy camping for a service station and he was the park snitch. He called the ranger who came n gave me a ticket. The snitch must have called all his friends. 15-20 people showed up to watch me get winched. My Mom asked them why they didn't get any popcorn. I don't think they should deny access to cemeteries.

392 President Obama has ordered officials to resume paying death benefits to the families of fallen soldiers and was "very disturbed" they had been halted due to the government shutdown, said White House spokesman Jay Carney.

Carney said Obama had ordered the Office of Management and Budget to work with Spite House lawyers to find a way to restart the benefits and expects a fix Wednesday.

"He was not pleased to learn of this problem," Carney said, adding it was "unthinkable" that those who had lost family members would go without benefits.

The Spite House said that Congress was warned that death benefits would be halted in a government shutdown and said the "Pay Our Military Act" passed late last month, which authorized paying the salary of service members, did not "explicitly" address the issue.

Republicans have said the administration should have interpreted the law to allow the benefits.

394 KENOSHA, Wis. —WISN 12 News investigates an operation raising questions about the use of government resources and the state policy that meant a death sentence for a fawn.

"It was like a SWAT team," shelter employee Ray Schulze said.

Two weeks ago, Schulze was working in the barn at the Society of St. Francis on the Kenosha-Illinois border when a swarm of squad cars arrived and officers unloaded with a search warrant.

"(There were) nine DNR agents and four deputy sheriffs, and they were all armed to the teeth," Schulze said.

The focus of their search was a baby fawn brought there by an Illinois family worried she had been abandoned by her mother.

The warden drafted an affidavit for the search warrant, complete with aerial photos in which he described getting himself into a position where he was able to see the fawn going in and out of the barn.

It was to go to a wildlife reserve in Illinois that allows the rehabilitation of deer. Schulze said agents corralled workers near the picnic area and then set out in search of the fawn.

"I was thinking in my mind they were going to take the deer and take it to a wildlife shelter, and here they come carrying the baby deer over their shoulder. She was in a body bag," Schulze said. "I said, 'Why did you do that?' He said, 'That's our policy,' and I said, 'That's one hell of a policy.'"
