Fresh, clean, new, now with 50% more lilac smell.

I don't know who torched the oil wells in Syria, but that's usually a sign of desperation. Somebody is on the ropes...

Apple denied trademark for iPad Mini. Might be a kindness...this is a product searching for a market. Too big to be conveniently pocketable, like a phone, but with all the well known usability issues of normal sized tablets magnified by its diminutive stature. Why would anyone buy one, unless... ah... ummm... because its Apple and will impress my friends?

It's all politics all of the time. I wonder what MLK would think about all of this? He was a man that had flaws as we all do, but I really can't believe that he would recognize this "new" theology as legitimate.

The iPod was very useful (I wasnÂ’t willing to get an iPhone until the monthly service charges went way down; I bought a used Blackberry and used it without a data connection just to be able to sync contacts to my computer and use bluetooth in my car) but too small for some things like SSH or blogging via web browser. I bought the iPad 2 when my 2001 laptop finally started not being fast enough and I realized that for what I did on it, an iPad would be much easier to carry around. I bring a standard wireless keyboard with me while traveling and when I need to write a lot (you know, movie reviews, thought not on the epic scale as others who shall not be named) set the iPad on a stand. And when the boss needs me to fix a server remotely, I can ssh in from just about anywhere. WouldnÂ’t know what to do with an iPad Mini now, but having once wanted something of that size, I can see the use for it. BTW, what does the 'i' in iPad, iPod, iPhone, etc stand for? Not sure the Â“iÂ” really stands for anything any more. When it first was used on the iMac, it stood for Internet.

74 The iPad Mini is actually pretty cool -- it is more impressive/useful in person than you'd think from just reading a description of it. Was sorely tempted to buy one at Christmastime... will probably pick one up eventually. Lighter & easier to handle than a full-size iPad, and doesn't sacrifice much in terms of usability.

78 The main market for the iPad Mini is education. It costs 2/3 of an iPad. That means a school can buy 3 for the price of 2 iPads. With tight budgets and the desire to get more devices into the hands of students, it has a place. The Chromebook gives it some competition, but the Mini has an edge in apps. Also, the Mini doesn't require constant connectivity to make it effective. The Chromebook is more or less a device designed to connect to the internet to take advantage of Google's services. It can do more but is best used online.

Yeah, that was a pretty tragic event at the Louisville - Duke game.

Coach Pitino was describing after the game. His ankle was broken and the bone was sticking about 6 inches out of the skin ; Compound fracture.

It was excruciating to watch, and my kids brought it up later on their phones. A real stomach turner, poor kid.

I look for the Russians and the Chinese to come in later and sort it all out, and come to control the oil fields themselves, since we are now so loathe to get into any "foreign entanglements".

And then there is the latest bit of news: Australia and China will now have direct interchange of currency in trading, and no longer use US dollars in the exchanges. The days of the US being the world's reserve currency are now numbered.

My sister did better in certain academic areas than me, but people still held the stereotype. We went to separate post-secondary institutions and she excelled. Having just had my three kids graduate (a singleton 16 months older than his twin sister), if they go the private college route, be prepared to need a lot more than $200K. If we had had to do it over, all of our kids would have gone to one of the fine state system schools in VA. Tech is less smug than UVA and better for engineering. I'm biased because I went there. Do not know about Tulane. Tech is probably cheapest of the bunch, but not as good for liberal arts.

213 I personally won't buy anything Apple due to a longstanding grudge but it would be madness on Apple's part to completely ignore the growth in the 7"-ish category and leave it all to Google. Give up ownership of a category to somebody else and it becomes a foot in the door for the other categories.

The smaller form factor works better for a lot of tasks and is more portable. A gaming tablet with a controller dock (a U-shaped frame that adds buttons and analog directional inputs) using that form factor would still be small enough to be reasonably portable and off a much bigger screen and range of software than the dedicated portable game systems from Sony and Nintendo.

A story that got oft reported this week was that Microsoft has relaxed the minimum display requirements for Win8 and RT to allow for smaller devices. You lose some features like the snap view of multiple apps, though that will probably come back as they extend the feature to allow for more configurations in a pending update. By the time anyone is ready to ship a 7" Win tablet the update will likely be the shipping standard, so scarcely anyone will ever know about the feature restriction for smaller screens.

If Microsoft wanted to have a Xbox portable that would also be the SmartGlass reference platform, a 7" Win RT table with controller dock would be a good way to go. Something like a Tegra 4 could possibly even muster emulation of the original Xbox and have access to that library in addition to newer stuff developed for the WinRT platform. Not a huge selling point but something to distinguish the platform. Given a 720p or better screen, they could also enable the Xbox 360 to act as a game server to allow use of that library, similar to what Nintendo does with the minimal processing in the Wii U controller, which is a thin client connecting to a terminal server.
