Stanley Cup Playoffs thread (tmi3rd)
— Open Blogger

Hi there, Morons and Moronettes. I'm tmi3rd, and we're going to do things a little differently with this year's group of hockey threads.

We're going to keep them on the weekends. This will keep from clogging up what's been a pretty busy news period.

Today's games are (3) WAS vs (6) NYR at 4:30 EDT on CNBC, (4) BOS vs (5) TOR at 7:30 EDT on NBC Sports, and (7) DET vs (2) ANA at 10:30 EDT on NBC Sports.

More below the fold... What's Happened Up To Now

So far, we've had some very interesting things happen.

In the East, (1) Pittsburgh got all it could handle from ( New York Islanders. Pittsburgh seemed very unsteady after four games, with the series tied at two, before the decision was made to bench goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury for Tomas Vokoun. Vokoun responded with a shutout and with a 4-3 overtime win, and some very real questions have to be asked in Pittsburgh about who their netminder's going to be going forward. That said, major kudos to Evgeni Malkin for being the go-to guy in Game 6, and to Sidney Crosby (I know, I know) for coming back as quickly as he has from a badly broken jaw to play in the playoffs.

The Isles, on the other hand, friggin' ROCKED despite some shaky goaltending from Evgeni Nabokov. The Isles have been AWFUL for years, and league MVP candidate John Tavares finally got some time in the spotlight, where he delivered. The Isles will be leaving Nassau Coliseum on Long Island for the comparatively nicer confines of the Barclay Center in Brooklyn in the near future, and their future looks bright indeed (although I'm afraid they're going to blow up their uniforms in the process).

(2) Montreal ran into a (7) Ottawa team that frankly just ate their lunch. A 4-1 series does tell the story... Montreal had a wonderful turnaround, going from 15th in the conference to 2nd, but were badly undersized against a more physical Ottawa team. Les Canadiens got the crap kicked out of them throughout the series, punctuated by this Game 3 line brawl:

Ottawa was backstopped by Team USA Olympic hopeful Craig Anderson, and they'll have a very interesting second-round matchup with Pittsburgh.

In the West...

(3) Vancouver had an epic meltdown against (6) San Jose. The Sedin twins never got going, Ryan Kesler never got going, and the usually-stout Vancouver D corps didn't do a particularly impressive job keeping track of Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau. They also apparently forgot that Joe Pavelski (USA! USA! USA!) was playing, and he had a ridiculous 4 G and 4 A against Vancouver. Antti Niemi looks to be in the same form he was for Chicago in their championship run, but I'm not going to go much further than that in terms of predictions.

The goaltending soap opera in Vancouver will be solved one way or another this summer. Cory Schneider (again, a top USA Olympic prospect) was supposed to be the answer in Vancouver, and Roberto Luongo should have been shipped out at the trade deadline. Instead, Luongo outplayed Schneider in the playoffs, and the questions persist in Vancouver.

(4) St. Louis seemed to be in control of the series against the defending Stanley Cup champion (5) Los Angeles Kings after two games, but then lost four straight to flame out for the second straight year against the Kings. This was a closer series than the 4-2 final would indicate, as all six games were one-goal decisions, but there are still some questions to be answered in St. Louis going forward.

As for this evening, I'm not even going to pretend I have any idea how this is going to turn out. The Caps and Drew M.'s Rangers have absolutely clobbered one another the whole way. Boston will head to Toronto to try to close them out, which seems plausible, but Toronto looked beaten after game 4. Finally, Detroit and Anaheim will play their deciding seventh game tonight.

Tonight's conversation piece...

So this is a CT scan of Toronto's Mark Fraser after taking a puck to the forehead:

CT scan.jpg

The hole you see in his forehead appears to be his frontal sinus (not everyone has them, but those that do...), and the same thing happened to a buddy of mine who was an Edmonton draft pick by the name of Darryl LaFrance when he was with my New Orleans Brass back in the ECHL.

Now, I'm coming at this from the perspective of someone who made a living with his face and also as someone who's working on hopefully being a head and neck surgeon, but between this and Bryan Berard's lacerated eyeball, I'm pretty much sold on the notion of mandatory face protection being implemented in professional hockey.

I was in the fightingest Division III league there was when I played college hockey, and we just tore our helmets off along with our gloves when we fought. My big thing is, for the jaw injuries and facial injuries that require a lot of body and fender work, they can be avoided with face protection to a large degree. It won't do a damn thing about concussions, but having had my cage caved in by pucks, sticks, and the boards, I think it's time.

What say you?

Also, Team USA is rocking out in the IIHF World Championships... with this morning's 3-0 shutout of Germany, they need only to win one more game to win their pool.

11 And I couldn't believe the Leafs in game 5 trying to spend the entire 3rd period in their own end just icing the puck. What kind of stupid is that? And it's not like the players were doing it on their own; they were obviously doing what the coach told them to do.

We'll see about tonight. I hope Reimer's on again.

26 Second line is a tradition in brass band parades in New Orleans, Louisiana. The "main line" or "first line" is the main section of the parade, or the members of the actual club with the parading permit as well as the brass band. Those who follow the band just to enjoy the music are called the "second line." The second line's style of traditional dance, in which participants walk and sometimes twirl a parasol or handkerchief in the air, is called "second lining." It has been called "the quintessential New Orleans art form — a jazz funeral without a body."[1] Another significant difference from so called "jazz funerals" is second line parades usually lack the slow hymns and dirges played at funerals (although this is not a hard rule; some organizations may have the band play something solemn towards the start of the parade in memory of members deceased since their last parade).

Posted by: Mr. Pink at May 12, 2013 01:15 PM (o5R8U)

38 Hockey is great because it is a man's sport (I'm a woman, so this is just my perspective). In the NBA, if somebody fouls somebody, there is much whining, denial, and gnashing of teeth. In soccer, the little bitches all fake a fall and then roll around like somebody just castrated them in public. Pussies, all of them.

In hockey, a guy gets caught slashing, or tripping, or some other egregious act of felonious intent, and he is damned proud to have done so, and will strut off to the penalty box without the slightest whimper.

I say, let's have line changes on the fly in basketball, and anyone caught faking a trip or fall in soccer should have to sit out the next 10 seasons.

Or, just watch hockey and be quite satisfied.

Posted by: tcn at May 12, 2013 01:15 PM (VLG62)

39 I remember hockey in the late 60's and early 70's. Wearing helmets was rare. Gump Worsley of the Minnesota North Stars didn't even wear a mask in goal. Tough hombres. All of the old North Stars had jobs in the off season too. They didn't make enough playing hockey so they had to. I remember serving legal process on Bill Goldsworthy, who was in the insurance business in the off season.

Posted by: Truck Monkey at May 12, 2013 01:15 PM (jucos)

40 According to every sportscaster within 150 miles of Chicago, any story about any other NHL team's performance during the playoffs is superfluous, irrelevant and/or stupid. God, you see, has apparently decided to apologize to Chicago for casting it as Babylon as part of the coming Judgement Day/SMOD/Zombie Apocalypse, by way of guaranteeing the Hawks a second championship. So sayeth them.

Posted by: tcn at May 12, 2013 05:15 PM (VLG62) In law school I had this jackass professor (BIRM) who came in one day and started the class with a 5 minute tirade against hockey. All the usual crap. Just a bunch of neanderthals. Anybody with an ounce of culture wouldn't watch it. Blah blah blah. He ends with "And that's that. I don't want or need a rebuttal." Took two steps away from the podium and then smiles and says "well, I guess in the interest of fairness I should allow someone to respond." And then just stands there with a smirk on his face because he assumes no one will risk pissing him off. Au contrair. I look around. No one's doing anything but staring down. Hand goes up. "Mr. Cochran?" "I like hockey. And it ain't a tea party. They're men. They hit each other. They fight. It's part of the game. If you don't like it, that's fine, DON'T WATCH. No one's forcing you to."

Finally watched ATLAS SHRUGGED Pt 2 last night.
It was poorly edited, but I liked it a lot. It delivered the message perfectly.

I was saving Atlas Shrugged part 2 for post-election entertainment. After Obama won, I did not want to see it because it was no longer a movie of what-could've-been, but of what-is-to-be.

62 tmi3rd, Friend from High School, prolific scorer, went on to D-1 hockey. Was checked from behind and broke most of the bones in his face. Never played competitively again. And that was with facial protection. So while I fully favor protection, know that some players will view it as an excuse to be even more stupid on the premise that a thin sheet of plastic will work as well as an automobile airbag. It won't.

63 Hockey isn't for pussies. I like that there is not as much fighting as there used to be and also they have the delay of game penalty for when a player ties up the puck at the boards or flips it over the glass. Chicago fan....THE BEST

Hossa's second period goal, which was a big one, as it pushed the Hawks' lead to three, may have induced labour in one fan. Midway through the middle frame, Donna Lebano, eight months pregnant, started having contractions.

But the diehard Hawks fan wasn't going to miss an elimination game just to give birth to some baby.

"No way was I leaving," Lebano said in a statement. "We are a Hawks family. I had to see the end of the game."

And really, she gave birth to one of these things a year and a half ago. The Hawks haven't been to the second round since 2010. So, you know, priorities

86 I lurk-  Captancy is frequently done wrong in many sports. Talent does not equal leadership.

It's a tight thing tho, since most teams won't take leadership from talent below a certain level.

89 No, talent doesn't always equal leadership. But to be a leader, you have to perform on the ice/field/etc. Who else would lead the Caps? I've been a team leader before. Teammates respect two things: Hustle and Results.

Posted by: BCochran1981 - Credible Hulk at May 12, 2013 02:06 PM (GEICT)

90 Pittsburgh's D didn't help the goalies much, IMO. Frankly they will have there hands full with Ottawa. That series will go the distance. I hope Fleury gets his head together because when he is on, he looks like a future HoF'er. When he is off, he can't stop a beach ball. They need Fleury to win the Cup. I heard a comparison of him to Grant Fuhr (Gretzky I think). He kind of reminds me of Tommy Barrasso (inconsistant as hell).  Anyway, GO PENS!!!!

Posted by: typo dynamofo at May 12, 2013 06:07 PM (WVMUQ) That's pretty much the complete opposite of every team I've been on. Seniority matters. Earning your place on the team for multiple years has weight. Hustle is something you cannot teach to players. It should, and does, weigh very heavily. Especially to teammates. Players that are talented AND work hard are rarely bad teammates. Lots of talented guys don't work. THEY'RE the crappy teammates.

He was in Edmonton with Gretzky for 84, 85, 87 and 88 Stanley Cups (he was there for the 1990 Cup but didn't play as much). When he was on, he was on, but he could look pretty ordinary too. He was quite small for an NHL goalie back then. Now, I don't think he'd make it to the NHL.

160 IRS Probe Expands To Groups Criticizing The Government, Teaching About Constitution… At various points over the past two years, Internal Revenue Service officials targeted nonprofit groups that criticized the government and sought to educate Americans about the U.S. Constitution, according to documents in an audit conducted by the agency’s inspector general. The documents, obtained by The Washington Post from a congressional aide with knowledge of the findings, show that on June 29, 2011, IRS staffers held a briefing with senior agency official Lois G. Lerner in which they described giving special attention to instances where “statements in the case file criticize how the country is being run.” Lerner, who oversees tax-exempt groups for the agency, raised objections and the agency revised its criteria a week later. But six months later, the IRS applied a new political test to groups that applied for tax-exempt status as “social welfare” groups, the document says. On Jan. 15, 2012 the agency decided to target “political action type organizations involved in limiting/expanding Government, educating on the Constitution and Bill of Rights, social economic reform movement.,” according to the appendix in the IG report, which was requested by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee and has yet to be released. The new revelations are likely to intensify criticism of the IRS, which has been under fire since agency officials acknowledged they had deliberately targeted groups with “tea party” or “patriot” in their name for heightened scrutiny. Hubris and arrogance

When goalies started wearing masks, ( which was consider wussy by many) One goalie, I think it was Gerry Cheevers of the bruins would mark stitches on his mask indication what those shots would have done to his face.

Was it Cheevers ?

Just got back from my middle stepson's college graduation (get a job!).  Woot!  Three down, one to go.  My youngest stepson, the Marine, went to the ceremony dressed in his "working" uniform with the blue pants and the khaki shirt.  All these hawt college girls started coming up to him, shaking his hand, telling him how much they appreciated his service, telling him how handsome he looked, and if they could take pictures with him.  LOL!!!  The uniform is definitely a chick magnet.

195 Whowas the last bare faced goalie? Was it Gump Worsly (sp) ? Posted by: seamrog at May 12, 2013 07:38 PM (OgV3/) It was Andy Brown of the Penguins in the 1973-1974 season. After that season he went to the WHA and continued to play without a mask until he retired in 1977. Gump Worsley started the 73-74 season without a mask but started wearing one partway through. The last NHL player (non-goalie, of course) to play without a helmet was Craig MacTavish, who is best known for playing with the Edmonton Oilers and NY Rangers (he is now the Oilers' GM). When the NHL instituted a helmet rule those who weren't wearing them were grandfathered in. Yes, I'm a bastion of hockey information.

273 TR JR is very conservative. Just not as cynical (realistic?) as me. Respects authority to a fault. A professor couldn't be fu of shit. No way.

281 Golfman- That is one damned hard school to get into. You already know that. Hard to teach kids to respect their profs, and still instill some sense of discernment.

282 Vokoun. Go with the guy who is hot. They won't win the Stanley Cup without Fleury so I hope he gets his head out of his ass.

283 Golfman in NC,

They show one aerial view of the shot and it looked like it was over water the whole time.  In my view he should have had to re-tee, but the guy playing with him agreed it crossed the hazard up farther so he would at least have a chance to get to the green  It was still a really tough shot and he almost pulled it off, but I don't think it was a accurate drop. Even Johnny miller said he didn't it was a correct drop.

286 I'd like to put up a fight on behalf of the Flyers but my heart isn't it, especially since they're owned by Comcast, so I'll concede that they suck. But boy, I loved them years ago and my ex had seats on the ice - good times.

287 When I got to my son's lacrosse game today he was tending goal without his pads. He's a big kid so I guess the coach didn't catch it. He says the pads slow him down. My husband was like, oh.

289 US Air Force. I never really did college. I'm a network admin now but I did the cert route for it. Its never ending though and I'm lazy. Thankfully I have a nice juicy security clearance (thank you Air Force) which has gotten me some decent jobs since I got out.

292 I like hockey, but are there any baseball writers around these parts?

...can I volunteer?

Since I've hijacked this well-written and excellent thread, I'd like to say that the NHL's Settling Things on the Ice is AWESOME!  That's Quality Libertarianism!

...as far as Detroit goes, it is Beirut North America.  But the Red Wings are excellence personified.

However... IS THIS NOT AMERICA?!?  Can we get some baseball writers?

If there are, I am ill-informed and I apologize.  If there aren't?

...May God Save Your Souls.

296 Hockey is a man's sport for sure.  Can you imagine a basketball player clotheslining a player from the other team when he ran out from under the net?  That's what the Isles' Billy smith used to do.  Whenever a player from the other team would come around from behind his net, Smith would clothesline him with his stick which, by the way, had the back edge of the handle sharpened for just that purpose.

298 Thank you, "I lurk", I haven't read Mr. Boswell, but I've heard of him.  Perhaps I avoid WaPo to a fault... lol.

As far as "chats" go, I usually only attend Fantasy Baseball chats.  I get twelve RSS feeds from various areas for my baseball info, but WaPo isn't one of them.

Thank you for the info, sir.

But Bob Rohlfing who was walking with the group and stood behind the shot said he didn't have a problem with it.  I agree about what the overhead shot showed, but it was not directly overhead.  It was from the side, so it's really hard to tell.  Miller didn't exactly say that the drop was wrong.  He just said, he wouldn't be comfortable with it, but he was watching it from a tower on a TV monitor.  I trust the guys on the ground who atually saw where it went.

300 Thank you for the info, sir. Posted by: Slapweasel at May 12, 2013 09:05 PM (7gwGw) I'm a ma'am, actually (not that my name would indicate that!). Boswell gives very detailed answers on his chat. He knows his baseball and loves the Nationals.

Posted by: I lurk, therefore I am at May 12, 2013 05:07 PM (QR2k5)

301 I'm pretty sure that the NHL doesn't follow the brackets, that the highest seeded team will play the lowest seeded team. So the Blackhawks will be playing the Sharks regardless of the outcome of tonight's game 7 between the Red Wings and Ducks. Thus sets up the potential for the first ever postseason matchup of Kings vs Ducks. So I'll be rooting for the Ducks tonight, then against them (hopefully) next week. P.S. Virginia won the College Cup (NCAA title) for mens soccer in 2009, beating Akron in PKs.

302 Re:  (I lurk):

Well, then...

God Bless you, ma'am!

The Washington Nationals are one of my favorite teams this year.  As a baseball fan whose bucket-list includes attending a game at every stadium, I love to see home-grown talent come to fruition.

The GM deserves a TON of credit for his talent assessment and the minor league managers deserve big credit for developing All-Stars.

I'd love to see a baseball thread on this site, rather than The Gaming thread, even though I'm an XBox owner/player.

303 Oops! My bad. I'm so rooting for a Kings vs Ducks matchup in the second round, so much so that I forgot the Red Wings are a lower seed than the Sharks. So if the Ducks lose, then the Kings will play the Sharks.

304 Been displaying my slow and poor touchscreen typing skills on the other thread. Been playing golf for 45 years. Called many penalties on myself that no onerous saw. Just don't think Tiger is that kinda guy. Plus his fellow competitor didn't want to get called out by Tiger like he did Sergio yesterday. Ain't no Tiger fan. If you'll cheat on your wife you'll cheat on the golf course.

I hate the idea of re-seeding.  If a team pulls off an upset, they deserve to get to replace that team in their bracket.  Re-seeding rewards the higher ranked teams who advance while penalizing a team for pulling off an upset.

Posted by: MattSkosh at May 12, 2013 09:12 PM NHL does re-seeding after Round 1. So if the 7-Seed Red Wings win, they will play the 1-Seed Blackhawks. Sharks are the 6-Seed and would play the 5-Seed Kings. But if the 2-Seed Ducks win, then the lowest Seed is San Jose and they would meet the Hawks.
