Study: White People Are Pretty Dumb
— Ace

Via Instapundit, a study about White People being pretty silly about race.

The study goes like this: Two people are partnered up. One can see the picture of a subject person; the other person must find the matching picture from a bunch of pictures only he can see. The person trying to make the match can only ask Yes/No questions of the person who can see the picture which they're trying to match. So the one question asks about gender, hair color, eye color, and etc., trying to figure out which picture his partner is looking at.

In the study, White People refused to ask a very basic question -- "Is this person black?" -- 43% of the time. When they were partnered with a black person, they refused to ask it 79% of the time.

There's a bad side and a good side to this. The bad side is obvious: Many white people are so scared of being seen as racist that they're not willing to talk about simple facts -- and, ironically, they end up being seen as racist as a result. Many whites' sensitivity to racism may have gone so far past the point of diminishing returns that it actively harms their relations with blacks. They place so much importance on demonstrating that black people don't make them nervous that black people make them nervous.

The good side is, of course, that overt racism has been well and truly stigmatized.

And yet it's been stigmatized to the point of absurdity and, actually, stigmatized to the point of racial condescension. When the stigma against racism turns into a stigma against merely acknowledging someone's race -- as if blackness itself were some kind of taboo condition which mustn't be mentioned in polite company -- an attempt to "appear sensitive" becomes its own sort of race consciousness.

32 There was a kids board game I used to play with my children when they were little. They loved it. Each person had a set of small cards they could insert in plastic holders that flipped up and down. You had to guess which single character your opponent had by asking questions, male - female, skin colour, big - small nose, hair colour etc. You flipped possible characters down by elimination.  I wonder if you can still purchase this racist, genderist game? How would you know if the female looking character was not trans for example?

Now, I'm not going to talk about the list except to say every one of the pictures had black people looking at white (or sometimes asian) people as if they were stupid and/or evil. And I thought, "What if I compiled similar photos, but of white people being horrified by the behavior of black people, and named it 'White People Hate It?'" Of course we all know the answer. I'd be denounced as an evil racisty racist. And probably a "h8r" to boot.

68 When your ideas contradict reality, people become unhappy. Racism exists, and will ALWAYS exist, in EVERY Race, because of basic genetic drives. We are wired to perpetuate our OWN Genes... This starts with us, then goes to Family, then extended Family, then those like us... Its part of the Darwinian Process (that the Left so loves to believe in)... Note, that EVERYWHERE, even in America, the vast majority of people Self Segregate. They live in Neighborhoods with those like them. When it IS a choice. Problem is that only Whites have been socially conditioned that this NORMAL Genetic drive, is EVIL.... and so we are overly self conscience and over compensate. Its the same with the Man / Woman thing. Men and Women ARE different, and we are WIRED to treat each other differently.... so when we try to counter that genetic programing, everyone becomes unhappy...

74 I recently took a trip accompanied by family and friends, including a young black man.  While waiting in the airport, he made a trip to the convenience shop to buy some Chapstick and a bottle of water.  At the counter, the clerk said to him "I don't know if you saw the price on that Chapstick - it's $5."

He got angry at the clerk.  I asked him why.  I thought it was nice of her to warn him that something you can get at Walmart for 99 cents was $5 at the airport.

He said, "She would have never told me that if I wasn't black.  Like she thinks I can't afford that because I'm black or something."

If that had been me I would have thanked her for the heads up and waited till I got off the plane, but my friend thought he had just been insulted because of his race.

On Tuesday, the company announced it is launching a global health and poverty section backed with Gates money, suggesting a future for not only the site's editorial strategy but also for its business. Upworthy has mastered the dark viral arts with a unique blend of A/B technology and lily-white earnestness. 93 To continue my thought from above- Then I got to thinking, and I realized that the list itself was racist- against blacks. This thing that had been compiled to show how stupid blacks thought whites (and sometimes asians) were was really showing something about blacks- their own insecurity. The first photo was a white guy at the MKL memorial, standing in front of it mimicking MLK's pose. In the background is a black guy with a look on his face like, "No, that's MY race's hero, you're not allowed to want to emulate him. The only thing you're allowed to do is cry at my feet begging forgiveness." And, with only a couple exceptions (mostly involving the fact that a certain portion of the black population not getting cosplay), they were all like that. They were all, "No, this thing belongs to my race, you can't have it, too." As though ONLY BLACKS don't realize that history is shared, as is culture, and that we get to think MLK was pretty cool, and whatever the others were.

142 It all depends where this study was done. I suspect that it was done in an urban area. Why do I suspect this? Because there is one unifying over-arching rule which summarizes all "new" rules concerning the public discussion of race. The only rule you need to know is this: White people are not allowed to mention or note the existence of race. Because if a white person does so -- even with the most positive or neutral intentions, he or she will be accused of racism. If the person is a conservative, they will be accused of overt racism. If the person is a liberal, they will be accused of unconscious racism, of unwittingly exercising their "white privilege." This is true in basically 99% of instances. All a white person needs to do to attract criticism as a racist is to merely acknowledge the existence of race, or say some word involving race. Most people here are conservatives and so are rightly sick of constantly being falsely accused of racism, and you might imagine that you are being unfairly singled out as a group with these accusations. But actually, there is an even worse circular firing squad on the left, where there are endless internicene accusations of racism and white privilege going on at universities and nonprofits or companies and comment-threads and other organizations or groups. Endless. Constant. Eric Holder and his Race Gestapo Krewe bait us for being "cowards" for "not discussing race enough," but there's a reason why no one ever discusses it: Because the phase "discuss race" is a euphemism for "Confess your sins, white man!" There is no discussion. Ever. The discussion has ended. Whites lost. All that remains is self-abnegation. This is why people in the study refused to ask the "obvious" question: they knew that to do so, however innocently and neutrally, would be perceived as a racist act. This Rule is well-known in most major cities; but perhaps it has not filtered out completely to all rural areas. Which is why I'm sure it must be an "urban setting" for the survey.

146 Study: White People Are Pretty Dumb

Frankly, I'd say that white people are fine.  It's the too-PC-by-half guilt-tripped whites - Barky's voting bloc - that are pretty dumb.

Now, here's an awful thing.  Prior to Barky, my thoughts didn't particularly go in any singular direction when I saw a black man or woman.  Now, when I see a black man or woman - after nearly eight years of Obama - my thought is instantly, "hmm.  An O-bot.  I wonder just how much he / she hates me."  Because Obama has made blatant black racism "cool."

And if you don't believe me, ask the nearest victim of the knockout game.

149 Here's a WaPost article on the Upworthy phenomenon http://tinyurl.com/o22xazs Good graphs. Upworthy publishes very little compared to other sites. --- Prior to Upworthy the model for success online was to use fewer people than traditional news outlets do to create and curate much more content. Upworthy is using very few people to create no content and to curate very little. "Our top curators comb through hundreds of videos and graphics a week, looking for the 5-7 that theyÂ’re confident are super-shareable," Upworthy explains. "ThatÂ’s not a typo: We pay people full-time to curate 5-7 things a week." One reason Upworthy limits the content it unleashes is that they're focused on traffic from Facebook, and Facebook limits the amount of content a publisher can profitably post. Outlets on Facebook get punished if they're posting too much content to the site. So a Facebook-focused publisher like Upworthy has far sharper diminishing marginal returns than a traditional publisher who's extremely interested in, say, repeat viewers of their homepage. That said, we're in an era when repeat viewing of the homepage is a lot less important than virality on Facebook. So it's not clear that should hold much weight. The lesson of the social Web is that in terms of traffic -- and traffic is not the only metric publishers should worry about, but it's important -- one piece of content that goes viral is worth hundreds of pieces of content that don't.

150 "A black man is President of the United States after being twice elected. Racism? Case closed."

When it comes to baseless allegations of racism, the case is NEVER going to be closed. Never. It's far too useful to the left and far too psychologically comforting for them.

My favorite? When Skip Gates was caught breaking into his house in Cambridge, MA, and didn't have ID on him to prove he lived there, or was the Harvard professor he claimed to be.

The Cambridget town cops sensibly suggested he have the campus police come vouch for his identity. While waiting for those cops to show up, Gates began to kick off verbally at the municipal officer, who retreated outside, because Gates is so noisy the cop can't hear his radio. Gates follows the guy outside and continues his loud confrontational harangue, at which point he gets arrested.

I'm sure we can all agree that a white guy would never, ever get arrested for acting that way towards a cop. White Privilege Card and all that.

But it's what happened next that was priceless.

Gates -- the black tenured Harvard professor -- calls four other friends of his to complain about how Whitey is keeping a brutha down with vicious racist bias.

Those four friends being:

-- his attorney Charles Ogletree, a tenured black professor at Harvard Law
-- the black Mayor of Cambridge
-- the black Governor of Massachusetts
-- the black President of the United States

You couldn't make this stuff up. Amazing how the "white power structure" turns out to be run by blacks, yet it's still all Whitey's fault.

And yet it's been stigmatized to the point of absurdity and, actually, stigmatized to the point of racial condescension.

I just mentioned this to some folks last night. I serve on a suburban school board and Friday night is a big game against the nearby city high school. After games, their team, encouraged by the coach, likes to stomp on the home team’s logo at center court. They were told not to try that at our school. The coach responded by saying “Many of our fans have guns, and we do it as a signal for them to leave the building. Otherwise they may not leave.”

As a result, our police chief wants to use a metal detector wand on fans that night. Our admin refuses, saying it would be a sign of disrespect since we donÂ’t do it for games against other schools.  (And they believe the coach is b.s.ing.

When I was able to regain my composure, and moved beyond the safety concerns, I argued that our stance was condescending. That if any coach from a visiting “white” school with a history of trouble said it, we would not hesitate to take precautions, and gladly explain why to angry fans. But we won’t do it in this case, to protect the feelings of those sensitive types of people. The bigotry of low expectations turns logic on its head. Turns intelligent people dumb.

I honestly think this whole can't talk about race thing is regional.  When I lived in Connecticut there was never a mention of black or Hispanic when they were describing a wanted person on the TV.  If they didn't say the guy was white, it was just inferred he was black or Hispanic.

Here in Kentucky I was shocked the first time I heard a TV news guy say the wanted person was a dark skinned black man.  At first I thought I had misheard it, but nope he repeated it later in the broadcast.  And every time I see something like that on the TV every time they have mentioned what race the perp is.

There's some truth to that, but on the other hand (at least here in Minnesota), there are very few black people outside the urban areas.

For example, here in Minneapolis where I live, black people comprise about 18% of the population.

Alexandria, MN with a population of about 11,000, a town far removed from the urban centers of the Twin Cities, Duluth, St. Cloud and Rochester?  .85% as of 2010.  That's up from only .42% in 2000.

I would say 95 percent of American born black people have some caucasian strain -- european, middle eastern or otherwise--or american indian in them. So what?  I have american indian in my heritage too.

So if the photo showed a medium complexion black person I would say, yeah, they have some negro and some white. Again, so what?

223 68 "It's part of the Darwinian process." I utterly reject the proposition that macroevolution led from goo to you. Also, as Darwinism is one of the foundational causes of evil in the 20th century (how it is directly tied to eugenics, euthanasia, the Marxist and Nazi ideologies, and of course, the holocaust), your point seems to be that wanting to preserve one's own purified gene pool (as part of Darwinian scientific fact), so is therefore OK-- or at least, "Stop blaming only white people for things that are caused by the need to preserve genes in everyone, white and black." But, I see no reason to be beholden to a disproved theory, so I recommend avoiding being an avowed racist (albeit with the excuse of "genes made me do it," which is basically what the Nazi's also said.). Darwinism is, in many ways, like global warming. It's all story-telling (no evidence of macroevolution) and "scientific consensus." Here's but one question (only one) for proponents of Darwinism to ponder: As the Neo-Theory of Darwinism clearly states that genetic mutations are the prime cause of change and adaptation (mutations do cause change-- I'm not denying this), which eventually leads to large-scale change (I am denying this), then explain how this fits with the complete lack of any example in the known scientific world of any mutation, even a single one, that actually adds new genetic information. How can something be getting more and more complex when there is zero evidence of said proposed vehicle for adding that complexity?

An acquaintance of mine from Germany had a somewhat similar experience. He had recently arrived, and was shopping in Hyde Park. It being summertime, he was looking at watermelons, and, watermelons not be all that common in Germany, he asked a fellow shopper how one can tell if a melon is ripe. I'm sure you can see what's coming: the fellow shopper was black, and she blew her stack.

In retrospect it's funny, but at the time being confronted with a shrieking harridan and not having any idea what the hell he did wrong was no fun at all.

He accidentally wanders into a run-down neighborhood. There's tinfoil in the windows, a bunch of young black men are loitering about. A black man is visiting a small town. He gets lost on a back road and sees a bunch of widely spaced houses- many (most) of them look run-down and like they have had any technology upgrades since 1950. Both of these men are afraid for their lives. Is either of them wrong to be? I submit that the black man's fear is based on prejudice (even "racism") far more than the white man's.

Sorry. Should clarify: That's a majority white neighborhood vs. a majority black neighborhood.

Which is safer for a lone male of the minority race to enter alone? Even if you control for economic status, don't you suppose you know which is safer?

Why is that, if we are to have an honest discussion about race? Why is it not  most appalling that we allow such a situation to fester?

284 The reason whites are assigned "group racial guilt" is because it is (falsely) presumed that they are all the descendants of, or at a minimum financially benefitted from, the institution of slavery in the past. But I once saw an incredibly devastating statistic which completely reverses this presumption, and if it was well-known would obliterate all existing narratives about race in this country. The statistic is this: Most American descendants of slave-owners now self-identify (and are identified by society) as BLACK. A related statistic: The vast majority of "white" Americans (over 97%) are not descended from slave-owners. Here is the explanation for both stats: Plantation owners in the southern slave states were actually a very small percentage of the overall population. Even in antebellum days, many whites in the south were poor, and could not afford to keep slaves. Amongst the comparatively few plantation owners (and other smaller-setting slave owners), it was not considered wise to have a lot of sons, because then the family holdings would be broken up. So for that reason (and other sociological reasons), wealthy southerners tended to have fewer children than non-wealthy southerners. Now here's where the story gets unpleasant. It is true that, partly as a result of the need to minimize legitimate heirs, and partly due to racist slaves-are-my-possessions attitudes, rape (or coerced sexual relations) of female black slaves by white slave-owners (or their sons) was indeed pretty commonplace. The case of Jefferson and his slave lover is well-known, but that actually was a rarity, because in that case they were in a (as far as we can tell) adult consensual relationship. Most white/black male/female relationships back then were nonconsensual. The resulting children were not only deemed "bastards" and rejected by the father, but in most cases (due to genetic phenotypes) were born darker-skinned than the biological father and were thus perceived as "black." And since the mother was a slave, her "black" child was also deemed a slave. The end result of this practice for decades (and centuries in the earlier British and French eras) was an ever-increasing percentage of the black/slave population who were in fact the illegitimate half-white offspring of the slaveowners themselves. And because (as the academics will tell us) of the "internalized racism" of the slaves, the light-skinned "mulatto" slaves were considered more attractive and desirable even by the other blacks, and so those half-white slave-owner descendants themselves tended to have a lot of offspring. Which is why, to this day, most American "blacks" look paler than African "blacks," and why (according to genetic studies) 70+% of "African Americans" are at least partly white. Considering that Jim Crow laws prevented black/white mixing from 1865 to 1965, and that there actually haven't been a significant number of interracial marriages even after 1965, the vast majority of the "white blood" in American blacks come as a result of rapes committed during the antebellum era. Which would mean, getting back to the point, that the vast majority of those 70+% blacks who are part white are themselves descended from slave-owners. Whew! Now, on the other side of the equation: I forget the exact stats, but way over 50% of American "whites" are descended from immigrants that arrived in America after slavery was abolished here, coming during the great mass migration era of the late 19th and early 20th century. Thus, over half of Americans are descended from Italians Irish Jews Scandinavians Greeks Armenians Germans Russians ...etc. etc. who emigrated to the US in the 1865-1920 era. So those people could not even conceivably be descended from slave-owners, since they weren't even in this country when slavery existed here. The other 40-whatever percent (sorry, don't know the exact number) of "white" American who do indeed have ancestors that were here in the pre-1865 era are for the most part descended from: - Northerners who lived in non-slave states where slavery was illegal anyway. - Poor southerners who could not afford slaves. - Or people in southern or marginal areas who simply did not own slaves for whatever reason (banish the misconception that all southerners owned slaves; actually fairly few did). The end result is that a pretty small percentage of "white" Americans are actually physically descended from slave-owners. Yet compare that to the nearly 70% of self-indentified "blacks" who ARE descended from slave-owners (via rape). This completely reverses the underlying assumption we have as a nation about "group guilt" over slavery. If anything, pale-skinned blacks need to pay reparations to dark-skinned blacks. Why should Tony Morelli and Melvin Finklestein and Michael O'Shaughnessy feel guilty about slavery or its history in the US when their ancestors arrived in this country long after slavery was abolished?

300  One of the reasons that I loathe the race and class warfare coming out of Washington is because I have a deep and abiding sympathy for young black men who are trying to live an honorable life. Good men who work hard, who are responsible, trying their best to live a moral life and all they are getting from the race hustlers is more vitriol and from the white political class, more fear and avoidance.

313 I forget the exact stats, but way over 50% of American "whites" are descended from immigrants that arrived in America after slavery was abolished here, coming during the great mass migration era of the late 19th and early 20th century. The strains of my family are primarily European immigrants that came in no later than the 1850s. It's unlikely that any of them breezed into the country and started up cotton plantations.

315 On "White Privilege" No, it doesn't exist. Not at all. What *does* exist (do? anyway) is (are) socio-economic and family structure factors which help, at a very young age, determine how "easy" or "hard" your life will be. People born rich will face fewer "problems" than people born poor. People born into a family with a mom and a dad who are married to each other are less likely to have children out of wedlock themselves. People whose parents read to them and talk to them will tend to have better vocabularies and do better in school. Only one of those is an economic factor, and as your income goes up, the difference between you and the next group "below" you is less and less. None of them are racial factors. Now, here's the thing. Even these are only "tendencies." Exceptions are, by definition, exceptional- but they do occur. Further, they can all be overcome. That is- someone from a poor family where dad was never around and mom never had time to read to the kids can STILL be every bit as successful as someone from a more "privileged" situation- and then give that "privilege" to their own children.

321 146 Study: White People Are Pretty Dumb

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing

322 The case last night in NJ where the young husband was pulled from his car and shot defending his wife during a carjacking is a good case in point.  The wife was unharmed, she gave a full description of the two perps.

But all the media reported was two males, 20s, jeans, dark jackets, Yankees hats.  Good luck finding someone like that in north Jersey, eh?

Of course, people are becoming aware that when the race of suspects are not mentioned, it doesn't mean they are White Hispanics.

323 So economics is a factor there, but not destiny. Some, but not much. And it doesn't take a lot of time to read your kid into success. I've seen some studies that say something like an hour a week (that's less than 10 minutes a day). Unless you're at work every hour your child is awake (which, I guess, is possible), you've got time to read to your kid. But I'll go one further- each one being "negative" correlates to the others being more likely to be negative. Being poor makes it less likely that mom and dad will have time to read to the kids. There's also a high correlation between poverty and single-parent homes. It's real easy to start of in life with 3 strikes against you from the outset. That said- my original point remains: none of them are racial factors.

Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) Just in for a minute at December 17, 2013 10:49 AM (PYAXX)

324 Um, it appears to me that 43% of the white folks are color-blinded....I am another person that doesn't even think of what color someone's skin is when I hear of some type of crime or something....granted I do wonder about their religion or their political ideology or their nationality....but color of their skin? No. As you can see as a conservative tea party republican, I am NOT racist, however, I have some religious bigotry (of which I believe it's well founded) and also some strong national pride (which should also be well founded), and am very much prejudiced against ignorance where it makes it's ugly head visible in politics. Now, it is obvious that the difference between the 79% and 43% is a measure of some type of racial bigotry. The question is who is that 36%? I would imagine it's the Christ Matthews' of the world, the liberal elite who still obviously see the world in black and white.

Posted by: baldilocks at December 17, 2013 10:49 AM (36Rjy)

326 The "White Privilege" (someday I'll learn to spell "privilege without spell check) thing annoys me because the entire purpose of the theory is to ascribe blame on whites no matter what.

If you're white, you're to blame for any and all problems facing the black community.  Even if you've never taken a single racist action by word, thought or deed in your life, you are to blame because "white privilege".

The impression I get is that the "legacy of slavery" argument was getting stale, so they invented the "white privilege" smear to replace it.

Never, ever can it be suggested that some of the problems facing the black community are due to cultural issues within black society.  Never can the cure be to stop focusing on and creating racial divisions.

The PC / race hustlers do anything to prevent a color-blind society.  Without the race card, they have no reason to exist.

344 No one should feel guilty about things that they did not carry out personally, whether their ancestors did or not. Posted by: baldilocks Of course you and I know that ought to be the case; we as a society don't, for example, throw a man's son in jail for crimes the man himself committed. To even consider doing so is absurd. However, my point was that much of the "group guilt" and "white privilege" which the far-left assigns to "white people" as a whole is based on the faulty assumption that American whites are the descendants of slave-owners. Yes, it shouldn't even matter, because no one can be responsible for actions taken by an ancestor before one was even born; but my comment addresses race-baiters on their own territory and on the terms they set up: Even if we as a society embrace the morally repugnant notion of "blood guilt," of blaming entire races for the actions of their ancestors -- even in that scenario, American whites would still not assume blame for slavery, because the vast majority of American whites are not descended from slave-owners. Whereas possibly over over of people now classified as "black" are likely descended from slave-owners. Through no fault of their own, needless to say. Yes, we should reject the notion of "group guilt" entirely, but it's useful to point out that the notion fails even under its own set of rules.

347 To go further with this, I would claim that anti-white racism is a far bigger problem than anti-black racism. Anti-white racism is preached with impunity in our colleges (they refer to it as "white privilege"), without so much as definition of what it is, or a theory as to why it exists, as an example. It is practiced widely within the black community (as evidenced by the 2012 Presidential election), and everybody is afraid to point it out and call it for what it is. It is also widely practiced by Liberals, of course, most of whom are white, themselves. They actually pat themselves for how virtuous they are for proclaiming how racist they, themselves, are. We would not have ObamaCare if not for anti-white racism, and the massive unemployment, lawlessness at the highest levels of govt, and the general tyranny of the Socialist agenda. No candidate, R or D, could have said "you didn't build that", and still come close to being elected without it. Hell, Obama couldn't have been elected in the first place with out it. Both McCain and Romney were disarmed by its widespread acceptance in popular culture.

Posted by: Optimizer at December 17, 2013 11:29 AM (Mxt9o)

348 I wonder if they had asked about race in the first question or so if the study would have concluded that White people are very racist indeed. I am becoming jaded about racism. I was niave and thought to goal was to treat everyone the same. But I was wrong. And I resent that. It makes me question the whole point of not being racist. If it is to give some people preference, just a different group, then why are we so up in arms about preferences in the first place? Privilege according to race seems not to be wrong or unfair in the public mind. So why not favor our own race over others? Okay, well I would probably not asked about race, either. And I'm not entirely sure my motives would be color blindness, but rather the appearance of being racist and even admitting that I noticed taboo such things....

349 But isn't white privilege also considered to be just the idea that "whites have it better" by simple fact of being in the majority?  I've seen academics discuss it in terms of "seeing people of your own race in ads" and "being able to purchase bandages in your skin tone."

For some it is all about race.  Contrary to Freud, a cigar cannot just be a cigar.

Frequently there is no upside to acknowledging a the race of a black person.  I find myself avoiding blacks in general because of those who have created a no win situation for me.  I am not the racist, the dominant blacks who promulgate their tribalism (and those non-blacks with white liberal guilt) are the racists.  Because they have creatied the hostile mixed race environment.

Their victimhood, their ability to trump my innocence by taking offence, means that any relationship to them is fraught with bad faith.   Why even bother?

I have friends who are black, but knowing that they will not cause a problem for me lets me approach them as individuals, just like if I were to meet Chique d Afrique or Baldilocks.  I can relate to them based upon the content of their character, because they do not demand some reaction from me based upon the difference in the color of our skin.

353 @284 [zombie] That was long, but pretty interesting. I can offer my own insights from my own genealogical exploits. I'll start with my former sister-in-law, who is black. We looked into her roots many years ago, and that's when I learned that it's commonplace for blacks to have white roots. There was one story of an ancestor who was told, "You always wanted to know who your father was, well there he is:" [in the casket before her; her mother's long-time employer]. I also learned that blacks often have aboriginal roots, too [she did]. I really doubt your statistic. I think it would have to be closer to 95% of blacks in the US have white ancestry (altough I couldn't say how many were from non-consensual relations with slave owners). We had a black woman were I used to work who was more Irish than a lot of the white folks there - she had an Irish gt-grandpa, while they were Polish and Italian!! Then there's my mother, descendant of Irish and Germans who immigrated to the North around 1850. No slave owners there, and they were a generation before the Poles and Italians. If you go way, way back on my father's side, you find something unexpected. It's surprising to find a slave owner there, because it was in Colonial NY. I don't think slavery was ever very common in NY, but it wasn't actually outlawed until 1808. So one or two of the thousands of my ancestors who lived back then owned a slave. It was just one, and I don't know if I could say for sure if it was a black slave (if I'm not mistaken, there were white slaves also, although they were much less common). To reiterate zombies point, BRIEFLY, the overwhelming majority of whites in the US have little or no slave-owning ancestry, while the overwhelming majority of blacks DO!!

My understanding was that end of Bourbon was "The District" Same night, a little later, we're standing on the sidewalk talking to a large field hockey coach and I told Jeremy it was his turn to buy the drinks. "I'm not going in THAT place to get 'em!" He had no idea the next bar he walked into was the same thing. Even better, he comes back with drinks for us and the gal we're talking with, and her wasted girlfriend walks up yelling, wanting to fight me for trying to fcuk her girl. She looked like a slightly less attractive Andrew Zimmern wearing a crewcut wig, and I'm laughing because her girlfriend is threatening me while my buddy is cussing "THAT was a fucking gay bar too!" Good times. Good times.

Baldilocks is right about Watts.  One of my best buddies, a Chicano or Latino or Hispanic, is from close to that area.  We went by the house he grew up in and pointed out the empty lots that were created in the riots.

Along with being Hispanic or Latino or Chicano he is also a Civil War Reinactor.  Confederate, of course.

When I was a kid, early Sixties this was, I went to grammar school two blocks away from there.  One weekend afternoon, caught by a rainstorm, my mother and I took refuge just inside Cafe Lafitte, and found my school principal having a drink with a male friend at the bar.  The principal, you see, was married, and his son was in my class at school.

Years later my mother told me that the place was a gay hangout even then.  Now that doesn't prove that my principal was gay, but . . .
