Stuff That Will Cause Fights
— Ace

Mark Levin on the "French Republicans" of the House and Senate.

Here's his rant, in audio.

Obama says he will veto any bill containing a defund provision, which means he's vowing to shut the government down over an unpopular law. I wish someone would point that out.

Oh.

This is like when you have a losing team and they just want to keep doing the same thing. And then someone says "Let's try the Wildcat" and the team that's used to losing says "No that won't work; let's stick with our nonworking version of the West Coast Offense."

Well... you are always losing, soooo...

The other thing is that I feel like the Establishment is always telling us the agenda that will make their lives easier.

Well I know what agenda will make their lives easier-- obviously, an agenda that is just slightly to the right of the Democrats' leftist agenda would force the Democrats into the smallest space and open up a lot of space for Republicans.

In game theory, yes, that strategy will probably yield the most successes. I am not ignorant of that.

But what is the point then? We're not just rooting for a party like we root for a football team. (Although it does feel that way sometimes.)

We're pushing for a party to undertake specific efforts. Without those efforts, "winning" is purely a technical exercise.

We have an election coming up in 2014? Oh... right. Because we won't have one coming up in 2016, or 2018, or 2020...

There's always an election coming up, guys. For God's sakes. What kind of reasoning is this? Might as well say "We'll pay you back the Next of Never" and be done with it.

Here's the Bro version of that Opt Out of ObamaCare ad:

28 It will never make it to Obamas desk. Reid will save him. Fine. Then, instead of it being "Obama" shutting down the government, it's "The Democrats." Every Republican needs this on a note-card, and to memorize it for every media appearance they have: "The Republicans passed a Continuing Resolution in the House. It fully funded the government with the exception of ObamaCare- a provision which is wildly unpopular and already driving health care costs higher. It is up to [Insert "Obama" or "The Democrats" as appropriate] to pass that CR and fund the government. This is not a Republican-caused shutdown, it is a Democrat caused shutdown. The Democrats would rather force your healthcare costs higher than allow the government to function."

57 Creepy ad is creepy, yet it may work on some LIVs.  Why is this so hard?  The majority of the public does not want this sh*tty assed bill.  Every day, thousands more are finding out they're losing their insurance and being dumped onto the exchanges, more being moved to part time hours, more are having their premiums doubled or tripled.  It's a winning vantage point for the R's, yet very few speak out.  The ball will be in Barry's and Harry's court.  Tell the people over and over and over and over!  If the gov't shuts down, it is their fault.  But nobody will know it unless these useless R's (not counting Cruz, Lee, etc.) use the bullhorn repeatedly and loudly.  It's almost like they're not that into getting rid of it....or something.

That's basically the Brezhnev doctrine: history can only go forward. I suspect Barky and many of his crowd think that way. That's why they think Roe vs Wade is set in concrete but something they oppose (like the death penalty) can be endlessly challenged.

Posted by: Mallfly at September 19, 2013 10:11 AM (bJm7W)

63 There were no Republican votes to enact this law, no bipartisanship. Why then are the Republicans under ANY obligation to do anything that helps this monstrosity along? The answer is, of course, they are not.

And since this pos bill has been opposed by significant majorities of the people themselves since day 1, The Rs even have the moral high ground here.

Well, that's the thing, sir. o.O Hoping for the GOP to stand firm is roughly equivalent to trying to put cooked spaghetti back into the bag you bought it in.
You make a huge mess, get frustrated to all hell, and in the end what's the point anyways.
There is a very rough analogue with the Middle East peace talks that have been going on since before I was born. Just as you cannot force peace onto a people who desire war (the Muslims), so too can you not force responsibility onto those who revel in profligacy (the other half of our citizenry).
It's like trying to herd cats.

91 There were no Republican votes to enact this law, no bipartisanship. Why then are the Republicans under ANY obligation to do anything that helps this monstrosity along? Yeah, that's a fairly common argument now. "Hey, we passed this legislation now, under the cover of darkness against your will. Why aren't you helping?" Actually, Obama seems to be such a failure because we are just not doing enough for him.

There is no fight that the Boehner losers would ever take on NOW and to the hilt. It would always be the "wait, wait until the conditions are ripe." Bullshit. They were ripe the historic 2010 midterms. And what happened? Within weeks Boehner and Cantor were dissing and marginalizing the Tea Party as if they had nothing to do with the victory. All promises, actual and implied, were broken.

Cruz is challenging all of this crap. He's doing it straight-up and in the only way possible. And the following he's gathering is making a difference.

Please  bring this up with Gabriel on tonight's  podcast.  Serious, You Guys.

I want to know - let's say his hypothetical scenario where we continually cave to Democrats' demands for  a healthcare plan  that the majority  of Americans hate,  and that somehow means we win more Republican seats - THEN WHAT?

In this magical world  where a GOP  representative's constituents  reward him for  his betrayal  with re-election, and in the next district over,  the voters say, "Hey,  I'd like a faithless, spineless piece of shit JUST LIKE HIM" and we pick up additional  GOP seats - what then?

What  happens  when   we give the signal  for them to jump into action   and NOW start governing like conservatives?

Bonus  question:  explain to me how this plan to retain   and gain  additional  seats has a remote chance of success,  or if that's too esoteric - how is the GOP going to survive  without it's conservative base?

The government is sometimes a necessary evil, but it is always an evil. Thus, we should try to limit government at every level. I can't understand those who fear a shutdown. It will save us money, gain us seats, and wake up the LIVs. Every single federal program needs to be eyed for a cut.

With our  debt problems (you know, the ones that TFG wants to fix by raising the debt ceiling that he railed  W  about for years),    teh Pubbies have a perfect argument for dismantling entire departments.

Which is why they won't broach it.  I'd also like to see somebody on our side confront TFG with the little fact   that it's  HIS SPENDING     we  have to pay off.  How hard is it to bring out a little chart that   shows the debt from  the previous   administration compared to the  current one? $420B compared to  $1.6T?

I don't know but you might take this as an opportunity to question what other faulty information your "gut feelings" are feeding you, because Tom Delay was one of the biggest, most shameless pork-barrel spenders in GOP Congressional leadership history.  You seem beguiled by the whole "Hammer" mythos surrounding him.  Yes, and guess what that "Hammer" was used for during the '90s and 00's?  Beat dissident small-government Republicans into line and get them to vote for things like Medicare Part B and massive spending bills.

So maybe you're right: if Delay were in the House leadership today we might not be having these discussions, but only because he would be brutalizing small government/tea party Congressmen with threats both legal and questionably ethical.

But hey, you know what you're talking about, I'm sure.  You've got your gut!  Who needs a basic knowledge of recent history?  Facts are for pussies.

It's easy for Cruz and Lee, in safe seats and not even on the ballot next year, to go all in on it.  But they aren't even going to be able to blame Obama for it - Reid will not let the bill come to the floor unless he has the votes to beat it.  Nothing ever hits Obama's desk, he can keep his feet on it.

149 I'm using the mean girls theory.  The Republicans are part of the in group.  They are privy to all the "super secret information" that being part of the in group allows and their constituents aren't told because they aren't a part of the group.  They are making their decisions based on said "super secret information", perhaps thinking they are doing the right thing.  Problem is the in group always changes the "super secret information" it is sharing to insure a specific outcome, sort of like "don't ask any question you don't already have the answer to".   Therefore, the Congress and the Senate are the perfect patsies for the left to get all their stuff through.  They have put themselves in a nice little box.  They are trusting the "super secret information" being fed to them, thinking they are doing the right thing by the American people and probably thinking they are somehow protecting national security.  I've watched Congress and the Senate "stand down" too many times to make any sense.  I even watched the Supreme Court "stand down".  These are the alleged most intelligent folks on the planet, they've all become a bunch of patsies and the only explanation is that they think it has to do with national security and the welfare of the country.

The other option that they don't care about the country and their constituents is almost too much to fathom.

The State Department signaled that it would not insist that Syrian President Bashar Assad produce the list Saturday, the end of a seven-day period spelled out in the framework deal that Washington and Moscow announced last weekend in Geneva. Marie Harf, a State Department spokeswoman, said Wednesday that "our goal is to see forward momentum" by Saturday, not the full list. "We've never said it was a hard and fast deadline." Sure why not let obama negotiate with the Iranians? I mean he drives a hard bargain?

Yes, we are. Or, at least, they are. The many, many GOP voters and fierce supporters of Romney. They have little to no principles or ideological viewpoints. Hell, most of them never think about an issue any deeper than "I don't want to pay more taxes".

As for those who are personally invested in the party, like David Frum or Karl Rove, it is all about electoral victories, and nothing else.

But then, this all largely is the same for the Democrats, at this point. Both parties are now nothing more than corporate political entities, vying for their share of the government pie. They sniff at you if you dare suggest they work hard, or if you want them to actually fight for any values. After a while, they'll start threatening you if you don't vote for them.

Much like unions, really.

268 It was funny and cathartic but it didn't help. Actually, I disagree. It's hard to be a laughing stock. So the Saints kept trying new things (new coaches, new approaches, etc.) until they started winning. Part of that was the paper bags and the "ain'ts." Part of it was not making much money (since no one wanted to be associated with them). So the ownership (if they wanted more revenue) had no real choice but to keep fighting and clawing until they found something that worked. As a contrast, look at the Cowboys. They haven't won anything in 2 decades. They couldn't beat the Kansas City Chiefs last week. And when they do try to "change" things, they do it half-heartedly; timidly "trying" something new (without actually "trying" in the sense of putting effort into it) just to prove that it doesn't work. Yet they're still the most profitable US Professional Sports team. They're the single biggest earner in the NFL. As a result? Jerry Jones has no reason to change anything- so nothing changes.

314 I think Prager would also make a terrific debate moderator as well. I said that during the last campaign. That assumes the RINO leadership stops playing footsie with the MFM, of course.

315 I for the life of me cannot see the evil inherent in Congress passing what it wants, the President choosing to veto, and then Congress having to pass something that won't get vetoed. Where is the crime?

If the President wishes to veto, let him veto. It's his prerogative. But at least make him say he has no plans to alter course on ObamaCare, nor actually follow the law as enforced. And let him say he has moral power of the purse. Let him say that indeed.

Make him lay down a marker.

316 And you know what? The base was *fine* with that, until amnesty made everyone lose their minds. And if we're arguing about weakness now it means the RINO!!! hunting has NOT worked.

No, the base was most definitely NOT "fine" with that. I was starting to hear some grumbling as early as 2003-2004, but there was reluctance to criticize Bush too much because we were at war at the time and he had delivered tax cuts awhile back. It was a combination of Harriet Miers and amnesty which finally made them say "ENOUGH!"

I've said this before and I'll say it again. In politics, you need to give your voters results or you're going to get a backlash. The main reason the Democrats are successful is because the Democrats both believe what their base believes and fights relentlessly on their base's behalf to give them what they want. Republicans spend most of their time talking about how their base is comprised of dumb, ignorant, gap-toothed hicks who just don't understand the sublime game of ten dimensional chess being played in Washington by their betters.

If the party doesn't start delivering results to its voters, the voters are going to vote for and donate to someone else.
