Support for Gun Control Drops After Navy Yard Shooting
— Ace

Drops?

Support for gun control has dropped to its lowest level in a year, despite this weekÂ’s Washington Navy Yard shootings and a string of mass shootings over the past 14 months.

What's more, a new Rasmussen Reports poll finds that nearly half of all Americans--46 percent--believe that the nation would be less safe if only police and the military were allowed to have guns.

The poll is likely to shell shock those in Congress eager to revive gun control efforts in the wake of the Navy Yard shootings that left 13 dead, including the shooter.

Rasmussen found that just 33 percent believe stricter gun control laws would have prevented the Navy Yard shooting. Some 59 percent said more laws wouldnÂ’t have stopped the shooter.

Well that's correct -- gun control is unlikely to prevent purchases of the Joe Biden endorsed shotgun, unless the left implements its actual plan and confiscates every gun -- but I'm slack-jawed shocked that the public actually knows this.

2 CeaseFire, the Chicago-based anti-violence group at the focus of the 2011 documentary "The Interrupters" is shutting two of its offices as funding dries up. The organization laid off staff at its North Lawndale office in August and will close its Woodlawn office later this month now that a $1 million grant from the city of Chicago ran out, according to ABC Chicago. 3 but I'm slack-jawed shocked that the public actually knows this.

That is weird.

And let me take a moment to spit on the media for including the perp in their shooting "death counts" ("left 13 dead" instead of "12 murdered").  *spit*   Every single fucking time.

8 "Rasmussen found that just 33 percent believe stricter gun control laws would have prevented the Navy Yard shooting."

Note that this is even with news coverage that is completely unfactual and slanted to push gun control, such as the NYT claim that the Navy Yard shooter had tried to buy an AR-15 in Virginia, but had been rebuffed by a Virginia gun control law prohibiting such sales to buyers from out of state.

No such law actually exists. ("Layers of fact-checkers and editors.")

61 Liberals love them their logic and damn the facts. You know what I mean: "The reason there is so much crime in Chicago and not in Vermont is because criminals get guns where they're easy to get and and use them where it's hard to get them: that's why we need to ban guns everywhere." And the reason criminals get involved in high speed chases is because they get cars where it's easy to speed and take them to places where it's hard to speed. Gotcha, Senator Ma'am.
You know, let me rephrase my first sentence... Liberals have their heads up their butts. Yeah, that works better.

No, dummies.  Support for gun control dropped BECAUSE OF the shootings.  That's because people with  common sense realize  that the only  thing that  can protect you from   incoming   gunfire  is return  fire.

Even if we could all walk around in  self-enclosed pillboxes that were proofed  against small arms fire,  crazies would still find a way to kill you, like running you over with a  truck,  pushing you into a pool  or  trapping you in a corner and  building a fire against your  panic box until the heat killed you.

Crazy  and/or  murderous  fuckers don't stop until  someone MAKES  them stop.  How fucking simplistic  and naive  do  you have to be to recognize this very basic  fact  of  human  nature?  I mean,  we only have thousands of years of recorded human history to  document  this very issue.  For fuck's  sake - crack a book sometime,  libtards.

Yet at least 33 percent of the population is evidently unable to reason beyond "guns bad, so ban guns."

O/T, but here's my e-mail to my rep about yesterday:

Dear Representative Tierney:

I do not generally make a habit of contacting politicians, as I find your concerns are generally centered on how you can avoid the curse of the private sector, but your walkout, along with twelve or your collagues during yesterday's hearing on the Benghazi debacle has caused me to write. That you would indulge in a cheap partisan gesture at that time was an insult to the families of those killed at Benghazi on 9/11/12, and an insult to your constituents.

These men who gave their lives on that date were not wannabe thugs like Trayvon Martin or partisan political activists like Code Pink. They were honorable men who gaves their lives in service to a country that they, wrongly, believed would come to their aid in their hour of need. Men who were abandoned by a strutting mountebank of a president who dismissed them as "bumps in the road" and by a mendacious Secretary of State who shrugged and asked "what difference" their deaths made.

We have a right to expect common decency from a person we elect (and pay) to represent us in Congress. You have failed our trust.

I neither expect you to apologize to the families whom you dishonored by your cowardly retreat, nor even to suffer any political blowback; certainly the Boston Globe will make sure this story stays buried -but I do wish you to know that at least one of those in your district finds your action yesterday contemptible.

Sincerely,

86 When did they start counting the shooter among the dead? I've always read "21 dead" to mean "21 murdered." The shooter, dying either by his own hand or by cop, is the perpetrator; adding his death into the final count insinuates (for me, anyway) some sort of victimhood.

"“As a woman I have the right not to carry a gun and to feel safe on the streets, and that’s what we provide for in the state legislature is for all of us in the state of Colorado — to feel safe on the streets without having to carry a gun. There is nothing better than law and order for public safety. 89 If you are unarmed when a mass shooter shows up, you are out of options.  If you have a gun, you can return fire.

People GET this on an instinctual level.  Everyone works or has worked with someone who they fear will snap and show up to kill everyone.  I know I have.

While I consider them at fault on the Snowden issue, the Alexis issue is a little different.

Snowden had a Top Secret clearance, which requires extensive vetting, interviews with friends, neighbors, landlords, teachers, relatives, any mental health professionals etc along with digging into your financial history.  All of that is regardless of outcome.  Last week, even though it's been covered in previous clearance investigations on me, I got asked about a traffic ticket from 1995.

Alexis had a Secret, which basically requires/consists of the same things required to pass a background check for a firearms purchase.

I'm surprised they did any interviews.  When was it?  When I got mine in the early 90s, all they did was check the records of LE agencies everywhere I'd lived and ran me through the FBI database.

Posted by: Country Singer at September 20, 2013 08:45 AM (L8r/r)

155 A little surprised. Staying with my sister at the moment, the only thing they ever watch is local news, ABC, and comedy central. All three very liberal. John Stewart was interviewing Hugh Jackman and was all "Hey, I hear Australia is way more progressive than us stupid Americans. They just gave up all of their guns all peaceful like!" and Jackman was all "yea, one day you neanderthals will catch up." [Note: I'm paraphrasing. Go watch the clip of the show to see what I mean]

They ended the show with an old, dusty looking Republican sitting in an expensive looking library, being interviewed, croaking out the words "you know... blaming the gun for... for this...for the shooting... well that's like... like blaming spoons for obesity!" The message being that 1. All Republicans are old, dusty, rich, white men. And 2. Well that's really it, actually.

Anyway, point is, with this kind of mockery that the left is constantly able to deploy, I'm really shocked that gun control support has DROPPED. Perhaps it's too soon to get an accurate reading.

157 Well, let's see: The government had clear evidence of the shooter's schizophrenia. The government didn't institutionalize him. The government didn't charge, try, or convict him for his violent abuse of guns motivated by his paranoia. The government, when asked to do a background check on the shooter said it was OK to sell him a shotgun. The government gave him a security clearance and access to a fenced-in guarded secure area where the government had disarmed all his intended victims. The government didn't find the shotgun when he went through the guarded gate. The government told the SWAT team to stand down once the shooting started. Gee, I can't imagine why the people wouldn't be enthusiastic about giving yet more of their rights and entrusting more of their personal safety to this same government. Can you?

A lot of the problem is that with the wars, there was too much backlog on getting the investigations done.  Too many people needed clearances and various agencies were getting upset that it was taking so long for clearances to be granted, in some cases up to two years.  As a result, the contractors were brought in to distribute workload.

Have we reached the fabled "tipping point"? Are enough Americans now getting it, that the problem is not enough "gun control" but rather sick individuals rampaging through gun-free zones, and that more restrictions aren't the answer? Are people realizing that as their faith in government and the "system" erodes individuals need their own protection; that an over-militarized police force and State not only won't protect them in the immediate moment of a shooting but is also a threat to their long-term freedom?

Wouldn't that be something, if it were true. That the Left has finally hit the point of diminishing returns on their own fear-based tyrannical ambitions.

209 Don't they ever consider that announcing that armed outlaws will not be effectively opposed is bad policy? Would these assholes put a lawn sign in front of their house advertising that the owners are unarmed?

Yet at least 33 percent of the population is evidently unable to reason beyond "guns bad, so ban guns."

Posted by: Cicero (@cicero) at September 20, 2013 12:27 PM (8ZskC)

This^^^. Perhaps what individuals could do, is this: Know some asstard anti-gun proggie? Make a nice neat sign, and (anonymously) stick it in his lawn: "Gun-Free Home". If it's an apartment block or condo, "Unit/Suit 4A is a Gun-Free Home". See how long the signs stay up. If the asstards start complaining about being victimized in this way, you can say, "Well, see here, what that tells me is that you have been getting a free ride on the fear of would-be home invaders that you are armed, and able to protect yourself."

216 It just goes to show how you can sway public opinion if you engage the public and everyone pulls together.  You can't win when you have people like King and Boehner making it clear they don't really believe in anything but what is politically expedient.  And we can't win just by talking amongst ourselves.  We have to comment and argue in neutral territory and enemy territory to win.  Where we have done that with gun control and global warming we have won.

People can smell insincerity and weakness.  They don't respond to it.  Obama is a true believer, and even though what he believes in is straight up totalitarianism and eating baby puppies people will flock to his surety.  Cruz, Palin and Paul have that sort of surety.  Which is why the hacks have to try to destroy them.  The hacks (like King) think they will improve their own prospects by destroying those of better men (or women) than themselves.  We should stop heeding them or giving them any sort of platform at all.

218 at a gut level you hope people realize how helpless the victims were in this and almost all other mass shootings. helpless and dead because of gun control measures, particularly the gun free zone. I wish we could rely on law enforcement to stop this kind of attack, but we really need to be able to protect ourselves. It's just reality, and despite the hemming on TV, it is a basic reality that is highlighted with every one of these massacres.

Oh, most of the public does undrstand that "Once guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns."  That gets derogated as just a bumper sticker slogan, but its truith is self evident to anyone not ideologically in denial.  I would think many people are starting to say that, "With all these shootings" (not really that many, but the media plays them up) where the police only arrive after the body count is in double digits, maybe I should carry some protection."

Would not be the first time our lying-sacks-of-s**t media outsmart themselves with their lies and spin.

"shelter in place."  That's it. That is your defense. I think when people hear of multiple shooters, shooters out and about seemingly for hours and the police tell you to "shelter in place" folks have a HOLYFUCK moment. The police are telling you they are not outside your building watching out for you but chasing down the scumbags. . On some level they realize that their defense is not from the police who are chasing said same scumbags but by hiding under the desk. And that seems pretty damned shitty. Maybe people look to ease the stress by moving more towards owning a gun someday  or getting comfortable that someone with a gun will shoot his ass.
