— Ace The meteor that hit Russia turned out to be not 10 tons, as originally thought, but 10,000 tons.
And, the funny thing is, that's so "small" an object we can't even track things that size.
And there are 100,000 objects in that size range "likely" to hit earth at some point.
Ace of Science: I don't know what purpose there is to making cells which actually get healthier after they die (what?), but there's gotta be some purpose.

If we can't track them, who counted them? And what were the odds that there would be exactly 100,000?

Here is what I posted at the end of the LAST thread, which I am putting here even though it is off-topic because by gooly, I want someone to think about it!!
-----------------------
#84 Rome13, I am wondering about those former SEALS who are saying that there is a "secret war" going on in Libya and other parts of North Africa.
The inference was that the orders came from the White House and bypassed the chain of command. So who gave those orders? Either it was that nutball Brennan acting on his own, in which case he should be fired and in jail, or it was Obama, in which case there should be a congressional inquiry to see what the hell is going on.
The rumors of Obama getting his jollies watching drone strikes indicates to me that he is in on it, but he is so clueless it could be that Brennan is giving the orders and then calling him in to watch the strikes, as a way to curry favor and get his nomination as CIA director.
However, some of this could be my paranoia, as I am convinced all of them are evil, and there might be a logical explanation for all of this. I can't think of one, but I am willing to listen if anyone has one.

This is what makes me pessimistic about the future of our beloved country. Institutionalized one-party rule causes this. A vibrant opposition keeps both sides honest. On the national level, we need to do something about gerrymandered districts. I live in a district with a hard core leftist as my representative. My vote is meaningless. because that's the way they designed it.

Okay, call me crazy, but I think the total destruction of all life or earth is a bit of overkill for a political problem. Can't we just Mongol raping, pillaging and slaughtering of all living creatures in the cities? That would fix most everything.

So, you're whizzing away and this thing falls down lid first bang!, and while you're trying to pinch the flow you're bending over frantically trying to pick the damn lid back up as you're hosing it and the seat down, and try to lean over and hold it while you finish because the "stem the flow" thing didn't go so well.
Luckily, nobody can hear you pissing on plush carpet. Unluckily, you really can't do much to blot it dry. That's when I discover that it was carpeted to be a nice cushy surface to sit on - I mean, WTF? Who sits on a carpeted toilet you guys?
Oh wait, wrong thread.

It's cheap - and disgusting. A lot of builders will do it everywhere but the water closet - but I've seen plenty of carpet around the toilet. Good God. I'm lucky to hit that thing on a good day. Personally, I tile the walls behind the toilet. My dream house is going to have a WC that's a tiled cubicle with a hole in the floor - basically a shower. Oh wait.

The candygram is for the Mongol Horde, which presumes that it is the Mongol Horde who is inside and whom you are exhorting not to open the door. I'd be more inclined to worry for the person delivering the candygram.

Someone points out a simple solution to a known situation.
The design is drawn up and spec'd out and looks good but before the contract can be rewarded some bright spark in the puzzle palace decides that now would be a good time to exert themselves and show how important their particular fiefdom really is and sends memos to all concerned that this particular platform would also be IDEAL for this other job/mission if they only added xyz and put in abc electronics or added fgh additional equipment/armor. Everyone concerned (except the original designer) jumps on board the latest new project to stake out their own particular specialty and requirements.
By the time they're done, the platform is over weight, under powered and now costs 5 times as much (as estimated) and it's original mission is looking iffy as to whether it even can get accomplished under the onus of all the additional gear and changes to the envelope.
then we come to the building phase. The contractor (knowing they're getting time and material) bids outrageously low so as to acquire the rights to keep sucking on that govt' teat for just a little longer until they can merge with OdonnellMartinRaytheonDouglasGeneralElectric and bail before the sub par performance reviews start coming in from testing. You guys.
