Swiss Researchers Claim Quality of Sleep Linked to Phase of the Moon
— Ace

This is a bit stale now but I hadn't seen it before.

The study involved only 30 people and wasn't even designed to test a linkage between "disturbed sleep" and the full moon. It was just a general sleep test. But they realized they had the data to analyze their patients' sleep according to what phase of the moon it was at the time of the study.

"We were sitting outside a pub, and we were looking at the full moon" when they hatched their plan, Cajochen remembers. In an unrelated earlier study, the scientists had collected detailed observations on the sleep patterns of some 30 healthy people — young and old, men and women — as they spent three days sleeping in a lab at various times of the month. The sleepers had been in light-controlled rooms, so were shielded during the study from any changes in daylight — or moonlight — outside the lab, and hadn't been asked anything at all about the moon.

In their current , published this week in Current Biology, Cajochen and his colleague looked back at that old data set and did some number crunching to compare how the people slept at different stages of the lunar cycle.

"We found that people who entered the lab during a full moon slept, on average, 20 minutes less than people who came in during the new moon phase," Cajochen says. Deep sleep was also significantly reduced among people who were in the lab during a full moon, versus those at the lab during a new moon. And the sleep-inducing hormone also declined during a full moon.

More:

Researchers also found that it took about five minutes longer for participants to fall asleep around a full moon than around a new moon. Deep sleep was, on average, 30% decreased around the time of a full moon.

Other scientists are pretty skeptical. Not only was this a small study, but no person actually was part of the study for all 30 days of the phases of the moon. They're comparing the sleep of one guy at one phase to the sleep of another guy at another phase.

Eh. I had trouble sleeping the last few nights and it was indeed a full (or nearly full) moon.

So I'll decide that this is true.

62 Best thing for science in the future is if someday we can have AI automatically analyze the data to double check the data and analysis of the avalanche of crap science papers published every year. Right now there's no incentive to double check anything. All the incentives are for academics to publish any semi-plausible result, especially anything that might get some media, and then move on to the next publishable result. Vast majority of published papers will never be read by other scientists -- except for the skimming done in the fraud known as peer review. Hell most papers aren't even re-read by the people who write them. They are forgotten the moment they are accepted for publication.

72 If I were looking for the simplest explanation to moon fever it would be that a full moon provides more moonlight. Light that keeps people outdoors, drinking and drugging longer, and makes crazy people wandering around more visible. Kind of like nice weather means more crime. That doesn't explain all of the stats I'm sure, but I bet it's part of the moon/crime correlation.

76 All peer review can do is, sometimes, spot blatantly obvious errors or really lazy fraud. It can't detect most errors or even most fraud. It's only when you are hated for some reason -- like climate skeptics -- that your peer reviewer will do more than skim the paper.

127 I didn't check their race, but I wondered.  Figures.  Blacks are being fed a steady diet of hate-whitey... and acting out against a stranger doing something so stupid as jogging...   Could have nothing to do with it but I got out my Jump to conclusion Mat, and that's what I came up with.

128 Imagine a scenario where it's a young black foreign student here in America on an athletic scholarship -- a promising young guy from Nigeria here on a soccer scholarship. And three "bored" white teenagers execute him while he's out for a jog, training for his sport. It'd be huge news. It would be an indictment of America's inherent racism. Nobody would believe their "boredom" bullshit excuse. But this will be treated as just another "local crime story". No "jogging while white" stories to see here.
