Sydney Leathers, JaneXO, and Slouching Towards Idiocracy
— Ace

Lisa DePasquale was a little hurt that Jane Pratt, who was a childhood hero of hers for editing teen girls' magazines that appealed to the "Smart Girls," is now peddling Sydney Leathers' Idiot's Guide to Getting Older Married Men to Masturbate for You Over the Internet how-to manual.

I linked this in the sidebar yesterday -- but I assumed she was self-publishing or maybe had some kind of deal via, I don't know, Vivid Entertainment's literary imprint, if you can imagine such a thing.

Nope! Teen Girl's Magazine. (Correction: I'm told it's a women's magazine for girls who used to read the teen magazine Sassy. But see my note at the end.) Click the link to the see the story and read what Jane Pratt thinks is important information for teen girls.

How sad is this?

Teen magazines used to peddle the fantasy of becoming a Fashion Model.

Now they peddle the fantasy of becoming a Vagina Model.

This really made me sad for the pathetic current state of the human condition in America in the Age of Obama. How low will we actually go? When teen magazines are celebrating a half-wit's skill at baiting men into 'batin', how far are we from Idiocracy?

[O]ur culture is increasingly dominated by a celebration of the cheap, base, and vulgar, taking Idiocracy not as a frighteningly plausible warning but rather as a fun model to emulate.

When even a teen girl's magazine is celebrating "'batin'" -- instructing teen girls how to masturbate for older married men -- then our society is now championing an essentially animal-level existence. Not just in terms of morality -- the bien pensants will always scoff at such a bourgeois construction -- but also in terms of intellect. Something the bien pensants once pretended to be interested in championing.

This is lower than moral nihilism -- at least nihilism requires some kind of conscious, intellectual determination at the outset.

This is simply a kind of willful devolution, the human animal deciding to give up the higher functions of its brain and go back to pack-feeding and rutting.
Thinking and standards are difficult and boring.

But Dumb is Easy and Easy is Holy.

It's become a kneejerk response to praise the awful, to binge on guilty pleasures, to feed upon little but the rankest crap.

Isn't this fun? Isn't this terribly naughty? Isn't this thrilling to the spirit, mind, and senses?

It's none of those things. I stand second to no man in appreciation of the erotic or comically transgressive but that's not what we're seeing here. And I'm a bit of a scholar and fan of the vulgar. But this is simply the crudest form of reality tv television, now spreading to print like genital crabs.

It occurred to me, long ago, that the transgressive is only interesting and naughty and daring if there is actually a line capable of being crossed; it is only having a gress to trans in the first place that gives the step a sense of danger and makes viewers, readers, or participants feel a frisson of "getting away with something naughty."

...

So what now, when there are no lines to cross anymore? When there is no boundary across which it may be unsafe to step? When there are no dark and silent woods at all for Red Riding Hood to venture into, but only a carnival landscape of garish neon lights and the unending carnival-barking come-ons of brothel wranglers?

Is there any bottom to be found here, or will we just continue devolving into actual animals?

It's a good piece, if I may so so myself, and if I may not say so myself, @NickKronos and @rdbrewer4 said so too.

A Commenter Says...

This whole thing is awful and tawdry, but XOJane isn't a teen girls magazine. It's a website for grownups who used to read Sassy.

Well, okay, but aren't these dumb magazines still really sold to girls?

But in any event, I lay the same charge at them: Dumbing Down The World.

My objection is really not moral here, per se. It's intellectual (which is actually a type of moral objection, in a way).

What got me is not so much that this is a magazine for girls -- a lot of magazines that are really for girls (Cosmo, etc.) are pretty filthy.

What gets me is that this is the magazine for smart girls. Apparently the smart girls are now Stupid Whores, too.

I actually don't mean that -- many of XOJane's readers objected to the article. But XOJane apparently decided that the whole "Smart Girl" act was getting to be a pain so perhaps just let's go the route of Dumpster Fire Barbeque.

The culture isn't just crude in terms of morality. It's even cruder in terms of intellectual aspiration. We glorify the stupid and unfortunate, or, at least, we pay them to degrade themselves for us so that we may feel superior.

But are we? I would say more but I'd be repeating the whole end of my article.

18 what really bothers me is that girls these days eat this up.  I had a gay friend years ago who called this phenom "Plan A, Plan B Girls."  I asked him at the time because he commented i was one of the very few women he met who wasnt one.

He explained that it went like this "Plan A, Marry money live comfortably. Till Plan B, he's not fun anymore, take as much money of his as you can, find another guy, rinse, repeat." I was horrified, but knew exactly what he meant. There are lots of women who aspire to nothing more than either being kept, or being the other half of a "power couple" if they are particularly ambitious. Normal people are getting far fewer especially in LA.

This shit is what teaches girls that its not only but ACCEPTABLE AND DESIREABLE to be that kind of girl. When i was growing up i distinctly remember being that kind of girl was kind of looked down on as shameful.

Aristotle deemed us "rational animals" never forget the first part, it's equally important.

Precisely what separates us from animals is our ability for critical thinking which gives rise to morality.

When we act merely like animals we debase ourselves.

The whole point of the human brain is so that we DON'T act like animals.  We use reason and    forethought    and (once upon a time) morality   to inform our behavior.     All three of those things has been steadily eroded over the last several decades.

90 So what it looks like is Teen Magazine and the 'gatekeepers' of culture, the arbiters of proper behavior are now grooming young teens to be the playthings of rich men?

Since organized religion, well Judea-Christian religion, has been effectively discredited over the last fifty years by these same people, that now proper behavior for young girls is to find themselves, and be attractive to, rich sugar daddies (rich young men from Middle-Eastern Oil families).

Yep, destroying western civilization and devolving to a culture of ancient, 7th century war lords. This is progress.

Is it that the teeny bopper fanzines are that desperate for anyone to pay attention in the digital world; or is it that like Hollywood, the editors of these mags are deciding to let their freak flags fly openly?

That's been a theory that I've come to - the reason for the big push to normalize every possible sexual perversion is the media/Hollywood wanting to celebrate and do openly what they actually do in private.  Not to have it tolerated in their own little corner of the world but to have the whole world celebrate their courage to be really weird and icky.

Fact is,  men are sexual animals and always have and will be.  Women were the gatekeepers who kept the animals in control as they had control of the P.

Once the gatekeepers decided to no longer be gatekeepers and distribute the P without regard,  society was lost.    Men no longer have to marry.  Men no longer have to be gentlemen.   Men no longer have to work hard.    And believe it or not,  humor will also suffer because  men no longer have to make women laugh.

I remember how controversial it was with glamorizing the LA lifestyle and the like when it came out and then I read it and thought "dude, he's preachy as all hell". Julian's death is pretty much portrayed as being both inevitable and deserved. This is much the same as the people who think that Trainspotting, both book and movie, glorify the junkie life and I'm all what the actual fuck did you read/watch because it wasn't the work itself. Speaking of Less Than Zero, I remember when watching RDJ play Julian was sitting there slack jawed staring at the screen at the perfect intersection of character and actor. Posted by: Lincolntf at August 07, 2013 02:55 PM (ZshNr) Except it's not a "broken and failed philosophy". It's about power, plain and simple. A population made up of uneducated ravening beasts is not capable of self-government. They must be ruled and controlled. It's all part of the Progressive/Gramscian plan.

273 Ace is probably not interested in a quasi religious explanation for what we are going through, but there is such a thing as a Cycle of Apostasy. In Old Testament terms it is a cycle characterized by Four Phases:
I. Devout faith and hard work builds a strong nation.
II. The nation becomes prosperous and moves away from God.
III. The nation declines... precipitously ... as a result of its loss of faith
IV. Survivors of the collapse... the strong and faithful... survive and return to Phase 1.

(We are deep into Phase III, BTW).

It isn't necessary for the Cycle of Apostasy to be strictly a religious phenomenon. It is utterly explainable in secular terms.
1. Hard work and delayed gratification enables a nation to build and store wealth.
2. As the nation grows wealthy, there is less need for hard work and self-denial because of the wealth the nation has banked. vWhen enough wealth is banked, the nation becomes capable of supporting a non-productive class.
3. As the non-productive class expands and the work ethic declines, the national wealth is exhausted, leading to collapse.
4. Only those who have maintained the work ethic and the ability for self-denial survive to rebuild.

Once again, we are in Phase 3 of the Cycle.

275 #28  Yes,  blame the Boomers.  It's always someone else's fault.

I am a Boomer.  I grew up in the age when girls were loose if they went "all the way."  Girls in my high school who got pregnant went to the home for unwed mothers or to stay with an out of town relative until the baby was born,  although most got hastily arranged marriages.

I didn't sign on to any of this.  I do not allow my grandkids to even use the word "fart" in public,  let alone this other stuff.  My children do not participate in this type of stuff,  nor do my grandkids.

Heck,  not only do I not have tattoos,  I don't even have pierced ears!

This has been pushed by Hollywood and the media,  and because of the breakdown in the family (another result of the sexual revolution warned about by several Popes but everyone thought they were just being meanies) we will have more and more of this.

It is rather like the slums of 18th century London,  only instead of gin mills we have meth and crack.  Unfortunately,  I do not see a John Wesley on the horizon to ignite a Great Awakening.

Posted by: Miss Marple at August 07, 2013 11:28 AM (GoIUi)

276 I date the beginning of the decline to Watergate. The minute the MSM realized that they could overturn the Democratic process, we were doomed. A relatively minor bit of political dirty-trickery was used to take down a popular POTUS who had just been re-elected in a landslide, to the horror of the MSM. After all, no one THEY knew had voted for Nixon. The MSM ignored Kennedy's drug addiction, serial philandering, and outright theft of the 1960 election. But a break-in during which nothing was stolen was, to them, the scandal of the century. Nixon's biggest crime was resigning. It only served to encourage and embolden the MSM. It's been all downhill from there.

And when you see people behaving like mere trash, it's because they don't aspire to be more than trash; and perhaps cannot.

312 The problem with contemporary feminism is that it could never decide if it was pro-sex or anti-sex. In the '60s the First Wavers kicked things off by burning their bras and being as promiscuous as possible without apologies. Just a few years later in the early '70s this was seen as catering to men's debauched demands and caving in to the patriarchy, so the pendulum swung the other way and it was no to men, no to porn, no to sex, and yes to strident political lesbianism, with short hair and bitter faces. Then the pendulum swung back again somewhat in the mid-late '70s with the whole hedonism thing -- and then swung back again to "boycott sex with anyone who voted for Reagan," which then transitioned to praising abortion as the highest moral act, which they only starting focusing on because it was is opposition to whatever the Reagan Revolution wanted. But in oder to have an abortion, you have to be pregnant, which means sex with those icky penises -- but hey, we all have to suffer for the cause. And on and on it went. After several more swings of the pendulum, they then have to first defend Anita Hill from the sexual advances of Clarence Thomas -- and only a few years later, completely switch sides and defend Bill Clinton from his many whorish accusers -- those bitches! By this time (mid/late '90s), no one really even knew what feminists even wanted any more. And that was 18 years ago. By now, it's just a muddle of whining and shapeshifting confusion, which exists as a purported "philosophy" only to ensure that women vote Democratic.

That is why animals can continue to function  even though they are part of the food chain.   They have no  ability to think of  the future and its possible consequences.

This allows antelopes to return to grazing  so  soon  after one of their buddies just got taken down by a lion.    Humans try to  not to repeat  actions that have resulted in bad consequences.

I'm going to connect this story to the last one, since it should be (and  probably already has):

Of COURSE it's about morality!!  Look at what is going on all around us, and one of the biggest problems that exists in our society is the fact that people believe they are free to have sex with anybody they want.

You know, people all those years ago didn't object to that because they wanted to be prudes.  They objected because societies break down when you have girls who want to bang anybody/anything, like they're men, and when you have congressmen who prey on them.

How is it we live in a world where women are being pawed on by monsters, and there isn't a universal cry, starting with the woman who is being pawed, and by EVERY OTHER MALE IN THE VICINITY telling him, no, it's not ok.  It doesn't matter if you are a congressman or president or anyone else.  It's not ok.

So stop it.  Or expect the real men of this world to  knock your teeth out of your mouth, and there isn't a  court in this country who should EVER consider prosecuting.

I'm going to make a bet.  When the 2014 elections start getting nearer and the candidates start throwing their hats into the ring, we'll be getting a lot of discussion on the evils of socons.   Why should socons be telling us what's right and wrong  or morally degrading.

We need to talk only about fiscal issues.

I consider your questioning of my veracity a nano-aggression:

http://tinyurl.com/ltfllsy

And from the article:

The term “racial microaggression” was first used in the 1970s by psychiatrist Chester Pierce, MD. A definition of the term from Dr. Derald Wing Sue, a psychology professor at Columbia University, states, in part, that “Racial microaggressions are the brief and everyday slights, insults, indignities and denigrating messages sent to people of color.”

342 and of course the Left's never-ending campaign to replace God with Man

352 MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Assault Hobbit: "Next time you're being attacked by a wild dog, try reasoning with it about why it shouldn't kill you."

To be fair the wild dog might be reasoning, "Lunch!", so it's not necessarily an irrational animal. Now, is that instinct or reasoning? That's actually a provocative question. At what point is it discernible for the sake of species fitness?

I don't know. We survive at the top of the food chain because we have a nice cerebrum and most of us choose to use it. But where is the line that says either, "I'm doing this because I can't help myself," or "I'm doing this because I choose to in order to survive"?

The line can get blurry.

As for wild dogs' art preferences, it climaxed (and I would argue collapsed) when they did a portrait playing cards. Completely irrational and unreasoned.
