Take A Break From The Darkness [OregonMuse]
— Open Blogger

Some of the TV shows I've been watching recently include Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Hell on Wheels and Copper. I like them, I think they're well-crafted and entertaining, but all of them are pretty dark and the plots usually involve conflicts between various shades of bad guys. Mrs. Muse has stopped watching most of them because there's nobody she likes, or can identify with.

A steady diet of this sort of thing kind of wears on my soul after awhile, so every now and then it's good to watch something more uplifting. This is why I recommend Ocean Heaven, a 2010 Jet Li movie, and no, this is not a martial arts film. Jet Li is a widower whose life revolves around caring for his severely autistic son, now almost an adult. The father has just been diagnosed with cancer of the liver and has only a few months to live, and he has to figure out how to see that his son is taken care of after he's gone. Jet Li is a surprisingly good actor in this role, and Wen Zhang gives a remarkable performance as the autistic son.

So here you have a story about good people struggling to cope with the adversity that life throws at them, rather than an evil bad guy trying to rip off some other, slightly more evil, bad guy, and I found it rather refreshing.

The trailer makes Ocean Heaven look kind of sappy, but it really isn't.

And below the fold, more evidence that all movies are action movies now:

Also, open thread. The previous one was starting to smell like ace's feet.

You'll have people you can identify with.  Unfortunately, they tend to be horribly killed by the bad people on a regular basis.

75% of the people on that show are drooling morons.  They don't like a house because they'd have to repaint and rip out the carpet when the house is $25k under budget.  My favorite is the international ones where the American's don't realize that Europeans have tiny kitchens and/or bathrooms before they move there.

In White Queen I like to look up the history to see how closely it is following what is known.  They called George George the Fool because he was a drunk, and that's why they executed him by drowning him in a barrel of Malmsey wine.

The baby Isabelle gave birth to on the boat was actually a girl, and she did give birth to two sons.  The first was learning disabled and the second died a few days after birth.

Margaret, mother of who would be Henry the VII, was married at 12, pregnant and widowed 3 months before she gave birth at 13.  The birth was so difficult, due to her young age, she and baby Henry nearly died.  That's why she never had another child, would not have sex with her two other husbands, and wanted to be a nun

Here are the pansies, including Ron Johnson, who are freaking out in the senate over being called what they are. The NYT is releasing the names of the Mike Lee/Ted Cruz lynch mob:

"And on Wednesday at a private luncheon, several Senate Republicans — Dan Coats of Indiana, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire — assailed Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, who has led the movement to block funding for the health law.

Ms. Ayotte was especially furious, according to two people present, and waved a printout from a conservative group friendly to Mr. Cruz attacking 25 of his fellow Republican senators for supporting a procedural vote that the group counted as support of the health law.

Ms. Ayotte asked Mr. Cruz to disavow the group’s effort and demanded he explain his strategy. When he did not, several other senators — including Mr. Johnson, Mr. Coats and even Mitch McConnell, the minority leader — joined in the criticism of Mr. Cruz."

Wow, what a disappointment Ayotte has been. A total freaking goddamned sellout. Plus they even mentioned my congressman Mr. Reichert, who is always ready to sellout.

So. I was doing some blacksmithing today, trying to covert a piece of rebar into a kind of thumbscrew to tighten a sawblade, and forgot for a second to always make sure that the tongs gripped the piece top and bottom, not along the sides, before I gave it a whack. Up in the air goes the piece of red-hot metal, directly over my head and down straight into my bag of charcoal. Whee! Of course the bag immediately catches fire. Fortunately, I was able to get save the small amount of charcoal that remained inside, but was then left holding a really big, flaming paper bag, trying to figure out where to put it where it wouldn't set something else on fire - I eventually just threw it on a nearby sidewalk and let it burn itself out.

So that was exciting.

189 COJ The powr widdle pitchers feel like you're "showing them up" if you admire your yard work or run to slow around the bases. Then they gotta throw at ya to show ya whose boss. Next pitch, the bat "slipped" out of his hands and went spinning out to the mound at knee level.

Well, that is what the Tudors said, anyway. Of course, they had a stake in both ensuring that the boys didn't resurface and in blackening the name of the man whom they had killed to gain the throne....

It has been a long time since I read much about that era of English history, but I believe that there is some good evidence to suggest that Henry VII was the culprit, not Richard III.

Margaret, mother of Henry the VII, was plotting against Richard the III even though she was lady in waiting to his wife.  She would not have helped Richard and was very very religious.

Plus Elizabeth Woodville schemed with Margaret to have Henry VII marry Elizabeth's daughter, Elizabeth of York, to put an end to the claims of the other Yorks to the throne and to legitimize Henry VII's claim.  She would be unlikely to do that if she thought he had killed her two sons, one of whom would have been king.

Richard also had the marriage of Edward and Elizabeth of Woodville invalidated, making the boys illegitimate.  He was very worried about their claims to the throne

267 254 Margaret, mother of Henry the VII, was plotting against Richard the III even though she was lady in waiting to his wife. She would not have helped Richard and was very very religious. Plus Elizabeth Woodville schemed withMargaret to have Henry VII marry Elizabeth's daughter, Elizabeth of York, to put an end to the claims of the other Yorks to the throne and to legitimize Henry VII's claim. She would be unlikely to do that if she thought he had killed her two sons, one of whom would have been king. Richard also had the marriage of Edward and Elizabeth of Woodville invalidated, making the boys illegitimate. He was very worried about their claims to the throne Posted by: thunderb at October 05, 2013 09:34 PM (zOTsN) Keep watching the White Queen.

271 Lee said a number of senators had rose to speak against he and Cruz — “enough that I lost count.”

“I have to ask the question — why weren’t those who leaked this and leaked it in an unflattering and unfavorable way — why were they not willing to attach their names to those quotes?” he said. “You know, Ted Cruz and I spoke after the meeting and you know, we would both be fine with the American people seeing and hearing what we said in that meeting. But we’re pretty sure most of our colleagues would be very uncomfortable and downright embarrassed if their constituents saw the way they were behaving.”

Lee added there were “not really” any in the GOP caucus who had rose to his and Cruz’s defense.

“There were a lot of people who were participating directly in the attacks, adding fuel to the fire,” Lee added. “There were a lot of others who were staring at their shoes.”

Hey, BCCochran, my uncle (a minor league lefty pitcher in the late '40's) didn't talk baseball much with me - more with my brothers, probably because he had a lot of stories he didn't feel were suitable for a young lady's ears - he was old-fashioned about that. But I do remember him saying that nothing made him angrier than being "shown up" by a batter who had just hit a HR off of him. He meant the guy who stood at home plate to admire his HR rather than putting his head down and trotting around the bases.

I thought of that a few weeks ago, when Carlos Gomez of the Brewers did the same to a Reds pitcher as payback for being hit with a pitch by that same pitcher in an earlier series. Gomez thought that that had been intentional and had nursed a grudge (something baseball players sure seem to do). Gomez rounded the bases, barking at the infielders all the way and then was blocked from HR by the catcher and there was an old fashioned bench clearing brawl, with punches thrown, something you don't see these days. Gomez was suspended for a game and so was the Reds first baseman, but oddly, the catcher stayed in the game. And Gomez was credited with the HR despite the fact he never touched home plate.

BCochran: That's right - it was the Braves. I think the first baseman started the yelling and Gomez, who is not known for his cool temperament, yelled back and it escalated. Besides the one with the Padres guy who put Greinke out of commission for a while, it was the most serious benchclearer I've seen in a while. Baseball really seems to have lost many of it's rough edges, probably because all these guys make so much money.

A few years back I saw "Bull Durham" again and during the scene where Costner screams at the ump for a couple of minutes, I thought " No ump would wait that long to eject someone today." I remember being vastly entertained in the late '70's by watching Earl Weaver come running out the Orioles dugout like a little minature bull to scream in the ump's face. Umps must have just dreaded working Orioles games, but it was great theater.

Immediately after he died, Henry 8th had several of his father's financial ministers whacked. He couldn't execute his father and he needed to placate the people in some way. This made him very popular. Dad was really hated. Again, small transgressions carried the equivalency of a million dollar fine under Henry 7.

No, this isn't the book thread, but I'm reading Bill Bryson's book "At Home" and it says the majority of French homes didn't have indoor bathrooms well into the 1950's. My dad grew up on a farm without an indoor bathroom in the '20's ad 30's and baths were on Saturday night so everyone was clean for church in the morning. The tub was a big metal wash bucket in the kitchen, the water had to be heated on the stove, and they hung a drape over the entrance to the kitchen so you had a bit of privacy. The rest of the week? Well, it didn't make sense to do that every night when you were only going to get dirty again the next day. And since everyone smelled...

The difference between my dad and the French? When he moved to the city and had an indoor bathroom and was able to shower daily, he did. What's their excuse?
