From the "Gun Rights" article:

the amendment that would expand checks to sales online and at gun shows is “not registration”

Yes.  It.  Is.  Universal (or near universal) Background checks are Gun Registration.  What do these people think, that the Government is just going to look at those background check requests once and then shred/delete/discard them?  No, they'll keep them forever.  And now they have a law that says if you want to sell your gun, you (except for some rare circumstances) must have a criminal background check conducted- meaning they'll be able to trace the ownership history of the gun via background checks associated with that gun.

So tell me again how background checks are not registration.

A former justice of the peace was arrested on Monday and charged with making a terrorist threat in the case of the killings of two Texas prosecutors.

The story was still developing, but a Fox News reporter said Monday morning that “pieces of the puzzle are now starting to fit together. … We’re talking about possible murder charges to be filed.”

Eric Williams, 46, a former justice of the peace, was arrested, United Press International reported. HeÂ’s believed to have been involved in the deaths of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland, 63; his wife, Cynthia, 65; and an assistant district attorney, Mark Hasse, 57.

25 This response to the article on long term unemployment summed up the situation: "Long term unemployed and over 50. Let me spell it out for you confused, clueless employed: - You can drop your standards to rock bottom, minimum wage/part time right away - what you will get is: "aren't you overqualified for this? Won't you just leave the minute a better job comes around?" - You can drop your standards to rock bottom, minimum wage/part time - what you will find is that even for the most simplistic jobs, employers want experience. Retail? Need 3 years of recent experience. Picking orders in a warehouse? Six months of recent experience. Hostess seating diners in a middlin' family restaurant? Three years of similar experience. This is also why many teenagers and 20-somethings cannot find work: the job market has simply eliminated the concept of an entry level job. All they have to do is require 1 year of experience as a DISHWASHER...and anyone outside of those currently working as dishwashers are out of the running. In today's job market, I don't qualify FOR JOBS I DID AS A TEENAGER. - Go back to school and learn new skills? In what? Show me the employers just dying to hire 50+ year olds starting over. The always "hot" tech sector is well known for age discrimination, and anything that is even slightly physical is not a good bet. Over 50 and unemployed over six months? You are screwed." My spouse lost their mainframe programming job (downsized) when they were age 55 during Obama's first glorious reign. Haven't gotten a job in that field since despite sending out a plethora of resumes, going on "linkedin" etc. They are now working at a Supermarket at less than 1/4 of what they made before. This is the new norm. We are now living off of that poor salary, a pension and the little I make. I feel for anyone else in that situation and there are a lot of them. But Pravda media asserts things are looking up. Suuuuuuure

RE: the Texas DA murders:

You can call Chris Matthews anything you want — “dimwitted political hack” would be entirely appropriate — but please don’t insult an entire profession by calling Chris Matthews a “journalist.”

On March 30, Kaufman County, Texas, district attorney Mike McLelland and his wife were shot to death at their home. Five days later, Chris Matthews invited Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center onto MSNBC to promote speculation that McLellandÂ’s murder was committed by the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang.

In other words, the important thing about this crime — the thing that made it worth eight minutes of national network air time — was that it gave Chris Matthews a chance to stoke the paranoia of MSNBC viewers with the bogeyman specter of dangerously violent racists who (as all MSNBC viewers know) are the core constituency of the Republican Party

If you can't win your home state's primary you can't get the nomination. Period. End of story. - "Gold Tumbles To A Two Year Low" What goes up must come down. Spinnin' wheel, got to go 'round. That applies to gold, other commodities, stocks and bonds. Much to the chagrin and often to the rapt surprise of the CNBC demographic. - "NYT Now Publishing Letters From Gitmo Detainees" Leftism is a mental disorder, not an actual political ideology. QED. - "Maine Gov LePage Takes To The WSJ Editorial Page To Invite Gun Manufacturers To His State" Obviously. Rick Perry also is doing so. Other Republican governors will follow suit. Economics and jobs matter. So too do partisan elections. - "The Terrifying Reality Of Long Term Unemployment" The reality is more terrifying than people know. To be measured as part of the ranks of the long-term unemployed you have to have searched for gainful employment at least at some point within the past 12 months. If you gave up and stopped looking 13 or more months ago then you're not counted. There are millions of people who fall into that latter category. IOW, while the problem is grave even as reported the reality actually is downright catastrophic.

On the long-term unemployment front, Boy BFF is either coming up to or just past a year without a job. He's truly afraid that he's not going to ever get another job. Now, a major problem is that he can't just up and move somewhere with a better market and/or go work the gas fields in ND because a. The Wife has a very good job and can't just up and leave and b. they are unwilling to live apart if he were to get a job somewhere else. I am pretty much completely unsympathetic to this because my brother and sister in law have been living in two different states for quite some time because he has a good job in SC and she has a good job in NC and until she gets a job down there, she's stuck here. My brother spent nearly a year looking around here and they finally agreed that he should take the job in SC since that was the best lead he had. She's also now less than a year out from being 100% vested in the retirement plan at her current job so she's going to stick it out unless a job opens up down in SC for her. It sucks out loud but so does being a grown up. I know there are many people out there who cannot just up and move due to family commitments or not being able to sell a home or other reasons. Those people have my sympathy. Boy BFF whining about how he doesn't want to interview for a job that's not on the level of his last one? Not so much.

"CBS This Morning" did a 5 minute segment on Gosnell this morning and I was floored. They actually talked about the criticism (from anti-abortion people, not pro-life) of the media and interviewed the local affiliates reporter who has been covering the story. He gave some gory details and said what Kermit was charged with doing was shocking.

Of course they then trotted out a lawyer who said the case was about murder, not abortion. But they at least framed the story as "If you haven't heard this doctor's name, you may not be alone"

62 I have many Canadian in-laws who would agree with John Kerry, when he says that foreign students are afraid of American guns. Many of my in-laws think the 'States is like the wild west, but with worse health care. Especially the younger 20-somethings, who all completely believe that 9/11 was an inside job. My Canadian wife (a Liberal, no less) got in a shouting match with one of her cousins who insisted that no Jews reported for work on 9/11. None of these kids can understand how I've spent my entire life in the U.S., and have only even seen guns on a few occasions.

It probably makes sense, since they've reportedly been raised on in-class screenings of all Michael Moore's documentaries. As bad as American schools are, Canadian schools must be worse.

Aren't Michael Moore movies the only western movies allowed to be screened in Iran and Cuba? I wonder why...

She continued: "The Newtown families were VERY late for their meeting with me. I felt a moral obligation to talk with them. I kept the president of the United States waiting. I mean, how rude is that of me?"

Politico reports that she made "profuse apologies" to Mr Obama, explained what had happened and that she "just could not leave without talking to them."

"Canadian schools are worse. "

FIFY.

Spent more time in Canukistain over the past twenty years than I ever though I would, and have come to realize two key points about Canadian's views on the US;

1) Canukaland is far, far superior to the States in every imaginable way, shape, or form, and

2) despite the diet of bull ukempucky we've been fed, they couldn't find the USA on a map. Of North America.

Answer: What a Canadian thinks of the United States. Question: Describe something I don't give jacks***t about...

What I saw at the Gosnell trial

Thursday’s testimony had sensational details. The court staff, convinced it would attract journalists from around the nation, has set aside three rows of seats to accommodate up to 40 reporters. But all Thursday morning, as Ashly Baldwin testified to horror after horror, only one reporter was in the reserved seating — me.

Several local news outlets were there, scattered about the mostly empty courtroom. The Philadelphia Inquirer had a reporter there. NBC10 sent a blogger for its website. The AP stopped in, but the reporter told me that resources are thin and trial coverage is not gavel to gavel.

An hour into afternoon testimony, Jon Hurdle of The New York Times showed up, and a few minutes later was gone.

Meanwhile, in Alta California:

Fresh off their 2012 wins at the polls, California Democrats are looking to broaden their reach by advancing a new batch of bills aimed at expanding voter access and increasing turnout.

Approaches include encouraging county election officials to put polling places on college campuses and allowing Californians to pre-register to vote at age 15. One proposed constitutional amendment would let 17-year-olds vote in the primary, providing that they will turn 18 by the time the general election is held.

Another bill would allow officials to count absentee ballots as long as they are postmarked by Election Day, as opposed to the current rule requiring the ballots to arrive by that time. Other bills call for efforts to educate inmates on their post-jail voting rights and to speed up implementation of same-day registration in the state.

78 "The Terrifying Reality Of Long Term Unemployment"

Something in the American Spirit is dead, no?

During the Great Depression, men would load up everything they owned and drive out to Nevada just for a chance to get a job working on the Hoover Dam; sleeping under their Model T in the desert.

Other men, over our  history, when unemployed and unable to find work, would start their own business--selling something, anything.

Now, everyone just seems to wait, right? Somebody else has to risk their money, time and livelihood first so I can have a job.

Wasn't there a time when a man who was a salesman was a respected individual? Don't know how many times I've heard in my life, "I could never be a salesman." Hell, I even bought into it, that selling is too hard, too greedy, etc.

Truth is: Everyone is a salesman. You have to sell something if you want money. Most people have been conditioned to forget that while limiting themselves to selling the most common thing in the world: Time. Their time by the hour.

Well, everyone has time and you only have as much as the next guy. And as long as the only thing you can sell is your time, you will always be in a race to the bottom.

So, skills are a time multiplier. But, you have to learn how to market your skills. But factory schools and the factory model of employment only teach you to merely "post an ad" for your skills; put up a sign and hope customers will walk by and notice. That's not marketing.

But, the real multiplier is selling things. Because it's scalable to infinity while becoming nearly untethered from your time.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is: A good salesman is never hungry and is never out of work.

There are two labor markets nowadays. There's the market for people who have been out of work for less than six months, and the market for people who have been out of work longer. The former is working pretty normally, and the latter is horribly dysfunctional.

I posted this on Will's article - the immigration devil is in the details.

-----

Nonimmigrant Visa versus Immigrant Visa- Critical Distinction.

One is telling the truth to the US
government on the visa application. Guess which?

See also "Non Immigrant Visa Overstay"aka illegal status.

Why bother sneaking across the border when the US government gives out H-visas like candy? Lie on the form and just don't bother going back home. Ever.

Non immigrant visa holders (such as temporary workers H1b,H2A,H2b etc. )MUST sign an agreement with the US govt that they have“no intention to immigrate”to the US. IOW they must lie to crossthe border if they do not leave at the end of their stay.

Any guesses which politician is advocating prosecuting that fraud?

It's illegal visa fraud perpetrated by unscrupulous "labor brokers" and abuse of the US system that is the problem.

The illegals are not “relegated to the shadows” they are
THRIVING in the shadows: Tax free living . Who doesn't want that ?

If you have a fake or non existent SSN and are drawing US govt bennies, and are also working a cash under the table job, renting an upgraded house (that has lost half its value) and renting or leasing a car with no need to pay insurance and are getting free meals and "eengleesh" lessons and free lunches for the kids on the US taxpayers dime, why would you go back to your country?

Nobody can see you so nobody can catch you!

How can Americans or American companies compete with that type of labor force?

Police say at some point, the roommate called out for help and that's when the neighbor came rushing to the scene and placed Erin under arrest until police arrived.

Many of my in-laws think the 'States is like the wild west, but with worse health care

Most of the world's only exposure to America is through our pop culture.   So with that in mind, consider that most of the world's vision of America is the vision they get through the uber-leftist lens of Hollywood, wherein America is full of violent criminals,       idiots    with loose morals,      and/or    crushing     social and cultural    injustice.       Certain countries   (e.g., China)   reinforce this notion to dissuade their citizens from ever visiting the States    where they would      discover that,  by a huge majority,   we aren't like that at all.

I'll always remember an interview     with Orlando Bloom     I read     several years ago,   wherein    he talked about his experience filming a movie here in the    States.   They were filming on location    somewhere in the midwest -- I want to say Kansas or somewhere similar -- and he said he was shocked at how DIFFERENT it was from how he'd always    pictured America.   The America he knew    was the America of Los Angeles, NYC, Chicago,    Miami, and the other national hot spots that are always highlighted in films and on TV.   Those were also the only places he'd ever really visited.      He said that    he was    NOT expecting the warm welcome he got from the     people   in this little midwest    town,   who'd bake goodies to bring to the set for the cast and crew.      Everyone was so FRIENDLY    and   normal,  not bizarre and backward.      He was pleasantly surprised.

If all you ever knew of America came from movies, TV and trips to New York City, you'd    be hard-pressed to believe the people in "flyover country"    aren't      all inbred    Bible-thumpers    who'd     shoot you     the second they clapped eyes on you     if they suspected you weren't     the right kind of people.    And by extension    you'd   find it hard to believe that 85% of the population in our cities    ISN'T   composed of violent thrillkillers,   rapists and    gang   members    who willfully prey on the remaining 15% of fearful innocents.

129 107 Lady Thatcher was elected to the Royal Society in 1963 for her work as a chemist on emulsifyers used to make soft ice cream. Who knew ? Posted by: Simon Kuznets at April 15, 2013 10:24 AM (e8kgV) All that and ice cream? She needs a great big monument. --- I heard over the weekend that the Falklanders are trying to put up a statue of her on the island, though they stopped short of a push to name the port city after her. Granted, that was from the same news update where an Argentine senator was saying that his country's president was a stupid bitch, in veiled language, for expecting an invite to Thatcher's funeral given her stance on the Falklands and the 1982 war.

130 Apparently there is some truth the iranian time machine claim but it really only works in reverse, once you flip the switch it slowly drags you back all the way back to the stone age. one side effect that some view negatively is that it not only transports you but your entire country backwards and it is really slow. They flipped their time machine on back in 79 and so far it appears it has not really moved them backwards so much as freeze them in time.

The problem is for the agency temps (i.e., employed by Manpower, Kelly, etc) is that we don't provide benefits. We also require at least one good year temping in production positions. On the skilled blue collar side, we have a real disconnect--we have many vacancies and few qualified candidates. Also looking for engineers -- we will not hire engineers on H1B visas but do target transitioning military (such as myself). I'm starting to see the wisdom of Norse mythology. Mark Steyn on the media and Gosnell:

"Our NR colleague Ross Douthat wrote about the media and the Gosnell trial in The New York Times yesterday. The word “baby” does not appear. Instead:

ItÂ’s how you end up with a press corps that went all-in for the supposed “war on women” having to be shamed and harassed — by two writers in particular, Kirsten Powers in USA Today and Mollie Ziegler Hemingway of GetReligion — into paying attention to the grisly case of a Philadelphia doctor whose methods of late-term abortion included snipping the spines of neonates after they were delivered.

“Neonates”? I wonder if that was Mr Douthat’s word, or a compromise painfully negotiated with his alert editors at the Times. Ah, what a lovely neonate; she’s got your eyes."

It really is a life changing event for us because we had hit rock bottom and the stress was killing us. Looks like one of the best risks I've ever taken. And, bonus points, I get my family back under one roof. Pretty damn excited.

I would not make the gun control amnesty trade.

Nor would I. Both are assaults on  our country and our way of life. Picking the lesser of the two  evils is part of how we got into this mess.

Here's a radical idea: how about standing up for the right thing and saying no to both?

My thought is that there are going to be a lot of smart firms that are value investors or are looking for a good opportunity to do some distressed investing and pick up some really good employees at a really good salary. I guess the decision you have to make is would you prefer someone older with skills and experience that needs some ass kicking or someone young and unqualified who is graduating from the modern higher education.

There are penalties and interest if you're late and you owe money. If you're late and the IRS owes you, and you file April 20th, it doesn't matter.

This, X 10,000. The "long term = stigma" thing is stupid in the extreme - a thing that is "known" yet unproven and nonsensical once thought thru - aka "globullwarmening" or "whiteguyswithguns do the kill'n".

The reality is that dissaffected slackers will post up while on the job (an old survey on two big sites showed the vast and overwhelming majority of job searches were posted from corporate ISPs). Searching that group will yield you a crop of perpetually aggrived maligners who just so happen to be currently employed...

I've had excellent results in hiring even "longer term" unemployed.

AmericaÂ’s tax system is the most progressive in the developed world.

Yep, itÂ’s true: AmericaÂ’s tax system is harder on the rich and easier on the poor than, say, the French system, or the German system, or the Swedish system. All those countries rely heavily on value-added taxes, which are more regressive.

246 @AtC,

Possibly?  But they can't stop me from finding work elsewhere in the university (which I'm working on anyway it's just a slow tedious process, but I have a lead, it's just taking time to filter through the bureaucracy)

There's nothing worth whistle blowing anyway.  I took issue with something but research tells me it's "business as usual" for the FDA and Pharma (and by corollary IRBs), so I doubt I'd get much traction.  Plus there's no sign that it's actually against the regulations.  And they posted the problem as a question to the IRB forum anyway (so I'd be doing what exactly?  Pointing people to the post?)

My moral offense taken (and offense as a scientist at the crappy shit that passes as science these days) is irrelevant in face of THE REGULATIONS.
THE REGULATIONS are god, and to be followed at all costs.  No one should apply any thought that is deeper than THE REGULATIONS.

Maybe someday in the future I'll write a paper about it, how clinical trials are no longer science and shouldn't be treated as such. (Actually most human subjects research isn't really science anymore.)

It's a lot like the person who was complaining that if you itemize you get popped for the refund from last tax season as "income."

It's always been that way, and it has always been levied at "the evil rich" of course "the evil rich" keeps getting defined down.

A refund that is a refund without refundable credits takes your tax burden towards zero, the "refund" in that case is over withholding period.  It is not "found money" it is YOUR money and always was.

I hate 'refundable" and "unearned earned" credits with the passion of a thousand suns because idiots refuse to grasp they are reaching inside their neighbor's pocket...or hell maybe I am being too generous and folks know it.

I think once I move I am going to make a series of posts on Asymmetrical Tax Strategy and facts here....

'we know what you are, we're just haggling about price now'

Posted by: luigi vercotti at April 15, 2013 07:42 AM (Jsiw/)

261

We have deeper issues than government. Our government is a symptom.

Studying the political and legal landscape as I have for the past few years, I have to lay a great  deal of the blame on government and the lying liars who infest it.

Under our form  of government, we are  free to do something unless there is a law to prohibit a certain action. Our so-called "leaders" are enamored of the false premise that it's their job to make laws (see Feinstein, Dianne for one example).  In  their zeal to do what they think is their job,  they're actually reducing our  freedoms with each new law they pass. It's  no coincidence that our economy   is struggling after the 111th Congress, who passed more legislation than at any  time since LBJ's Great Society   years.

The  bigger and  more powerful government becomes, the more it restricts the free market. Government is like a leech   that keeps sucking the blood from its host.  Electing people who are supposed to represent our interests in Washington (but  refuse to do so) is a big part of the problem. They say a lot of things to get elected, then reach Washington and do the opposite. Until we start having a healthy skepticism of politicians, and understand  that in many cases we're dealing with our enemies, we'll continue our downward slide.

If the people are to blame, it's mostly because they believe these politicians who lie to them with the aid of their media comrades. The causes of our current malaise are manifold, the biggest being an uninformed public and mislead  schoolchildren. Unless and until we start   to demand accountability and truthfulness from those we send to Washington  (and those who report on them), we will only get worse  as a nation.

Unless and until we start to demand accountability and truthfulness from those we send to Washington (and those who report on them), we will only get worse as a nation.

Calling Milt Friedman:

“The solution is not finding the right people… It’s making it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing.”

Working on last eFile return for the  de Monet clan.  Have had two bounced  back by the IRS.  First one was my bad - fatfingered a SSN on a W-2 form.  It's been corrected and re eFiled and now the IRS has accepted it.

The second one was from  some Business Rule XML data fail that I *hope* I have corrected - the IRS says they can be tough to find.  [fingers crossed].

Until someone is like him and willing and able to explain  basic economics in a convincing way, we lose.

275 I was out of work for 13 months after the tech bust. I went from $50k a year to $9 an hour, just because I felt I'd do better to take a job, any job, than try to spin out the unemployment benefits for a few months. One of my new co-workers and I compared notes and had been paying more in taxes than we were making on our new paychecks. I call it "career deflation". I'm still not making as much as I was on unemployment, but I'm working at a place where my job is secure as long as they are in business and I can work from home. I get back all my Oregon taxes at tax time, so that works out to a bit more than what I make per hour. I'd probably look for something else if I'd landed here when I was younger.
