From the "Gun Rights" article:
the amendment that would expand checks to sales online and at gun shows is “not registration”
Yes. It. Is. Universal (or near universal) Background checks are Gun Registration. What do these people think, that the Government is just going to look at those background check requests once and then shred/delete/discard them? No, they'll keep them forever. And now they have a law that says if you want to sell your gun, you (except for some rare circumstances) must have a criminal background check conducted- meaning they'll be able to trace the ownership history of the gun via background checks associated with that gun.
So tell me again how background checks are not registration.

A former justice of the peace was arrested on Monday and charged with making a terrorist threat in the case of the killings of two Texas prosecutors.
The story was still developing, but a Fox News reporter said Monday morning that “pieces of the puzzle are now starting to fit together. … We’re talking about possible murder charges to be filed.”
Eric Williams, 46, a former justice of the peace, was arrested, United Press International reported. HeÂ’s believed to have been involved in the deaths of Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland, 63; his wife, Cynthia, 65; and an assistant district attorney, Mark Hasse, 57.

Morning, all!
Despite it being a welfare top-heavy state, Maine is looking more and more appealing every day. Governor LePage is the kind of governor that state has needed for a while. I don't know that he can do much to turn things around up there, but I hope so.

I've heard bits and pieces of that. The only evidence that I know of (at the moment) is some "threatening emails." Now, I haven't heard a whole lot about it, and I have read the big article about it (in the Ft. Worth Sartle-gram), but if that's all they've got, they've got nothin'.
Maybe some forensic accounting will find he took a hit, or maybe he's the actual killer and owns the weapon used in the murders, but I haven't heard any of that said, yet.

Mr. Gottlieb said that despite claims to the contrary, the amendment that would expand checks to sales online and at gun shows is “not registration” and went on to list a host of gun-rights protections in the measure, such as allowing interstate handgun sales for dealers and protections for veterans, for example.

RE: the Texas DA murders:
You can call Chris Matthews anything you want — “dimwitted political hack” would be entirely appropriate — but please don’t insult an entire profession by calling Chris Matthews a “journalist.”
On March 30, Kaufman County, Texas, district attorney Mike McLelland and his wife were shot to death at their home. Five days later, Chris Matthews invited Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center onto MSNBC to promote speculation that McLellandÂ’s murder was committed by the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang.
In other words, the important thing about this crime — the thing that made it worth eight minutes of national network air time — was that it gave Chris Matthews a chance to stoke the paranoia of MSNBC viewers with the bogeyman specter of dangerously violent racists who (as all MSNBC viewers know) are the core constituency of the Republican Party

Legal Pot Draws Tourists To Colorado For 4/20
Lest the citizens of CO think that this will bring commerce into the state, I'm reminded of my favorite episode of South Park, "Die, Hippie, Die". The mayor tells Cartman that the hippie jam band fest will bring much needed money into the community to which Cartman rants, "But hippies don't have any money!!!"
As an aside, I love me some hippie jam bands and Phish is about the only band I regularly go see live. And yes, hippies don't have money, and most of the commerce that occurs is in the hippie tarp villages outside the shows, certainly no tax revenues comming in.

TheQuietMan,
"CBS This Morning" did a 5 minute segment on Gosnell this morning and I was floored. They actually talked about the criticism (from anti-abortion people, not pro-life) of the media and interviewed the local affiliates reporter who has been covering the story. He gave some gory details and said what Kermit was charged with doing was shocking.
Of course they then trotted out a lawyer who said the case was about murder, not abortion. But they at least framed the story as "If you haven't heard this doctor's name, you may not be alone"

Last week, Sen. Susan Collins was apparently delayed for a meal with Mr Obama. She told Politico: "Everybody was seated when I got there, because I spent time talking to the parents and the family members of those who were killed at Newtown. I told them I had a dinner with the president but that I was deliberately being late," Collins added.
She continued: "The Newtown families were VERY late for their meeting with me. I felt a moral obligation to talk with them. I kept the president of the United States waiting. I mean, how rude is that of me?"
Politico reports that she made "profuse apologies" to Mr Obama, explained what had happened and that she "just could not leave without talking to them."

What I saw at the Gosnell trial
Thursday’s testimony had sensational details. The court staff, convinced it would attract journalists from around the nation, has set aside three rows of seats to accommodate up to 40 reporters. But all Thursday morning, as Ashly Baldwin testified to horror after horror, only one reporter was in the reserved seating — me.
Several local news outlets were there, scattered about the mostly empty courtroom. The Philadelphia Inquirer had a reporter there. NBC10 sent a blogger for its website. The AP stopped in, but the reporter told me that resources are thin and trial coverage is not gavel to gavel.
An hour into afternoon testimony, Jon Hurdle of The New York Times showed up, and a few minutes later was gone.

Meanwhile, in Alta California:
Fresh off their 2012 wins at the polls, California Democrats are looking to broaden their reach by advancing a new batch of bills aimed at expanding voter access and increasing turnout.
Approaches include encouraging county election officials to put polling places on college campuses and allowing Californians to pre-register to vote at age 15. One proposed constitutional amendment would let 17-year-olds vote in the primary, providing that they will turn 18 by the time the general election is held.
Another bill would allow officials to count absentee ballots as long as they are postmarked by Election Day, as opposed to the current rule requiring the ballots to arrive by that time. Other bills call for efforts to educate inmates on their post-jail voting rights and to speed up implementation of same-day registration in the state.

Something in the American Spirit is dead, no?
During the Great Depression, men would load up everything they owned and drive out to Nevada just for a chance to get a job working on the Hoover Dam; sleeping under their Model T in the desert.
Other men, over our history, when unemployed and unable to find work, would start their own business--selling something, anything.
Now, everyone just seems to wait, right? Somebody else has to risk their money, time and livelihood first so I can have a job.
Wasn't there a time when a man who was a salesman was a respected individual? Don't know how many times I've heard in my life, "I could never be a salesman." Hell, I even bought into it, that selling is too hard, too greedy, etc.
Truth is: Everyone is a salesman. You have to sell something if you want money. Most people have been conditioned to forget that while limiting themselves to selling the most common thing in the world: Time. Their time by the hour.
Well, everyone has time and you only have as much as the next guy. And as long as the only thing you can sell is your time, you will always be in a race to the bottom.
So, skills are a time multiplier. But, you have to learn how to market your skills. But factory schools and the factory model of employment only teach you to merely "post an ad" for your skills; put up a sign and hope customers will walk by and notice. That's not marketing.
But, the real multiplier is selling things. Because it's scalable to infinity while becoming nearly untethered from your time.
Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is: A good salesman is never hungry and is never out of work.

Why can't he get a job temping? Temping is a great way to find a good company and then work your way up. If you are anythinv like competent they will often hire you for good and then you will rise swiftly.
Around here, even temp work is thin on the ground and at least some companies aren't interested in hiring permanently what they can get through a constant stream of temps w/o having to pay benefits, etc.

I posted this on Will's article - the immigration devil is in the details.
-----
Nonimmigrant Visa versus Immigrant Visa- Critical Distinction.
One is telling the truth to the US
government on the visa application. Guess which?
See also "Non Immigrant Visa Overstay"aka illegal status.
Why bother sneaking across the border when the US government gives out H-visas like candy? Lie on the form and just don't bother going back home. Ever.
Non immigrant visa holders (such as temporary workers H1b,H2A,H2b etc. )MUST sign an agreement with the US govt that they have“no intention to immigrate”to the US. IOW they must lie to crossthe border if they do not leave at the end of their stay.
Any guesses which politician is advocating prosecuting that fraud?
It's illegal visa fraud perpetrated by unscrupulous "labor brokers" and abuse of the US system that is the problem.
The illegals are not “relegated to the shadows” they are
THRIVING in the shadows: Tax free living . Who doesn't want that ?
If you have a fake or non existent SSN and are drawing US govt bennies, and are also working a cash under the table job, renting an upgraded house (that has lost half its value) and renting or leasing a car with no need to pay insurance and are getting free meals and "eengleesh" lessons and free lunches for the kids on the US taxpayers dime, why would you go back to your country?
Nobody can see you so nobody can catch you!
How can Americans or American companies compete with that type of labor force?

Tami Erin, who played the title role in the 1988 movie "The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking" was arrested for assault on Thursday for allegedly roughing up her roommate.
According to Walnut Creek PD in northern California, Erin was placed under citizen's arrest by a neighbor who heard Erin and her male roommate arguing. Police say at some point, the roommate called out for help and that's when the neighbor came rushing to the scene and placed Erin under arrest until police arrived.

Many of my in-laws think the 'States is like the wild west, but with worse health care
Most of the world's only exposure to America is through our pop culture. So with that in mind, consider that most of the world's vision of America is the vision they get through the uber-leftist lens of Hollywood, wherein America is full of violent criminals, idiots with loose morals, and/or crushing social and cultural injustice. Certain countries (e.g., China) reinforce this notion to dissuade their citizens from ever visiting the States where they would discover that, by a huge majority, we aren't like that at all.
I'll always remember an interview with Orlando Bloom I read several years ago, wherein he talked about his experience filming a movie here in the States. They were filming on location somewhere in the midwest -- I want to say Kansas or somewhere similar -- and he said he was shocked at how DIFFERENT it was from how he'd always pictured America. The America he knew was the America of Los Angeles, NYC, Chicago, Miami, and the other national hot spots that are always highlighted in films and on TV. Those were also the only places he'd ever really visited. He said that he was NOT expecting the warm welcome he got from the people in this little midwest town, who'd bake goodies to bring to the set for the cast and crew. Everyone was so FRIENDLY and normal, not bizarre and backward. He was pleasantly surprised.
If all you ever knew of America came from movies, TV and trips to New York City, you'd be hard-pressed to believe the people in "flyover country" aren't all inbred Bible-thumpers who'd shoot you the second they clapped eyes on you if they suspected you weren't the right kind of people. And by extension you'd find it hard to believe that 85% of the population in our cities ISN'T composed of violent thrillkillers, rapists and gang members who willfully prey on the remaining 15% of fearful innocents.

Mark Steyn on the media and Gosnell:
"Our NR colleague Ross Douthat wrote about the media and the Gosnell trial in The New York Times yesterday. The word “baby” does not appear. Instead:
It’s how you end up with a press corps that went all-in for the supposed “war on women” having to be shamed and harassed — by two writers in particular, Kirsten Powers in USA Today and Mollie Ziegler Hemingway of GetReligion — into paying attention to the grisly case of a Philadelphia doctor whose methods of late-term abortion included snipping the spines of neonates after they were delivered.
“Neonates”? I wonder if that was Mr Douthat’s word, or a compromise painfully negotiated with his alert editors at the Times. Ah, what a lovely neonate; she’s got your eyes."

Everyone one of them looks the gun, fires it, then comes back next time with their own gun.

Ok, but the gun control bill, as far as I know, is small potatoes. And could easily be reversed or reformed at a later date. The immigration bill, on the other hand, might start giving us the same mess we see with Europe's immigration and demographic issues. The polls we are seeing about illegal immigrants having antipathy towards free-market/small-govt. freaks me out.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-04-15/gold-drops-most-30-years
I also read somewhere this morning that the antiChrist George Soros is dumping his Japanese interests and forsees hyperinflation and widespread market crashes.
That he'll no doubt find a way to profit from, since he's been instrumental in economic upheavals in the past.

Congrats!! Been there and have done that. Not fun, not easy, but worth it when you can make it all work out.
Thanks, everyone. I know I couldn't have done it without the Horde. Seriously. Once the (expense of the) move is complete, I'll be able to support the HQas it deserves.

The stupid is strong in you. If you are due a refund and file late, the IRS *may* assess a penalty against that refund for late filing. There is a late filing penalty that *may* apply whether or not you owe or have a refund coming.
Please go away and give your stupid misadvice to your fellow progs.

I'm tired of putting all the blame on the government. Sure, they deserve a share, but this country is Scammer Civilization.
If these people voted for Obama, who do you think they're hiring? What kind of bullshitters are getting promoted? What was this nations greatest technological innovation of the last 10 years?
We have deeper issues than government. Our government is a symptom.

Remember when Ezra Klein broke ranks with the Obama-fawning media and reported this during the 2012 presidential election?
AmericaÂ’s tax system is the most progressive in the developed world.
Yep, itÂ’s true: AmericaÂ’s tax system is harder on the rich and easier on the poor than, say, the French system, or the German system, or the Swedish system. All those countries rely heavily on value-added taxes, which are more regressive.
Me neither. He just reported it today. To get people to pay their taxes and shut up already. Sorry, Mitt.

I guess this isn't the first time the Bible has been used to justify injustice, oppression, and slavery, but it's kind of weird to see that usage embraced by the oppressed.

Possibly? But they can't stop me from finding work elsewhere in the university (which I'm working on anyway it's just a slow tedious process, but I have a lead, it's just taking time to filter through the bureaucracy)
There's nothing worth whistle blowing anyway. I took issue with something but research tells me it's "business as usual" for the FDA and Pharma (and by corollary IRBs), so I doubt I'd get much traction. Plus there's no sign that it's actually against the regulations. And they posted the problem as a question to the IRB forum anyway (so I'd be doing what exactly? Pointing people to the post?)
My moral offense taken (and offense as a scientist at the crappy shit that passes as science these days) is irrelevant in face of THE REGULATIONS.
THE REGULATIONS are god, and to be followed at all costs. No one should apply any thought that is deeper than THE REGULATIONS.
Maybe someday in the future I'll write a paper about it, how clinical trials are no longer science and shouldn't be treated as such. (Actually most human subjects research isn't really science anymore.)

Well add in that, add in late filing is an auto flag the next tax year....
- h/t sven
If you can't make the 4/15 filing deadline and you're positive you have a refund coming, just file an extension. Show a tax due of $0 on the extension form. Saves the late filing penalty and the red flag for next year.

It's a lot like the person who was complaining that if you itemize you get popped for the refund from last tax season as "income."
It's always been that way, and it has always been levied at "the evil rich" of course "the evil rich" keeps getting defined down.
A refund that is a refund without refundable credits takes your tax burden towards zero, the "refund" in that case is over withholding period. It is not "found money" it is YOUR money and always was.
I hate 'refundable" and "unearned earned" credits with the passion of a thousand suns because idiots refuse to grasp they are reaching inside their neighbor's pocket...or hell maybe I am being too generous and folks know it.
I think once I move I am going to make a series of posts on Asymmetrical Tax Strategy and facts here....

We have deeper issues than government. Our government is a symptom.
Studying the political and legal landscape as I have for the past few years, I have to lay a great deal of the blame on government and the lying liars who infest it.
Under our form of government, we are free to do something unless there is a law to prohibit a certain action. Our so-called "leaders" are enamored of the false premise that it's their job to make laws (see Feinstein, Dianne for one example). In their zeal to do what they think is their job, they're actually reducing our freedoms with each new law they pass. It's no coincidence that our economy is struggling after the 111th Congress, who passed more legislation than at any time since LBJ's Great Society years.
The bigger and more powerful government becomes, the more it restricts the free market. Government is like a leech that keeps sucking the blood from its host. Electing people who are supposed to represent our interests in Washington (but refuse to do so) is a big part of the problem. They say a lot of things to get elected, then reach Washington and do the opposite. Until we start having a healthy skepticism of politicians, and understand that in many cases we're dealing with our enemies, we'll continue our downward slide.
If the people are to blame, it's mostly because they believe these politicians who lie to them with the aid of their media comrades. The causes of our current malaise are manifold, the biggest being an uninformed public and mislead schoolchildren. Unless and until we start to demand accountability and truthfulness from those we send to Washington (and those who report on them), we will only get worse as a nation.

It is an auto flag, and depending on what level of taxtaion you're talking about and where yes there very much is comrade.
try that with Ohio School District Tax.
In the case of the Federales level it is true you generally do not have a penalty.....it is also very true that if you file more than 36 months after the filing was due you surrender claim to the refund....
You want to go ther ounds with me Mau Mau?
You still set up an auto flag.

You gave incorrect general advice on the matter.
Yes federal level you technically are not penalized a late filing on a refund due return.
1) "generally"
2) "federal"
You forgot to advise on the potential remission over overwithholding, you also left out several levels of taxes at various levels do have non filing penalties.
It is always a pleasure watching you apologize for leviathan....

Working on last eFile return for the de Monet clan. Have had two bounced back by the IRS. First one was my bad - fatfingered a SSN on a W-2 form. It's been corrected and re eFiled and now the IRS has accepted it.
The second one was from some Business Rule XML data fail that I *hope* I have corrected - the IRS says they can be tough to find. [fingers crossed].
