— Open Blogger Everyone uses a text editor of some sort, right? They've been around forever but seem to have gotten rather ummm...the German word would be Zaftig, perhaps even more than just Zaftig...
Its coming on 25 years now since I discovered this little gem of a plain text editor Sam Wilmott wrote. I even sent him some cash way back when because I was so impressed with its power/size ratio and its RAW FREAKING SPEED. I used it for many years while working at IBM. This tiny little editor (well under 20K), packed more functionality per byte than almost any piece of software I've ever seen. When other editors (like BRIEF) had text dribbling across a screen on an old 4.77mhz 8088 when you leaned on the PgDn key, SLED would make it fly by in a blur.
I continue to use it to this day occasionally (along with BRIEF) for plain text editing.
If you'd like to experience what a real software craftsman can do with a bit of code no larger than most avatar graphics images, download SLED and give it a try. Bits don't rot -- its every bit as good today as it was back in 1987, and that was very good indeed.
You can download SLED here. Its a plain DOS app, but will run fine under any version of Windows or anything that has a DOS emulation.

Anyone remember "ned" on a Unix system?
As nice as "brief" and only ten years earlier.

I tried.
Note: SLED does not work under DR-DOS 2.1
But that may be due to my overclocking the 8086.

I'll toss out a couple of tech-blegs.
1. I'm looking for the equivalent of "FileTree" from back-in-the-day. I've looked at the recent versions and they don't do what I need them to do, namely "Search for Files based on text in fiels, Allow Tagging of Said Files, and then Copy Said Files"
2. I'm going to use Outlook until I die as my previous attempts at ThunderBird and GMail resulted in various infarctions. Any recommendations for Outlook extensions (besides Thunderbird and/or Google)?
3. 3D sketch/visualize software for, basically, outdoor artwork / scultpure? I don't need to generate CNC commands, but would like to be able to 'show' ideas to people who don't imagine too good.
Thanks,
and, no, I will not be talked out of Outlook. If I had my way we'd all be using WordPerfect 5.1 and hitting Shift-F7 to print, the way God intended us to.

Steve Jobs screwed the pooch big time. He decided that the world should pay big time for the privilege of using Firewire. He wanted a ridiculous amount per port to be paid to Apple for their IP. This amount went down a few times but by then the hardware industry had gotten tired of explaining that most people didn't have a use for this. The primary application of connecting to digital video cameras still had years to go before becoming a mainstream application.
If you've notice how a lot of 1394 ports are the four pin variety with no power (a plug previously most familiar to users of the Nintendo Gameboy) it's because Sony got fed up waiting for Apple to finalize the spec and went ahead with a version of their own based on the portions that were final and really mattered in terms of the signaling and such. (I have an old Sony laptop that had a four pin port and a separate power port along with an adapter to connect both to a six pin cable.)
The original intent for USB was pretty modest. It was largely inspired by Apple's ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) that had a lot of applications planned for it but was rarely used for anything other than connecting keyboards and mice. Compaq, DEC (later absorbed into Compaq), IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC, and Nortel all saw a need for a more versatile port for a wide range of application combined with the OS support that allowed for users to just plug in to any open socket and have it work. This was a pretty big deal in the early 90s, between growing complexity and the looming problem of IRQ availability.
It was expected that USB and Firewire would co-exist with Firewire handling the heavy data loads and USB being the low-speed catch-all. But Jobs almost single handedly guaranteed FireWire would not be included on a majority of new PCs. The digital video market wasn't enough to justify it for most OEMs and once USB 2.0 became a reality camera makers soon decided to go with the numbers.
A few years later, when Apple was becoming seriously profitable, Jobs might have realized it was a bad idea to try to monetize Firewire. But such is history.

Microsoft was far too trusting of developers back in the early days of Windows. There were always guidelines available to show devs how to do things nice and neat, especially after Win95 established a directory just for software installations.
They didn't really wise up until Vista when a lot of stuff that formerly been mere recommendation became enforced laws. Though not nearly as much as I'd like. The problem is how much old stuff that was badly designed but business critical would be broken. For instance, they finally started having separate directories for program code and program data that was subject to change, like configuration files. This is a basic safety design, minimizing the write activity to areas that should very rarely be changed. A properly designed app should be able to work if its directory in Program Data is wiped out. It just reverts to default state until new data is established.
This is something most OSes coming from the mainframe and mini end of the industry have done for decades. Microsoft came out of the flying by the seat of your pants micro end of the business. It made things a lot more accessible for beginning users and coders but the platform badly needed some adult supervision after so many years.

The Gameboy connector is keyed differently. Different corners of the connector lopped off.
The original intent for USB was pretty modest. It was largely inspired by Apple's ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) that had a lot of applications planned for it but was rarely used for anything other than connecting keyboards and mice.
ADB was, as I recall, pretty much i2c with a higher-level protocol imposed. DEC swiped it pretty much outright for some of its MIPS-based workstations, but still only used it for keyboards and mice.
The USB protocol is more like bisync with different CRC polynomials. Annoyingly, USB uses different polynomials for different parts of the transaction. Had they stuck with bisync, they could have leveraged off-the-shelf IP for anything from 8051s on up.
