Ten Years of Nonsense: The X and Y But Mostly Y Joke
— Ace

This was a frequent joke from 2007 to 2010. It still comes up occasionally.

Mostly it was used with terrorists' deaths. I think this was the first one, or at least it's what a search turns up as the first "But Mostly" headline, from August 2nd, 2007:

Sad: Glasgow Bomber/Self-Immolator Dies Of Heart-Ache and Burns, But Mostly Burns

A few of the headline gags below, starting with the early ones, and then skipping around for the better ones. I stopped the joke because, well. I ran out of new things to say after ten repetitions.

But that didn't stop me. That never stops me.

Remember, a MacGuffin is the thing the hero wants but that the audience doesn't really care about...

Yeah I think his burka had a wardrobe malfunction. US troops were questioning women they found in a terrorist house and realized, as they were talking to this "woman," that he was a dude.

He tried to escape dressed in the traditional Courageous Muslim Warrior garb, a woman's burka.
The Carmen Miranda fruit-hat was a bad choice of accessory. Sure, it showed off his hazel eyes, but at what cost?

Then something wonderful happened: he was killed.

And May 2, 2010:

Osama Bin Ladin Loses Popularity and 30cc of Brain and Skull But Mostly 30cc of Brain and Skull

As you can see, the joke sort of gets repetitive.

114 The story snob in me wants to dismiss Macguffins as lazy storytelling, but I adore Hitchcock and many of his films involve a macguffin in some way. It CAN be a symptom of lazy writing, in the wrong hands, but is not fated to be.

All the Utah newscasts are behaving like whiny babies about our current lack of snow. Which, have they never lived in this state before? Did we not have our freaking airport shut down right before Christmas from snow and ice, which considering how much we get is a pretty rare event? Did we not have a white Christmas? Chill the crap out, it will be fine. Plenty of months yet to build up our snowpack. Of course I don't ski, thus the condition of the current snow bothers me not one whit.

I saw one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes yesterday. An old hillbilly and his coon hound go coon hunting and manage to drown themselves. The hillbilly is invited into Heaven but won't go because they don't accept dogs. Then a hillbilly angel comes down and tells him that was actually hell and they were trying to trick him into entering. They don't allow dogs because dogs are too smart to fall for that shit. And in real Heaven they do take dogs.

A friend of mine told me that there is a flu virus out there & it's resistant to flu shot. I had flu shot December 3 & got sick on December 13. I improved enough to go to work all last week & got even worse Saturday.
