Tension In The Greater East Asian Chinese Co-Properity Sphere
— Open Blogger

In case you haven't heard, China recently expanded its air defense zone to include the disputed Senkaku Islands. China senses weakness in the West(rightfully so) and is testing the limits of American power.

Since the announcement the US has flown B-52's through the newly declared Chinese air defense zone, the South Koreans have extended their own air defense zone to include the disputed Islands, and the Japanese instructed their private airlines to continue to fly through the Chinese air defense zone.

This is a recipe for disaster, just last week a Chinese naval vessel tried to force a US warship to stop in international waters.

The guided missile cruiser USS Cowpens, which recently took part in disaster relief operations in the Philippines, was confronted by Chinese warships in the South China Sea near BeijingÂ’s new aircraft carrier Liaoning, according to officials familiar with the incident.

“On December 5th, while lawfully operating in international waters in the South China Sea, USS Cowpens and a PLA Navy vessel had an encounter that required maneuvering to avoid a collision,” a Navy official said.

“This incident underscores the need to ensure the highest standards of professional seamanship, including communications between vessels, to mitigate the risk of an unintended incident or mishap.”

Keep an eye towards Asia in the early 21st century. The current circumstances there resemble that of late 18th and early 19th century Europe. Land and sea grabs, rising and declining great powers, irredentist feelings, historical rivalries, increased military spending, a thirst for power, domestic need for resources, and poor communication. When reached for comment on the situation in Asia, Fred Thompson said:

Thank you, MSM, for burying this. We don't want president OJT to look bad now, do we? Hey, we sent JOE BIDEN, and now JOHN KERRY over there, so I'm sure everything is fine. Barack Obama doesn't know why ships have a pointy end. He's a Chicago Pol - crafty, and slimy, and perhaps even clever when it comes to manipulation... but when things require actual intelligence? At that time Europe was engaged in the wars of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire.  It wasn't just tension and sabre-rattling.  Those sabres were being bloodied.

234 Actually there is a good way for a PLAN skipper to lose it.

USS Cowpens insists on its right to navigate.  Which means it closes with the PRC's only carrier, a crown jewel and strategic asset needed for local hegemony.  Sure he is on the radio to Beijing, but PLAN has to go talk with the Politburo, who have to debate things.

Meanwhile that poor PLAN skipper is stuck with orders to defend the carrier.  And Cowpens continues to close.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at December 13, 2013 07:00 AM (5EPry)

235 Yes, Nimitz was CINCPAC in WWII, but he moved his HQ to Guam in late 1944 and 1945. Not embarqued in a flagship. An approachable fleet commander would probably be Halsey, not Spruance or Turner. The Hainan incident involved a P-3, specifically an EP-3 E. During the Cold War Soviet ships sailed as tattletales to NATO task groups. They would try and cross the bow of carriers in flight ops (restricted in their ability to maneuver). The Royal Navy carrier Ark Royal did not flinch and collided with a Soviet destroyer. The Soviets left the Royal Navy alone after that. In the USN, every tattletale was targeted for gunfie by an escorting warship. The target solution was always current. Just our 5" guns were not pointed at thes Soviet ships, which was a matter of seconds to train the guns to fire. After a number of incidents, a treaty spelled out conduct of Soviet and American ships in proximity. The treaty mosty worked, except for the odd diliberate violation, like the collisions with the USS Caron and USS Yorktown in the Black Sea.
